Welcome back

A Note from the Director
For more than 25 years, Burbank Public Library has provided assistance for adults with low literacy under the
auspices of the California Library Literacy Services program at the California State Library. Each year, several
dozen adults whose literacy is below an 8th grade level are matched with volunteer tutors for a training
program that can span months or years.
Adults who have trouble reading are a hidden group in our society. With overall literacy rates in the United
States remaining consistently high thanks to a strong public school system, not being able to read fluently
can be a point of shame. Many become extremely adept at hiding their struggles, which may have a negative
impact on the individuals and their families. Low literacy can be the result of a number of factors, including
undiagnosed learning disabilities, negative experiences in traditional schooling, and life experiences that
interrupt schooling such as becoming a refugee.
The Library’s Adult Literacy Services provides a supportive environment for people who are determined to
improve their situation. Students work through an established curriculum to build their reading and writing
skills, and at the same time, they bond with their tutor, who can serve as a guide and mentor to the
possibilities that open up for fluent readers. Participants in the program set goals such as taking the GED,
filling out a job application, helping their children with homework or writing an email.
More than 2,000 people have passed through this program since it launched in
1992, and they have gone on to better lives. The program would not be possible
without the support of the State, the City or the Friends of the Burbank Public
Library, who provide funding. It would not be possible without the volunteers who
committed almost 750 hours in the last 12 months to working intensively with
learners. And most important, it would not be possible without people being brave
enough to ask for help.

Burbank Public Library will be offering unlimited eBook copies of After the Flood by
Kassandra Montag, an inventive and riveting epic saga depicting a world that has been
utterly transformed. After years of slowly overtaking the continent, rising floodwaters
have obliterated America’s great coastal cities and then its heartland, leaving nothing but
an archipelago of mountaintop colonies surrounded by a deep expanse of open water.
After the Flood will be available free for download October 7—21, 2019 and there will be no waitlists or
holds for the title. Only your Burbank Library card, and the Libby app are needed to download the eBook.
The Libraries Transform Book Pick is brought to you by the American Library
Association and OverDrive. For additional information about the program
and eBook and additional resources like a discussion guide, please visit

Kassandra Montag grew up in rural Nebraska and now lives
in Omaha with her husband and two sons. She holds a
master’s degree in English Literature and her award-winning
poetry and short fiction has appeared in journals and
anthologies. After the Flood is her first novel.

and service to benefit the Burbank community.
To help us celebrate, stop by the Central Library on
Saturday, October 19, from 12-5 pm or the Buena
Vista Branch Library on Monday, October 21, from
