It’s agreat romp and always good to see the baddies getting their comeuppance from three sassy women. These three actors were brilliant. Elizabeth Moss is more well know after her recent role in A Handmaid’s Tale. Tiffany Haddish has boomed sinceher role in Hidden Figures.And we all know Melissa McCarthy. Ididn’t know this movie came from the makers of acomic book series. The domain is wonderful and its size and grandeur says much for the foresight of the district’s founders and of the care lavished onit today for a team of dedicated staff. Courier comment People value such public spaces. Those with longer memories will recall the brouhaha when a plan was disclosed to put a road through Christchurch’s Hagley Park, and, here, you will recall the fuss when it was suggested Ashburton’s new sports centre go into the domain. $20,000 support Immigration New Zealand has offered Ashburton council an extra $20,000 to implement Welcoming Communities projects in the coming year. The funding is to be targeted on activities that support migration participation in the community. Council has accepted the offer and will use the money alongside other funds. Strategy and policy manager Toni Durham said the $20,000 was offered to all towns accepting refugees and Immigration New Zealand wanted to extend the number of towns. Sporting groups will study the plan closely to see how they will or will not be affected, and some may take the opportunity to make other plans. One group to be impacted isthe Ashburton Bowls Club, which has its two greens and clubhouse itreally is a house, but used as a clubroomin the heart of the domain. It is suggested in the draft that the club when its lease expires in 2028 could be relocated to the picnic area within the domain or to the EA Networks area. The move issuggested as the area it occupies is seen as afuture hub for the domain a starting point for people visiting the domain. It certainly is central. Club members, to their credit, have said little about the proposal other than that they will make submissions when the times comes. We are sure they will. He has run the Ashburton Club and Mutual School of Arts for 27 years. Before that, he worked at Brophy Knight and elsewhere as an accountant specialising in tax. ‘‘It just seemed the right time. January and February is quiet here, so it’s agood time for the new person tocome in and he or she can put their ideas into place.’’ Mr McDonnell said the club was in good heart and in terms of membership, it would be in the top 12 in New Zealand. In terms of bottle sales, it would beat any other club in New Zealand. Mr McDonnell said the club some time ago saw onpremise trade drop and decided then to push bottle sales. The bottle store is now the biggest part of the business. Membership, too, has doubled in Mr McDonnell’s time. When he joined, there were no women members but moves to bring them in but their inclusion and general growth had boosted member numbers. He said local support was the key to the club’s success, and its central location. Mr McDonnell oversaw the major extension of the club, and work is just starting on the rebuild of the front of the building. The club restaurant has closed and will be rebuilt on the ground floor, with the billiard room and office upstairs. Mr McDonnell said the biggest challenge was getting ‘‘bottoms on seats’’ with the club busiest onFridays, Saturdays and Sundays. But he sees astrong future in Ashburton and its growth. ‘‘The town will take off; we are confident of it.’’ Mr McDonnell said he had no firm plans other than to find his feet. John Keast Column Seven It is the time when we see election signs everywhere, except, of course, on the grassed area on the west side of the highway at Tinwald. They are not allowed there now, and it almost seems odd to come along that stretchof road and not see them. But we see them in paddocks, on fences, and on social media. We have even had an anonymous note suggesting that amayoral sign should not be where it is (on ahall fence)but we will leave that to the appropriate authorities, and apress releaseoutlining that some signs appear to have been stolen. ❑❑❑ Anglers will know that you can never have too many rods or reels or tackle, thoughthe numberofrods is not directly related to the number of fish caught.
