SELWYN TIMES
Gardening without guesswork
The next few months are the best time to get your garden looking fabulous after the winter.
Preparation is key with gardening, says
Gemma Odering from Intelligro, so make
sure your garden beds get a freshen up and
your raised beds are cleaned and prepped
for the new season planting.
If you are thinking of creating a vegetable
garden for the first time, Intelligro has
a special veggie garden mix with all the
necessary nutrients needed to encourage
healthy growth and development. These
mixes come in bags as well as bulk so you
can grab a little or a lot depending on the
size of your garden.
If your veggie garden is already
established now is the time to dig through
some compost and fertiliser or, for a more
organic approach, sheep pellets or blood
and bone.
It is also the perfect time to plant seed
potatoes with Intelligro’s 2kg range and six
packs of Agria, Jersey Benne and Haylo.
They have a guide on their website www.
igro.co.nz with more information about
planting seed potatoes.
Weeds love this time of year, competing
with your plants for space and nutrients.
When removing weeds make sure you
remove the roots as well and are careful
not to spread any seeds at the same time.
It is also a good time to sow, repair
or fertilise lawns, says Gemma, and
Intelligro’s handy lawn guide on their
website provides plenty of useful
information about creating a beautiful
lawn this year. They also stock a good lawn
seed in both 1 and 5 kg bags and a wide
range of fertilisers and other products
including bark and compost.
When handling potting mixes,
remember about the risk of legionnaires
and make sure you keep yourself safe by
wearing gloves and a mask. Open bags in
open spaces not in an enclosed area like
a shed. Dampening down the mix before
use is also recommended and wash your
hands after every session in the garden.
Intelligro is situated at 261 Manion
Road in Rolleston and is open seven days
a week from 8am until 5pm Monday to
Saturday and on Sundays from 9am to
4pm. Their new phone number is 347
9012.
