Nurturing life with Seeds of Love
And one of those many attractions is the Seeds of Love initiative;
a year-round opportunity to engage with the BVI community and
environment in a meaningful way. The devastation caused by
Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September 2017, was a reminder
not only to its people but to the world, that small island territories
are more than ever vulnerable to climate change and their very
existence, threatened by such brutal meteorological events.
In response, awareness and fund-raising campaigns were launched
and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines donated 3,000 fruit trees to
boost the initial replanting process – planned and scheduled so as
to optimally structure the efforts of volunteers and voluntourists.

Parmi lesquelles, le projet Seeds of Love : ou l’opportunité d’une
immersion engagée. Les ravages causés par les ouragans Irma
et Maria en septembre 2017 ont en effet souligné la vulnérabilité
exacerbée des petits territoires insulaires face au changement
climatique, et la menace que constituent ces violents phénomènes
météorologiques, pour leur existence.
En réaction, des campagnes de sensibilisation et levées de fonds ont
été lancées tandis que Saint-Vincent et les Grenadines offrait 3000
arbres fruitiers pour enclencher le processus de revégétalisation –
structuré de manière à optimiser les efforts des volontaires et
volontouristes.
The project involves planting: coconut palms in beach areas
to prevent erosion; white cedars to also serve as wind breaks;
mangrove seedlings in the wetlands, essential marine life
habitats and breeding areas – in addition to a myriad of
indigenous species meant to speed natural repopulation,
provide ground cover, root systems to hold moisture and soil,
and provide food for the birds, insects and animals that depend
on them. Seeds of Love was then born of a mutual desire to
address the archipelago’s natural vulnerabilities while also
promoting sustainable development through tourism as one of
its core industries.
Le projet consiste à planter : des cocotiers sur les plages, contre
l’érosion ; des cèdres blancs servant également de rempart au
vent ; des palétuviers dans les mangroves, zones d’habitat et de
reproduction essentielles à la faune marine – ainsi qu’une myriade
d’espèces endémiques vouées à accélérer la repopulation naturelle, à
fomenter une couverture végétale et des racines assurant l’humidité
et l’intégrité des sols, et à assurer l’alimentation des oiseaux,
insectes et animaux qui en dépendent. Seeds of Love est donc né
d’une volonté partagée de prendre en compte les vulnérabilités
naturelles de l’archipel, tout en impulsant le développement durable
à travers le tourisme, son cœur d’activités.
