Marching against
gender violence
Alfas,Albir,Altea
Learning the drill for the beach
SEVERAL local female
support groups have
collaborated to organise
a night against gender
violence in l’Alfas del Pi on
20 September.
This will include a march
through the streets from
8.30pm, starting out at the
Casa de la Cultura.
by Simon Russell
The evening is known as
the “Noche de Violeta” and
demonstrators will wear violet
coloured lights on the evening,
a symbol of the Spanish
struggle against gender violence.
The town’s Department
of Equality is backing the
demonstration and councillor
Raquel Guerrero also attended
the meeting. She also noted
that 13 women and children
died in gender related killings
this July alone across Spain.
Similar demonstrations
are taking place up and down
the country.
LIFEGUARDS and medical staff were
involved in a mocked up emergency
on Raco de l’Albir beach last weekend,
aimed at testing the effectiveness of
their surveillance and rescue work.
To start the drill guards had to spot a
“bather” in trouble out at sea and co-ordinate
a rescue. The medical staff then took
over, performing CPR on the victim (in reality
a mannequin designed for this purpose).
Health and Welfare Councillor Marisa
by Simon Russell
Cortes monitored the display and was happy
that all emergency protocols are in place.
This exercise is carried out every year at
this stage of the summer and also serves as
a form of refresher to pre-summer training.
Albir beach has three lifeguard posts, a
first aid station (including defibrillator) and
rescue boat making it one of the safest places
for bathers on the coast.
