4 FRIDAY 30TH AUGUST 2019 www.weekender.news Did the earth move for you? by Simon Russell AN earthquake struck the Marina Alta at around 10 in the evening last Wednesday night (21 August). The quake was felt by many people in Javea, Teulada, Denia, Benitatxell and Pedreguer, prompting a number of calls to the authorities. While there were fears that the rumbling could have been anything from a gas explosion to a car crash, there have been no reports of any damage to property or injuries to people. The Geographic Institute later confirmed that the earthquake measured 2.8 on the Richter Scale and had its epicentre in Poble Nou de Benitatxell. Tremors are relatively common on the southern Costa Blanca and Murcia - where a number of people died in one such incident in Lorca a few years ago - but are rarer this far north on the coast. Red Cross to the rescue by Simon Russell A Red Cross patrol boat and helicopter saved the lives of two people who had fallen into the sea at a remote part of the Denia coastline last week. The pair were part of a group of youngsters who were walking at Cova Talla when they were dragged into the water by a freak wave. They managed to cling to some rocks but were unable to get to shore and others in the group contacted the authorities. Despite the rough sea conditions - the red flag had been flying on many Denia beaches - an inflatable patrol boat and two lifeguards quickly reached the scene. A second vessel soon arrived as well as the helicopter. Two of the lifeguards jumped in the water and managed to get the victims to the relative safety of a nearby cave. A third guard then took the land route and guided them to safe ground. One man was treated for abrasions at the local health centre but his condition is not serious. The rescuers were praised for their bravery in the dangerous conditions. Grandfather runs over wife and grandchild A 21 month old child is in hospital in a “very serious condition” after being run over by her grandfather’s car in what appears to be an unlucky accident. The incident happened in Cuenca and the girl’s grandmother was also struck by the vehicle and has suffered several injuries.
