For most adults, job interviews can
be extremely stressful. Assuming you
don’t work with a recruiter when
searching for a job, an interview is
often the end of a long, arduous process
of applying for many jobs that
may or may not fit your expertise
and hoping for that phone call or
email that says an employer wants
to meet with you. As normal as it is
to be nervous during an interview,
those nerves can cause you to make
a poor first impression that may not
be a true reflection of yourself or
your skills. Below are some tips for
how to give the best first impression
and show potential employers your
true value.
Research the company in advance,
so you walk in with a good base of
knowledge. This shows that you are
truly interested in the business, not
just looking for any job that comes
along. Doing your homework ahead
of time also gives you the head
space to allow your nerves to settle.
When you already know about the
company and have prepared relevant
points to discuss, it builds your
confidence in what to say.
Body language plays a massive
role in how other people perceive
us. Before we even speak, the other
person is reading our body language
and making assumptions,
oftentimes without realizing it. When
meeting a potential employer for the
first time, maintain eye contact and
give them a steady handshake. If
you tend to frown a lot or have an
unapproachable resting face, practice
smiling in a mirror, so you know
what it feels like to give a confident
smile that doesn’t look forced. Also,
be aware of your hands and body
movements. Crossed arms indicate
someone who is either closed off or
hiding something — not exactly the
vibes you want to send to an interviewer.
Fiddling with your hands or
shifting in your seat can also give an
impression that you are uncomfortable
or unsure of yourself.
As with most activities, practice
makes perfect. Whether you are
fresh out of college or making a
career change, chances are your
interviewing skills need some work.
Enlist a friend or family member to
HOW
help you prepare by holding a mock
interview. This gives you the opportunity
to fine-tune your interviewing
skills and shake off any initial nerves.
Have an answer ready for the
generic questions most employers
use during the interviewing process.
What are your strengths? What are
your weaknesses? When was the last
time you encountered a challenging
situation, and how did you handle it?
Give a lot of thought ahead of time
to what examples and answers you
want to give a potential employer.
You want to be seen as valuable
but also be honest. For example, my
main weakness is that I’m a procrastinator.
However, I make sure to follow
up that confession with how I turn my
weakness into a strength by telling
the prospective employer I set hard
deadlines for myself, making my time
management skills top-notch.
One thing that most people seem
to forget during an interview is that
you aren’t the only one being judged.
This is also your time to see if the
company you’re interviewing with
is the right fit for you. It doesn’t do
anyone any good to interview for a
job, accept it just because they gave
you an offer, and then realize a few
weeks later that you’re miserable or
just not a good fit for the company
or position. It’s a waste of your time
Impress Potential Employers With a Great First Impression!
by Lauren Salinero
Even the
smartest and
most-qualified
job seeker
needs to
prepare for a
job interview.
and theirs. Have a set of questions
ready for your interviewer. You want
to show you are serious about your
interest, but also that you want the
best fit for you.
eXp Realty Orlando
Once the interview is over, follow
up within a day to say thank you to
your interviewer. This is also a good
time to answer or ask any questions
you didn’t get to or bring up research
that you discussed. The thank-you
will keep you in the forefront of
their minds. And, everyone likes
someone who gives a bit of extra
effort.
The most important thing to remember
is to be yourself. Granted,
you want to be the most professional
and project the best version of yourself,
but you still need to be true to
who you are. A lot of companies will
hire based on how you fit into their
culture as opposed to your exact skill
set. There are probably a dozen or
more other people with your same
skills applying for the same job.
Show the interviewer what sets you
apart as the best fit for his or her
company.
When you do land that perfect
job, be sure to let Southwest Orlando
Bulletin know, so we can include you
in the “In Your Neighborhood” segment
of the paper! ª
Many Central Floridians derive
great pleasure from gardening. They
have flower beds surrounding the
outside of their homes and beautifully
potted plants on their lanais
and patios. They enjoy caring for
their plants and watching them flourish
and grow. Connie Emmerson,
president and manager of Royal
Landscape Nursery, shares the
rewards of gardening with her customers
by helping them realize their
landscaping visions.
Connie’s family owns and operates
Royal Landscape Nursery in Gotha.
In addition to the 6-acre outdoor
garden retail/wholesale showcase,
Royal Landscape also has more
than 30 acres in Winter Garden,
where most of the plants and trees
they sell are grown. They specialize
in native and proven Florida foliage
and are able to price the items below
big-box home improvement centers.
Their tenderly cared-for stock
includes bird of paradise flowers,
white crinum lilies, dwarf firebushes,
Hawaiian ti plants, oleanders, tibouchinas,
red fountain grass, crepe
myrtles and crotons, to name just a
few.
Connie’s husband, Steve, oversees
commercial products and the
installation of new construction for
housing communities and apartment
homes. Their daughter, Mia, graduated
from college three years ago
and immediately joined the operation.
She supervises other aspects of
the business, including commercial
maintenance and social media.
Connie invites residential clients
to visit the nursery at 2204 Hempel
Ave. and stroll the kid-friendly
grounds. Visiting makes for a pleasant
afternoon excursion, and the
grounds are a landmark in Central
Florida. If you purchase any items
that cannot be taken home in your
vehicle, Royal Landscape Nursery
will deliver them to your door. On
the rare occasion the nursery doesn’t
stock an item you desire, Connie will
make every effort to find and order
it for you.
When planning home landscaping,
Connie encourages customers
to walk around their neighborhood
and take pictures of trees and bushes
they like on other properties. She
also suggests they make note of
whether they are planted in sun or
shade in terms of where they would
put the plants on their property.
Clients should come with ideas, so
Royal Landscape’s knowledgeable
staff can assist them with their decisions.
To that end, Connie makes
sure all their plants and trees are
labeled with growing instructions
and the proper amount of sunlight
required for the plantings to thrive.
Happily married for over
20 years with 3 wonderful boys,
my wife and I recently learned
of a child of mine who was
born out of wedlock 34 years
ago to a woman I once dated
in my teens. Although she was
pregnant when I last saw her, I am shocked to learn I was the father to a daughter,
now in her 30’s. Recently upon locating me, my daughter requested a visit to meet
me and my family. My wife was likewise shocked and reluctant to meet her. She
voiced her concern regarding inheritance by my daughter for a portion of our estate
should something happen to me or both of us. Is it true that if you have a child
born out of wedlock who you never knew of or met, he or she can inherit an
equal share or portion of your estate even though the child has never been a
part of your immediate family?
In the United States today, there are over 13.5 million single parents raising over
21 million children. Single mothers constitute about 83% of single parent families.
Imagine, nearly 39% of children born in the U.S. today are born to unmarried
mothers of which 60% don’t know who the father is and of which only half ever
have a father figure in their lives during their entire lifetime. Florida, at 47%, has
one of the highest percentage rates of children born out of wedlock in our nation.
So how do these statistics affect the future assets of the father who learns many
years later that he has a child born out of wedlock?
Far too often, the father of a child born out of wedlock seeks ways to avoid
When The Doorbell Rings
Children Born Out Of Wedlock
by: Kristen M. Jackson / Attorney
any responsibility for child care or may never know that such a child even
exists. Regardless, whether the father knew or not, the financial responsibilities
can follow the father for life, whether they are for years in back child support
payments or distribution of assets to the child during probate. The probate
bombshell is the one which often catches families unprepared and enraged.
Consider the following example.
William and Staci were married for 40 years before William’s death. Because
William’s business and the family home were in William’s name only and he had
no will or trust, it was necessary to open a probate to transfer the assets to
Staci and their 3 children. During the probate process, the doorbell rang one
afternoon, and Staci learned William had child out of wedlock long before
their marriage. The child’s name was Diana and there she stood before Staci
on her front porch. Infuriated, Staci and her children, now adults themselves,
engaged in a battle with Diana and requested that the probate court disallow
any inheritance whatsoever be given to Diana. Diana, having proved to the
court that she was William’s child and a rightful heir, was granted the same
entitlement provided to William’s other 3 children.
Before your doorbell one day rings one day, if you have children out
of wedlock or from a previous marriage that you wish to disinherit, contact
an estate planning attorney to discuss
potential consequences and your options.
“In order to take pride in the outcome,
the right plant needs to be in
the right place,” Connie said.
A means of landscaping that
homeowners frequently overlook is
the use of pavers or, as Connie calls
it, “hardscaping.” Adding hardscaping
effects to the exterior of a home
leads to an overall improvement in
lifestyle, convenience and an increase
in outdoor living space. Plus,
it increases the value of a home by
20% to 30%.
With more than 30 years of experience
installing hardscape projects,
Royal Landscape Nursery has the
largest selection of pavers in Central
Florida. They can be used to enhance
patios, pool decks, driveways, walkways,
fire pits and outdoor kitchens.
They can also provide easier access
to different areas on a property.
One of the newest features of nursery
products is all shapes and sizes
of colorful pottery that can hold up
to 30 gallons of soil. A recent landscape
trend is to place potted plants
in the garden in addition to on a lanai
and patio. These ceramic pots offer
another useful way to add color and
aesthetic appeal to properties. If not
too large, they can be brought inside
for protection when hurricanes are
predicted. Royal Landscape Nursery
carries an outstanding selection of
handmade, decorative glazed pottery
from Europe, Vietnam and China.
The company’s website — royal
landscapenursery.info — is newly
updated, and the gallery contains
beautiful pictures of plants, shrubs,
trees, palms, colored mulch and
pavers. Plus, there are often special
price offers and announcements
popping up on the site, as well as
landscaping tips and trends on The
Royal Blog.
Connie derives pleasure and satisfaction
from knowing her customers
are happy and informed. She has a
plethora of gardening information
to share. Don’t hesitate to call Royal
Oftentimes, when shopping, going to the doctor, choosing a
school or making other decisions, it is easy to overlook the fact
that every business is run by people. They could be your neighbors,
parents of your children’s friends, or even fellow members
n Orange County government
wins awards
The Orange County government
was recognized with four
Achievement awards from the
National Association of Counties.
The awards program seeks to recognize
innovative, effective county government
programs that strengthen
services for residents. The Orange
County’s winning programs included
the following:
• Text-to-911 in the category of
civic education and public information.
Residents and visitors in
Orange County can send a text message
to 911 during an emergency or
life-threatening situation. This is an
invaluable service for the hearing or
speech impaired, as well as when
making a voice call would place you
in a dangerous situation or when
you can’t get phone reception.
• Everything Is Brighter in
Orange County. Orange County
Government’s Solar Co-ops in the
category of county resiliency: infrastructure,
energy and sustainability.
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x September 19 — October 2, 2019 x 21
NEWS & BUSINESS BRIEFS
Orange County partnered with Solar
United Neighbors of Florida to offer
solar co-ops that provide bulk discounts
of up to 20% for groups of
homeowners interested in purchasing
solar panels. As part of this initiative,
the county also streamlined the
permitting process for solar installations,
allowing for new solar permits
to be processed in a single day.
• Opioid Crisis Response in the
category of county administration and
management. ProjectOpioid is a bold
new community consortium created to
combat drug abuse and addiction. As
Central Florida continues to grapple
with the rising tide of opioid addiction,
the program offers a new collaborative
approach to stem the tide of
tragedy and start saving lives.
• Sustaining Potable Water
through the Water Wise Neighbor
Program in the category of civic
education and public information.
compiled by Lauren Salinero
The comprehensive residential waterreduction
program involves customers
or builders who voluntarily agree to
meet certain benchmarks to become
as water-efficient as possible. In return,
Orange County Utilities provides
participants with devices and classes
that help them achieve their greatest
potential water efficiency.
n Lyft expands program
for nonprofits
Lyft officials announced the expansion
of its Wheels for All Grants program
to support the critical work of
Orlando-based nonprofit organizations
focused on building connected,
stronger and more equitable communities.
Beginning this month, Lyft
will open applications to nonprofits
in need of transportation partners,
helping to bridge mobility gaps for individuals
and families across the city.
Wheels for All Grants was developed
to help Lyft connect with its
local communities by providing free
ride credits to local organizations in
need of transportation support. In
Orlando, Lyft previously partnered
with The Community Hope Center,
a not-for-profit organization that
provides low-income communities
with gap services. Lyft’s partnership
enabled the organization to provide
homeless individuals with rides to key
locations, including medical appointments
and social security offices.
