eading recommendations from our librarians Gracias by Pat Mora is a great bilingual Spanish & English picture book that follows a Latino boy and what he is thankful for in his life. This is a sweet read with beautiful illustrations showing the boy’s family and friends Ten Thank-You Letters by Daniel Kirk – Good for elementary aged readers, this book demonstrates how good we can make others feel when we take the time to acknowledge their thoughtfulness. An Awesome Book of Thanks! by Dallas Clayton celebrates things to be thankful for, from things that we see every day to the bad things that may turn out being good. Good for preschool to 2nd grade. Feast for 10 by Cathryn Falwell is a simple picture book that shows an African American family preparing for a family meal. The counting and variety of foods are great to read to toddlers. Thank you, Earth by April Pulley Sayre – An exploration of the beauty & complexity of the world around us. It’s a beautiful book, good for Earth Day but also a good read for the family when acknowledging what we are thankful for. Giving Thanks : More Than 100 Ways to Say Thank You by Ellen Surrey explores the meaning of thankfulness. Join one boy as he thinks about the people in his life he’d like to thank, the many reasons to be grateful, and the different ways of showing affection and gratitude to the people we love. Thank You Bees by Toni Yuly – This book has repetitive text and big bright pictures, making it a good choice for beginning readers. It features a child expressing gratitude for the often overlooked yet essential natural elements like the sun, the rain, and trees. Spoon by Amy Krouse Rosenthal is a favorite of mine. It is a sweet book about being thankful and appreciative for who you are and what makes you special. The Thank You Book by Mo Willems is a sweet and silly introduction to expressing gratitude from one of the greatest duos in children’s literature, Elephant and Piggie. Thank you Ashley, Donna, Jenny, Jennifer, & Nicole Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Peña – Grandma and her grandson CJ always take the bus across town on Sundays to Market Street. One Sunday CJ wonders why they don’t own a car like his friend & always have to take the bus. His Grandmother opens his eyes to the real beauty in the world around him. It’s a touching read for preschoolers through Kindergarten age. Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers is a beautiful and poignant book about what it means to live here on earth, conveying universal themes of love, kindness, and the message that we’re all in this together. Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern – When an old man is bothered by the quiet noises in his old cottage (the faucet dripping, the wind whooshing) the village wise man tells him to bring a growing list of animals into his house. The cottage becomes so noisy the old man sends the animals outside and suddenly appreciates the soft, relaxing, quiet sounds of his old house. The repetitive text and silly animal sounds, remind us to be thankful for what we have.
