didn’t think I needed me-time. I
I thought I led a pretty balanced life. I
have two children at home and work
full-time, but we live in a country
setting and the people around me are
the best.
A girls’ weekend away has made
me think differently.
Four of us fled the city for an alpine
retreat. There we spent three days,
soaking up the sun, walking amongst
the spectacular scenery, and dipping
in and out of the sauna, chatting
constantly. We ate coconut yoghurt
with fresh fruit, goats’ cheese and
spinach lasange and green smoothies
packed with spirulina – with a bit of
gin to keep it all in balance.
My spirits soared. There were so
many moments, where I thought, “I
haven’t felt this good in ages.”
Bringing together this issue of Style
sees us mix together sustainability,
health and wellbeing, to deliver a truly
wholesome offering. I hope it makes
you think – about yourself.
When was the last time you had a
real break and took the opportunity
to reset the clock? As we start
slipping down the slippery festive
slope to Christmas, now’s a good
time to recharge the mind.
Breathe in. Breathe out. Take a
moment, with Style.
Mummy Mugs
GO GREEN
Elle + Riley
Those in Queenstown have been pining for a little
cashmere luxury for long enough to make Elle + Riley
move south. The cashmere brand has been making
its way down country, starting in Auckland, then
Christchurch and now lands at 23 Beach Street.
With 85 per cent of the clothes on the shelves at the
new shop Lordship Linens boasting the ‘made in New
Zealand’ mark, a trip to North Canterbury is calling.
The business that started at the Ohoka Farmers’ Market
has now set up shop at 130 High Street, Rangiora, with
ethical linen, silk and cotton leading the way.
SUPPORT OTHERS
A group of Sumner mums have joined forces with
pottery guru Tatyanna Meharry to produce Mummy Mugs
(mummymugs.com), a collection of ceramic mugs from
local sand. Behind the collab is a mission to encourage
mothers to take five minutes out to enjoy a cuppa.
Proceeds from the handcrafted beauties will go to Plunket,
to support mothers dealing with post-natal depression.
Get in the Christmas spirit with the Zonta Christmas
House Tour on 24 November. Seven Christchurch
homes open their doors for the event, from which funds
go to Walsh House, PADA NZ (Perinatal Anxiety and
Depression Aotearoa) and Zonta International Projects.
Tickets include post-event drinks and nibbles at The
Christmas Hut.
The Good Pet Home The Gift Curator Pottery Barn Kids at Ballantynes
SHOP
Luxury leather goods brand Common People has made
itself at home in Wanaka’s town centre. Previously
operating a pop-up at Queenstown Airport, 18 Dunmore
Street is now the place to find New Zealand-made leather
bags, sterling silver jewellery, scarves and more.
The stress of Christmas shopping is coming – in fact,
haven’t you started yet? Christchurch’s Jenny Collins is all
about the gift box, creating collections of carefully curated
luxury products for her new online business The Gift
Curator (thegiftcurator.co.nz). Complete with handwritten
notes, her gift boxes are ideal for the time-pressed who
are less than impressed by an impersonal hamper.
If you have a fur baby in need of treating, there’s a
new online store making it easy. The Good Pet Home
(thegoodpethome.com) is for the discerning pet owner, be
it cat or dog, and is where you’ll find the likes of unisex pet
parfum, organic shampoo and toys that will go the distance.
Off the back of its successful Westfield Riccarton and CBD
offerings comes The Cosmetic Clinic’s third Christchurch
location. Opening at the Hornby Hub towards the end of
November, it’s your go-to for laser hair removal, cosmetic
injectables and other skincare treatments under the care of
qualified clinicians.
Ballantynes is celebrating the completion of a grand
expansion that sees it even better than it was pre-quake.
Check out the three-storey atrium (where old meets new)
that, at street level, homes Kin (a café/deli/wine bar) and,
on Level 1 facing Lichfield Street, the three new concept
stores of Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids and West Elm.
General Pants Co. has arrived in New Zealand, opening
in both Auckland and Christchurch (88 Cashel Street) with
hip-high denim from the likes of Neuw, Stussy and Lee
among shelves stacked with streetwear; the first of many
stores the Australian fashion retailer plans for our shores.
ENJOY VILLAGE LIFE
MOVE THE MIND
The connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing
goes deeper than endorphins, and those in the business of getting
us moving are making sure we know about it.
Words Christine de Felice
Exercise, such as
9Round circuit
training, is a very
effective antidepressant.
Turn to any news media platform,
on any day, and a topic that is
likely to be mentioned now is mental
health. Internationally, it has become a
significant health issue, with the World
Health Organisation determining that by
next year depression will be the secondleading
cause of disability in the world.
Prince William was reported as
raising the issue during his recent
visit to Pakistan with the Duchess of
Cambridge, while just last month our
Government announced a $6-million
funding boost for mental health
services at 22 general practices around
the country.
Mental health conditions such as
depression and anxiety are not isolated
conditions, however – the connection
between mental and physical health
and wellbeing is widely recognised,
not only by health professionals, but
also by practitioners in the exercise
and wellness industries. Offering a
range of programmes and facilities,
these practitioners say if people take
advantage of them they can improve
both their physical and mental health,
leading to happier, more fulfilled lives.
Owner/operators of three 9Round
franchises in Christchurch, Paige and
Ellis Powerman, believe 90 per cent
of people that go to the gym do so
because they are feeling down, and are
unhappy with their physical fitness. For
many, the hope is to lose weight by
going to the gym, as they think that will
make them feel happy, Paige says.
“But losing weight has got nothing
to do with being happy,” she says. “It’s
the sense of empowerment people get
from learning new skills and letting go
Wayne Armour
gives specialised
massage therapy
to a client.
of stress that produces that feeling of
happiness and wellbeing. Rather than
focusing on the weight loss, their focus
needs to be on being happy, on how
they feel.”
She adds: “Exercise is the best form
of anti-depressant you can have.”
Several times a year 9Round runs
six-week challenges, which take a
holistic approach to weight loss,
combining mental, social, physical and
spiritual aspects.
“The challenge is not about losing
weight, it’s about changing behaviour
to get people back on track. The goal
is to change people’s mental state,”
Paige says.
Both women say that unfortunately
there is a stigma around six-week
challenges, which they are keen
to dispel.
“We also share challenges we have
had in our lives,” Ellis says, “and that
helps people’s confidence, knowing
that, even though we are their trainers,
we have faced challenges too.”
Body mechanic Wayne Armour,
who owns and runs NZBMA with his
mother Dawn Armour, a remedial
specialist, and partner Danual
Cattermoul, a stretching specialist,
says people get into exercise for two
reasons – to lose weight, or to escape.
“Often, it’s a coping strategy when
they are experiencing stress in their
life,” Wayne says, “and a core benefit
of exercise is the relief of mental
tension. The endorphins, or ‘happy
hormones’ that are released by the
body following exercise produce
a natural ‘high’, relieving stress and
anxiety. It becomes addictive.”
We all know that sinking feeling
in the pit of our stomach when we
are worried about something. As
Wayne explains, that is because
our abdominal muscle (iliopsoas)
is connected to our emotions. If
the situation is ongoing, having a
specialised massage treatment will
release tension in the abdominal
muscles and consequently the feelings
of stress and anxiety will be relieved,
he says.
In situations of extreme stress or
trauma, a person will often adopt
the foetal position to protect the
vulnerable abdominal region,
Wayne says.
Someone who is feeling stress
or anxiety will often talk about it
with their therapist, which Wayne
says is also an important aspect of
their treatment.
He also notes that anxiety can cause
a person to hunch their shoulders
creating tension in the neck muscles.
“When this happens, you need to
change your position and relax your
shoulders as the tension can also
affect the alignment of other muscles,”
Wayne says.
“We believe it’s about people being
educated on how they can improve
both their physical and mental health.
It’s said that knowledge is power. But
it’s what you do with that knowledge
that’s the real power.”
22 STYLE | wellbeing
There are other ways of relieving
mental stress, which don’t involve as
much physical exertion but can be
equally effective – for example, yoga,
meditation, massage, flotation therapy,
ice bath and sauna hot and cold
therapy, all of which are being offered
at a new wellness space about to
open in The Welder on Welles Street
in Christchurch.
“For people experiencing emotional
difficulties, such as with relationships,
natural practices like yoga and
meditation can be very effective,”
says Sam Thomas, a co-founder of
O-Studio with professional rugby
player Tim Bateman and yoga teacher
Jess Smith.
“There has been a lot of research
on how these practices can help in
deeper ways,” Sam says.
“Practising sustained focus on
the breath for just 20 minutes in
meditation can help us be more
present with our children or at work.”
This task aims to increase
mindfulness, a concept that has
garnered a lot of attention of late.
However, as Sam points out, it is just
one of a range of meditative practices
used in research to boost other
important qualities like self-confidence
and resilience to help people better
deal with situations in their lives.
The effectiveness of yoga in
improving mental wellbeing and
enhancing self-esteem has been
shown through extensive research,
and it has been used in wellness
programmes around the world for
many years.
Sam describes yoga as being about
“moving your body to change
your mind”.
“Yoga teaches people to become
aware of what’s happening in their
body, leading to better reactions to
changes in mood that commonly
occur throughout the day.”
Flotation therapy, developed at
the US National Institute of Mental
Health in 1954, has experienced a
surge in popularity in recent years
as a stress relief tool. After trying
flotation therapy overseas, Tim and his
wife Laura set up Christchurch’s first
flotation therapy centre, Cloud 9 Float
Club, in 2015.
“Research indicates that flotation
is among the top 25 per cent
of relaxation tools known to
psychology,” Sam says, “and it is now
being used to combat burnout, stress
and anxiety disorders.
Mental health and
wellbeing can be
enhanced through
practising yoga
and meditation,
as such places as
O-Studio.
“Because sensory input is reduced
to a minimum, the body quickly
recognises that you are free of
environmental threats, which helps
you to fall into a deep state of
relaxation.”
Each flotation pod is about the size
of a small car and the water contains
a quantity of Epsom salts, making it
buoyant enough for the participant to
float, he says.
Stress, anxiety, burnout, low selfesteem
– these can affect us all at
different times in our life, but the tools
to overcome them are readily available.
In the words of Sam: “There are
many pathways to improving mental
wellbeing through physical activity, and
they can all build up reward pathways
– pathways to becoming the best you
can be.”
And the first step is starting that
journey – for your body and your mind.
A PLANET-FRIENDLY
BUSINESS MODEL
There is an increasing number of businesses making their mark on the world by
ensuring the only things they leave behind them are (carbon-free) footprints.
Words Amy Barry

26 STYLE | report
Archie gets a dose of
Ethique’s Bow Wow Bar
shampoo. Tested on
humans, naturally.
It’s everywhere... what we should be doing to save the
planet. We’ve changed our behaviours from taking home
plastic supermarket bags to bringing our own reusable ones
and now brands all around us are firing us information on
how to shop and the benefits of their products over other
planet-wrecking alternatives. It’s a minefield.
Once upon a time, we were sold on the aesthetically
pleasing packaging. Now we find ourselves standing in
supermarket aisles, scanning the checklists to see whether
it’s: recyclable, sustainable, eco-friendly; where it has come
from, the size of its carbon footprint, how it supports local;
and if it’s cruelty-free or palm oil-free... The list can be quite
overwhelming and can raise further questions.
Two terms that tend to be used interchangeably in
the vegan cosmetic world mean very different things.
‘Vegan’ products do not contain any animal products or
animal-derived ingredients; while ‘cruelty-free’ means the
component ingredients and final product have not been
tested on animals. And ‘sustainable’ palm oil use still poses
problematic consequences to the endangered orangutan
population (reading some of the associated stories is quite
the eye-opener – and a tear-jerker).
Annamaria Berta, founder and creator of Christchurchmade
Panna Soaps, explains that ‘100 per cent vegan’ sees no
animal products involved in any part of the item’s production,
either in the product itself or those produced in the same
environment. Her vegan soaps also proudly present that
recognisable little bunny symbol on their packaging, which
is recyclable and locally made to help support Christchurch
businesses and avoid that inflated carbon footprint. There’s a
whole lot of change happening in the cosmetic world.
The well-known and multi-award-winning founder of
beauty brand Ethique, Brianne West, had an early mission
to “start a company that had a purpose beyond profit – to
align my desire to do business with my desire to do good”.
Brianne, a University of Canterbury science graduate with
ambitious flare, has continued to spread the word to
conscientious consumers worldwide. The latest campaign
sees a limited-edition solid shampoo and conditioner range
(Wombar and Kookabar) donating funds to The Irwins’
Wildlife Warriors foundation, through a collaboration with
Bindi Irwin. It’s a triple whammy as we avoid palm oil use,
plastic waste and support conservation in one fell swoop.
Companies around the globe have started developing
creative solutions so we can all do our bit, often taking us
on their brand journey of how to get there ‘together’. We
feel we need to jump on board, as brand imagery draws us
in, shaming us for carrying around a plastic water bottle or
offering a plastic straw at a children’s party.
Already, merino wool has been taken to new levels thanks
to such brilliant innovators as those behind Icebreaker,
Allbirds and Firewire Surfboards (which swapped fibreglass
for wool fibre), but it doesn’t stop there. The New Zealand
Merino Company launched a competition with Idealog that
challenged Kiwis to discover the potential of strong-wool
– the hardy wool most often used in carpets. The initiative
prompted investigation into all manner of things, from
insulated beehive covers to nappies, the finalists’ proposals
impressive. However the grand prize went to Becs Bartells
for her strong-wool coffins, which will be developed further
at Studio ZQ (NZ Merino Company’s new innovation space
in Christchurch).

If you forget your own cup,
Air New Zealand now serves
hot drinks in compostable ones.
Other businesses are churning out the
horrifying facts and figures around plastic
use and offering us products to help
eliminate the impact this is having on our
environment. It’s clear being ‘green’ is not an
aspiration but an action.
Air New Zealand, already known for its
commitment to sustainable practices, is
encouraging passengers to put their reusable
cups in their carry-on. Though, if you forget,
the onboard hot drink cups are now made
from plants not plastic, designed to then be
composted at one of the five ports across
the country, with their waste management
provider looking into more locations. It’s the
first phase of its plastic-reduction strategy,
which has already seen 55-million single-use
plastic items replaced with lower-impact
alternatives across the airline’s global
network, including on the ground, in lounges
and work spaces.

28 STYLE | report
Wool growers and marketers are actively looking for innovative ways
for their renewable fibre to replace synthetics, like strong-wool coffins.
It seems companies that champion environmental or
social issues are going from strength to strength in the eye
of the consumer as Kiwis are highly committed to living
sustainable lives through their purchasing decisions. From
shampoo and shaving bars to plant-based eateries, we are
turning into sustainable thinkers.
Christchurch is embracing the newly opened Welder,
a complex with upcycling at the centre of the design and
development. Inside the repurposed character buildings,
find businesses such as Good For, a packaging-free grocery
store. There, you are encouraged to bring your own
reusable packaging or use paper bags provided, for free.
Meanwhile, schools are going plastic wrap-free and
entrepreneurs like 16-year-old Taupo student, Brooke
Moore, are developing products to overtake household
staples. Brooke has developed an edible and biodegradable
agar-based alternative to plastic food wrap – called Wrapt,
and it comes in three flavours. Currently preparing to
present to Glad Wrap and having won a 2019 Girlboss
Award for innovation, she’s now aiming to pitch to
companies whose product hers aims to displace.
It’s clear we are all on this path together as we seek out
eco-friendly, ethical and sustainable production. Could New
Zealand follow in the footsteps of San Francisco Airport
and go plastic-free? Will more countries follow China’s
initiative to ‘green-up’ deserts, laying grids to forest the
sands? Watch this space. One thing’s for sure, I’m on this
better-for-you, better-for-our-planet train, and with so
much choice, why wouldn’t we be?
From shampoo and shaving bars
to plant-based eateries, we are
turning into sustainable thinkers.
The Big
Trend of
Going Small
One size and one shape definitely does
not fit all. One weekend recently, I
had the pleasure of joining a tour of
architectural homes which championed
the principles of energy awareness
and conservation, amongst other
things. Style over size was evident
amongst all the individual and specific
architectural signatures, as was the
variation of spatial configurations,
and this has caused me to reflect on
the increasing popularity of smaller
properties and the acceptance of
different ways of doing things.
Firstly, size. Not small, as in ‘let’s fit your entire
life into a caravan’, but small as in compact,
thoughtful and clever, is enjoying an increase in
popularity throughout our region. The restraint
required to ‘live smaller’ would be too much for
me and it’s no secret that I have a maximalist
rather than a minimalist approach, but I can
definitely appreciate why this trend is gaining
momentum nationally and internationally.
Millennials wanting a chance to get onto the
property ladder are considering alternatives
to the types of properties their parents might
have started with, and size features strongly
in this equation, whilst retirees are wanting to
turn things on their head and look to a similar
lifestyle and property, but smaller, having been
there and done that.
One of the reasons for considering a smaller
dwelling is obvious: energy efficiency. A
smaller house should be easier to heat, and this
flows directly on to a reduced cost. A smaller
ecological footprint, helping both your pocket
and our planet. Solar-powered options feature,
as do passive heating methods based around
a house’s orientation and construction. Excess
materials, color choices and furniture are all
pared back, and clever storage options become
all-important.
The other notable element in choosing to live
like this is that your community and your city
surroundings take on a whole new meaning, and
with ‘intimate’ (my word for ‘tiny’!) garden spaces,
you can see the merit in this. The park next-door
acts as your garden and the city, your backyard –
and potentially a scooter replaces your car.
For me, it seems like the easiest time to make
a decision to commit to this lifestyle would be
when you first start out and don’t have much
or later when you have so much that you think,
‘I now want less’. That middle period with kids,
cars, bikes and all the other stuff that comes
with life would make it too hard for some, but
as the tour I’ve referred to has taught me, not
everyone feels this way. Therein lies the beauty
of the times we live in and the choices we have.
One size certainly doesn’t fit all – nor is it
expected too – and it just so happens that
there are architects, builders, developers and
designers thinking the same way. It makes for an
engaging and interesting era.
THINK BIG,
BUILD SMALL
How much space we need in which to live our lives is coming under
scrutiny as we consider the impact that extra living room and
spare bedroom is having on more than just our mortgage.
Words Richard Dalman

34 STYLE | architecture
Haus Café takes up a mere three
car parks on Moorhouse Avenue,
Christchurch.
Image: Jane Armstrong
The offices we design now feature smaller individual
work areas and larger communal spaces.
There has been much talk about a trend
towards smaller houses recently. This has
been in response to a combination of smaller
section sizes, increased construction and land
costs, changing planning regulations and a
desire to reduce our carbon footprint.
There is currently a similar trend happening
in the commercial world, for the same
reasons as above, and also, because the way
we work is changing. The offices we design
now feature smaller individual work areas and
larger communal spaces. Open-plan offices
and hot desking have become common.
If we build smaller, we fit more in, use
less materials and have less waste and
unnecessary space. Construction times can be
sped up and consenting can become easier.
A great example of this was the container
mall (Re:Start) in Christchurch that sprang up
soon after the Christchurch earthquakes.
But building small requires a very carefully
considered design. Below are a few tricks to
designing smaller than the norm:
1. Your building must be well planned.
Try to reduce corridor space and keep
things simple.
2. Think about what your priorities are and
focus on what’s important – leave out
the unnecessary stuff.
3. Keep colours and finishes light and spaces
well lit to make them seem larger.
4. Bring the outdoors in – try to break
down the barriers to the outside and
‘borrow’ outdoor space that costs less
than indoor space.
5. Use clever ‘hideaway’ design techniques
such as those that have featured in boats
and caravans for decades.

STYLE | architecture 35
One of Dalman Architects’
recent projects that
incorporates all of the above
is Haus Café on Moorhouse
Avenue. This simple coffee
kiosk takes up only three car
parks in the Moorhouse City
retail complex car park.
The brief was for a small
building with a spacious
feel that is self-sufficient
and could be relocated.
The building has 32m² of
internal space and utilises
the walkway between the
car parks as an outdoor
sitting area. It includes a full
prep kitchen, storage space,
servery and customer seating
– and it only took eight
weeks to build and fit out!
36 STYLE | architecture
Think your house is narrow? Yuua Architects turned a 2.5m-wide alleyway into a four-storey, 1.8m-wide house in Tokyo.
In many central city areas, land prices have become
so high that ‘waste’ spaces not previously considered
suitable for building are now being utilised as small
building sites.
An example of this that really pushes the
boundaries – literally – is ‘The 1.8m House’ in Tokyo
by Yuua Architects. The architects have transformed a
1.8m wide x 11m long alley into a four-storey house.
The house features various levels that open into
each other allowing long views, easy connections and
flow-through ventilation. Natural light is available via
floor-to-ceiling windows at each end of the home, a
small central terrace and a large skylight above.
The architects wanted to achieve “a house with
playfulness where people and cats live happily”. With
little space and an abundance of creativity, they have
produced much more.
When building small, thinking big is still required.
Innovative ideas and clever design to fit as much
as possible into our shrinking sites and buildings
will provide the appropriate space for a successful
business or comfortable home.

ART FOR CLIMATE’S SAKE
Views on climate change are presented in thought-provoking ways and means thanks
to the sculptors participating at this year’s Sculpture on the Peninsula.
Words Ady Shannon
Talk of climate change is big news right now; while
Greta Thunberg is polarising heads of state at the
United Nations and world leaders are struggling to
implement policies to achieve lower carbon emission
targets, closer to home artists selected to participate in
the South Island’s largest sculpture exhibition are using
creative flair to make a climate statement.
Leah Fraser Henderson
WHEN THE RIVERS RUN DRY
Leah Fraser Henderson moved from Sydney to
Christchurch 25 years ago to enjoy the great outdoors.
She considers the changes to our environment and
degradation to our water and waterways since her
arrival “shocking”.
Her large-scale circular sculpture represents braided
waterways and the multi-layered complex problems
surrounding the state of our rivers.
“The shadows that it creates are the memories of the
people who can recall what the rivers once looked like.
Ignoring what is going on at the deeper levels won’t fix
it for our children’s futures. We take too much water
out of the ground for intensive dairy farming. How can
we imagine that is not affecting the water that is left?
We have to add chlorine to make it safe to drink!
“Drive around Canterbury and look at all the bridges
spanning stones. Rivers are disappearing in our lifetimes.
We will all be left with nothing but empty channels that
were carved out by our rivers, once teeming with life.”
When The Rivers Run Dry in process.
Hannah Kidd
THE WATCHMEN
On a lush green paddock on Sculpture on the Peninsula’s
Loudon Farm location three tall tin sentinels look out over
the rural landscape. The Watchmen are Hannah Kidd’s latest
works and with each character standing between three and
five metres tall, their presence is imposing and impressive. It
is the first time Hannah has completed and installed her work
well ahead of schedule. “Usually I am struggling to finish but I
wanted these guys to feel grounded, like historic people who
have been watching over the land for a long time.”
The inspiration for one recycled grain silo and two diesel
tanks to take on the features of a solemn watcher came from
the Easter Island towering stone statues known as moai. The
island’s once thriving and industrious culture was destroyed
by deforestation and Hannah has used this as an analogy for
global warming and what can happen when “you gobble up
resources and don’t protect a way of life”.
“The Watchmen are positive icons, solemn thinkers,
pondering on the environment and the fact they are no longer
useful given the scale on which we are now producing.”

BURNING TIME
Nelson-based artists Vicki Smith and Anthony Genet
are combining their talents in a collaborative work
call Burning Time. Vicki has a long interest in old and
new technologies, specifically around navigation, and
Anthony has a history of working with glass and neon.
Their installation is a heliographic instrument, styled on
the Victorian meteorological machine, the Campbell-
Stokes recorder. An optical glass orb mounted on a
brass stand will be placed on the crest of a hill where
the brass and glass will glint in the sunlight, recording
sunlight hours on a light-sensitive cardboard strip.
“These instruments are still in use in weather
stations around Aotearoa, although increasingly
being replaced with digital recorders. Our machine is
created from recycled brass and copper and bits of
an old boat. A light-sensitive cardboard strip records
a daily transcript of sunshine hours collected through
the focusing effect of a blown optical glass orb.
“We understand, from historic records, that we
are now in pivotal times for acting for our continued
existence. We invite viewers to consider their actions
in our changing climatic times.”
Graham Bennett
POLLUTED INHERITANCE – A
PORTRAIT OF FIVE LAKES
Graham Bennett has been exhibiting and selling sculptures
for more than five decades. His Sculpture on the Peninsula
contribution this year is based on a motif from a 500-yearold
triptych by Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch known as
The Garden of Earthly Delights. The central panel of the oil
depicts surreal elements linked by a network of waterways.
A group of young women, standing knee-deep in a pond,
are surrounded by symbols of corruption and greed.
Graham collected water from five polluted lakes – Te
Waihora (Lake Ellesmere), Waikare, Whangape, Waiwera
and Rotorua – and has created
five vessels on plinths to
represent each one.
“My work has the vulnerable
group standing in five
hemispheres, each filled with
polluted water. I have replaced
seven spoonbills on the heads
of the figures in the original
artwork with bitterns (matuku),
an endangered wading bird
found near Te Waihora. The
green rim on each bowl evokes
the circles of irrigation that
contribute to the degradation
of our waterways, and
challenges our ‘100 per cent
pure’ halo. A jar containing lake
water is fixed to the base of
each stand.”
The imagined end product of Burning Time and a
prototype construction of its top section.
These and many other works
will be available for sale at
LOOKING
FORWARD
Real Estate is a dynamic and engaging industry
that ultimately centres around people.
With the expendable
society of today, people
wanting to further themselves
often look to a career in real
estate to tap into their true
potential. It is an effective
way of curating the lifestyle
you desire.
Personally, I started my career working
with Land and Deeds. Then, more than
three decades ago, I decided to make
the shift to real estate - an industry which
I continue to be passionate about to this day.
Real estate rewards those who work
hard and are committed to going the
extra mile. If you put in the work, you’ll
see big returns, with flexibility and earning
potential that eclipses that of a regular
9-5 role. It’s a dynamic and engaging
industry that ultimately centres around
people. If you’re driven by a passion for
your job and you love what you do,
then the sky truly is the limit.
Australasian real estate coach, Tom Panos,
identified that hard work alone does not
always make for a top performing agent.
However, if you combine your dedication
with organisation and tenacity, he believes
you have a recipe for success.
There really are no hard and fast rules
about who can build an extraordinary
career in real estate. Life experience,
communication skills, and a positive
attitude all go a long way in this industry.
In fact, many top-performing agents
started out in completely different sectors
– from retail and hospitality to farming,
construction, education, and everything
in between! But they all have something
in common – a relentless commitment
to service.
Delivering outstanding service is the only
way to build your reputation in real estate.
This comes down to empathy, honesty and
authenticity. It means being reliable, always
following through, and having a genuine
desire to put people first. Regardless
of the news to be delivered, vendors
need to be kept in the loop, so effective
communication skills are a must.
I find that a lot of people who come
to real estate later in life end up wishing
they’d started earlier. So why wait?
Call me for a confidential chat to find
out how you can enter the wonderful,
and very rewarding, world of real estate.
Grass with class
Making sure the grass is always
greener on your side of the fence!
As the weather warms up and
you begin to head outdoors, you
may notice your lawn is looking
tired after the winter months.
Whether it’s a new lawn you decide you are
after or bringing your existing lawn back
to life, the team at Oderings Landscaping
have the knowledge and skills to create
a lush lawn that your neighbours will envy.
Preparation starts as part of the
consultation process where Oderings
Landscaping will gain an understanding
of what kind of use the lawn area will be
getting. Do you want the lawn to be a show
piece? Is it for backyard cricket with the
kids? Or will there be pets using the area?
Other considerations include the
surrounding environment, is it shady
or surrounded by tree roots. Based on
this information we can recommend
a lawn that will be fit for purpose.
Options for lawns include hand sown,
hydro seed, instant lawn and artificial.
Hand Sown Lawn – Although this is the
most economical way to build a lawn, it
will take longer and require more care to
get growing. Rest assured you can still
have a beautiful, well developed lawn;
you just need to be prepared to invest
some time. The type of lawn seed used
will depend on your lawn’s environment.
Hydro Seed Lawn – The most popular
way of installing a new lawn, due to its
quick growth and cost effectiveness.
Hydroseeding is the process of
spraying on a mixture of water, seed,
fertiliser and mulch. This means your
lawn will have a kick start of nutrients
and moisture to get it growing.
Instant Lawn – An excellent option
for those wanting quick results and an
immediate showpiece. Benefits of this
option include the lawn already being
around a year old and well established
when it arrives. Your new instant lawn
will also come weed free, having been
thoroughly treated for weeds, pests,
and diseases.
Artificial Lawn – Artificial lawns are so
lifelike it’s hard to tell you don’t have the
real thing. A pricey yet appealing option.
Despite a significant financial outlay, the
benefits are huge. There is no mowing,
feeding or spraying required. This is an
option worth considering for those with
little time for garden maintenance, but
still wanting the look of a lush lawn.
lawn back to life get in touch today to
There’s no doubt about it, building is
aspirations of how you want to live in
the space. They will assess how the
house is oriented to neighbouring
structures and to the sun, where
privacy is required, and discuss the
aesthetic you’d like (formal, coastal,
native, rustic..) and the colours,
textures, contrasts, plants and
materials to achieve that look.
Once you’ve decided on the
landscape designer who will deliver the
outdoor living area of your dreams,
they will prepare a ‘scope of works’
and ‘fee proposal’. This will outline the
design objectives discussed and fees for
both a ‘concept landscape design’ and
a ‘planting plan’. The latter is usually
optional but worth the extra investment
for professional advice on which plants
will best suit your site’s environmental
aspects (even if you plant them
yourself). The planting plan will detail
the location, species and quantities of
trees, shrubs, ground covers and hedges.
Prepare to invest a few thousand
dollars to get to the point where
your site has been measured and a
comprehensive site plan is prepared
and presented importing your
architectural plans into the proposed
landscape design. An effective ‘design
plan’ will come up with functional
solutions and specify the materials for
hard landscaping features like paths,
driveway, decking, paving and edging
as well as fun features like a pizza
oven or fireplace, hot tub or pool and
built-in seating around a fire pit. A
comprehensive plan will also detail the
recommended planting and lawn areas,
your soft landscaping (features that do
not involve construction).
Once you’ve signed off on the design,
work proceeds to the construction
phase and your landscape architect
will prepare quotes for both hard and
soft landscaping elements. Some will
design and construct in-house, others
will outsource to sub-contractors.
Your landscape architect will handle
any consent applications and oversee
construction.
As hard and soft landscaping come
together, your vision grows into reality.
Be patient as, depending on the season,
it might be a while before your chosen
plantings thrive. Rest assured, guided
by expert design, a good landscape
plan will have you enjoying your great
outdoors in no time.
Five tips for greener landscaping
1. Recycle or upcycle unused building materials; turn hardwood
sleepers into garden bed walls, chunky steps or seating, and steel
reinforcing mesh into a metal climbing frame for plants.
2. Multitask with seating that doubles as wood storage or gabion
retaining walls for garden beds.
3. Go organic with weedmats and natural remedies, rather than
Roundup, to control pests and weeds and attract bees and native
birds; factor in a compost bin to feed and enrich your soil rather
than using synthetic fertilisers.
4. Be waterwise using seaweed or moss mulch to reduce water
evaporation; upgrade your leaky hose and install a rainwater
tank to capture water; choose natives or succulents for your soft
landscaping; select permeable surfaces (pebbles not pavers) for
hard landscaping.
5. Grow your own with an edible garden in your design.
REJUVENATE
Craig Wilson shines the light on the dreary parts of our outdoor
STYLE | landscaping 47
As the season moves into the warmer summer
months, life moves outdoors. On a still day,
the French doors are open from dawn to dusk
and the garden beckons us out to enjoy our open
lawns or sit under our favourite tree.
Have your garden spaces become a bit
tired? It’s time to lift the look and increase your
enjoyment of your time outside. Here are four
tips to motivate a quick refresh at your place.
1. REPLACE ANYTHING
DEAD OR STRUGGLING
Cast your eyes over the area in which you spend
the most time and see if there’s anything past its
use-by date. Look for anything dead and twiggy
that hasn’t come away in spring and replace it
with a lush, fresh new specimen. Your local garden
centre will have plenty of good choices that will
see either flowers, foliage or both add a bit of ‘fizz’
to any corner of your property.
Home air conditioning?
Leave it to your smartpHone
(Is there anything they can’t do?)
With your Fujitsu e3 Heat Pump
system linked by WiFi to the FGLair
48 STYLE | landscaping
Make sure features
have good scale and
aren’t too small for
the space. Err on
the larger size if
you’re unsure.
2. ADD A NEW FEATURE
See where you can create a new highlight
in the garden to draw your eye and
create a stir. This could be a new urn or
glazed pot in tones that connect to a key
interior colour. Make sure it has good
scale and isn’t too small for the space. Err
on the bigger size if you’re unsure.
3. LIGHT IT UP
Garden and outdoor lighting can have a
huge impact on outdoor living. It’s time
to install that lighting you’ve always talked
about. It could be an uplight at the base
of a tree or sculpture, or a hidden LED
strip light under a built-in seat.
4. GIVE IT SOME LOVE
If the deck hasn’t had any love for a season or
two, it will be looking a bit worse for wear. A
fresh coat or two of a quality oil after a bit of
prepwork will do it wonders. While you’re at
it, any hardwood furniture will respond well
to the same treatment. With a bit of time and
elbow grease, you’ll soon be sitting back and
enjoying a rejuvenated deck that looks almost
as good as the day it went down.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
with Tim Goom
Spotlight on Talent:
2019 Young
Landscaper
of the Year!
by Goom
In the October edition of Style Magazine we were excited
to share with readers the success of Goom Landscapes at
the 2019 Registered Master Landscaper ‘Landscape of
Distinction’ awards.
A huge highlight of the awards for team Goom was when our very
own George Trower was named Young Landscaper of the Year from a
tough field of 9 finalists. His skills in terms of innovation, communication,
leadership, career development and construction pushed him to the front
of an extremely high calibre queue. With this national accolade under his
belt, we thought it timely to shed some light on what drives George in his
passion for landscaping:
What motivated you to become involved in the landscaping industry?
I grew up in the Waikato on a 40 hectare lifestyle property just out of
the small rural town of Matamata. Living on a farm surrounded by native
bush gave me a love for the environment and landscape. I gained a passion
for construction through growing up with my father owning a building
company which my grandfather started. These were the driving factors
to pursue a career in the landscape industry. I moved to Christchurch
to study at Lincoln University and graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of
Landscape Architecture with Honours, during which I approached Goom
Landscapes to complete the design based course requirements. Initially I
worked with the design team, then the construction team. 2 and half years
on I am a foreman.
What advice would you give to anyone considering a career
in landscaping?
It is a competitive industry with some very talented designers and
landscapers so you need to have an abiding passion and really want to be
there to do well. A love of the outdoors and design and an eye for detail
are vital. Remaining up to date with new methodologies is important, it is
an industry which embraces innovators.
What is important to you in your
own backyard?
I’m a fairly social creature, so my ultimate
backyard would have a lush expansive
lawn for backyard cricket contrasting with
a detailed hardscaped entertaining area
including a built in BBQ bench and bespoke
outdoor fire. Construction is in my blood
and I’m pretty busy, so low maintenance is
important to me, the soft-scaping and planting
would be kept to a minimum!
You work on both residential and commercial landscaping projects,
what are the challenges for these different types of project?
Whether it is a small residential project or a large commercial project,
the fundamentals are relatively consistent. The big difference is volume.
On a commercial project, everything is on a larger scale, it will have more
individual components to project manage and more deadlines along
the way.
What do you see as your next challenge in your landscaping career?
The next big challenge is competing in the Young Horticulturist of the
Year 2019 awards in mid-November, this is 2 day competition which pits
me against finalists from 5 other horticulture sectors. It’s a huge honour
so I’m pretty excited to be involved. I’m currently landscaping by day then
spending my evenings focussing on my preparations for this.
We are extremely proud of George’s much deserved Young Landscaper
of the Year 2019 award and wish him the very best of luck for his
next competition.
SET YOUR SIGHTS HIGH
Members of the Curtis family have been caring for South Island eyes for
120 years. We talk to Michael Curtis of Curtis Vision about business longevity
and seeing the future.
How long has the Curtis name been involved in optometry?
Since 1899, when Frank Curtis was practising as an
optometrist in Ashburton. We have an invoice from 1903
for a patient. Today, we operate in Fendalton, Wigram,
Christchurch CBD and New Brighton.
How has the business changed as the generations have
passed on the baton?
New technology has been championed and materials to
manufacture frames, lenses and contact lenses have
improved vastly.
To what do you attribute the business’s longevity?
The old family motto of ‘wish to do well’ has stood the
generations in good stead. This was why were once known
as Curtis Eye Care. We have always sought to deliver good
old-fashioned customer service and outstanding personal care
to patients with things to do with vision and eye care.
How do you stay current with both technology and trends?
We are members of all the eye-related societies, e.g. the
Contact Lens Association, NZ Association of Optometrists,
Association of Dispensing Optometrists NZ and Eyepro, and
we have embraced seminars and conferences as a way of
learning about new technology.
Can you tell us about your most memorable cases?
Examining a very well-off individual and then receiving a
request to update 30-plus sets of glasses he had distributed
in his homes and boats. A very successful day.
Also, finding a cancer in someone’s eye. Then, working
with that individual post removal of this eye and providing
eye care and support now for over 25 years. Very satisfying
for both parties.
What can we expect from the contact lens of tomorrow?
For most patients, it will likely be a daily-wear lens with a full
range of prescription options. It will be made of material that
has negligible impact on the tissues of the eye.
For distorted corneas and a select group of people, a
scan of the eye surface will provide a computer-generated
curvature for the contact lens to be made to. This will
provide a fresh, optically corrected, new corneal front surface
and give patients unsurpassed visual acuity.
RUNWAY
REALITY
Vanessa Ortynsky sat down with 24-year-old designer
Benjamin Alexander ahead of what was his solo debut at
New Zealand Fashion Week.

64 STYLE | fashion
A model walks the
runway during the
Benjamin Alexander
show during New
Zealand Fashion
Week 2019.
“It’s so important to us that
we respect our workers and
the people around us.”
– Benjamin Alexander
Congratulations on your first solo NZFW show!
What made you decide to show this year?
It was an easy decision. We [Benjamin, his sister
Alishia and friend Catherine] knew that we wanted
to launch the Benjamin Alexander brand and put on
a show this year. It was a good time to be part of
fashion week with so many new designers showing.
And it’s back at the Town Hall, where it all began.
Can you tell us a bit about the process of creating
your collection?
It was very honest and open. This collection is based
on moments in time and real experiences. It is
cohesive, but there are elements within it that remind
me of different parts of my life leading up until now.
It consists of 16 looks and 24 pieces and everything in
the collection is ours (shoes included).
What was your Project Runway experience like?
I genuinely loved the entire reality show experience
and I didn’t think that I would. I had never imagined I’d
be on a reality show. [Ben won New Zealand’s first
series of Project Runway in 2018.]
With sustainability being the theme at NZFW this
year, what does that mean to you as a designer?
Sustainability has always been second nature to us.
It’s not something that we’ve had to think about or
consider because it’s who we are. I come from a
sustainability masters programme [Whitecliffe Master
of Fine Arts in Fashion Sustainability]. It’s so important
to us that we respect our workers and the people
around us. It’s also about love and honesty and being
completely transparent about what you do. No one is
perfect, but we’re open to that conversation, willing to
change and move things forward.
How many collections do you plan to release per
year?
I think we’ll release twice a year, the collections aren’t
necessarily seasonal. The world is so global and our
customers travel, so it’s irrelevant to do winter coats
for winter.

Any career highlights so far?
The experience of building the business and the lead-up
to New Zealand Fashion Week in such a short amount
of time has been a highlight for us. We don’t have a
huge team, so we learnt and did everything on our own
merit. The past year itself has been a highlight and the
show will be the peak.
Did you enjoy working with Mi Piaci?
The collaboration with Mi Piaci has been straightforward,
seamless and an absolute dream. They understand what
I represent and I get what they represent. There are five
styles (with various colourways) in the collection.
Do you have any favourite spots in New Zealand?
I love the Coromandel. Every year, for 14 years, the
family would go to the Coromandel for two weeks over
the summer. My favourite beach in Auckland is definitely
What’s next for the brand?
There are two exciting things in the pipeline that we’re
everything’s currently under wraps.
CORPORATE SWAGGER
When it comes to uniforms, out the window goes one’s fashionforward
twist for a corporate, Westpac has partnered with Kiwi fashion
label Harman Grubisa to not only dress their employees in
style, but to give them personal choice. Thirty items form a new
Westpac wardrobe that includes cultural items, such as a hijab.
For fashion designers Madeleine Harman and Jessica Grubisa
In our ever more connected world, technology
Today, the unisex Levi’s Classic and Sherpa
power of Google. Jacquard by Google sees
smart technology sewn into the cuff by way of
the Jacquard Tag, which is smaller than a stick of
gum. This pairs with your phone so that set hand
movements over the cuff enable you to take a
photo, control music, answer and end calls, and
even receive an alert if you leave your phone at
FACE FIRST
The driving force behind Forme Spa – facial specialists for the past 17 years –
owner Hady Wenham explains the true value of this skincare treat.
How do you describe a facial to someone who hasn’t
had one before?
It offers all the relaxation benefits of a massage, with the
huge bonus of more radiant, glowing skin afterwards! Each
facial has different steps, including a thorough consultation
to make sure the beauty therapist understands what you
are wanting to achieve. Facials generally include a cleanse
and an exfoliation to remove the dull surface layer, and
usually a facial mask, application of a potent serum, and a
relaxing massage to ease jaw tension – we carry a lot of
stress in our faces! Depending on the length of the facial,
you should enjoy a foot/hand/scalp or shoulder massage
as well to really get you in the zen zone. You want to
feel blissfully relaxed, but also see a real improvement in
the hydration, smoothness and radiance of your skin after
your treatment.
What are some of the benefits from regular facials?
For many it is the pure escape of having undivided
attention given to their skin, but the tangible results
are addressing issues such as pigmentation, rosacea,
breakouts, dryness and dullness, fine lines and hydration.
Can one alone be effective?
Yes, you will see a difference after just one facial, but it’s
a bit like a gym workout, the more you do the better the
results. We recommend monthly maintenance facials, or
a course of facials, if you are trying to achieve something
specific.
Are facials treatments or treats?
They are a treatment, but if done well, they are also a
gorgeous treat as you feel so good afterwards. Everyone
comes to us for different reasons. For some it is just metime
and for others it is to address specific issues.
What are the most desirable ingredients to look for in
products involved in facial treatments?
It isn’t just about ingredients, as a product can contain
an ingredient but either not be in a stable base or be at
such a low percentage it is ineffective. It’s more about
choosing a spa that has brands with products with good
reputations that are effective. Once you’ve got that right,
vitamins A and C, peptides and lactic peels are all part of
a good regime.
DO THE FLOSS
Avoiding plastic isn’t easy if you look
to traditional ways of keeping your
teeth sparkling. Fortunately, Kiwi
brand Grin Natural is one company
looking at alternatives, and the latest
is dental flosses with handles made
from non-GMO cornstarch that are
biodegradable. The cardboard container
can be restacked with another 45 pack,
itself wrapped in eco-paper. Get the
next generation in on the act with the
kids packs that have a smaller floss
head and easy grip handles. Available in
supermarkets nationwide.
PACKAGING PLUS
In the beauty world, we tend to get
lumped with a lot of superfluous
packaging, but, fortunately, there
are several brands doing more
than just fixing their ingredients.
Floral Street is a British perfume
brand that presents its scents in
recyclable, biodegradable boxes.
The carton fits the bottle snugly
in a cocoon of sustainability. From
wet pulp to finished box takes just
one minute of manufacturing, with
waste water cleaned and recycled
and waste pulp composted at
local farms. What a great start to
smelling good. meccabeauty.co.nz

PURE HAIRCARE
This is a brand I fell in love
with long before ‘vegan’ was
such a buzzword. Pureology’s
story begins with a Californian
barber who sought to
develop a product his friend
with ovarian cancer could
use. Each bottle is not only
recyclable, but made of 50%
post-consumer recycled
material at that. Plus, the
formulas they’ve developed
mean you’re not using
handfuls of product at every
wash either – to which I can
attest. A little goes a long way
yet the results are top notch.
MEET THE TEAM
With The Cosmetic Clinic opening in the Hornby Hub – its third premises
in Christchurch, we thought it high time we introduced you to the
faces behind the brand.

STYLE | promotion 77
Rosa Guthrie
CO-OWNER OF THE CHRISTCHURCH
FRANCHISES
Where does The Cosmetic Clinic story
begin?
Having spent close to 15 years in the industry,
away from New Zealand, it always niggled
me that no one was offering these advanced
treatments, at affordable prices, in convenient
locations back here. Having decided it was
time to put down some roots on home soil,
I teamed up with my business partner to
launch The Cosmetic Clinic. Fast-forward just
over three years, there are nine clinics in the
network, with more openings on the cards in
the next few years.
What’s your favourite treatment?
My personal favourite is microneedling. We
use the Dermapen 4, which is an amazing tool.
We can treat almost all skin types, focusing on
a whole range of issues the client may have –
pigmentation, dull lacklustre skin, acne scarring,
open pores, etc. A course of treatments
makes any skin glow!
Caroline Holloway
CBD FRANCHISE CO-OWNER
What is your most popular treatment?
Most of my clients go for our ‘Ultimate Selfie’
or ‘Harmony’ package as they are such great
value. The former is the lips and crows’ feet
or frown line package, while Harmony is a full
refresh of lips, cheeks and anti-wrinkle. Often
the best results are achieved by little bits of
product spread across multiple areas on the
face, enhancing the whole face rather than
just focusing on highlighting one area.
How does a typical day play out for you?
With a toddler at home one tends to rise
and shine pretty early! I squeeze in an F45
workout before clinic, then it’s straight into
the day. My days are filled with clients, some
have been coming to see me for many years
and I get to meet lots of new faces too. I
really enjoy the clientele I have in the CBD
so my days fly by. From the consultation to
their first treatments, my aim is to help them
achieve subtle enhancements that make them
feel more naturally beautiful.
Caroline Holloway.
Grace Breckell
HORNBY FRANCHISE CO-OWNER
How long have you been involved in the
beauty industry?
I have been involved and performed a vast
range of services in the beauty industry for
nine years. I have occupied both management
and operational roles with a clear focus in
delivering a service underpinned by care,
diligence and understanding. I am very excited
to be taking the next step in my career to
finally be a business owner.
What are you most looking forward to with
this new venture?
I am looking forward to being part of a
reputable brand that places great emphasis
in delivering affordable solutions to cosmetic
care. It has been a life-long ambition to be a
business owner, in particular, a business owner
in a client-centric industry. I cannot wait to be
leading my team and creating a fantastic work
environment that not only my team will enjoy
but our clients will too.
Sharon Sutherland
CBD FRANCHISE CO-OWNER
What is one of your favourite success
stories?
Over the years I have taught many upand-coming
passionate therapists how to
communicate, create appropriate treatment
plans and to prescribe skin care that is
personalised for each individual client. The
most heartwarming feedback I could possibly
get from these wonderful therapists is when
I speak to them now, in many cases 15 to
20 years later and they say, ‘You helped me
become the success I am today with your
knowledge and passion for the industry.’
What’s on your personal beauty bucket list?
To visit spas and experience different
treatments in as many countries as possible.
LET IT GLOW
If you want your skin to look its best, say goodbye to
stress and start looking after yourself.
Words Clemency Alice

STYLE | beauty 79
Your skin reflects both your emotional and
physical health. It’s a true reflection of
our inner wellbeing.
Certain skin conditions can arise from
lifestyle-related choices – in other words,
how you approach your diet, stress, exercise
and sleep can make itself known on your
skin. Making conscious, positive lifestyle
changes and committing to these can help
reduce or even eliminate the negative effects.
With regular exercise, sleep, less stress and
nutritional food choices, your skin’s natural
radiance and beauty can shine through.
However, sometimes life removes the
ability to make the right choices. Disrupted
sleep patterns are the norm for mothers
with newborn babies; unforeseen events
and illnesses are unavoidable stressors.
Nevertheless, if we consciously start doing
the best we can to alter our patterns, we will
feel at least some sort of improvement and
allow our skin to be the best it can be.
With regular exercise, sleep, less
stress and nutritional food choices,
Botanical essences can help ease the effects of
daily stressors and help us return balance to our lives.
Therapie Roques’O’Neil encompasses an exquisite
aromatherapeutic collection of products that can be
used to introduce nurturing rituals that harmonise the
mind while providing immediate benefits to the skin.
Their Equilibrium Bath and Shower Essence is a serene
blend of Fragonia and English lavender that will help you
navigate the most chaotic of daily challenges. This can
be used in the shower, before a big day, or in the bath
to help you unwind at the end of the day. Leave on the
skin as a nourishing, perfumed moisturiser.
Antioxidants are a key part of maintaining optimal
skin health. They are a tool to protect our bodies and
skin from oxidative damage and stress. Try introducing
sencha green tea to your daily tea practice. Drinking
green tea helps protect your skin from transepidermal
water loss (TWL) and has numerous health and skin
benefits. There’s also a supplement known as Enzogenol,
which is made in New Zealand from 100% natural pine
bark extract. Skin cell studies have demonstrated that
pine bark stimulates skincell growth, protects the skin
cells from external free-radical damage, and recharges
the skin cells’ natural defences.
Here in New Zealand, we know how important it
is to protect our skin from the sun. With increased
exposure during these spring and summer months, an
SPF product is crucial for whenever you are outside.
Sun-protecting beauty products will be one of the
biggest skincare investments you will make. La Mer
offers a luxurious, lightweight SPF fluid to defend your
skin against UV rays. Their broad spectrum SPF 50 UV
Protecting Fluid can be applied over your moisturiser or
under your makeup, leaving your skin feeling hydrated,
protected and soothed.
When you are overtired and exhausted, your skin
can become more sensitive. Aim for a consistent eight
hours’ sleep per night and allow space for power naps
during the weekends and your days off to restore and
regain energy from your working week. In the evening,
dim the lights, sip chamomile tea and diffuse a calming
essential oil blend to create a relaxing home ambience
and help slow down the busy rhythm from the day. For
a foot bath, fill a large bowl with warm water then swirl
in a drop of lavender oil and a sprinkle of Epsom salts.
Soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes. Performing this
foot-soak ritual a few times per week will help set the
tone for bedtime and encourage you to re-establish a
regular sleep routine.
Making space for these positive changes in your
lifestyle choices will help your skin look more glowing
and feel renewed.

HOW TO MANAGE
ANXIETY
Dr John Demartini encourages us to take control of our
perceptions, decisions and actions.

STYLE | wellbeing 83
I
n today’s fast-paced, hyper-connected society, there’s
an undeniable increase in the number of people
experiencing varying degrees of anxiety. With increasing
accessibility to ever more variable stimuli, anxiety has
become so commonplace that almost everyone will come
up against it in some way or another in their lifetime.
Anxiety is a form of secondary or tertiary fear. Fear is
the assumption that you are about to experience, in the
near or far future, through your senses or imagination:
more pain than pleasure; more negative than positive;
more disadvantage than advantage; or more challenge
than support from someone, some event, or something.
Anxiety arises because of secondary, tertiary, or
quaternary associations being made with a primary,
previously occurring experience that was perceived to
be more painful than pleasureful and more negative
than positive. All of these imbalanced perceptions
become stored in your subconscious mind and can be
activated by any secondary perceptual associations that
are encountered. Anxiety can be triggered when any
new perceptual associations similar to the original painful
memory of the previously stored event arises. Any
imbalanced and painful perception of the past can initiate
a fear of it, or something secondarily associated with it
reoccurring in the future.
physical. Any initially frightening event in any one or more
of these areas could initiate a series of cascading anxieties
due to secondary or tertiary associations. When you are
experiencing anxiety, there may not appear to be an obvious
emotional trigger to your response, but there actually is. It’s
just not conscious, due to it being a secondary association
derived from a seemingly unrelated, painful event.
For instance, if a small boy witnessed his father – wearing
blue jeans and a white shirt and with brown hair and a
moustache – screaming and violently beating his mother,
he could become frightened and run and hide under his
bed, shut his eyes and cover his ears until he falls asleep to
survive the ordeal. On the day that follows, his mother could
take him to the grocery store and while going down an aisle
another man that knows the mother could approach her
and speak. Since the approaching man is wearing blue jeans,
a white shirt and has brown hair and a moustache similar to
the father, the child could begin to feel anxious because of
the secondary associations made with his father due to the
similarity of appearances. Then, in the next aisle, another man
could approach the mother, but this time wearing blue jeans,
yellow shirt, brown hair and a moustache. Again, the boy
could feel anxious due to the similarities with the aggressive
father, and so on.
As new associations keep occurring with at least one or
two of the original features it could trigger varying degrees of
avoidance anxiety. Further secondary, tertiary and quaternary
associations can be made that repeatedly trigger varying
degrees of anxiety according to the degree of associations.
Eventually, hundreds of secondary associations can be
made that trigger mild anxieties without the boy seeing
the direct connection to the original event between the
parents. As long as the original event has been stored in the
subconscious mind without being balanced or neutralised it
can trigger lasting cascading associations and anxieties.
Identifying the many triggers can assist in uncovering the
original event that initiated the fear.
The simplest way to manage, and indeed overcome,
anxiety is to first identify what specifically it is that triggers
your anxiety reactions, and then identify the original fearful
event or stimulus behind it. Once the original stimulus is
identified you need to discover what the benefits were that
it provided. How has it served you and helped you fulfil what
is most important to your life? It’s never what happens to
you, it’s how you perceive it. If you can perceive an initially
frightening event in a way that’s not in the way but now on
the way, it can turn into a life-fulfilling opportunity. Finding
out how it served you can truly liberate you from that
anxiety, because there’s nothing in life that doesn’t have
a way of helping us. The key is to balance out the initial
emotional equation.
By uncovering the original event that induced the initial fear
or going directly to the initial event and balancing out the
perceptions of the event to dissolve the fear, in many cases
you can dissolve anxiety immediately.
We don’t have to be victims of our history, we can
be masters of our destiny by taking command of our
perceptions. While we can’t control what happens to
us, we do have command over how we perceive events
and our consequent decisions and our actions. We can
make a mountain out of a mole hill or a mole hill out of a
mountain. We can transform our once-assumed hell into an
opportunity if we take the time to find out how it serves us.
One of the greatest questions we will ever ask is “how is
whatever I am experiencing today helping me fulfil what is
most meaningful to me?” If you ask that question numerous
times each day and never give up on that question, you
liberate yourself from a lot of baggage, and anxiety and
depression can be melted away.

IT STARTS FROM WITHIN
With 35 years in the beauty industry, Wendy Barker of Beauty Progress
knows what makes a spa standout.
What has been one of your proudest moments of your
career?
Setting up the beautiful Champs-Elysees Beauty Day Spa
in the Heritage Hotel and achieving The Best Clinic and
Spa Award in 2005 in the New Zealand Beauty Therapy
Awards judged by The New Zealand Association of
registered Beauty Therapists.
How has your medical training impacted on your
approach to beauty therapy?
The reason a nurse does what he or she does is to
help people get well. Therefore, my approach to beauty
therapy and spa treatments (e.g. regular facials and body
massage) are for inner balance and wellbeing for the
positive effects on external beauty. It’s about preventing
the ageing process and disease of the body and skin.
Prevention is the key to better health.
What’s your philosophy on skincare?
To treat your skin gently, nourish and heal the skin with
good quality products that contain antioxidant vitamins,
minerals, amino acids/peptides and essential fatty acids
to rebuild and repair the skin. GERnetic, for example,
incorporates powerful, natural ingredients to prevent and
improve a wide range of skin conditions. Our skin was
given to us by nature, but it is up to us to nurture it.
Pollution is a big aggressor for skin and has been linked
to the rise of people suffering from sensitivity. It is also to
blame for many signs of premature ageing due to oxidative
stress, whereby damaging free radicals reduce the skin’s
ability to repair itself properly.
“Our skin was given to us
by nature, but it is up to us
to nurture it.”
How are international trends impacting what’s available
to us in New Zealand?
Beauty therapists/skin treatment therapists in New
Zealand have always been very avant-garde in their
approach to learning about the latest trends.
What we are seeing now is that consumers are more
aware of reading the ingredients lists on their chosen
products. They are wanting to be more ‘natural’ looking by
not wearing thick and heavy foundations, but rather taking
good care of their skin to achieve that ‘flawless’ look.
How will we know when we’ve found the right spa for
our personal wants and needs?
When you can totally relax and unwind in your
surroundings and trust your therapist implicitly.
THE E-BIKE
REVOLUTION
Don’t be put off by the sweat and the Lycra; there’s more
than one way to join the cycling movement.
Words Sarah Bright

STYLE | cycling 87
year ago, I would have shuddered
A at the suggestion of going for a bike
ride. I evade exercise and would prefer
to hold the sofa down on the weekend.
Living at Waikuku Beach surrounded by
extensive cycle tracks, my partner was
regularly out on his bike and incessantly
harping on about “the great outdoors”
and “being in the fresh air” and all that
malarkey. No thanks. My cranky knees
twitched at the notion. That was until
he suggested we buy me an electric bike
(e-bike)… and what a revolution it has
been; I am now an enthusiastic convert
and nothing beats being out there in
nature, turning the pedals and feeling
the wind in my hair.
With prices decreasing and recent
improvements in removable battery
technology, electric motors, suspension,
and lighter weight designs, e-bikes are
becoming more commonplace and
accepted by the public in all genres
of cycling. From your work commute,
pleasure riding, fitness riding to technical
off-roading mountain biking, there is
now an e-bike to suit every person
and budget. Who wouldn’t want to go
further, faster and to more places? They
ready do amplify your pedalling power
and your ability to do and see more.
Isn’t an electric bike cheating?
That’s a legitimate question a lot of people have. And
the answer is a firm no. It’s sensational how these bikes
have converted a whole troop of people to get on their
bike, often on trails otherwise inaccessible to them by
other means. Many who believed that bike riding was
impractical or impossible because of distance, hills, windy
weather, fitness, health reasons, joint problems, ageing or
even because of the inconvenience of having to shower
and change clothes after a morning commute. All this is
eliminated with e-bike ownership, along with fuel prices
for the commuter. It’s surely a win-win for the rider and
the environment.
You can choose how you use the motor and don’t
have to use it all the time. Merely adjust the amount
of pedal assist depending on how you feel. It can still
be quite a workout but without the worry of getting
exhausted and stranded far from home. You can turn up
the level of assist or even, on some models, use a throttle.
Most e-bike riders get more exercise as they ride more
often and for longer distances. Mine still makes me puff
but without me getting home in a sweaty, achey mess.

88 STYLE | cycling
Top tips for buying an e-bike
1. Consider your individual needs – with so many models
on the market, it’s best to first identify what features
are most important to you. If comfort is key, then
a step-through frame may be best. If hill climbing is
your buzz, a middle motor or high torque hub motor
may be essential. There are mountain bikes, such as
the Specialized Turbo Levo Hardtail (cycleways.co.nz),
which are designed specifically to tackle tough descents
while using less battery power. If riding long distance
is your cup of tea, you’ll need a meaty battery of at
least 400 watt-hours (Wh), or look to an additional
battery pack, as compatible with the eZee Sprint range
(actionbicycleclub.com) and your capacity can extend up
to 1000Wh.
2. Weight – pick up a few e-bikes and feel their weight.
They vary considerably. You might need to be able to
carry it over a stile or pick it up to put it on your bike
rack. If your battery runs out, could you still move it
with leg power alone?
3. Choose your retailer wisely – are the staff
approachable, knowledgeable and helpful? Does
the store have commitment to bikes, e.g. a visible
workshop, brand range, stock? Places like Christchurch
Electric Bicycles (christchurchelectricbicycles.co.nz) have
years of know-how to back their in-store expertise.
4. Test ride several – get a feel for the different types
available. Try out the power assist systems to see what
suits you best.
5. Warranty matters – two years is standard. Make sure
you are protecting your investment on parts, motor
and battery.
6. Choose for the long term – make sure you love the
one you choose, it’s a substantial purchase. You should
expect your bike to last five to 10 years with regular
service and your battery should last 1000-plus charges
(this equates to 30–40,000km of riding).
7. Quality counts – but service counts just as much.
Choose good componentry and a service plan if you
can’t maintain your e-bike yourself. If it’s a Bosch
motor, for example, you can be pretty assured it’s good
as they are selective about who sells their systems and
they provide great support and parts in New Zealand.
8. Buy local – go for a bricks-and-mortar store where you
can see the actual bike. Avoid purchasing from pop-up
stores, Trade Me or overseas websites where you
might be left in the lurch when it comes to parts and
support. You usually get what you pay for.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE
What the Jaguar I-Pace lacks in noise it more than makes up for in speed.
The all-electric Jaguar I-Pace has plenty
of party tricks. You can wind up its
windows or lock the doors by app and
push a button to raise the all-wheel-drive’s
suspension for off-roading. My favourite is
a simple one; what happens when you put
your foot down.
When I had the I-Pace in my driveway
it was one of those weekends when the
flow of visitors seemed never-ending.
Naturally, the Jaguar I-Pace HSE caught
everyone’s attention, it didn’t matter who it
was. Most ended up in the passenger seat,
as I shared the novelty that was turning
on a fully electric vehicle. The sound of
silence garnered much reaction from those
shocked by the realities of the EV. It was like
scooting around town in a monorail. Albeit
a very, very quick one.
The 2670kg all-wheel-drive vehicle has
400PS and 969Nm of torque just waiting
for you to engage it, instantly. While there
are modes from eco through to dynamic,
even in comfort this vehicle literally leaps off
the mark, ensuring there is always a smile on
your face when you arrive home – or back
from a test drive to show others just how
quick this cat is. Just look at the number:
0-100km/h in less than five seconds.
The 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack that
lies across the I-Pace’s wheelbase, evenly
distributing its weight, enables a road tripfriendly
470km range. And if you’ve never
driven a fully electric vehicle, this alleviates

STYLE | motoring 91
at least a little of the range anxiety.
It won’t stop you looking at your
supermarket and car parking buildings
in a new way (which have the ‘fast’
50kW chargers that charge for free) or
planning your most extensive journeys
with at least a one-hour meal break to
juice up the I-Pace at the same time.
You’ll also start wishing New Zealand
would hurry up and introduce the
100kW charging stations, as the I-Pace
would gain another 100km in just 15
minutes (400km of range per hour).
Clearly air conditioning use, the fans
that both heat and cool the front seats,
and how often you show off this beast’s
speed to your friends will all see the
numbers on your dashboard count
down a touch quicker. Fortunately,
Enhanced Brake Regeneration converts
the kinetic energy from braking to
electricity as soon as you lift your foot
Image: Charlie Rose Creative
off the accelerator. To drive more
conservatively, set this to high, which
will see the car slowing rapidly as soon
as that lead foot is lifted. Turn off
‘vehicle creep’ too and you will find
yourself driving with one pedal. (Yes,
the car comes to a complete standstill,
quickly, without touching the brake!)
When you are stationary in an electric
vehicle, the world around you seems
very noisy. I could have sworn that a
man chopping down the tree in his
backyard was doing so right beside me
as I was stopped at the traffic lights. It’s
a good thing the I-Pace HSE is decked
out with a Meridian 825W Surround
Sound System.
Smug in the knowledge I was driving
around in a silent assassin, ready to be
unleashed at any time I wished, there
was just one question that bothered
me. What sound does a car make?
ESCAPE FOR
THE SOUL
A luxury break in the Bay of Islands becomes more than just a
foretaste of summer for Bruce Munro and his wife.
ABOVE: A golden sunrise over Moturua and Urupukapuka Islands and the Rawhiti headland.

STYLE | travel 95
The divine decadence of twin outdoor tubs with an expansive
view of sea, sky and islands at Donkey Bay Inn.
It was as winter deepened that we got it in to our
heads to take a break in the Bay of Islands.
This was to be a splendid escape from the dreary
monotony of months spent going to and from work
under street lights; a vouchsafe in the heart of New
Zealand’s hospitable, historic north of better days
to come.
The Bay of Islands. The very name was a
connotation cornucopia. Beaches, yachts, seafood and
wine, extended family holidays, million-dollar baches
with 10 million-dollar views, all set in the birthplace of
our nation.
My connections, through my mother, dated back
to the 1950s when her Hokianga dairy-farming family
had taken mid-winter holidays at Russell, presenting
freshly caught snapper to the governor-general who
holidayed two doors along from their borrowed bach
at Long Beach. But it was a good decade since I had
taken a break in the Bay of Islands. And my wife had
last visited here as a five-year-old, staying in a tent
and caravan with her parents and five siblings at a
Paihia camping ground. The two of us were overdue
a lavish, leisurely return visit.
As the Opua vehicle ferry carried us across the
water to Okiato, on the southwestern arm of the
Russell peninsula, the late-afternoon drizzle gave way
to a bright rainbow; a multi-hued, heavenly gateway
to the start of our holiday.
The Duke of Marlborough Hotel was a fitting
introduction to the Bay of Islands, steeped as it is in
local history. Including its two former incarnations,
the Duke, sitting on the Russell waterfront, has had
a ringside seat to many significant moments in our
history. They stretch all the way from this former
capital of New Zealand being the debauched ‘hell
hole of the Pacific’ and the signing of the nation’s
founding document – the hotel’s first owner Johnny
Johnston had a hand in translating the Treaty into te
reo Maori – to American Western writer Zane Grey
championing the region’s world-class game fishing
during the 1920s and (who could forget) our own
future supermodel Rachel Hunter getting her first big
break in a hair product advert filmed aboard Duran
Duran lead singer Simon Le Bon’s yacht, right here in
the Bay, during the mid-1980s.
What a pleasure, each morning, to pull back the
curtains of our spacious waterfront room and step on
to our own balcony overlooking the gorgeous bay.

The waterfront Duke of Marlborough Hotel, in Russell, has been hosting Bay of Islands holidaymakers since before the Treaty of Waitangi.
The Duke wears its years with a jaunty pride and a knowing
smile, typified by the quirky history-bending artwork of Lester
Hall that adorns the walls of rooms, hallways and the classic
colonial-style restaurant complete with enticing open fireplace.
It was here we enjoyed fresh pan-fried hapuka, Romaine
hearts salad with Matakana blue cheese and poached
mandarin with white chocolate mousse. But dinner climaxed
with the entrée; tempura-battered Waikare Inlet oysters. The
appreciative noises my wife made with each crisp, soft, tasty
mouthful said it all. The only words she uttered were as she
finished the last one: “I think we need another half-dozen.’’
We spent our days in a leisurely way. Unwinding, enjoying
the beauty of the area, engaging with its Maori, English and
French history. The skies weren’t always clear; if it wasn’t
drizzling then rain wasn’t too far away. But it was reliably
warmer than home and everywhere we looked there seemed
to be a rainbow.
One afternoon, we turned up at the Paihia Beach Resort &
Spa for a couple’s massage. It isn’t difficult to be relaxed when
lying in a warm, low-lit, nicely decorated room having fragrant
oils rubbed deep into skin and tissue.
Another evening saw us back in Paihia, at Charlotte’s
Kitchen, set over the water and beneath the stars at the end
of the local wharf. Notwithstanding the delicious toasted goat
feta salad and pork and prawn sui mai entrées and double
chocolate mousse and orange ginger catalana desserts,
Charlotte’s triumph was the slow-roasted free range pork
knuckle with red cabbage kraut, mustard seed potatoes and
jus. Enormous, tender, flavoursome, with ample crackle, it is
no wonder this has become the restaurant’s signature dish.
The Ake Ake 2018 Chambourcin at its Vineyard Restaurant
was a tasty complement to the goat’s cheese croquette entrée.
Hole in the Rock colossus, Motu kokako
Island, rises from the sea just off Cape
Brett, Bay of Islands.
Fuller’s GreatSights’ Hole in the Rock
cruise is de rigueur for a visit to the
Bay of Islands. It’s also a great way to
experience that this is indeed a bay of
many, and beautiful, islands. Approaching
Motukokako, when the angle is right,
with its famous hole (just big enough to
sail the catamaran through) visible, the
island suddenly becomes a gigantic woolly
mammoth lumbering towards shore. Once
spotted, it is hard to see it any other way.
Dolphins are also in the offing. But if none
are apparent, passengers are able to get a
voucher for a return visit.
Waitangi is a special spot. And not a
small one. It is spread over several hectares
of groomed grounds and native bush.
From the museum and the waka taua, war
canoes, to the carved meeting house and
James Busby’s Treaty House, it is a suitably
impressive living memorial to the site where
two peoples became one nation. We
were treated to a guided tour, a carving
demonstration, a cultural performance, and,
while standing on the expansive flagpole
grounds overlooking water and islands,
another gorgeous rainbow.
That evening we dined at Ake Ake
Vineyard & Restaurant, a few minutes’
drive west of Kerikeri. After enjoying a very
pleasant glass of organic 2018 Chambourcin
in front of the fireplace, we took our
seats for the goat’s cheese croquette and
crumbed nobashi prawn entrées. The
texture and flavour explosions continued
with the mains – char-grilled yellow fin tuna
and confit of duck – reaching a crescendo
with the beautifully presented and equally
delicious desserts; a dark chocolate delice
with chantilly cream, grand marnier and
orange sauce and a Greek yoghurt panna
cotta with raspberry jelly, feijoa sorbet and
pistachio praline.
Could this luxury break get any better?

The soaring ceilings and sumptuous, iconoclastic decor in Donkey Bay Inn’s sitting room and
bar exemplifies host Antonio Pasquale’s gregarious, life-affirming nature.
Yes it could, with two glorious nights spent at Donkey
Bay Inn.
It is fitting that the entry to Donkey Bay Inn is through a
canary yellow tunnel. Although it is only over the hill from
Russell, this unique boutique hotel is in a parallel universe.
View the property from the air or a boat and you see
a large, distinctive, glass-fronted building with a living roof
of native plants; an off-the-grid luxury retreat set in to the
bush-clad hillside high above a picture-perfect sandy bay
with an eastward view of Te Rawhiti Inlet and the Bay’s
larger islands.
Pass through the yellow entranceway tunnel, however,
as we did on an overcast afternoon, and you enter a
mesmerising, opulent world where colour, curves and
magnificence reign supreme. From the soaring ceilings
and sumptuous, iconoclastic decor in the sitting room, bar
and library to the stunning sea and sky views from all four
bedrooms, including our Skyfall suite, we knew we had
been transported to somewhere special.
But the full effect is only felt by staying here.
Designed and built by our gregarious host, philosopher,
wine-maker and entrepreneur, Antonio Pasquale, Donkey
Bay Inn is an invitation to experience a new way of being –
luxury to free the body, non-linear shapes to free the mind
and a view to free the spirit.
It was an invitation we readily accepted.
Our second evening, for example, began neck-deep in
hot water and bubbles, soaking in private outdoor baths,
watching cormorants return to roost from distant fishing
grounds. The mid-evening was spent snuggled on the plush
velvet couches in the sitting room, sipping Donkey Bay’s
own excellent gin, supping on a delicious antipasto platter
kindly laid out by Amelia, the manager, and occasionally
sharing snippets of what we were each reading.
The opulent, quirky, sophisticated style of
Donkey Bay Inn’s Skyfall Suite.
Late in the evening, relaxed, smiling, we headed upstairs
to our suite and our king-sized, four-poster bed. When we
fell asleep, it was to a lulling backdrop of waves breaking
in the bay below and deep darkness above punctuated by
the lights of unknown distant villages and shimmering stars.
The next morning, preparing to leave, another skiff of
rain passed across the Bay. It left behind yet another vivid
rainbow, emerging from the sea directly in front of our
room, arching high and disappearing over the roof.
We stood together silently, taking in the striking scene.
Rainbows are a promise. But, I thought, their beauty is
also something to be enjoyed in itself. So, too, I realised
are breaks in our schedule; those pleasant diversions in the
midst of the grind. Spring breaks are a needed reminder
that summer and holidays will arrive; that a better day is
on its way. But equally, like rainbows, they are something
to be savoured for all the goodness they offer right here,
right now.
FOOD FINDS
From eatery updates to delicious dishes, we provide
the scoop on the latest taste sensations.
GO BACK TO...
Pita Pit, as group sharing platters are now a thing – just in
time for the party season. On the menu are Pita Nachos,
Loaded Hummus and Shared Salads along with the Pita
Platters that make catering the next get-together super
simple. It’s easy to order online too, with pick up in store
at Northlands.
SO HOT RIGHT NOW
There’s no doubt about it, oat milk is having a
moment and we’re currently trying every variety
in our flat whites and iced coffees. We’ve been
sipping oak milk by UK brand Minor Figures, and
also enjoying its canned coffees including Nitro
Cold Brew and oat milk iced lattés. Another
great option is New Zealand’s very own Otis oat
milk, which recently launched nationwide.
WORLD FAMOUS IN NZ
Restaurant co-owner Phoebe-Jane (PJ) Gemmell
and head chef Rob Dicky of Fisherman’s Wharf
(39 Norwich Quay) appeared on screens
nationwide recently as they put their culinary
skills on the table for Kiwi reality TV series
My Restaurant Rules. The pair were one of two
South Island restaurants to join the five and
served the ever-popular gluten-free ‘luscious
lemon’ dessert with ground almonds, lemon
curd, passion fruit pulp and cream. Just one of
the delicious recipes Rob has finessed through
lessons passed down by his grandmother.

SURF’S UP
Pescetarians rejoice. The Grand Café at Christchurch
Casino (30 Victoria Street) has brought back its popular
dining experience – buffets with all the trimmings.
For breakfast, lunch or dinner, and brunch on the
weekends, head straight to the mouth-watering seafood
station, then dive into the fresh salads. Fellow diners
will love the carvery or grill, wide range of antipastos
and sumptuous soups. Plus, expect a broad range of
international delights that see a focus on Italian and
Asian fare. Finish with lashings of fresh cheese and
something naughty from the exceptional dessert bar.
WHO’S COOKING
Cucina (1 Tees Street) opened its doors three
years ago in Oamaru, thanks to Pablo Tacchini
and Yanina Muriel, who also own Tees Street
Café next door. Cucina specialises in pasta, which
is made from scratch every single day with strong
flavours of Argentinian-style meats and an array
of other dishes inspired by the duo’s mixed
heritage. Tuck into fresh seafood, empanadas
and finish off your meal with cinnamon churros.
3 O’CLOCK FLAVOUR SAVIOUR
Whenever we’re craving something a bit indulgent, we
love venturing to Original Foods’ own café in Wigram
(8 Stark Drive) for a C4 coffee paired with one of their
doughnuts. If you’ve yet to try the pink sprinkles, get on
it. Homer Simpson would be proud.
AFTER FIVE
Attention cider lovers. You’ll want
to try Zeffer’s new flavours this
summer. We’re partial to the
Cherry, but their Rosé Cider with
Berry Infusion for the beach entices.
Grab yourself a bottle and pack a
picnic for the ultimate day out.

- IN THE PANTRY -
We’ve been stocking up on these Raw
Wholefood Bars by Ceres Organics,
which are available at New World
caramel and cacao fig orange, they’re the
perfect mid-morning snack that won’t
make you crash an hour later.
WE’RE DRINKING
Giant Aperol spritz at Evil Genius (1091
Ferry Road, Ferrymead). Seriously, it’s the size
of your head and ridiculously refreshing.
A GOOD START
Delight in the taste of summer with Untouched
World Kitchen’s (155 Roydvale Avenue) new
Chia Fruit Crumble. The nutty crunch of granola
and fresh seasonal fruits are married together
by delicate vanilla chia seed pudding to form a
delicious and nourishing breakfast that will kickstart
your day.
SPRING SIP
Enjoy a little Kiwi flora in your next G&T with
Curious Dry gin. The Christchurch-based team at
The Spirits Workshop (11 Sandyford Street) use
Canterbury barley to distill the base spirit, add
the only import – the essential juniper berries
– then its all about four key natives: kawakawa,
horopito (bush pepper), East Coast manuka and
tarata (lemonwood). The result? A classic dry
gin with a bright herbaceous freshness thanks to
those botanicals. Good gift for the gin purist, who
doesn’t bother with flavoured tonic.
