3. LE MORNE
BRABANT
THE FIRST SLAVES ARRIVED
IN MAURITIUS DURING THE
DUTCH PERIOD. THE SLAVE
TRADE SUBSEQUENTLY
CONTINUED WITH THE
FRENCH AND ENGLISH
SETTLERS. LE MORNE
BRABANT, A MOUNTAIN
LOCATED ON THE SOUTH-
WESTERN TIP OF THE
ISLAND, WAS ONCE A
REFUGE FOR RUNAWAY
SLAVES WHO TRIED TO
ESCAPE THEIR MASTERS.
IT IS A LANDSCAPE THAT
REPRESENTS A PAINFUL
PAGE OF OUR HISTORY.
Black River
Saltpans
A small community had
settled in the caves and on
the top of the mountain and
had begun to cultivate the
land there to live. Remnants
were discovered during
excavations, supporting oral
stories that were passed
down from generation to
generation, showing the
heroic deeds of these
workers. Originating from
the African continent,
Madagascar and South Asia,
the slaves built the island,
fought and sacrificed all in
the name of freedom. One of
the most famous, but never
verified, stories surrounding
this place was when the
runaway slaves saw police
officers, who were coming
to announce the abolition
of slavery, marching up the
mountain, thinking that they
came to capture them, they
ended their lives by jumping
off of the mountain’s peak.
Le Morne Brabant was listed
as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site in 2008, and today it is
possible to go hiking up to
the summit.
LE MORNE BRABANT
Les premiers esclaves arrivent
à Maurice à la période
hollandaise. La traite est par
la suite perpétuée par les
colons français et anglais.
Le Morne Brabant, cette
montagne située sur la pointe
sud-ouest de Maurice, a
autrefois été un abri pour les
esclaves marrons qui tentaient
d’échapper à leurs maîtres. Il
est un paysage représentatif
d’une page douloureuse de
notre histoire.
Une petite communauté s’était
installée dans les grottes et sur
le sommet de la montagne et
avait commencé à y cultiver la
terre pour vivre. Des vestiges
ont été découverts durant des
fouilles, étayant ainsi les récits
oraux, transmis de génération
en génération, faisant état
des actes héroïques de ces
travailleurs. Originaires
du continent africain, de
Madagascar et d’Asie du
Sud, les esclaves ont bâti l’île
et se sont battus et sacrifiés
au nom de la liberté. Selon
une des histoires les plus
connues, toutefois jamais
vérifiée, entourant ces lieux,
des esclaves marrons, à qui
l’on venait annoncer l’abolition
de l’esclavage, se seraient
jetés du haut de la montagne
en pensant que l’on venait
les capturer.
Le Morne Brabant a été
inscrit au patrimoine mondial
de l’Unesco en 2008 et il
est aujourd’hui possible
d’y faire des randonnées,
jusqu’au sommet.
THE BLACK RIVER SALTPANS
HELPED ECONOMICALLY
DEVELOP THE ISLAND’S
WEST COAST, AND
ALTHOUGH THERE IS ONLY
ONE IN OPERATION OUT OF
THE EXISTING FOUR, THEY
ARE NOW PART OF THE
CULTURAL LANDSCAPE AND
ARE WITNESSES TO A PIECE
OF OUR HISTORY.
This commodity, long used
for food preservation and
domestic consumption,
enjoyed prosperous trade
during the 19th and 20th
centuries, in the region
of Port Louis, where its
production started, and
Black River. That said, due
to the importation of salt
at prices that defy local
competition, this activity is
rapidly declining. Near the
bay of Tamarin, we come
across the last salt farmers
in Mauritius, kitted out with
their wide-brimmed hats and
salt containers on their head,
busy carrying out their work
with zeal.
LES SALINES DE
RIVIÈRE NOIRE
Les salines de Rivière Noire
ont permis le développement
économique de la région
ouest de l’île et, bien qu’il n’en
reste plus qu’une en opération
sur les quatre existantes,
elles font aujourd’hui partie
de son paysage culturel et
sont les témoins d’un pan de
notre histoire. Cette denrée,
longtemps utilisée pour la
conservation d’aliments et la
consommation domestique,
bénéficiait d’un commerce
prospère durant les xix e et
xx e siècles, dans la région de
Port Louis, où sa production a
vu le jour, et de Rivière Noire.
Cela dit, face à l’importation
de sels à des prix défiant
la concurrence locale, cette
activité décline rapidement.
À proximité de la baie de
Tamarin, on croise ainsi
les dernières saunières de
Maurice, munies de leurs
grands chapeaux avec des
bacs à sel sur la tête, s’affairant
à la tâche avec ardeur.
