BORIS PLAYS TOUGH
PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson’s decision
to suspend Parliament for five
weeks ahead of a Queen’s Speech in
October has created uproar from politicians
opposed to the UK leaving the EU
without a deal on October 31st.
Wednesday’s move has sparked criticism
from those who argue that Boris Johnson is
by Alex Trelinski
simply trying to prevent MPs from blocking
a no-deal Brexit.
Outrage over the government’s decision to
suspend Parliament is “phoney”, according
to the Leader of the House of Commons, Jacob
Rees-Mogg. He also denied it was part of
a bid to “railroad” through a no-deal Brexit.
But government whip Lord Young has
resigned in protest, arguing the move
risks “undermining the fundamental role
of Parliament”.
And a Scottish court hearing is now under
way which could block the suspension of
Parliament. The government said the fiveweek
suspension in September and October
will still allow time to debate Brexit.
On Wednesday, Labour leader Jeremy
Corbyn described Mr Johnson’s move as
“a smash-and-grab on our democracy” in
order to force through no-deal by leaving
MPs without enough time to pass laws
in Parliament.
As for British expats living in Spain, they
still have the safety net of a pledge made by
the Spanish government in March that their
rights would remain unchanged, but the
package details are dependent on the UK
government offering the same kind of deal
to Spaniards in Britain.
That aspect of Brexit, along with many
others, continues to remain unclarified as
the long-drawn out saga is set to continue
with more drama in the autumn, with the
UK government holding out for a better
withdrawal deal with the EU, which would
eliminate the Irish backstop.
Dream come true
for tragic child
LITTLE Hugo Sanchez
has spent his 11
months on the planet
battling a crippling
neuro-degenerative
condition that will
one day claim his
life.
However this week,
thanks to a team of
medical staff and the
NGO Ambulance of
Desire Foundation, he
was able to fulfil what
his parent’s described
as “his final wish” by
spending a day on the
beach and in the sea.
by Simon Russell
Hugo has been hospitalised
since birth but
last Wednesday the
team took the little boy
in a specially adapted
ambulance to Playa La
Azohia (Murcia) where
he was able to spend
the day in and around
the waters with his
parents, Encarna and
Jose, thanks to the
medics who set up the
large amount of equipment
he needs to sustain
him.
The day came about
after a nurse at the
Virgen de la Arrixaca
Hospital had overheard
Encarna telling
Hugo how great it
would be if he could see
the sea for one day before
he left them.
She contacted the
foundation which led
to the family day out
last week. “The experience
has been very
special. Hugo saw his
first sunset and even
shooting stars” said
his mother.
British tourist
infected by
deadly virus
by Simon Russell
A British holidaymaker in
Andalusia has been confirmed
as the first foreigner
to be affected by the listeria
outbreak that is sweeping
across Spain.
A meatloaf appears to be
the culprit and they went to a
local health centre then later
returned to the UK where the
diagnosis was confirmed.
The outbreak has been
traced to a meat packing plant
which distributes across the
country. Two elderly people
have died from contracting
the infection, although one
of them was a cancer sufferer
and it has not yet been fully
confirmed if the bug was the
actual cause of death.
About 200 people are
thought to have contracted
listeria in the last couple of
weeks, although the figure
may be higher due to misdiagnosis
or people with mild
cases not seeing a medical
professional.
The offending products, the
“carne mechada” range of processed
meats sold under the
La Mecha brand, have now
been withdrawn. Andalusia
has been the hub for sales of
these products but they have
been sold all over Spain.

NEW MAN
IN MADRID
HUGH ELLIOTT has taken
up his post as the UK ambassador
to Spain, succeeding
Simon Manley
who held the position
since 2014.
Ellott had previously been
Director of Communications
in the Department for Exiting
the European Union.
On his arrival, Hugh Elliott
said:
“With a wealth of cultural,
commercial, and people-topeople
links, the relationship
between the UK and Spain is
like no other, and I am proud
and honoured to represent
my Queen and country here
in Spain.”
For the Ambassador, this
strong connection with Spain
has been an important part of
his life for decades. “I met my
wife Toñi while working as an
by Alex Trelinski
English teacher at the University
of Salamanca, Spain was
my first diplomatic posting in
the nineties and my two children
were born in Madrid. I
can understand why so many
UK nationals have chosen
to make Spain their home,”
he said.
He added that “We are approaching
an important milestone
as the UK prepares to
leave the European Union on
31 October”.
His message was one of
reassurance to UK nationals
currently living in Spain that
“We’ve given EU citizens living
in the UK the legal certainty
of their right to live and remain
in the United Kingdom.
And I’m very pleased that the
Spanish Government has put
in place, through t h e
Royal Decree, the same
guarantees for British
citizens in Spain.”
BEACH BOMB FIND
ONE of Barcelona’s most
popular beaches at Sant
Sebastia had to be cleared
on Sunday, after a bomb
was found underwater.
The Guardia Civil established
a security perimeter of
250 meters around the device,
with the area remaining cordoned
off until Monday, when
by Alex Trelinski
navy specialists deactivated
the bomb.
The device, located at a
depth of three metres, some
25 metres from the shore,
was found by an off-duty police
diver who happened to be
swimming in the area.
CHILEAN CON CALLS
by Alex Trelinski
SPAIN’S National Police has
warned about a new road
of phone hoaxes, involving
hostage calls with a Chile
country prefix.
Authorities have warned
phone users not to answer calls
with a country prefix of 0056 –
for Chile – unless they know
someone who lives there, then
they should check the number
corresponds with that of their
relative or friend, or contact
them via other means to see if
they have rung.
Calls are normally made
between 4.00pm and 11.00pm,
and claim that a family member
has been kidnapped and
demanding a ransom.
“However realistic it
sounds, don’t fall for it, don’t
pay, and do report it,” National
Police say on Twitter.
“Don’t fall for this blackmail
– it’s what is known as a ‘virtual
kidnap’. Stay calm and
call us on 091.”
What you should expect from
a good financial advisor?
Reduced pension options for non-
UK residents.
I have been advising in Spain now
for over 7 years, and during this time
have seen many changes to pension
rules. The biggest change by far
was the introduction of Pension
freedoms in 2015, where people
now have the option to access their
pension from 55 and essentially
have the flexibility to take what they
want, when they want it.
Pension Freedoms extended to expats
living here in Spain and I have
sat down with hundreds of clients
over the years and discussed their
individual pension plans and advised
them on their options.
About a month ago, I sat down with
a client who had a personal pension
with Aegon. She has lived in Spain
for many years and she contacted
me as she was reaching retirement
age and wanted to understand what
her options were and how she went
about accessing her pension. At
the meeting she completed a letter
of authority which allowed me to
contact her pension company on her
behalf and discuss her specific plan.
When I received the information
back from them I was shocked to
understand that because she is a
‘non-UK resident’ her options were
limited to either take the pension in
full (her pension was over £100k
so the tax implications would be
catastrophic), to purchase an annuity
(something which we wouldn’t
advise with annuity rates so low), or
to transfer to a different scheme. She
had no option to leave her pension
where it was and access it flexibly.
I was convinced that they’d made a
mistake so called them for clarification,
and during the phone call, they
confirmed that the member had
limited options as she was a non-UK
resident.
This member had planned her whole
retirement based on her having
flexible access to her pension, so it
potentially changed her entire future
plans. For this client, I was able to
find a solution by moving her pension
to a UK based pension called
a SIPP, where she could not only
benefit from having a local adviser
here in Spain, but also it meant she
could take advantage of full flexible
access. This is not an isolated
incident, and we’re seeing more and
more schemes effectively refusing
to give ongoing service to non-UK
residents, meaning our only option
is often to transfer them to a scheme
that will allow non-UK residents.
My advice to anyone with a pension
that they are yet to access is to understand
what options are available
Did the earth
move for you?
by Simon Russell
AN earthquake struck the
Marina Alta at around 10 in
the evening last Wednesday
night (21 August).
The quake was felt by
many people in Javea, Teulada,
Denia, Benitatxell and
Pedreguer, prompting a number
of calls to the authorities.
While there were fears that
the rumbling could have been
anything from a gas explosion
to a car crash, there have been
no reports of any damage to
property or injuries to people.
The Geographic Institute
later confirmed that the earthquake
measured 2.8 on the
Richter Scale and had its epicentre
in Poble Nou de Benitatxell.
Tremors are relatively
common on the southern Costa
Blanca and Murcia - where
a number of people died in one
such incident in Lorca a few
years ago - but are rarer this
far north on the coast.
Red Cross to
the rescue
by Simon Russell
A Red Cross patrol boat
and helicopter saved the
lives of two people who
had fallen into the sea at
a remote part of the Denia
coastline last week.
The pair were part of a
group of youngsters who
were walking at Cova Talla
when they were dragged into
the water by a freak wave.
They managed to cling to
some rocks but were unable
to get to shore and others in
the group contacted the authorities.
Despite the rough sea
conditions - the red flag had
been flying on many Denia
beaches - an inflatable patrol
boat and two lifeguards
quickly reached the scene. A
second vessel soon arrived
as well as the helicopter.
Two of the lifeguards
jumped in the water and
managed to get the victims
to the relative safety of a
nearby cave. A third guard
then took the land route and
guided them to safe ground.
One man was treated
for abrasions at the local
health centre but his condition
is not serious. The
rescuers were praised for
their bravery in the dangerous
conditions.
QUICK DIP THEFTS
by Alex Trelinski
THE NUMBER of swimmers on Barcelona
area beaches having their belongings
stolen whilst they are in the water has
got so serious, that the local police have
handed out almost 200 emergency kits to
victims this year.
Included in the set is a T-shirt with the
city’s logo on, a pair of shorts, flip flops and a
metro ticket. So far this summer, 174 bathers
have been helped by the police, with officer
patrols being stepped up to try and curb
the problem across the Catalan capital’s ten
main beaches.
The most popular beach is at La Barceloneta,
with 900 thefts reported there over the
season.
Second infant death lands parents in jail
A couple from Caudete (Albacete) are
reported to have been jailed after their
infant son suffered a traumatic death, 18
months after another baby of theirs died
in mysterious circumstances.
The first child, aged just four months, was
admitted to Albacete hospital in January
2018 with head injuries and later died from
cerebral bleeding. Although the Guardia
Civil said that their explanation was inadequate
- they stated they had found the boy
in that condition - they were not detained, although
a homicide investigation was opened.
The mother soon became pregnant again
and gave birth to another boy this February.
by Simon Russell
At the same age, four months, emergency
services were contacted and the baby was
found dead in the defendants home.
He had suffered severe rib injuries and
the autopsy showed signs of previous similar
injuries. In this instance the couple were arrested
and have remained in jail since July,
although both protest their innocence, blaming
possible medical malpractice. A trial is
likely to follow unless evidence is found
clearing the couple, while questions may also
be asked of social services and the police after
the second death.
The Columbian national,
aged 53, was detained while
he was snapping an illicit
by Alex Trelinski
in a backpack. The police
have since tied him to more
than 500 incidents and believe
he uploaded 283 clips
of the footage to porn sites.
“The detained man generally
recorded his female victims
in busy areas such as
the Metro before following
them to the street,” the police
said in a statement.
He “sometimes even introducing
The car, which is worth
over 30 thousand euros, was
written-off after the accident..
It’s understood the father
left the teenager alone in
the car, with the boy saying
that he climbed into the driver’s
seat.
He accidentally knocked
the motor of the automatic
vehicle into gear and burst
through the gates, as he left
a trail of destruction, as fortunately
nobody was injured.
SUICIDE RIDDLE
A National Police officer is said to
have killed himself by using his own
gun, whilst he was working in the jail
cells at Elche’s courthouse.
The 42-year-old man died on Tuesday
at around 10.15am, and had already
brought some of those in custody that
morning for a court appearance. The man
had no apparent history of depression.
NOT WHAT IT SEEMS
A SAN JAVIER woman who ran a scam by
advertising homes as bogus holiday lets,
has been arrested by the National Police.
The 44-year-old had been previously detained
six times over deception over the last
three years in the Murcia region, Alicante
Province, and north in Tarragona, but was
still free to carrying on conning.
In her latest wave of deception, she copied
photos of residential properties in the Campoamor
and Pilar de la Horadada areas from
various websites, and offered them for rent
from an office in Molina del Segura.
The National Police got a complaint this
month from a man who did business with
by Alex Trelinski
the fraudster back in March, when he was
“rented out” a beach house in Campoamor.
He transferred 1,800 euros to her account,
and when he and is family arrived
at Campoamor at the start of August for
their holiday, he was greeted by the house
owner, who had no idea of why his property
was being rented, and had no knowledge of
the scammer.
Further complaints were received from
other “victims” who had paid for non-existent
lets in the area, and investigations
are continuing.
Benidorm’s
Pea Men
war
COUNCILLORS in Benidorm,
have, earlier this
week, unanimously voted
through a motion, urging
the Congress of Deputies to
bring into force a law making
street gambling scams,
known as ‘Triles’ a criminal
act.
The gambling game, is operated
by gangs of men and
women, who set up makeshift
tables made from cardboard,
on which they place three
plastic cups, with a pea under
one of them, before encouraging
passers-by to place a
bet to guess the whereabouts
of the pea and win double
their money.
Unwitting pedestrians are
drawn in by watching other
participants appear to guess
correctly and win money, however
these winners are also
part of the gang, used to lure
in potential victims.
Generations of British tourists
have witnessed this game
operated by the so called ‘pea
men’, ever since it arrived on
the streets of Benidorm in the
1970’s.
Hundreds of them have fallen
victim to the scam, which
draws large crowds and allows
other members of the gang to
pickpocket the spectators who
gather to watch.
A recent incident, involving
a young British holidaymaker
violently attacked by
members of a ‘Trilero’ gang,
after he tried to warn other
spectators that the game was
a scam, prompted Benidorm
Mayor, Toni Perez to push for
legislation to make the game a
criminal act.
During the assault, which
occurred last week and was
recorded and uploaded onto
Youtube by a friend, the victim
Nathan Smith, 23, was
attacked by a group of six or
seven members of a ‘Pea Men’
gang, brandishing metal poles
and bats, with which he was
beaten to the ground and left
with a bleeding wound to the
back of his head.
Speaking to The Sun newspaper,
the victim said, “I got
hit quite badly on the back of
my head.”
“I was scared for my life, I
didn’t know if I was going to
come out alive. I got battered
and covered in blood. My
friend came out of it black and
blue, he had a black ear and
two black eyes.”
The young Brit revealed
he had been in the resort
two months previously and
witnessed an old woman
fall victim to the scam and
was determined not to see
a reoccurrence.
Current legislation, leaves
Police powerless to arrest
the gangs, as although street
gambling is considered a
crime, the ‘Pea Men’ claim
they are playing a game of
chance, and therefore the person
placing the bet is actually
breaking the law.
Benidorm councillor for
security, Lorenzo Martinez,
speaking to the Spanish press
said, “We know that the National
Police Corps is already
carrying out identification of
the people who have participated
in this very unfortunate
event. From the City of Benidorm
we want to strongly condemn
this brutal aggression
produced on public roads,”
He explained that the gangs
are routinely moved on and on
many occasions arrests have
been made, but the courts
are “tied hand and foot since
the ‘trileros’ declare themselves
insolvent and return to
the street.”
Speaking after last Mondays
council meeting, Mayor
Perez said, the activity, “damages
the image of the city
of Benidorm and Tourism
in general.”
The young Brit received a blow to the back of his head

FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 15
Alfas,Albir,Altea Local&Lifestyle
Altea launches Land bank project
by Andy Mansell
ALTEA town hall has
launched an ambitious project
to inject new life into
abandoned rural plots, that
currently account for twenty
percent of the municipalities
total land.
Almost three and a half million
square metres of land in
Altea is classed as abandoned,
much of which is orange
groves, left with fruit rotting
on trees, because the price
paid by supermarkets cannot
support the owners. Earlier
this week, Town Councillor for
Urban Planning and Environment,
José Orozco, launched
the ‘Land Bank’ project, which
aims to, “reduce the large
number of existing abandoned
plots and address some of the
problems that this entails,
causing environmental and
socio-economic problems such
as fire risk, pest proliferation,
soil erosion, landscape degradation
and loss of land value,
among others.” With the help
of the Department of Environment
and advicefrom the Buscatierras
Rural Dynamism
Agency, Orozco explained
that the town hall expects the
project to, “regenerate the rural
agricultural environment,
whilst, creating wealth and
jobs and minimising degrading
images of our landscape.”
Jaume Albors, representing
Buscatierras, said that
the fundamental task of the
agency “is to put in contact
and mediate between people
who have abandoned land and
those who would like to cultivate
them.” The ‘Land Bank’
plan aims to, “reduce the high
number of 1,271 abandoned
plots in Altea, with the hope
of easing the environmental
problems at the moment, such
as the Xilella plague and fires”.
Said Albors. Interested parties,
either those with abandoned
plots, or anyone wishing
to cultivate them, have the
opportunity to find out more
at meeting to held at the Altea
Casa De Cultura, at 19.00h on
Friday September 13th.
Representatives will also be
present at the town’s Eco Fair,
in October.
Marching against
gender violence
Alfas,Albir,Altea
Learning the drill for the beach
SEVERAL local female
support groups have
collaborated to organise
a night against gender
violence in l’Alfas del Pi on
20 September.
This will include a march
through the streets from
8.30pm, starting out at the
Casa de la Cultura.
by Simon Russell
The evening is known as
the “Noche de Violeta” and
demonstrators will wear violet
coloured lights on the evening,
a symbol of the Spanish
struggle against gender violence.
The town’s Department
of Equality is backing the
demonstration and councillor
Raquel Guerrero also attended
the meeting. She also noted
that 13 women and children
died in gender related killings
this July alone across Spain.
Similar demonstrations
are taking place up and down
the country.
LIFEGUARDS and medical staff were
involved in a mocked up emergency
on Raco de l’Albir beach last weekend,
aimed at testing the effectiveness of
their surveillance and rescue work.
To start the drill guards had to spot a
“bather” in trouble out at sea and co-ordinate
a rescue. The medical staff then took
over, performing CPR on the victim (in reality
a mannequin designed for this purpose).
Health and Welfare Councillor Marisa
by Simon Russell
Cortes monitored the display and was happy
that all emergency protocols are in place.
This exercise is carried out every year at
this stage of the summer and also serves as
a form of refresher to pre-summer training.
Albir beach has three lifeguard posts, a
first aid station (including defibrillator) and
rescue boat making it one of the safest places
for bathers on the coast.
Javea
Going for green
OVER 100 hostelries in
Javea have signed up to
the new “Green Flags
Movement”, aimed at encouraging
recycling of
glass.
The campaign has been
launched by Ecovidrio, the
non-profit that deals with
waste glass in the area, who
by Simon Russell
have estimated that over
half of such material generated
in the summer months
comes from bars, hotels and
restaurants. Only about a
third of this is recycled, a
number they aim to boost
significantly. They have delivered
recycling bins to the
establishments taking part
IT’S TIME TO DELIVER!
“THE job of everybody
in Parliament” is to deliver
Brexit, according to
UK Prime Minister, Boris
Johnson, speaking on
Monday at the end of the
G7 summit in France.
Johnson also said he was
“marginally more optimistic”
about striking a new Brexit
deal with the EU.
But he refused to be drawn
on whether he would suspend
Parliament to stop it
preventing a no-deal exit.
Mr Johnson’s comments
come as MPs have started
talks to discuss ways to avoid
the UK leaving the EU without
a deal on October 31st.
by Simon Russell
by Alex Trelinski
Asked about the possibility
of MPs thwarting plans
to leave the EU at the end of
October, Mr Johnson said: “I
think it’s the job of everybody
in Parliament to get this
thing done.
“I think it’s what the people
want, I also think, by the
way, it’s what our friends and
partners on the other side
of the Channel want - they
want it over.”
Meanwhile, a no-deal
Brexit would leave the UK
at the mercy of US President
Donald Trump, Jeremy Corbyn
has claimed.
The Labour party leader
accused Boris Johnson of “cosying
up to Trump” because
“no-deal Brexit is really a
Trump-deal Brexit”.
Mr Corbyn said he believes
the EU referendum result
is being hijacked by those
wanting what he called a
“bankers’ Brexit”.
He said:- “The Tories are
going out with their begging
bowl to billionaire hedge
funders to raise cash for an
autumn general election.”
“The chaos and uncertainty
caused by a no-deal Brexit
is a potential goldmine for
speculators betting against
the pound.”
Candy market in the
US looking sweet
YOU may not be aware
that Spain is the second
largest producer of
sweets and gum in Europe
(after Germany) and
they are now making significant
headways into the
huge US candy market.
Last year sales there totalled
€63, ten million more
than 2017 and about a sixth
of all the foreign sweets
bought in America.
It has also become their
biggest foreign market for
the first time and, assuming
Mr Trump doesn’t hit the
sector with tariffs, a figure
the industry here expects to
see increase.
The US market is an important
one, not just because
it is so big, but also because
people there have a notoriously
sweet tooth.

22 FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019
Business & Money
Do you need a
Spanish will?
IT’S a subject that no-one
likes talking about – but
it is a conversation that
everyone needs to have.
Have you got your affairs
in order if anything should
happen to you?
Estimates vary, but it
is generally agreed that
around two thirds of British
people do not have a will.
And if a British national
who owns assets in Spain
dies without a will, matters
can – and do - become rather
complicated.
The Spanish legal system
is very different when
it comes to the inheritance
procedure compared to other
countries like the UK.
It is also worth noting that
Spanish inheritance law also
varies from region to region.
Legal experts at Sun Lawyers,
a Spanish law firm
with more than 30 years of
experience and several offices
across the Costa Blanca,
say that makes it vital to get
the right advice.
Its spokesman says: “You
really must have a Spanish
will if you have property or
any other assets over here.
“We recently got a letter
from a gentleman about the
sad story of his wife passing
away and she had not made
a Spanish will involving her
property in this country.
“That has sadly seen extra
stress for him at a time
when he does not need it,
and it has also cost him
thousands of euros to sort
everything out.”
Having a Spanish will ensures
that the inheritance
procedure is straightforward
and less costly.
EU citizens living in
Spain, as well as a number of
non-EU countries, can now
choose whether the law of
their home country or their
country of residence applies.
If a foreign resident dies
without leaving a will or
making an official declaration
on which law they wish
to apply, the law of the country
where they resided for
the last five years will apply.
If your estate is dealt with
under Spanish inheritance
law, forced heirship rules
apply - known as the Law of
Obligatory Heirs in Spain.
This means there are restrictions
on how you distribute
your estate, as a certain percentage
needs to be set aside
for certain relatives.
If you die without leaving
a Spanish will, the laws of
intestate succession apply.
In Spanish succession law,
this means that the estate
will be inherited by the following
- taking into account
the Law of Obligatory Heirs:
• children of the deceased
• if there are no children,
the parents
• if no children or parents,
the surviving spouse
• if there are none of these,
then the next closest
blood relatives (up to a
fourth-grade limit in the
family tree)
• if there are no legal beneficiaries
from any of
these groups, then the
Spanish state inherits
the estate!
Making a Spanish will can
also help sort out what levels
of inheritance tax are likely
to be paid.
The rules and Spanish
inheritance tax rates vary
according to the relationship
between the donor and
beneficiary, although generally
unmarried couples
and step-children pay more
tax than spouses and natural
children.
You may already have a
somewhere to park the car
out of the glare of the sun or
the sandy rain?
Extensions to existing
of your property. Their
building company will carry
Derek said: “We’ve had
a number of jobs on urbanisations
want their own pools but
have very small plots. What
we’ve found is that if you
SMART MONEY
SAVING TIPS ON A
KITCHEN REMODEL
Sponsored By
REFINISHING, REFACING,
OR REPLACING CABINETS
KITCHEN cabinets can be
one of the most expensive
items to replace in a
kitchen.
To the naked eye, most
people can’t tell the difference
between a solid wood cabinet
and one that has a veneer
front. Instead, splurge on
functionality. Soft close drawers,
a well-placed pantry, and
solid sides and shelves are a
few items that will pay off on
resale and make a kitchen
function better.
Instead of replacing the
cabinets, look into refinishing
or replacing cabinet doors.
Refinishing involves sanding
or stripping the old doors
and cabinet faces, a timely job
that then includes repainting
to bring a fresh new look to
the kitchen.
Refacing a cabinet means
to actually replace the “face”
of the cabinet (doors and
drawers) with new ones.
While this option is more
expensive than refinishing it
is a much better job and has
a completely different end
result. If cabinets are solid
wood, this might save thousands
of euros over replacing
cabinets entirely.
STONE, LAMINATE
OR CERAMIC
COUNTERTOPS
This area is where prices
can skyrocket. However, if
given the budget, a stone
countertop can add endless
beauty and resale value to a
home. Ceramic counters can
also make a bold statement.
Just remember, style is subjective,
so for resale, stick
with a more neutral palate.
If a budget is tight, consider
adding a less expensive
laminate and add colour and
style with stools, furniture, or
a backsplash.
DIY AND HOME
IMPROVEMENT
5 kitchen styles
you will want in
your home
The kitchen has grown from being little more than a place
to prep food, to a fully fledged space you want to spend
time in entertaining and eating. Those in doubt should
consider the fact that Britons now dedicate more hours per
annum to this corner of the home than any other.
Few want to walk into a space that feels uninspired and
lackluster, though. With this in mind we’ve had a think
about five kitchen styles that will ensure walking out the
door is the last thing on your mind. From the exotic to the
ultra-modern, then, take a look below and see if you don’t
hit on the perfect idea for your own home.
THE BLANK CANVAS
Opting for simple, non-statement fixtures and fittings in
a neutral shade is far from boring; you can stamp some
personality on the place through decorations, artwork,
soft furnishings and products. This also means that, if you
ever want to sell, there’s less chance the estate agent will
recommend ripping the heart out of your address to appeal
to the mass market.
THE HOLIDAY HOME
Considering how well traveled us Brits are these days, and
how wildly varied our palettes have become, it’s no surprise
that more and more people are opting to style corners of
their home on their favourite global destinations. Popular
choices include Moroccan and rustic French. There’s no
reason these ideas can’t be applied to the kitchen, either,
and given most of them rely more on little details, rather
than wholesale installations, it doesn’t cost an arm or a leg
to make the transformation.
SCANDINAVIAN CHIC
From Norway to Denmark, the
Scandinavians can teach the
world plenty about interior design.
Although hard to pull off on a
budget, with simple wood finishes,
clean lines and very well made
fixtures you can guarantee that,
if done properly, your kitchen will definitely look the part,
meaning you’ll probably start having to ask people to leave
when they come round for a nosy.
THE TRADITIONAL COTTAGE
Again, this is never going to be the cheapest option, but by
buying in some larger equipment such as an Aga or similar
oven, opting for darker pine or oak finishes, and getting
yourself a large dining table made from natural materials
you can easily bring some of the countryside into the city.
Or, if you live in the country already, ensure you’re in tune
with the aesthetics of the area outside your front door.
THE ULTRA-MODERN
Although ‘shades of grey’ calls into mind something a little
(read: a lot) more erotic than your kitchen, dark marble,
themofoil and melamine- either in grey or black- are
definitely en vogue right now. And, if you invest in quality,
there’s little chance they will start to look outdated as the
years roll by- a major factor to consider whenever you’re
forking out for new cupboards.

CABINET
HARDWARE
Cabinet handles, pulls,
and knobs are known as the
“jewellery” of the kitchen.
These inexpensive items
can make a real change in
a kitchen that needs a little
facelift. Changing out cabinet
hardware is a fast, easy,
and often less expensive
solution that can change
the look of a kitchen in a
few hours.
BACKSPLASHES
With ceramic tile stores
now carrying thousands of
varieties of tiles, a kitchen
can come to life and make
a statement with a well
thought out backsplash.
Style, variety, and cost can
vary greatly, so remember
that when choosing and installing
a backsplash.
Keep the budget and priorities
in mind when deciding
where to spend renovation
money. Expensive items
such as structural changes
to walls or relocating plumbing
or mechanical systems
can quickly add up to thousands.
Be firm when deciding
which changes are being
made; endless changes can
cost extra money. Finally,
go visit showrooms to get a
sense of the style wanted for
a kitchen.
The kitchen is the heart
of the home, so taking some
time to do research before
making any changes can be
a smart move.
RIGHT AGENT
Av. de La Marina 44
WHETHER you’re moving
to Spain and looking
to buy or rent property, or
you wish to sell your house
in Spain, the process can
be stressful and exhausting,
especially if you don’t
know the language very
well and all the legal jargon
that surrounds the real estate
industry.
Instead of trying to do everything
yourself, why not get
an English real estate agent
in Spain to take care of everything
for you?
However, there’s a huge
number of real estate agencies
out there and although
they might seem similar, the
quality of the services they offer
can vary greatly.
So, how can you find the
best estate agent for you? Do
your research and look for
these five things in your estate
agent:
1. Make sure that they
pay attention to you. A
good Spanish estate agent
by Alex Trelinski
will answer the phone when
you call, reply to your emails,
send you any information
you ask for and if you want
to visit a property a second
or third time, they’ll help you
do another viewing. Basically,
look for someone who will do
all this at your convenience,
anytime you need it.
2. They’re on the internet.
Since 90 per cent of property
buying and selling happens
online these days, you
should be looking for an estate
agency with its own website
and a social media presence.
3. They should English
and have experience with
ex-pats. Not only should
your estate agent know the
local area, the market and
the legal framework, but also
how best to deal with your
specific needs as a foreign
buyer/seller. They should
also be perfectly bilingual in
Trust us to sell your property
Spanish and English to be
able to manage both sides of
the business. Don’t be afraid
to ask about their previous
experience and get references
from them.
4. Make sure they’re
fully licensed. Only use serious,
professional companies
with accreditation, registered
in the Official School of Estate
Agents (Colegio Oficial
de Agentes de la Propiedad
Inmobiliaria).
It’s not worth your while
risking your luck with cowboy
estate agents that almost
certainly had a different life
before they thought it would
be a nice idea to sell property.
5. And finally, look for
other signs of professionalism
and quality. Can
they help you organise a
mortgage? Do they have a legal
department?
Talk to friends who have
used these different services
and search for their success
of your real estate candidates
are.

LIFE IN A
CASTLE
by Alex Trelinski
SPAIN as a country has a magnificent selection
of strange yet beautiful buildings
that you can’t find anywhere else in the
world.
From masías in Catalunya and palaces
in Andalucia to pazo mansions in Asturias,
these houses also have such extraordinary
features as castle towers with battlements
on them, or Moorish arches and decorations.
Of course you have to pay, and many such
special properties tend to be on private estates
with lots of land, several buildings and
plenty of luxury extras, so they all cost well
over a million euros.
In fact you don´t have to got too far to
check a castle-style property, with one of the
market right now in the Marina Baixa area
of Alicante Province at Relleu.
This five-bedroom detached home comes in
at over two point five million euros, with 430
thousand square metres of land thrown into
the package.
The views are great, as you can be your
own king or queen of the castle.
30 FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019
Slowdown in
house price
growth
HOUSE prices in Spain rose by
three per cent on average in the
second quarter of 2019, new figures
have revealed.
That compares to four per cent
in the previous quarter and an increase
of 5.8 per cent in the final
quarter of 2018 – figures which
highlight a continuing slowdown in
house price growth.
The figures come from the latest
local market report published by
Tinsa, one of the largest independent
property valuation companies
in Spain. Its quarterly figures are
much anticipated by market watchers
and investors.
According to the report, the slowdown
is most noticeable in the city of
Barcelona where “after years of significant
rises” housing is now only
1.6 per cent more expensive than it
was 12 months ago.
The Spanish housing market had
been in decline from 2008 to 2015
before its return to growth in the
first quarter of 2016.
It ended last year strongly with
a 10 per cent increase in sales compared
to 2017.
Average prices in Spain have
increased over 11 consecutive
quarters, although Tinsa experts
describe the latest rise as “practically
insignificant.”
According to the report: “Prices
have accumulated a rise of 12.8 per
cent since their post-crisis minimum,
and now stand at 34.1 per
cent below the highest reached
in 2007”.
Among the largest provincial
capitals, only Valencia saw average
price rises of more than 10 per
cent in the last quarter, although
Palma de Mallorca, Zaragoza and
Seville saw hikes of more than eight
per cent.
And just three regions – Navarra,
Aragon and Comunidad de Madrid
– showed price rises in excess of five
per cent in annual terms.
The average time taken to sell a
property in Spain, which relates the
supply of property on the market to
the rate of sales, stood at 8.2 months.
Another set of figures, this time
from the government’s central statistics
unit, also reported a nine
per cent fall in registered housing
sales in June, compared to the same
month in 2018.
The figures follow an earlier
report by international property
experts Knight Frank, which looking
forward to the rest of 2019,
concluded: “There is expected to be
a stabilisation in demand and in
house prices.”
Analysts at Caixabank take the
same stance. They believe the Spanish
housing market is now entering
a “more mature phase” which
is highlighted by a weakening in
growth in both demand and prices.
In a recent report it said: “The
factors which support the expansion
of the housing market continue
evolving positively but are losing
dynamism.”
Its experts added that the supply
of new housing continues to “grow
vigorously”, especially in areas of
Spain with the highest demand.
And they added: “Moderation
should not be interpreted as a sign
of weakness in the sector, but rather
as a normalisation towards more
sustainable growth rates following
the strong growth experienced during
the recovery.”

LOVE THE
SKIN
YOU’RE IN
by Melanie Ratcliffe
SKIN – it’s the biggest organ in the body and in
the average person covers an area of two square
metres. It’s a clever organ too. Renewing every
28 days!
Everyone wants softer, smoother skin and a clear,
youthful complexion. We would also like naturally
healthy and shiny hair and strong pliable nails.
Can we delay skin ageing and maintain our youthful
looks? Let’s take a look.
You are what you eat!
The foods that we eat can have a direct effect on
skin integrity, health and even beauty, with well documented
studies showing that dietary changes can
improve skin structure, reverse symptoms and improve
appearance.
Health&Lifestyle
LOVE THE SKIN
YOU’RE IN
FROM LAST PAGE
Increasing our intake of
fruit and vegetables is a
great way to start ringing
in the changes. Introduce a
‘rainbow’ of coloured foods to
maximise intake of beneficial
skin nutrients.
Green leafy vegetables and
herbs are a few good examples
whilst other nutrient dense
foods such as berries, rich in
proanthocyanidins, support
skin health and boost a youthful
appearance.
Avocados contain the highest
fruit source of Vitamin E,
a fat soluble nutrient known
to protect against cell damage
by neutralising free radicals
which cause the skin to age.
Proanthocyanidins also
protect the skins collagen
structure in a number of
ways. Reinforcing the collagen
matrix of connective tissue
and inhibiting collagen damage
caused by inflammation
and infection.
Believe it or not, onions and
garlic are also items for your
shopping list too! Both contain
sulphur, an essential dietary
component that has a critical
role in maintaining the integ-
rity of connective tissue.
Be sure to add legumes,
whole grains, nuts and seeds,
especially walnuts and linseeds,
rich in omega 3, along
with sustainably sourced
oily fish.
Omega 3 fatty acids are
important for cell membrane
structure and fluidity, aiding
the skin’s appearance. These
beneficial fats have also been
shown to have anti-inflammatory
properties.
Extra virgin olive oil is another
source of beneficial dietary
fat to include, but save
this for salad dressings, it’s
not one for frying with!
Contrary to popular belief,
fats are not the enemies
we once thought. Not all are
bad. In fact, good fats, such as
omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are
essential to our diets.
Their role in maintaining
healthy skin cannot be overstated.
Our obsession with fatfree
diets has left many people
with chronic deficiencies in essential
fatty acids.
Symptoms include brittle
nails, extensive wrinkling and
dry, flyaway, or splitting hair.
Plant seed oils are one way
of topping up your omega fats
and may deliver numerous
health and beauty benefits.
Oils that have been shown
to aid healthy skin are golden
flaxseed oil, hempseed oil and
evening primrose oil.
Is your skin crying out
for moisture?
I’m sure you are all aware
of the importance of drinking
water when it comes to skin
health. It’s a simple, inexpensive
and effective way to
keep hydrated.
Many beauticians and nutritionists
alike recommend
drinking one to two litres of
water daily.
Try swapping your coffee,
tea, fizzy drinks and dare I
say your favourite tipple for
a glass of water. You’ll soon be
increasing your intake and noticing
a difference.
Why not try a glass of warm
water in the mornings with a
slice of lemon?
You can further support the
skin’s natural moisturising
mechanisms by applying topical
moisturisers.
A good quality body or facial
oil will permeate the skin
and support skin cell structure
enabling them to retain
moisture, cream based moisturisers
on the other hand sit
on the surface of the skin to
create a barrier.
Be savvy when selecting
skincare products and make
sure they are appropriate for
your skin as skin types and
needs will differ from person
to person.
Consider also the ingredients
in skincare products.
Are they naturally sourced
and organic? Are they full of
synthetic chemicals and artificial
fragrances?
Try to opt for products that
contain as few ingredients as
possible and that will be gentle
in their action, nourishing,
repairing and regenerative.
Some of the best topical
oils
Organic Coconut Oil – a
significant skin conditioner.
Rich in antioxidants and fatty
acids that penetrate into
the underlying tissues, it can
help with the appearance of
stretch marks and aid in the
prevention of premature ageing.
It’s a fabulous lip balm
too and great for applying to
cold sores.
Organic Rose Oil – Damascena
rose is a wonderful
anti- inflammatory agent and
tissue regenerator. High in
antioxidants with amazing
hydration properties, it can
also help reduce redness. Rosa
Mosqueta oil has also been
shown to be particularly beneficial
in wound healing and
scar reduction.
Sea Buckthorn Oil – Protects,
heals and regenerates
damaged skin by its high
concentration of natural carotenoids,
tocopherols, sterols
and fatty acids. Natural antioxidants
and fatty acids aid
reversal and damage caused
by sun radiation while minimising
long term effects of
sun exposure.
Organic Pomegranate
Oil – moisturises and nourishes
skin restoring the skins
PH balance, fights damage
causing free radicals leaving
the skin super soft and smooth
Lavender Essential Oil
– ideal for a natural first aid
kit. Well known for its wound
healing, cleansing and toning
properties and removing redness
and heat from the skin.
There also a number of well
documented nutrient and
beauty supporting compounds
that can be taken in supplement
form too.
As a fundamental building
block, a supplement containing
the key skin nutrients vitamin
C, beta carotene, biotin,
zinc, copper and selenium and
MSM is a worthy addition to
any skin regime.
Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol)
is one of the most researched
and effective ‘insideout’
cosmetics.
It’s a naturally occurring
complex of several bioavailable
antioxidant nutrients
and has been demonstrated
to protect and increase collagen
and hyaluronic acid levels
in the skin whilst improving
blood circulation to the skin.
FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 35
Health&Lifestyle
Stretching
more than the
imagination
DON’T seize up! That’s the
message from fitness experts
who are urging us to
fit stretches into our daily
routine or face increasing
discomfort as we get older.
The human body naturally
declines in function as it ages,
with ageing muscles losing
mass without the right exercise,
so any opportunity to reduce
the speed of the process
should be seized according
to experts.
Flexibility of joints and
muscles shouldn’t be taken
for granted and noticing increased
difficulty bending,
moving or reaching is the cue
to act before it’s too late.
Office workers who spend
the day desk-bound are
among the most vulnerable to
stiffening joints and muscles
IT may seem an age away
as we look to summer
days down on the beach.
But lifestyle experts say if
you want to get in shape
for Christmas now is the
time to start!
Focusing on your waistline
now will mean you can
face the festive season feeling
trim.
Here Simon Bandy, general
manager at dietary
supplement business Health
Plus, here shares his tips for
shedding pounds in the lead
up to the party season:
Eat breakfast like a king:
There’s an old saying, ‘Eat
breakfast like a king, lunch
like a prince and dinner
like a pauper.’ If you fill up
at breakfast it kick-starts
the metabolism, and gives
the body a tank of energy
to burn throughout the day.
Get in shape
for Christmas
Having the smallest meal at
the end of the day means you
won’t have excess calories
when you are generally the
most sedentary.
Be prepared: If you spend
time preparing healthy
snacks for home and work
then you are less likely to
fall off the dieting wagon. If
you have crudités ready for
when you are feeling peckish
or high-fibre snacks like
dried fruits and nuts around
the house, then you can curb
the hunger without the guilt.
Water: Don’t underestimate
the power of H20 when
you think you are feeling
hungry. More often than not
the body is thirsty so have a
large glass of water and wait
20 minutes before bounding
to the kitchen or the shop.
Simple maths: You’ve
heard the expression, ‘Eat
as the years pass, but simple
stretches can help sedentary
people stay supple as they
get older.
But anyone can have a go
at tackling increasingly poor
elasticity by rotating stiff
shoulders, aching ankles and
a numb neck, according to research
from the experts.
Fitness specialists at Vivotion.com
have researched
some of the best activities for
loosening up the body and encourage
people to give them
a try before they start to get
aches and pains in areas they
forgot they had.
They also point out that is
important not to overdo it,
so only stretch to the point
of brief and mild discomfort
rather than pain and always
ensure sufficient rest and recovery
afterwards. A spokesman
from Vivotion.com says:
“As we all age, our bodies
don’t seem to function as well
as they used to – but that
doesn’t mean a total loss of
elasticity is inevitable.
“The best way to steer clear
of major discomfort, inconvenience
or pain in older age is
to get your body moving a bit
more as soon as possible.”
STAYING SUPPLE
Here are the exercises that
can help stop you seizing
up:
STIFF SHOULDERS
Stand up or find a backless
stool, bend an arm at the elbow
back towards your body
and raise your elbow above
less and move more’ – this
is a simple formula for losing
weight. Fewer calories
in and more burnt through
exercise will result in weight
loss. Remember, to lose 1lb
in weight you need to burn
3,500 more calories than
you consume. To help aid
weight loss try Health Plus
Xtra-Slim capsules (£21.95
for 90 capsules) which create
a thermogenic reaction
in the body, burning fat cells
and allowing proper weight
management and helping to
maintain the metabolism.
Make the naughty list:
Don’t totally restrict everything
from your diet.
If you do this it is highly
likely you’ll break your diet
through binging on your taboo
food. Better to include a
little of what you fancy as a
weekly treat.
your eyeline; then lean your
shoulder backwards, and
rotate around until it has
drawn a complete circle. Repeat
this several times until
the joint feels slightly more
supple and then repeat the
motion in a forwards direction,
before following the
same process with your other
shoulder.
BAD BACK
When laid in bed, turn
onto your front, place your
hands flatly under the pillow
and rest your forearms by
your shoulders; then slowly
raise your shoulders (support
yourself by pushing with
your arms if necessary). Hold
the position for several seconds
or until uncomfortable
and then rest as required, before
repeating the motion as
many times as you can.
TENDER THIGHS
Stand upright, raise one
leg behind yourself and hold
the ankle against your bum;
balance on the remaining
grounded leg for as long as
possible, leaning against a
wall with the spare arm if
necessary, to stretch out the
raised thigh.
KNOCKING KNEES
Sit down and fully extend
your legs, one at a time, with
only the heel of the foot touching
the floor; then, keeping
heel and bum planted, raise
and lower your knee (causing
a slight bend) at a comfortable
pace.
FIRM FINGERS
Pop aching pockets of air in
your finger joints by pushing
down on your knuckles with
the thumb of the same hand;
playing an imaginary piano
can also loosen your digits.
HURTFUL HAMSTRING
Slowly try to touch your
toes in a standing position,
making sure that at least
your heel always remains
grounded, until the back of
your leg feels mildly uncomfortable,
then do the same
with the other leg.
ACHING ANKLES
Find a comfy seat, raise
your lower leg off the ground
and moving only your foot,
draw some clockwise circles
in the air (of several inches in
diameter) with your big toe.
This will rotate your ankle
and can then be repeated,
with sufficient rest and recovery
in between stages, in
an anti-clockwise direction
and before applying the same
process to your other ankle.
NUMB NECK
Without moving your chest
at all, try to touch the tip of
your shoulders with your
ears, to stretch the sides of
your neck. To work the rear,
tilt your head back to face the
sky and then roll your neck
several times, before repeating
in the opposite direction.
WEARISOME WAIST
Stand upright, face ahead,
place your hands on your
hips and spin your waist
around clockwise – imagine
a hula-hoop – at a comfortable
pace for a minute or so,
before reversing into an anticlockwise
rotation.
SQUEEZED SIDE
Either seated or standing,
firmly place your right forearm
on top of your head and
lean to the left for a moment,
before swapping to your left
forearm and leaning right.
CRAMPED CALVES
Face a wall, prop a heel
on the ground and touch the
wall with your toes; push
your body weight towards the
wall to feel your calf stretch,
hold for several seconds and
then swap legs and repeat.
WORKED WRIST
Keeping your forearm still
by holding it with your other
hand, clench your fist and rotate
your wrist in both directions
before repeating on the
other side.

Pets
Food for
DOG-LOVERS are being
urged to take care when
it comes to firing up the
Barbie after warnings
of the dangers al-fresco
cooking poses to man’s
best friend.
The warning comes after
a British Veterinary Association
(BVA) survey of its
members revealed a quarter
of them had had treated pets
for injuries caused by barbecues
last summer.
The most common barbecue
injuries were a result
of pets eating corn cobs, followed
closely by damage to
the mouth or internal injuries
from kebab skewers and
cooked bones.
Vets also reported treating
dogs for burns received
from eating hot food off the
grill or touching the barbecue
or hot coals.
In one case, a dog required
surgery to remove obstruction
caused by cooked corn
on the cob and the metal
skewers used to hold it.
Another vet reported seeing
two wooden skewer ingestion
cases last summer,
one of them a result of barbecue
remains left behind in
a public park.
One vet said: “Owners still
think corn on the cob is ‘natural’
so it can’t cause issues,
but I have seen worse gut
reactions to corn on the cobs
than to pointy toys, cocktail
picks or remote controls.”
Several vets also reported
seeing cases of gastrointestinal
upset or pancreatitis
caused by pets being fed one
greasy sausage too many.
In one extreme case, a
puppy died from inhalation
pneumonia after it tried to
swallow a burger but ended
up inhaling it instead.
And a nine-year-old
English Setter’s scavenging
during a barbecue led
to her needing surgery
last summer.
Vets discovered 16-cen-
timetre kebab skewer protruding
through her abdominal
wall. She made a
complete recovery.
BVA junior vice president
Daniella Dos Santos said:
“Dogs are well known scavengers
and will eat anything
they think is a tasty morsel.
“Corn itself is not poisonous
to dogs, but a cob can
cause an obstruction which
can have devastating effects
on the digestive system,
such as intestinal rupture.
“If an owner has any
concerns that their dog
has eaten something it
should not have done, we’d
advise contacting a local
vet immediately.
“We’d also urge anyone
having a barbecue to keep
other greasy meats, kebab
skewers and bones well out
of reach of inquisitive pets,
as these can cause serious
injury or illness that often
requires medical treatment
or even surgery.
“If you’re having a barbecue
in a public space like a
park, please clean up any
leftover food and skewers to
make sure other dogs don’t
accidentally swallow them.”
FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 37
GLIDING along the river with a
cocktail in hand, as stars twinkle
above me, I’m certain there is no
better way to travel.
Exploring a new destination each
day of a holiday usually means living
out of a suitcase and spending hours
on the road every night.
But memories of cramped coaches
slip far into the distance thanks to
Avalon Poetry II, the cruise ship which
is smoothly transporting my partner
Hayley and me to many of the highlights
of the Provence region in the
South of France.
The popularity of European river
cruising has rocketed in recent years,
and our dusk arrival into Avignon
makes it easy to appreciate why.
Our visit coincides with the city’s
annual arts festival and our immersion
in the event begins even before we
dock, thanks to musical performances
taking place alongside the river.
We come to a stop right next to a
fairground, so I finish my pina colada
and in just a couple of minutes, Hayley
and I are hundreds of feet in the air
on a Ferris wheel, struggling to believe
how much fun we’re having as we look
down at the busy streets below.
Arrivals like this aren’t possible on
big cruise ships. Due to their size, they
often dock so far away from city centres
that you have to take a taxi or bus
to get to where the action is. But river
cruising means we can dash off the
boat and find ourselves immediately
where we want to be.
Avalon includes a guided tour for every
city and town visited, so the next
morning we’re taken to the sumptuous
Palace of the Popes.
In the 14th century, Avignon was the
permanent residence of six successive
popes. The prestige and pomp of the
RIVER RIDE TO THE FRENCH RIVIERA
role is clear as we walk around the private
chapels and apartments of their
official residence.
Convenience is one of the main advantages
to this form of travel. Our
hotel room – and all our belongings –
sail with us. Croatian waiter Tomislav
knows my name, and my favourite
drink. The time spent travelling feels
genuinely enjoyable rather than a necessary
chore to get to the next port.
Modern ocean cruise liners are
equipped with cinemas, swimming
pools and a dozen bars, restaurants
and cafes, but being one of thousands
of people can be a touch overwhelming.
Poetry II carries just 128 passengers,
so the chances of us bumping into the
same person twice are pretty high.
Most of our fellow travellers hail
from the US, Canada, Australia and
New Zealand – with a few Brits added
to the mix – and by the end of the
week, we know many of them well.
Bob, an eccentric Kiwi, has a seemingly
unlimited supply of tales from a lifetime
of travelling the world flying hot
air balloons for a living, while Sue and
Kyra – a mother and daughter from
Vancouver – are full of excitement after
“abandoning” their husbands for
this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe.
Many of the long-haul travellers tell
us they opted for a river cruise because
they were anxious of making their own
way around a foreign country.
British holidaymakers probably feel
more comfortable negotiating French
customs and etiquette because it’s only
a short hop across the Channel, but
one big advantage of river cruising is it
removes a lot of uncertainty over how
much the trip will cost. On top of the
daily excursions, the price of the cruise
includes three superb meals a day,
plus beer and wine with dinner and
an unlimited supply of hot drinks and
cake. Pretty much the only time we
have to dip into our spending money
is at the very start of the holiday, when
we spent a night in Monte Carlo before
boarding the ship.
The principality – on the coast of
the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and
surrounded by France – oozes wealth,
from the yachts and supercars to the
luxury stores and flashy restaurants.
The feeling that we’ve entered a distant
world only grows when we step
into our hotel, the Fairmont, to see Mo
Farah in the lobby inspecting a white
Aston Martin DB9. We resist the urge
to take a photo and stroll casually past
the Olympian, trying to look like this is
a perfectly normal holiday experience
for us.
Monte Carlo is great – especially
if you have the bank balance to fully
enjoy it – but the comfort of our cruise
ship and beauty of Provence is the undoubted
highlight of our trip.
Avalon Poetry II moves so quietly
that when we wake up after the first
overnight sailing, I suspiciously pull
open our cabin curtains to check we really
have travelled to Arles.
Nicknamed the ‘Little Rome of
Gaul’, the city is packed with heritage
from the time of the Roman Empire.
Worldwide Horizons
FOR those who have yet
to visit this colourful city –
what are you waiting for?
It’s frequently ranked in the
top places to visit in the
USA, often combined with
a stay in Los Angeles or as
part of a tour of the West
Coast of the USA.
Originally given city status
in 1910, the boundaries of this
town have grown so much
that the original, and famous
‘Welcome to Fabulous Los Angeles’
sign was originally over
4km from the last building,
and now is less than 0.5km!
Whilst efforts have been
made by various top name hotels
to entice the family market,
by way of holiday theme
parks, these endeavours
have invariably lacked interest
and closed along the way,
leaving Vegas most famous
for it’s gambling and hotel
area, known as The Strip.
Consisting of over 4 miles of
glittering towers of hotels,
casinos, big name concerts
and top entertainment shows,
even the most committed of
travellers would be hard put
to get through this lot in a
short time!
Not to worry, you can take
your time and see it all. The
hotels in Vegas are quite simply
stunning, with 15 of the
25 largest hotels in the world
all located in this area. Top
end hotels are the Bellagio
and the Venetian, which have
resulted in many of the older
hotels also investing in refurbishment.
A win-win if you are
a guest at any of these hotels.
There are plenty of medium
range hotels to stay at also
(if your pocket money doesn’t
quite reach the prices of the
Bellagio, or if you prefer to
keep your pennies for the onearmed
bandits!). Hotels such
as the Flamingo offer plenty
for your dollar and still keeping
you in the central location.
So what to do in Vegas?
Well the pretty obvious answer
is the Casinos. Its hard
to turn around without being
in front of yet another way to
lose your inheritance. Or not!
Some casinos offer free lessons
on many of the house games.
Most would agree that it’s essential
to watch the games in
play too, to get a feel for how
they operate. And if you do
win, big or small, remember
to save it and walk away! If
not, for sure you will lose it all
again and probably more too…
Don’t forget that there are
many top performers entertaining
in Vegas year round.
Cher, Shania Twain, Barry
Manilow and Santana, and
that’s just in one month this
year! There’s year round entertainment
from the industry’s
top performers as well as
captivating magic shows from
Penn and Teller, or amazing
choreographics from the
Cirque de Soleil. Many of the
shows sell out, so it’s a good
idea to check for tickets before
booking your flights.
If you want to escape from
the flashing lights and beeping
noises of the machines
for a while, there are plenty
of alternative forms of entertainment
available. You could
also visit the Grand Canyon,
many hotels can book this excursion
for you, whether your
preferred mode is by bus or
by helicopter. Another not to
be missed experience is a visit
to the Hoover Dam, usually
around 3 hours for a guided
excursion of this awesome
structure, and perhaps with a
detour to a chocolate factory or
botanic gardens on the return
journey. You can connect with
nature by visiting the Lion
Habitat Ranch, a short distance
from the city. And if it’s
your birthday, they’ll even let
you in for free!

MERCEDES-BENZ LAUNCH
GLE COUPÉS
FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 39
Motoring
Final testing phase of
the new Golf has started
THE new GLE Coupé from
Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG
blends the
sportiness and elegance of
a coupé with the engineering
of the new large premium-SUV
model series from
Mercedes-Benz.
At the launch, powerful sixcylinder
diesel engines in the
form of the 350 d and 400 d
(combined fuel consumption
8.0-7.5 l/100 km, combined
CO2 emissions 221-197 g/
km)1 are initially available.
Together with the new 4MA-
TIC with torque on demand
and the wheelbase 60 mm
shorter than on the GLE SUV
they ensure a pleasurably dynamic
driving experience.
The petrol version available
at market launch is the
Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MA-
TIC+ Coupé (combined fuel
consumption 9.3 l/100 km,
combined CO2 emissions 212
g/km)1. Preparations are under
way for a plug-in-hybrid
version with a practical, locally
emission-free range as
for the GLE SUV.
The new GLE Coupés from
Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-
AMG are being presented to
the public for the first time at
the International Motor Show
in Frankfurt (12.-22.09.2019).
They will arrive at the dealerships
in spring 2020.
A new Golf is rolling up to
the starting grid, marking
the eighth generation.
The design and digital innovations
launch this bestseller
– of which more than 35
million have been built – into
a new age: the era of electrified
drives, a digitalised and
connected interior world,
assisted driving and onlinebased
functions and services.
The next generation of the
Golf will shape the era with
new impulses.
The camouflage lets onlookers
identify that the black
and white lines are disguising
a five-door vehicle with
powerful proportions. And
it makes no secret out of the
fact that it is a Golf – because
its visual DNA is unmistakable.
Anyone taking a closer
look will also see that the
“Golf” designation has been
integrated into the camouflage.
However, the camouflage
does not reveal one element:
the finer details of the
new design.
Klaus Bischoff, head of
Volkswagen Design, about
the vehicle: “At this time, we
will not disclose all details
of the new Golf, but you can
already perceive its elegant
proportions.” The head designer
continues: “The next
generation will be a genuine
eye-catcher!”
The countdown to the
début of number eight has
already begun: the new Golf
will be celebrating its world
premiere in autumn 2019.
Nuevo Clase A Sedán.
La gama Clase A se amplía con una nueva berlina que
pero con un habitáculo más espacioso y un maletero
más amplio de 420 litros de capacidad. Siempre
conectado, con un diseño vanguardista, con
inteligencia artificial con activación por voz MBUX y
Alex Trelinski’s
TRIUMPHANT
SNORKELLER
A Wiltshire man, who took part in this year’s bogsnorkelling
competition, has been hailed a champion
once again, but failed to beat his world record.
Bog-snorkelling was invented in the Welsh town of
Llanwrtyd Wells in 1976.
It involves competitors swimming through a waterfilled
trench in a peat bog and attracts people come from
all over the world.
The current world champion and world record holder
is Neil Rutter, who achieved a time of one minute and
18.82 seconds in the 2018 championships.
He won again this year in Wales, but the 34-year-old,
from Swindon, came in at one minute and 21 seconds.
Each to their own I say!
Back In
GREAT DETECTION
THE wonderfully-written TV show Detectorists
showed how nerdy such hobbiests can
be, but a couple have had the last laugh
when they discovered a five million pound
treasure trove.
Adam Staples and Lisa Grace, 42, made their
once-in-a-lifetime discovery while out metal detecting
together in Somerset back in January.
They discovered 2,571 silver coins that date
back a thousand years, and are from the time of
King Harold II, aka Harold Godwinson, who was
the last crowned Anglo-Saxon king of England
THE first thing I ever won as a kid
was a goldfish at a fair in Manchester,
which my dad then carefully
brought home in a plastic bag,
ahead of getting a bowl.
Over fifty years ago, that didn’t
seem cruel, but things have rightly
changed, with a Welsh pet shop worker
wanting the whole of Wales to bring
in restrictions.
Holly Homer from Barry has
launched a petition to the Welsh Assembly,
saying most of the time people
who win fish do not know how to care
for them.
The Welsh Government expects
to launch a consultation on animal
and who died in the Battle of Hastings by an arrow
through the eye.
He was only king for seven months so coins
from the period of his reign are incredibly rare.
The couple handed over their find to the British
Museum and any proceeds they earn from
them will be split with the land owner.
Over the last seven months the museum has
been cataloguing and assessing the coins which
were unveiled to the public this week.
Detecting therefore has quickly lost the
nerdy label!
Think of the fish
exhibit licensing before the end of
the summer.
Fish cannot be given away as prizes
in England and Wales to a person aged
under 16 who is unaccompanied by
an adult.
Some councils in England have
banned it altogether, but none in Wales
has done as yet.
Ms Homer, who is confident of getting
the 5,000 signatures her petition
needs to be debated by Welsh Assembly
members, said she is concerned
about the well-being of many fish that
are won.
The 23-year-old said people come
into her pet shop “swinging the fish
around in a bag” and asking to buy
a tank.
“They’re never aware that the fish
is going to grow huge, and they need a
proper filtration system for it, medications,”
she said.
She’s absolutely correct and this sort
of prize-giving really ought to be totally
banned...period!

Britain
BEN’S BURGER BINGE
HOW do you celebrate becoming
a national hero with one of the
greatest-ever innings to level the
Ashes series?
Well, Ben Stokes decided to go the
fast-food way, with a £55 drive-thru
McDonald’s.
Stokes scored a sensational unbeaten
135 at Headingley on Sunday,
including eight sixes, as England inflicted
a painful one wicket win over
the Aussies.
But after the post-match interviews
and a bit of chilling out in the
dressing room, it was time to eat as
Stokes explained:-
“There were quarter-pounders and
Filet-O-Fish flying everywhere,” the
DOGS are brilliant pets, but as we
well know, they are life savers as
well, including a new recruit to the
Scottish Fire and Rescue service,
the cool-looking three-year-old
English Springer spaniel, who is
called Mac.
He’ll be joining their existing search
dog Diesel, and they can help provide
assistance during long searches, and
as they are lighter, smaller and more
agile than firefighters they can be
sent into collapsed building if it is
28-year-old all-rounder commented,
after the Uber taking him and teammates
Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes,
Rory Burns and captain Joe Root
back to the team hotel was instructed
to take a detour via the fast food joint.
Stokes also paid tribute to his
wife Clare.
“Your family go though everything
with you, good and bad, so it is great
to be able to celebrate with them at
times like this,” he added.
“I didn’t actually see Clare until
late in the evening and I still had my
training gear on and my England cap.
“First thing she spotted was the
bag in my hand. She said: ‘Oh, so
we’ve been to McDonald’s have we?’”
MAC’S GEARED UP
I’m loving that!
safe to do so.
They could both be called out to
incidents anywhere in Scotland at a
minute’s notice, while they are both
also able to work in other countries as
part of an international search team.
Mac has just passed his grading
in Merseyside, and dog handler and
crew manager Gary Carroll said:
“We’ve had him since he was eightweeks
old so to get to this stage is a
real proud moment.”
“But it’s not just me that’s been involved,
my wife, my family and the
fire service have really helped us and
got us to the stage of qualifying.”
Suffolk-born Mac looks raring to
go, in another example of how man’s
best friend is so special.
DROP QUOTES
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to uncover
a hidden quote. A black-and-white
crossword-style grid is set up for each
quote, with a number of letters “hovering”
above each column. Your task is
to “drop” each of those letters into the
appropriate square in each column, until
the entire quote is revealed. All punctuation
(commas, periods, dashes, etc.) has
been removed. Good luck!
Mansell’s
Dorothy’s Friends
I rarely bother with the facebook
messages, urging me to click and paste,
if I have ever suffered from depression,
or know someone who’s had cancer, MS.
ME, Heart disease, ingrowing toenails
etc.
However one caught my eye, earlier this
week, when in celebration of the 80 th
anniversary of the fabulous Wizard of OZ
movie, I was invited to google, the film’s
title and click on the red shoes to the
right, after which I would be spun into a
world of sepia search results much like
Dorothy’s version of Kansas.
Now, as a confirmed ‘Friend of Dorothy’,
who knows all the words of Somewhere
Over The Rainbow, I couldn’t resist the
instructions and followed them to a tee.
And there it was ….. A little sepia tornado,
that took me back to being a small child
again for a few seconds. Aaaahhhh ……. If I only had a brain!
TRAVOLTA GAFFES AGAIN
You would think award show
organisers would tread carefully
when choosing John Travolta to
present one of their prizes, but hey no,
they still keep on wheeling him out.
He once provided one of the most
memorable moments in award show
history when he introduced ‘Frozen’
performer Idina Menzel as ‘Adele
Dazeem’ at the 2014 Oscars and at this
week’s MTV VMA awards, he made
another blooper.
The veteran actor appeared confused
when presenting an award to Taylor
Swift and instead attempted to hand
the award to a lookalike drag queen,
Jade Jolie, who impersonates the star
and appeared in the LGBTQ themed
video for her recent ‘You Need to Calm
Down’ single.
Ironically, Travolta had been so
anxious about reading out the winner
of the award at the VMAs that he asked
his co-presenter Queen Latifah to read
it out because he would “f**k it up”.
You sure did, John!
J ade or
Taylor?
NOEL’S IN THE CUPBOARD
As far as sibling spats are concerned,
you’d be hard pushed to find a more bitter
one than the one between the Gallagher
brothers, that’s been simmering along on
medium heat for the past decade.
Yes, it’s been ten years, since Noel,
walked out on Oasis, effectively finishing
the band off after an eighteen-year
career at the top of the charts.
Since then, the brothers have been
locked in a bitter feud, and have made no
secret of it either and that doesn’t look
set to change any time soon.
Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on
Radio X, after he was reminded of the
Hatton Ribeyed
I remember Mykonos, which I first
visited back in the early eighties
on a Greek Island hopping trip, as
a fantastic, slightly arty, very gay
friendly, cosmopolitan hideaway,
which although not as cheap as some
of its neighbouring islands, was still
affordable for backpackers.
Skip forward thirty-five years and that
tranquil piece of paradise, sits firmly at
the top of the celebrity holiday charts,
with eye watering prices to match.
Reading this week about, boxer Ricky
Hatton’s extortionate bill for a piece of
steak in one of the island’s tavernas, I
don’t know whether I’m more shocked
about the price of the meat, or the fact
the gobshite Mancunian actually goes
on holiday to Mykonos.
Look at the items on the bill and tell
significant anniversary by the DJ, the
singer, 46, said: “I know. Shame on him.
I wonder where he is in the world. I bet
he’s hiding in a cupboard somewhere in a
really dark room.”
“Mate, you can’t believe it? I can’t believe
it, mate. All was good in the world back
then.
“Ten years ago, all was good in the world,
and now it’s all went, you know… But I
think we’re doing alright again, so it’s all
good in the world.”
Not taking sides, but I must say I prefer
Noel’s new stuff with High Flying Birds,
than Liam’s, but that’s just me.
I’ll just have
an espresso
me honestly whether Hatton could tell
the difference between a 490€ bottle
of Dom Perignon, or a bottle of Tesco
Prosecco ….. and as for paying 920€ for
a steak? Don’t even go there!
Ed
Break
We don’t
speak
fter performing 260 shows on an
unbroken worldwide tour over the last
two years, Ed Sheeran has emotionally
announced he’s having an eighteen
month break from touring.
Don’t blame you Ed and seeing as the
tour has reportedly grossed just less
Ed’s
breaking up
than 900 million dollars, making it
the highest figure ever, beating U2’s
last record topping tour by a cool 40
million dollars, I’m guessing you’ll
have a few bob to keep the wolf from
the door over the next couple of years,
BURY BURIED
by Alex Trelinski
FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 45
Sports & Local News
Pego Golf Society
BURY’S expulsion from the
English Football League is
a “tragedy”, says Sports
Minister Nigel Adams.
The financially stricken
League One club lost their
place in the EFL late on
Tuesday night after a proposed
takeover by C&N
Sporting Risk fell through
earlier in the day.
“This is a very dark day
for English football,” Adams
said in a statement.
“It is a tragedy for the fans
of Bury, the local community
and everyone connected with
the historic club.”
Meanwhile Bury’s neighbours
Bolton have been
given until September 10th
by Alex Trelinski
OFFICIALS from Paris St-
Germain and Barcelona
met in Paris on Tuesday
to discuss a possible
deal for Neymar to return
to the La Liga champions.
Both clubs said the talks
were “positive” but there is
“still lots of work to do”.
Neymar, 27, joined PSG
from Barcelona in 2017 for
a world record fee of 222m
euros, with Barca said to
be offering 170m euros to
be paid after a year’s loan.
The loan cost would be
at least 35m euros, though
they may offer players to
reduce the cash payment
as negotiations continue.
The Catalan press, following
leaks from the
to find a buyer or prove they
have the funds to complete
the season, or they will be
expelled as well.
The EFL suspended the
withdrawal notice while
Bolton, in administration
club, suggested Neymar
was pushing for the deal
to go through, and wants
since May, negotiated a proposed
takeover by Football
Ventures (Whites) Limited.
It appeared the sale collapsed
on Saturday, with administrators
saying the club
was close to liquidation.
NEYMAR MEETING
to return to the Nou Camp
rather than a move to Real
Madrid or Juventus.
ON a day, which promised
to be heavy rain, 36 brave
souls turned up for the Last
Waltz at Oliva Nova playing
a 1:2:3 right through the
card, and more, playing
off the Ladies Tees for the
whole round.
The rain never came, and
we played the complete round
in lovely sunshine.
We had two guests today,
namely Richard Pike and Mr
Ray Bates, and both were
playing with the Captain Bill
Pike and were very warmly
welcomed by the same.
We had two two’s today,
and they were by Michel Grin
and Paul Sankey.
Balls in the water were
won by Mr Danny Herron
who correctly guessed the correct
total of 72.
Nearest the Pin at Hole No
5 with their second shot was
Stella Fox with 1.71 meters
and at Hole 16, nearest the
hole was Roger Brown.
In the main event, the results
were as follows:
First place The team of
John Chessher, Malcolm
Cannon, Celia Cronin and
Roger Miller with 86 Points
Second place The team of
Paul Sankey, Danny Herron,
Jan Jones and Carla Chaszczewski
with 82 Points.
Third place The team of
Malcolm Wise, Ray Bates,
Bill Pike and Richard Pike
with 81 Points.
Well played to the winners
with 86 Points, and
good to see John Chessher
in the points on his return
THE Formula 1 season restarts
at one of its most
iconic circuits this Sunday,
with the Belgian GP the
first of nine races that will
determine the outcome of
2019’s world title battles.
The race weekend at Spa-
Francorchamps kicks off the
run-in to the end of the season,
with nine races in 14
weeks in the build-up to the
season finale in Abu Dhabi on
December 1st.
The sport broke for summer
after the Hungarian GP at the
start of the month on a high
after a series of thrilling, unpredictable
races which saw
Red Bull and Mercedes win
from Malaysia.
In the team which finished
3rd, in the case of Ray Bates,
this was only the second time
he has been on a Golf Course
in his life, and he played very
well indeed, considering he
is retired from work. Well
played Ray.
Next Tuesday we are playing
a Stableford Competition,
and should any person like to
join us as a guest, please contact
the Shaun O’Gorman .
TODAY 23rd August Montgo
Golf Society played a 2
person Texas Scramble,
this was sponsored by
The Society.
First place went to George
Braddick and John Ross who
scored 42 points, second place
went to Richard Delaney and
Geoff Willcock who scored 40
points. There were two nearest
the pins won on the 3rd by
George Braddick and the 16th
won by Tom Atkinson
Next week Oliva Nova are
carrying out course maintenance
so we have a fun game
scheduled, this will be a Team
Accumulator and all players
will go off the Blue Tees. The
Society will also be sponsoring
this event.
BACK ON TRACK
by Alex Trelinski
two apiece and six different
drivers take to the podium.
Lewis Hamilton resumes
his quest for a sixth drivers’
title in a commanding championship
position.
Hamilton, who won eight of
the first 12 races, is 62 points
ahead of Mercedes team-mate
Valtteri Bottas after enjoying
the best start to a season of
his career.
But the prospect of Red
Bull’s Max Verstappen emerging
as the world champion’s
nearest challenger grew in
the quartet of races before
the break.

that they are not ready to
win the World Cup despite
a record 57-15 win over
Ireland last weekend.
The victory over a rustylooking
Irish side was the
biggest winning margin and
highest number of points
the two.
“Our aim is to be the best
ALFAZ FANTASY
FOOTBALL LEAGUE
WEEK 3
THERE was one monday
night game and a full Premier
League at the weekend
which gave the Alfaz
Fantasy Football League
31 goals (the highest so far
this Season), three clean
sheets, 35 yellow cards
and one red, which was
Brighton’s Andone who received
a straight red from
Referee Kevin Friend for
a vicious tackle on Southampton’s
promising young
full-back Valery.
There is no doubt the girls
are giving the Lads a good
run for their money as five of
them are in the top nine of
this Season’s Fantasy League.
Jayne’s team Up the Dale is
one of them and she is sharing
the top spot with Macca’s
like a house on fire and at the
moment they have a three
point lead at the top over
Catherine’s Pompey Hammers
points thanks to a little help
from Liverpool’s Mo Salah
who was this weeks top Fantasy
Player with 15 points to
his name. Isobel’s team The
Bluebells are in 3rd spot followed
by Pauline’s Vodka
it’s young Ollie’s Team Olly
Liverpool.
With over 30 goals being
scored there was plenty of
points to be had in our Across
the Costa’s Golden Boot
for Pedro scored 41 points
which took them right to the
Summit by replacing Jayne’s
Up the Dale. Tony Red’s Miles
Plattng Swifts are still flying
around the Summit and
are well in contention in 4th
place along with Macca’s Albir
Brooks Koepka in Atlanta.
He pocketed £12.2m - a
prize fund he has previously
questioned.
“To play like that alongside
Brooks and win, it’s awesome,”
said McIlroy.
SPANISH SILVERSTONE ROMP
SPANISH riders grabbed the
top three places last Sunday,
as Alex Rins snatched
a dramatic victory on the
line on his Suzuki to win the
British Grand Prix ahead of
MotoGP world champion
Marc Marquez.
Marquez appeared to have
held off the younger Spaniard,
only for Rins to produce a
spectacular piece of riding for
his second win of the season.
But Marquez still extended
his lead in the Championship
to 78 points after secondplaced
Andrea Dovizioso of
Italy suffered a bad crash on
the first lap.
Another Spaniard, Maverick
Vinales, was third, with
Valentino Rossi a place further
back.
Rins and Marquez are not
on good terms, so the emotions
by Alex Trelinski
multiple occasions is a pretty
big deal. Any time you can do
something which only Tiger
Woods has done, you know
you’re doing something right.”
“Three wins, another FedEx
Cup, a Players Championship,
which I’ve never won
before, this season is right up
there with one of the best I’ve
played. People will maybe
look and say I haven’t won
any majors this year, but I
feel like I’ve played some of
the best golf of my career so
I will rate this 2019 season
very highly.”
by Alex Trelinski
were stark on the podium afterwards
as Rins celebrated
his second win of the year,
having won the Grand Prix of
the Americas in April.
“This is unbelievable,” said
Rins. “I don’t have words to
explain this.”
It was another disappointment
for Marquez, who had
begun on pole position, as the
same thing happened to him
last time out in Austria.
But the Honda rider is still
78 points clear of nearest challenger
Dovizioso in the riders’
standings with only seven races
remaining and on course for
his sixth world title.
There’s a bit of breathing
space now for the riders until
the San Marino MotoGP on
Sunday September 15th.

THE Spanish Grand Prix
the sport’s commercial
with the season set to expand
to a record 22 races
next year.
The race will continue
to be held at the Circuit de
Barcelona-Catalunya, on the
outskirts of the city, for the
30th straight year.
COOL HAND LUKE
LUKE Campbell will produce
“one of the biggest
upsets in British boxing
history” by beating Vasyl
trainer Shane McGuigan.
Campbell, 31, can win Lomachenko’s
WBA and WBO
world lightweight titles this
Saturday at London’s O2
Arena and claim the vacant
WBC belt.
But Lomachenko, 31, is a
away some of his qualities,”
McGuigan told the BBC.
“I expect one of the best
technical fights in the UK
ever. Two Olympic gold
fighters, full of power, speed
and I expect one of the biggest
upsets in British boxing
history.”
IT’S game on in the Ashes
series as the fourth test
starts at Old Trafford on
Wednesday, with Australia
and England having won
one match each.
Ben Stokes’ astonishing 135
not out last Sunday repeated
his World Cup heroics and
gave England their greatest
victory at Headingley(even
including the 1981 Botham-
Willis test) to keep the Ashes
series against Australia alive.
In the chase of an England
record 359 at a delirious
Headingley, the home side still
needed 73 when Stokes was
joined by last man Jack Leach,
who helped the all-rounder
keep up his charge, by scoring
by Alex Trelinski
a priceless undefeated single,
and showing better defensive
technique than some of his colleagues
up the order.
Whatever the words that
came out of the shell-shocked
Australian camp after the
match, the sheer disbelief at
what happened, plus wasted
opportunities to dismiss England
at the death, will have
dented morale ahead of next
week’s Old Trafford showdown.
The reality though is
that with two matches
remaining(the last one being
at The Oval), the Aussies still
only have to win one of those
contests to retain the Ashes.
All the momentum though
is with England, after their
recovery from being skittled
out for a disgraceful 67 in the
first innings.
Questions though remain to
be answered over the top order
and it’s failure to deliver any
kind of opening stand, especially
with Jason Roy unable
to bring his natural talent to
the fore.
Australia will also have the
brilliant Steve Smith back in
their side, as the best Ashes series
since the 2005 classic continues,
on the back of perhaps
the greatest-ever test match,
and certainly most memorable
individual innings, courtesy of
Ben Stokes.
