Retiring JPs thanked<br />

The work of four Justices<br />

of the Peace, Richard<br />

Conway, Rosalind Stewart,<br />

Bev Tasker and<br />

Brian Flatman, has been<br />

recognised.<br />

The JPs have all<br />

retired.<br />

Mr Conway was a<br />

travel agent for 54 years<br />

and was sworn in as a<br />

Justice of the Peace on<br />

April 29, 1980, serving<br />

the community for 39<br />

years from his West<br />

Street business.<br />

Mrs Stewart trained as<br />

amidwife in Invercargill<br />

and Christchurch and<br />

took up a position in<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong>.<br />

In 2000 she was<br />

ordained into the Anglican<br />

ministry and served<br />

the church for 19 years.<br />

She was sworn in as a<br />

JP in 1992, dedicating 27<br />

years of service.<br />

Mrs Tasker was sworn<br />

in in October, 1977, serving<br />

as aJPfor 42 years.<br />

As a young woman,<br />

Mrs Tasker, nee<br />

Woolley, accepted the<br />

challenge of being the<br />

national president of the<br />

Country Girls Club,<br />

which later amalgamated<br />

with the Young Farmers<br />

clubs.<br />

During her term in<br />

office she was awarded<br />

the Arthur Porrit Medal<br />

for services to youth.<br />

Mrs Tasker was an<br />

Mr Flatman was sworn<br />

in in June 1981.<br />

Mr Flatman, achemist<br />

for 39 years, became<br />

involved in swimming<br />

and was the caretaker of<br />

the Allenton pool for 20<br />

years.<br />

he worked as a<br />

He served anumber of<br />

terms on the JP council<br />

where he was instrumental<br />

in setting up aroster when<br />

asigning centre was set up<br />

at Community House.<br />

Bid to tackle<br />

problems of<br />

local business<br />

Southern Business<br />

Exchange is running a<br />

number of regional<br />

business exchange and<br />

training sessions<br />

around the South<br />

Island in an attempt to<br />

combat the difficulties<br />

that face small­tomedium<br />

businesses in<br />

the regions.<br />

The first business<br />

exchange will take<br />

place at the Lake<br />

House at Lake Hood,<br />

<strong>Ashburton</strong> on <strong>September</strong><br />

13 and will<br />

allow businesses to set<br />

up mini­trade stalls, to<br />

attend seminars to<br />

bring themselves up to<br />

date, and to connect<br />

with other businesses<br />

in the area to seek out<br />

opportunities for collaboration<br />

and knowledge<br />

exchange.<br />

A key presentation<br />

at the event will beon<br />

the new Southern Parallel<br />

Sports Campus<br />

project, which is likely<br />

to bring significant<br />

investment and strong<br />

economic growth to<br />

the Canterbury region<br />

and offer business and<br />

employment opportunities.<br />

There will also be a<br />

number of short seminars<br />

run by industry<br />

experts who will discuss<br />

the latest emerging<br />

trends, market thinking,<br />

legal requirements and<br />

digital opportunities for<br />

industries or businesses.<br />

‘‘We want to create<br />

an environment where<br />

smaller enterprises can<br />

connect and strengthen<br />

business ties, generate<br />

leads, and associate with<br />

industry experts who<br />

can clarify how the latest<br />

trends or government<br />

initiatives directly<br />

affect their business,’’<br />

said Southern Business<br />

Exchange co­founder<br />

Catherine Stuart.<br />

‘‘We aim to do this on<br />

a regular basis in<br />

regional locations that<br />

don’t require major<br />

travel arrangements or<br />

time away from the<br />

business for our attendees.’’<br />

The <strong>Ashburton</strong> Business<br />

Exchange runs<br />

from 10am to 4pm.<br />
