A Note from the Director Elizabeth Goldman Library Services Director This month, Burbank Public Library is seeking your input to help us plan the future. As an organization that seeks to build a stronger community by providing opportunities and access for all to learning and discovery, we periodically need to take a step back and find out if we’re on the right track. A survey that is currently available online and at all Burbank Public Library sites will provide us with the input we need to determine priorities for our work in the next few years. The survey comes as the Library’s first strategic plan finishes up and we start work on our next guiding document. As a result of the previous survey in 2016, as well as conversations with community groups and analysis of trends and demographics, we implemented many improvements to our services. These include refreshing our collection of Library materials in languages other than English, expanding training in basic technology skills, and launching a program to improve access for Burbank Unified School District students. We have developed a learning culture among our staff so we can be prepared to assist our Library users as the world continues to change at a furious pace. We have expanded relationships with community partners to ensure we are better supporting our users who are experiencing homelessness while making Library sites safe and comfortable for everyone. And we have implemented customer service standards and training with the goal that each time you interact with us, your experience is equally good. As we look forward to the next few years, while providing access to reading and viewing material will remain our core service, we also know we need to continue to evolve. What exactly that looks like has a lot to do with what you tell us. How do you use the Library today? What impact are we having on your life, big or small? How can we continue to give you that experience? What could we do to make the Library even more positive or meaningful to your life or the lives of your family, friends and neighbors? Are there needs in the community where we could be part of the solution? In everything we do, our goal is to be responsive to our community and support the Burbank of the present and the future. Your library means a lot to you - and your library story means the world to us! “Besides my home the Buena Vista Library is... probably my favorite spot in Burbank. My favorite library memory, though, is probably when I was there waiting for my son to get his books, and I saw a poster about Burbank RISE. It’s a leadership and volunteer program for Burbank residents. I did a program, learned even more about the library and the city, and am so glad that I did. Thank you to the helpful children’s librarians all those years ago, who helped two little girls find good stories to read and become enthralled in the written word. I now team up with my high school pal Mike McDaniel to do Burbank historical slideshows in the Buena Vista library, and am proud to say that we have three books of our own in the Burbank library system.
