Licence swap extended
SPECIAL MEASURES put
in place by the Department
of Transport (DGT)
for UK nationals living in
Spain to exchange their
British driving licence
have now been extended.
The new deadline to register
a request to exchange is
now January 31st, although
the British embassy advises
doing it as soon as possible.
It doesn’t matter if a UK
licence has expired or has
been lost, and the process
can be started with an NIE
number, even if you don´t
have a green residency document
physically in your
hand.
The British embassy says

that the first step of the process
is essentially asking the
Spanish authorities to verify
your UK licence either online
or by making a phone
call to 060.
The formal request for
exchange is done once you
go in for your appointment
at a DGT office, at which
point you will need a valid
residency certificate.
If you started the process
in October, you can now request
an appointment at
your Jefatura Provincial
de Tráfico.
If you started the process
this month, or are about to
start the process, you can
request an appointment
at the JPT two days after
registering your details.
The DGT recommends that
you continue using the special
measures for UK licence
holders.

MARGARITA Salas, regarded
as the most important
scientist ever to come
from Spain, died last week
at the age of 80.
She was born in the Asturian
town of Canero in 1938
and after gaining a degree
in chemistry started making
her name in the field of molecular
science in the 1960s.
Unlike many female scientists
at that time, she was
given the credit for her work
rather than the plaudits going
to male colleagues, a recognition
of the importance of
her contributions.
Much of her early work
was carried out in the USA
and she was a pioneer in the
field of DNA when this was
a branch of science in its infancy.
Her research from 50
years ago is still the benchmark
for modern DNA science,
although she continued
working in this until just a
few days before she died in

DNA does for thief
A 44-year-old Algerian national
has been arrested
after police charged him
using DNA evidence.
The initial incident happened
in Alicante at the end
of the summer when a motorhome
was broken into.
