IT may be held in the
Autumn, but Benidorm’s
Fancy Dress
Party is regarded as
possibly the town’s
busiest day of the year.
This year has been no
exception as hordes of
mainly British revellers
dodged the showers and
took to the streets (not
to mention the clubs and
bars) to celebrate.
Yesterday (Thursday 14
November) if you were in
the New or Old Town you
will have been greeted
with the site of St Trinians
schoolgirls, Smurfs,
the Village People, half
a dozen Donald Trumps
and pretty much anything
Russell
else you can think of.
Many Brits fly over especially
for the madcap
event, making it a welcome
addition to the resorts
out of season calendar,
although Benidorm,
of course, is never really
out of season.
This year it is estimated
that over 35,000
people attended despite
the weather not being as
good as it often is.
The Fancy Dress Festival
marked the unofficial
end of the town’s
(slightly more sober)
Spanish fiestas from 8 to
AN Alicante travel agent has been arrested
after allegedly conning dozens
of people out of money to pay for nonexistent
flights.
There have been 31 official complaints
about 70 people who have been affected and
the figure may be much higher.
Most of the victims are Colombians or
other Latin Americans as well as some
Spanish nationals.
They had purchased tickets through the
agency to visit relatives in their home countries
or to fly them out to Spain.
These had then been cancelled and no refund
made. The National Police arrested a
39-year-old Bolivian man on Tuesday, and
they are now trying to determine exactly
how many people have been caught up in
the con.
The men were arrested at
Post election deal
SPAIN’S prime minister
and PSOE Socialist party
leader, Pedro Sánchez
signed a coalition deal
with the leader of the far-
Left Podemos party on
Tuesday, but the compact
still leaves them short of
by Alex Trelinski
enough seats to form a
majority government after
Sunday's general election.
Mr Sánchez, who failed
to reach agreement with
Podemos after winning a
general election in April, embraced
its leader Pablo Iglesias
after signing the agreement,
saying a 10-point
document was the basis for a
“progressive government for
a complete legislature”.
Mr Sánchez's PSOE won
the most votes, but did
not pick up enough seats to
govern alone.
Referring to the rise of the
hard-Right Vox party, which
came third in Sunday’s second
election in six months,
Iglesias described the deal
with PSOE as a “vaccine
against the extreme Right”.
“What was an opportunity
in April is now a duty,” Iglesias
said after Vox won 52
seats in Congress out of 350.
PSOE and Podemos held
talks in the summer over a
coalition government, but
FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 3
failed to reach agreement,
even though Podemos accepted
the condition that
Iglesias would not be given a
cabinet post.
Under Tuesday's agreement,
it is understood that
Mr Iglesias would become
deputy prime minister, but
with PSOE and Podemos
21 seats short of a majority,
the route to getting a stable
government is tricky as Congress
is made of 16 parties.
The leader of the conservative
Partido Popular, Pablo
Casado, said his 88 MPs
would not support a “radical
Sánchez and
Iglesias
Left” government.
A statement by the centrist
Ciudadanos, whose leader
Albert Rivera resigned on
Monday after the party
gained just ten seats in the
election, also ruled out offering
its support, although it
could still choose to abstain.
Getting financial advice can often
be a worrying time for some people.
Knowing who you can trust is often
the main concern.
As always, I like to provide my
readers with information that they can
use whether that’s today, tomorrow
or in the future. Here are my key
questions when it comes to picking
the right financial adviser:
• How much time are they
willing to spend to understand
your financial goals?
Every relationship should begin
with a robust discovery process
so they know you and your needs
well. There’s no formula for how
long it should take — but an
adviser should be thoughtful and
thorough, asking for more than just
basic information about net worth,
account values and birth dates.
• How are they compensated?
The main thing to look out for
here is whether they are paid
commission by particular fund
providers. This practice (which is
now illegal in the UK) motivates
advisers to place you into
investments are in their best interest
as appose to yours. Of course the
adviser needs to make a living,
but the rewards to them should be
based solely on providing the best
possible service and solution to
you.
Finance Feature
provided by...
What questions should I ask my financial adviser?
• How are the company
regulated?
When choosing a company or
individual to provide financial
advice, it is advisable that
you check that they are firstly
registered by the CMNV, and
DGS and secondly adhere to
regulation standards of the country
which in itself has more advanced
and comprehensive financial
regulation.
• Are they willing to customise
investment strategies when
needed?
Advisory fees are earned, not
simply “harvested,” and you
should ask for examples of how an
adviser has responded to changing
conditions for their clients. (How,
for example, has the firm responded
to persistently low interest rates
for clients who need current
income?) The traditional default
diversification strategy of 60%
stocks, 40% bonds isn’t effective in
the current environment. A capable
firm will research and innovate new
strategies on their clients’ behalf.
• Do they ask hard questions?
Advisors must be willing to have
fearless conversations with clients.
Planning should also address
painful contingencies such as
deaths in the family, divorce,
and market downturns. And they
should be willing to challenge
clients: If your spending levels
are compromising your ability to
maintain financial independence in
retirement, for example, the adviser
needs to raise the topic.
• Can they help you get any
specific help you need?
Maybe you have moved to Spain
and are not yet taking pension
benefits and need help weighing
the financials or you are concerned
about inheritance tax, a good
adviser should not hesitate to dig in
and help.
Missing man
• Do you have many clients
who are in a similar position
to me?
Some financial advisers will only
deal with people who have a pension
pot of a certain size, or a certain
amount of money to invest (e.g. £50k
or £100k. Other advisers are happy to
advise clients no matter what the size
of their pension fund is. It’s always
worth finding out if an adviser has a
lot of experience of advising clients
in a similar position to yours.
A 16 month long national
investigation about the illegal
sale of archaeological
pieces has resulted in
the arrest of three men in
Denia, including an Irish
national.
The Seprona arm of the
Guardia Civil became aware
of the possible sale of goods
in July 2018 and started an
investigation that also involved
museums in Alicante,
Malaga and Madrid.
The agents tracked down
an online auction of 219 artefacts
including ornaments,
jewellery, coins and clothing
dating back to Roman times
or earlier that it is believe
came from sites in Madrid,
Israel and the Balkans.
The auction was being run
by an antiques shop in Denia
and, when questioned,
the owner was unable to adequately
verify the origin of
the items.
He said he was acting as
an intermediary for an Italian
citizen who is also being
questioned.
Representatives from the
museums and also Alicante
University are now tasked
with identifying the pieces
and whether they were
stolen.
Early indications are that
all of them are authentic and
may have been taken from
archaeological sites, both
here and abroad.
The oldest artefacts date
back to Neolithic times as
well as coming from the Iron
Age, Bronze Age and 1st to
5th century Roman times.
The three detainees, an
Racism rears its ugly head
IT is difficult to say whether
racism here in Spain is
getting worse or people
are more likely to complain
about what might
once have seemed almost
acceptable, but a recent
incident on a Madrid bus
by Simon Russell
has shocked many.
A young Spanish man was
filmed telling a Latin American
woman to “go back to her
own f*****g country” after
she refused to swap seats
with him, a rant he continued
after she said she was in
her own country, something
which seemed to infuriate
him even more.
When she gets off the bus
the man is seen hitting and
kicking her while a female
Valencian Community, two
of them in Alicante province.
They have initially been
charged with fraud and crimes
The victim has not yet
made an official complaint,
but the video has gone viral,
asking many to call for
action.
In Spain there has long
been an underlying racism
millions of Latin Americans
Once again the Corro-Parroquial
from La Romana sang
Spanish hymns, including a
rendition of “We will Remember
Them,” especially written
and arranged for the Service.
Former Branch President
Peter Broadbent told the
congregation about his and
his wife’s Grandfathers and
their involvement in World
War I. A very poignant tribute
to them and all those
who served their country
then and since.
Following the Service, the
congregation paraded to the
garden of the Ayuntamiento,
where wreaths, flowers and
poppy crosses were laid.
The Hondón Valley Branch
would like to thank all those
who attended the Service,
marking this very special
day in the Legion calendar.
The next meeting of the
Branch is on Tuesday 19th
by Alex Trelinski
saw Pedro Sanchez's PSOE
socialists come out on top, as
the largest single party.
Dozens of vehicles blocked
the motorway with around
300 people setting up
a barricade.
Some demonstrators began
to set up a stage and
speakers which they brought
to the scene in vans.
STAFF at Valencia’s Manises
airport have been given
the unusual task of trying
to track down the owners
of 24 aircraft that have apparently
been abandoned
at the site over the years.
They range from small
light aircraft to a Boeing
Under air navigation laws
details about the craft need
to be published in the State
Pot Street
THE Guardia Civil have uncovered
a marijuana operation
in Oliva that used
interconnected houses
to cultivate an estimated
1,800 plants.
This urban farm would
have meant that tending
for the crop was easier and
the suspects were less likely
to raise suspicion by continually
going in and out of
properties.
However, it is thought
by Simon Russell
that the smell of the plants
led to local residents reporting
the matter and
earlier this month two
people were arrested while
another 11 are under investigation
for links to the
operation.
A number of items commonly
used for cultivating
the drug have also
been seized.
and Alicante, each housing
four young people, making
the transition from the orphanage
Licence swap extended
SPECIAL MEASURES put
in place by the Department
of Transport (DGT)
for UK nationals living in
Spain to exchange their
British driving licence
have now been extended.
The new deadline to register
a request to exchange is
now January 31st, although
the British embassy advises
doing it as soon as possible.
It doesn’t matter if a UK
licence has expired or has
been lost, and the process
can be started with an NIE
number, even if you don´t
have a green residency document
physically in your
hand.
The British embassy says
by Alex Trelinski
that the first step of the process
is essentially asking the
Spanish authorities to verify
your UK licence either online
or by making a phone
call to 060.
The formal request for
exchange is done once you
go in for your appointment
at a DGT office, at which
point you will need a valid
residency certificate.
If you started the process
in October, you can now request
an appointment at
your Jefatura Provincial
de Tráfico.
If you started the process
this month, or are about to
start the process, you can
request an appointment
at the JPT two days after
registering your details.
The DGT recommends that
you continue using the special
measures for UK licence
holders.
MARGARITA Salas, regarded
at the age of 80.
She was born in the Asturian
town of Canero in 1938
and after gaining a degree
in chemistry started making
her name in the field of molecular
science in the 1960s.
Unlike many female scientists
at that time, she was
given the credit for her work
rather than the plaudits going
to male colleagues, a recognition
of the importance of
her contributions.
Much of her early work
was carried out in the USA
and she was a pioneer in the
field of DNA when this was
a branch of science in its infancy.
Her research from 50
years ago is still the benchmark
for modern DNA science,
although she continued
working in this until just a
few days before she died in
Promoting the
Alicante diet
by Simon Russell
THE Alicante University
(UA) and City Council are
collaborating to promote
the gastronomy of the city
and further increase its
burgeoning tourist industry.
This includes the Mediterranean
Rice and Haute Cuisine
Master project which
the UA already promotes.
This opens new lines of
research into innovation
within the Alicante gastronomic
sector, focusing on
what visitors are looking for
while recognising the importance
of the world famous
Mediterranean diet.
Mayor Luis Barcala
signed an agreement for a
grant of €4,000 to help pay
for this research.
Racist tweet under
investigation
THE Prosecutor’s Office in
Valencia has denounced
the local far right Vox party
for an official party statement
on social networks
that was clearly meant to
incite a racial backlash.
The message on Twitter
referred to the sexual
abuse of a woman by five
youths on a naturist beach
by Simon Russell
in Cullera in June.
The Vox statement said
that the men were “Magrebies”
(of sub-Saharan origin)
when in fact they were
all Spanish nationals and of
Spanish extraction.
Although the group went
to court the next day almost
five months later the Vox
statement is still on-line and
has never been corrected or
deleted.
TELECOMS operator Telefonica
is to appeal a six
million euro fine lodged by
Spain’s antitrust watchdog
CNMC last week, over accusations
of discriminating
against competitors when
carrying out repairs on its
high-speed networks.
A 19-year-old woman died
in a car accident on the CV-
50 in Catadau (Valencia)
last Thursday, as reported
by CICU, the emergency
information centre.
The event took place at
around 7.30 in the evening
when the car the victim was
travelling in hit a truck,
turning over and blocking
the road.
A 25-year-old male was
badly injured in the crash
and is in Valencia’s La Fe
Hospital on a life support
machine.
Driving conditions were
said to be good at the time
of the accident and an investigation
will be opened into
the cause of the tragedy.
Unemployed helping
with clean-up
ABOUT 400 people in the
Valencian Community who
are currently registered
as unemployed will be given
temporary work to help
with the massive clean-up
operation following the
recent storms.
Those areas receiving a
by Simon Russell
government grant for this
project include the Vega Baja,
Baix Vinalopo, l’Alt Vinalopo,
el Comtat, La Costera and
the Vall d’Albaida.
The selection process has
already started and those
POLICE in Elche have arrested
a man who locked
his daughters, aged 12 and
15, in an office building for
more than three days.
The man had joint custody
with the girl’s mother,
who was told last Sunday
that someone had seen the
young pair in the office,
shouting for help to release
them.
She called the police who
managed to access the building
after being unable to find
the girl’s father. They broke
the door down and released
the children into the care of
their mother.
The authorities said that
the office completely failed
to meet habitability laws,
having no bathroom, beds,
kitchen or even lighting.
The children said that
they had been in the room
chosen will be hired for six
months.
The total of the grants
given for the work is €5.8
million and applicants
need to apply via the Valencian
Employment and
Training Service website
Major find at
ancient site
THE archaeological excavation
at Benidorm’s
Tossal de La Cala has
uncovered a metre long
amphora, which is completely
intact and has
been removed and transferred
to the University
of Alicante for further
studies.
by Simon Russell
An amphora was used for
the storage and transportation
of wine by the Romans,
and the site itself is an old
Roman fort.
Due to its size this relic
is believed to probably have
been ceremonial and is a
rare find, probably dating
back about 2,000 years and
made in a Cadiz pottery
factory.
The dig is in its last phase
before stopping for the winter
and forms part of Benidorm’s
campaign to show it
is more than a “sun, sea and
sangria” type resort.
Chinese course for the young
by Simon Russell
BENIDORM’S Youth Department
are organising a
course to learn the basics
of the Chinese language
and also about the country
itself, starting on 25
November and ending on
20 December.
Many young people are
now choosing to learn Chinese
as their second language
as it becomes increasingly
important globally,
especially for business.
The curriculum will include
teaching about Chinese
culture, basic vocabulary,
useful phrases and
grammar for beginners.
For more information
or to register, contact the
Youth Information Centre
between 14 November and
22 November.
The registration fee is
€40, and the course is from
8pm to 10pm Mondays to
Fridays.

UK economy stalls
BRITAIN'S economy has
grown at the slowest annual
rate in almost a
decade, as the Brexit
uncertainty continues, according
to official figures.
Year-on-year growth in
the three months to end-September
slowed to 1% from
1.3% in the second quarter,
the Office for National Statistics
said.
An ONS spokesman said:
"Looking at the picture over
the last year, growth slowed
to its lowest rate in almost
a decade."
But the economy avoided a
recession by growing 0.3% in
the third quarter.
The economy had shrunk
in the second quarter and
two quarters of contraction
would have technically signalled
a recession.
Ruth Gregory, senior UK
economist at Capital Economics,
said that while the
economy avoided a recession
in the third quarter, the
by Alex Trelinski
the eastern end of the town
and will be about half a kilometre
long.
economy was "pretty soft".
Tej Parikh, chief economist
at the Institute of Directors,
said that "a return to
growth is welcome news, but
narrowly avoiding a recession
is nothing to celebrate".
"The UK economy has
been in stop-start mode all
year, with growth punctuated
by the various Brexit
deadlines," he added.
The Chancellor, Sajid Javid,
said the figures were
"another welcome sign that
the fundamentals of the UK
economy are strong. Under
the Conservatives, we've
seen nine consecutive years
of growth".
But John McDonnell, the
shadow chancellor, said:
"The fact that the government
will be celebrating
0.1% growth in the last six
months is a sign of how low
their hopes and expectations
for our economy are."
Plans to connect
BENISSA has been granted
just over €120,000 in
aid from the provincial
government to start construction
of a pedestrianised
walkway at the
town’s train station.
The Diputacion confirmed
the grant this week, saying
it would improve safety
for both people on foot and
drivers.
The work will start where
Calle dels Fuster intersects
with Avenida de l’Estacio on
by Simon Russell
Ultimately the plan is to
connect the station with the
main town centre, to benefit
both visitors and local
residents alike.
THEFT from retailers in
2 billion euros a year,
adding an average of
for 15 years appears
to have finally been
given the go-ahead by the
city planners.
The 60 to 80 room building
is to be located in the Eixarchs
Palace close to the Central
Market which is designated
by Simon Russell
an Asset of Local Relevance
and so requires the approval
of the Heritage Commission
as well as the planners.
This has now been given
and, providing it is rubber
stamped at the Ministry of
almost a quarter of all thefts
are by shop staff and other
employees such as warehouse
workers.
The total is equivalent to
just under 1% of all goods
produced for sale and the figures
show that stealing from
large retailers is not a “victimless
crime” but impacts
all customers, with the poor
and large families suffering
disproportionately as prices
increase.
There are also concerns
from retailers about the
steady rise of digital crime,
although it is still small compared
to more conventional
thefts.
Culture, construction work
should start soon.
Some locals have complained
about the project,
both about the disruption
that will be caused by the
works and the idea of building
at such a culturally sensitive
spot.
Beware Black Friday
flight bargains
by Simon Russell
THE UK’s largest independent
consumer watchdog
Which? has warned consumers
that many Black
Friday travel deals are not
all they seem.
They say that offers from
the likes of Ryanair and Tui
are “either exaggerated or
non-existent”, giving the
example of Ryanair “offers”
which were no cheaper on
Black Friday with very limited
availability another
problem.
One flight, from Stansted
to Barcelona at the seeming
bargain price of £4.88 “did
not appear to exist at all” according
to the Which? report.
The watchdog is urging
people to think twice about
buying flights advertised
as a Black Friday deal, still
a relatively new concept in
Europe and even more so for
travel discounts.
Which? believed there is
an element of some firms
jumping on the bandwagon,
taking advantage of the publicity
generated by Black Friday,
in the US traditionally
the last Friday in November
and usually the biggest sale
day of the year.

FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 23
Business & Money
Do you need a
Spanish will?
IT’S a subject that no-one
likes talking about – but
it is a conversation that
everyone needs to have.
Have you got your affairs
in order if anything should
happen to you?
Estimates vary, but it
is generally agreed that
around two thirds of British
people do not have a will.
And if a British national
who owns assets in Spain
dies without a will, matters
can – and do - become rather
complicated.
The Spanish legal system
is very different when
it comes to the inheritance
procedure compared to other
countries like the UK.
It is also worth noting that
Spanish inheritance law also
varies from region to region.
Legal experts at Sun Lawyers,
a Spanish law firm
with more than 30 years of
experience and several offices
across the Costa Blanca,
say that makes it vital to get
the right advice.
Its spokesman says: “You
really must have a Spanish
will if you have property or
any other assets over here.
“We recently got a letter
from a gentleman about the
sad story of his wife passing
away and she had not made
a Spanish will involving her
property in this country.
“That has sadly seen extra
stress for him at a time
when he does not need it,
and it has also cost him
thousands of euros to sort
everything out.”
Having a Spanish will ensures
that the inheritance
procedure is straightforward
and less costly.
EU citizens living in
Spain, as well as a number of
non-EU countries, can now
choose whether the law of
their home country or their
country of residence applies.
If a foreign resident dies
without leaving a will or
making an official declaration
on which law they wish
to apply, the law of the country
where they resided for
the last five years will apply.
If your estate is dealt with
under Spanish inheritance
law, forced heirship rules
apply - known as the Law of
Obligatory Heirs in Spain.
This means there are restrictions
on how you distribute
your estate, as a certain percentage
needs to be set aside
for certain relatives.
If you die without leaving
a Spanish will, the laws of
intestate succession apply.
In Spanish succession law,
this means that the estate
will be inherited by the following
- taking into account
the Law of Obligatory Heirs:
• children of the deceased
• if there are no children,
the parents
• if no children or parents,
the surviving spouse
• if there are none of these,
then the next closest
blood relatives (up to a
fourth-grade limit in the
family tree)
• if there are no legal beneficiaries
from any of
these groups, then the
Spanish state inherits
the estate!
Making a Spanish will can
also help sort out what levels
of inheritance tax are likely
to be paid.
The rules and Spanish
inheritance tax rates vary
according to the relationship
between the donor and
beneficiary, although generally
unmarried couples
and step-children pay more
tax than spouses and natural
children.
Brexit Paralysis
and My Money
The UK sees a massive downturn
of business on the high streets,
especially with established
businesses like Mothercare and
Thomas Cook recently going into
administration. You may not know
that many other retail companies
have gone from the high street
or closed a large number of their
shops, such as; Woolworths, MFI,
Principles, Focus, C&A, Comet,
Tie Rack, Barratts Shoes, Stead
and Simpsons, to name but
a few. The Daily Mail reported
there have been over a 100 CEO
changes in the last year alone as
they grapple with the downturn in
the UK economy. The so called
“Brexit Paralysis”, with the UK
Government in meltdown, MPs
infighting, and a looming general
election has meant that UK house
prices and sales are generally
stagnant or falling. In addition
the UK construction industry and
economy are shrinking. Add to
this the UK Government paralysis
over Brexit, a possible change of
Government, along with exchange
rates all over the place and the
downward spiral of economic
confidence continues.
So is it Brexit or is it confidence
that causes us as individuals to
get caught in the headlights in
all of this? Well probably both. I
regularly hear “ I will wait to see
what Brexit brings before I do
anything”. i.e. move house, buy a
house, sell my house, exchange
money, make an investment, take
or make any decisions with my
pensions or investments, sort out
my Spanish Tax and legal position
etc. So where does this leave
you?
Well if we all look at the bigger
more positive picture instead of
dwelling on the headline grabbing
details like those above, we
can see that there are many
opportunities in business. Since
the Brexit referendum held on
23rd June 2016, the FTSE 100
index was at 6261 points and
today it stands at circa 7300
points. Therefore, if that is
anything to go by then investors
who bought shares in UK
businesses in the top 100 share
index since then, are doing quite
well despite the retail downturn.
So does this apparent confidence
crisis and apparent paralysis
extend to our own finances, and
if so what should be done to
take advantage of the current
opportunities? The one thing
that I would say after having
advised investors for over 27
years is this; there is no timing
the markets, it’s the time in the
markets that’s most important!
It is extremely important to take
professional financial advice,
especially from a Company that
planning advice in Spain for
over 30 years, by helping clients
reduce tax and make their savings
work harder. So don’t wait until
something happens, make a
start now! I am a fully qualified
investment adviser and can
give you advice on getting your
finances in order. I can look at
ways of reducing your Spanish Tax
liability such as Capital Gains Tax
and Inheritance Tax as well as any
advice you need on Brexit and
Residencia. I understand what is
happening in the markets so can
Going back
to a greener
future for all
SUSTAINABILITY is here
to stay with increasing
numbers of people looking
to bygone times in their
efforts to become greener
in the garden.
“Regenerative gardening”
- with its practices such
as composting and organic
growing and no-tilling to rejuvenate
the soil – is just one
of the trends predicted for
2020 in a new report.
It says: “This year’s trends
are reinventions from a bygone
era — helping to reconnect
us with nature, rejuvenate
the soil and lead us to
a more thoughtful approach
to life.
“Certainly, times have
changed, but if we can combine
the wisdom of the past
with the science and technology
of today, our future could
be very bright.”
The 2020 Garden Trends
Report, ‘Seeing 20/20’,
also emphasises the role
sustainability will play
in consumerism and the
green industry.
Katie Dubow, creative
director at Garden Media,
authors of the report, says:
“From the way we design our
cities to the people who work
in them, the green industry
will be at the forefront of urban
growth and development
in 2020.”
The report also predicts
that the millennial ‘plant
parent’ movement will continue
its growth. Its authors
say the “obsession” with
houseplants shows no sign
of fading.
It adds: “As younger generations
find themselves with
less space, time and money,
they are turning to indoor
plants for the benefits.
“Plants clean the air, reduce
stress, bring life to a
room, enhance creativity and
connect you with nature.”
And it adds that the trend
will move beyond growing
plants in apartments to cultivating
relationships and
introducing “a new demographic
to gardening”. Katie
says: “Plant swaps are the
new garden clubs.”
Its research has revealed
the greatest numbers of
houseplants sold are succulents.
They are easy to grow
and personalise. Tall indoor
plants are also popular.
Looking outside, the report
says blue-coloured
plants will be the most
sought after for gardens.

mindful
AS 2020 fast approaches,
interior design experts are
predicting it will be the
year of ‘mindful living’.
They believe that “wellness-inspired”
spaces are set
to become the favourite spots
The thinking behind
mindful living is simple: In
today’s world everything is
fast, easy and digital, yet
natural instinct pushes people
to disconnect and slow
down to regain their sense
and quality of life.

Here Rebecca Snowden,
Interior Style Advisor at Furniture
Choice, shares three
of her style tips for designing
a home that’s focused on
mindful living.
1. Start with
a clean and
calm neutral
palette
Begin the year refreshed
and rejuvenated with the
help of a home environment
that focuses on living well.
Start by introducing a
quality of softness into the
home, coupled with interior
design that’s comforting and
inviting.
Rebecca says: “Let the intention
of creating a clean
and soothing ambience guide
your design decisions. Ultimately,
the goal is to create
a personal haven you’ll love
going home to relax in.”
Make it a priority to get
plenty of good quality sleep.
In the bedroom, a white
wooden bed presents the perfect
starting point in a space
meant for restful slumber.
Select comfortable bedding
with minimal prints to
focus on creating an uncluttered,
restful environment.
Where possible, go with furniture
that features curves
and organic lines instead of
sharp, straight edges.
2. Nature is
nurturing
Nothing relaxes the mind
more than being surrounded
by nature; particularly,
plants.
Start the year on a green
note by maximising on the
benefits of having indoor
plants.
Choose a mix of large and
small greenery, and varieties
that help clean the air. Leafy,
trailing plants also inject
a little wildness to create a
tropical inspired ambience.
Besides making the air
fresher, their lush green colour
is soothing on the eyes
after a long day of working
with screens.
To continue the natural
theme, pick furnishings
made with materials like
wood, rattan, or clay.
Rebecca explains: “The
warmth and rawness of
their surfaces contribute to
a design that has a soothing,
back to nature vibe.”
3. Dedicate
a corner for
conscious
relaxation
As a reminder to make
wellbeing a priority for
the year ahead, allocate
a corner that’s dedicated
to relaxation.
“A little nook will do; you’ll
only need enough space
to practise your preferred
stretches,” says Rebecca.
For meditation and
stretching exercises, fit it out
with a yoga mat or thick rug.
She adds: “If you have
a work desk at home, it’s a
good idea to carve out a zen
zone within the same room
for quick stretch breaks.”
Maintaining the same
neutral palette, style the
space in light hues, and include
plenty of plants. Another
factor to consider is
the accessibility of natural
daylight.

BUYING OR SELLING
YOUR PROPERTY?
SWISS PEOPLE,
SWISS VALUES!
• Experience
The key to
• Quality
cadastral value
• Timeliness
• Friendliness
Av. de La Marina 44
(Calpe Moraira Coast Road)
WHENEVER you decide to
buy a property in Spain,
the words cadastral value
should quickly appear in
your purchase process.
Essentially it surrounds
the actual price you will pay
for your home and all the
taxes that you will face.
The cadastral value is the
figure that the authorities
give to each property, based
on data found on the land
registry.
Therefore it is a very good
rule of thumb as to the capital
value of your new home.
It is also the amount to be
looked in regard to taxes and
is based on several factors
including those imposed by
the council area and region
of Spain that you live in.
Essentially, the cadastral
value is normally lower than
the market value of the property,
and will never be higher
than that market valuation.
Knowing the cadastral
by Alex Trelinski
value of a property means
that buyers should never
sell below that figure unless
they are seriously desperate
to sell or in trouble.
It is the cadastral value that
you take into consideration
when paying taxes to both the
Spanish Government and to
your town hall.
Therefore, calculating the
cadastral value will let you
know how much tax you will
pay when buying the property
and when owning it.
You know the tax rate, and
you know the base, so therefore
you can also compare
among properties based on
real final numbers.
Taxes include:
1. Non-resident income tax.
If you spend less than 183
days per year in Spain
(you are a non-resident),
you should pay this tax
on the incomes obtained
in Spain. If you are not
Trust renting us out to your sell property, your property
you will still pay a small
CALL TODAY TO LIST YOUR PROPERTY
percentage as if you were
renting out.
2. IBI/Real estate tax. The
IBI (“impuesto sobre bienes
inmuebles”) is a tax
you pay to the town hall
in which the property
is located.
3. Plusvalía is a tax included
on the income tax or
in the corporate tax that
must be paid by the seller.
4. Wealth tax is a progressive
tax that is applied
to your worldwide assets
if you are a resident, or
to your Spanish assets if
non-resident.
There are some variations
within those taxes depending
on your status, and where
you live for most of the year.
The cadastral value is key
to what you will shell out for
a property, and make sure
that you get hold of it.
FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 31
Check your home insurance
WHETHER you have recently
bought the property
of your dreams in Spain,
or have been a resident
for a long time, have you
ever wondered what your
home insurance policy actually
delivers if you have
a mishap?
Of course hardly anybody
bothers to read a policy because
of the length and
the way it is written, let
alone that it might well be
in Spanish!
What you actually get will
depend on the type of insurance
you have got, but there
are many companies that
offer other services beyond
repairing a broken glass,
within the basic package.
by Alex Trelinski
“Almost all companies are
already going to offer other
services, not directly related
to the insured items, which go
beyond what people might expect”,
according to insurance
company Allianz.
Some of those options
include:
1. DIY service. Some insurance
providers offer a few
hours of a “handyman” a
year, who will come to
your home for free. It can
be between three to five
hours a year and it will
solve your problems if
DIY is not your thing.
2. If you´re kitchen is out
of action say due to a
fire, the cost of restaurant
meals is included in
some policies.
3. If your home has suffered
damages and you have to
move temporarily to another
one, another cover
is the one that covers the
expenses of moving and
storage (furniture storage).
Likewise, if you can't
go back to your home due
to an accident, hotel expenses
will be covered (as
well as maintenance).
4. There´s a power cut and
the food in your fridge
and freezer has been
ruined. In some cases,
the company covers the
amount of food that has
been damaged if it has a
ticket or proof of purchase
(or photographs of them).
5. Many insurance policies
also offer free legal assistance
in case of any problems
with neighbours.
6. Another free service, to
ask for one or several interventions
a year for the
control of pests of cockroaches,
mice, and rats.
These are a few examples,
which means that it is worth
taking some time out to see
what your home insurance
covers and what it does not.
Therefore there should be
no nasty surprises in case
of an accident and you will
know exactly about you can
ask for from your insurance
company.
Pets
Four-legged friends
boost mental health
HERE
TAKING your dog for a
walk has undoubted physical
benefits. However pet
ownership can also boost
people’s mental health,
new research has revealed.
A survey of 2,000 pet owners
has revealed that three
quarters believe their fourlegged
companions improve
their quality of life.
Also, 37 per cent said the
presence of an animal made
them feel calm, and one third
(33 per cent) feel noticeably
less stressed.
Overall, three in owners
claim their animals have
helped to improve their mental
health. And a “significant
proportion” said their pets
provide them with more
emotional support than
friends and family.
Some pet owners revealed
that they had brought their
cats or dogs into their lives
specifically to boost their
mental health or to combat
loneliness.
The figures were revealed
by insurance com-
pany MORE TH>N. Andrew
Moore, its director of pet
claims, said: “Cats and dogs
provide comfort and support
throughout their lives.
“Pets can even sometimes
be better at responding
to human emotions than
other humans, and they
provide unconditional love
and companionship.”
The benefits of spending
time with your pet are clear,
with 69 per cent of those
quizzed stating that doing so
makes them feel happy.
However, MORE TH>N
says it is vital to ensure that
you’re keeping your pet happy
too. And it has put together
a list of fun games people
can play with their dogs.
It says: “Dogs are just like
us – they get bored. Playing
together deepens your bond
while also giving your dog
plenty of physical activity
and mental stimulation.”
Canine fun and games
are five fun games
you might want to try:
1. PUZZLE TOYS
You can use puzzle toys to
stimulate your dog’s mind,
ensuring that they spend at
least part of the day entertained,
even when you’re not
there. Puzzle toys are sturdy
rubber or plastic containers
that you can fill with dry food
or dog biscuits. These games
exercise dog’s problem-solving
skills and once they realise
they can get at the food,
it becomes a fun game with
a worthwhile prize at the end.
2. HUNTING FOR DINNER
Out in the wild, dogs and
wolves spend the majority of
each day in a pack hunting
for food. It’s their natural instinct
but many dogs spend
a lot of time indoors.
You can encourage their
natural scavenging skills by
hiding small treats around
the house and letting your
dog hunt for them. Teaching
them a simple command like
‘find the treat’, tells them that
there is something to hunt
for.
3. INTERACTIVE GAMES
A brief game of tug; a few
rounds of hide and seek or a
quick game of chase or fetch
can help to keep your pet engaged
and active. If you work
outside the home, make it
part of your routine to play
an interactive game before
you leave or as soon as you
get home.
4. TEACH YOUR DOG A
NEW TRICK
Dogs of all ages enjoy learning
new tricks. It can be as
simple as teaching them to
roll over on command or
to offer their paw to ‘shake
hands’. Gently move or show
your dog what to do and always
offer a reward for a trick
well performed. This type of
training will exercise your
dog’s brain and keep them
focused and engaged.
5. PLAN A PLAY DATE
Take your dog to a park
where they can run free and
socialise with other dogs.
This kind of interaction is fun
and socially stimulating and
not only will they get plenty
of exercise, they will feel thoroughly
happy. If possible, try
to arrange for play dates with
your friends and their dogs to
give your canine companion
more time to socialise.
MELANOMA is a serious
type of skin cancer.
It is mainly caused by too
much sun exposure so living
in Spain we are more
at risk. It can also be triggered
by sunlamps and
sun bed treatments.
The risk is increased if you:
• have a fair complexion
• have freckles
• are a blue eyed blonde
• are a redhead
• you have an underlying
pigment disorder
Men are 3 times more likely
to get skin cancer than women
and the risk further increases
with age. Once you've had a
skin cancer, like basal cell carcinoma
and squamous cell carcinoma,
there's a good chance
it will come back or you'll get a
new tumor within a few years,
so you'll need to get your skin
checked regularly to catch
it early.
Melanoma can start in dark
skin tissue, such as a mole
or birthmark, as well as in
normally pigmented skin. For
men, it often shows up on the
head, neck, or between the
shoulders and hips. Women
commonly get it on the arms
and legs. It can also be found
on the palms of your hand, on
the soles of your foot, under a
fingernail or toenail, in mucus
linings (in your mouth, vagina,
or anus, for example), and
even in your eye.
Spread
Malignant melanomas can
spread outwards and downwards
over the lymphatic
system into the surrounding
skin or lymph nodes. Later it
may metastasize into organs
such as the liver, lungs, brain
and bones.
Diagnosis
It is important to know your
own skin and be vigilant of
any changes. It is recommended
to perform a self skin
exam every month, especially
if you have any high risk factors.
This is always best done
with the help of a partner
or friend as it is difficult to
study your own back!
Any changes or appearance
of new moles or blemishes
should be seen by a
doctor without delay.
A normal mole is usually
an evenly colored brown, tan,
or black spot on the skin. It
can be either flat or raised,
round or oval. Moles are generally
less than 6 millimeters
(about ¼ inch) some moles
can be present at birth, but
most appear during childhood
or young adulthood. New
moles that appear later in life
should be checked by a doctor.
Most people have moles, and
almost all moles are harmless.
But it’s important to recognize
changes in a mole such
as in its size, shape, or color
that can suggest a melanoma
may be developing.
The ABCDE rule is another
guide to the usual signs of
melanoma. Be on the lookout
and tell your doctor about
spots that have any of the
following features:
• A is for Asymmetry: One
half of a mole or birthmark
does not match
the other.
• B is for Border: The edges
are irregular, ragged,
notched, or blurred.
• C is for Color: The color
is not the same all over
and may include different
shades of brown
or black, or sometimes
with patches of pink,
red, white, or blue.
• D is for Diameter: The
spot is larger than 6 millimeters
across (about ¼
inch – the size of a pencil
eraser), although melanomas
can sometimes be
smaller than this.
• E is for Evolving: The
mole is changing in size,
shape, or color.
Other warning signs are:
• A sore that doesn’t heal
• Spread of pigment from
the border of a spot into
surrounding skin
• Redness or a new swelling
beyond the border of
the mole
• Change in sensation,
such as itchiness, tenderness,
or pain
• Change in the surface of
a mole – scaliness, oozing,
bleeding, or the appearance
of a lump or bump
If your G.P. is suspicious
of melanoma you will be referred
to a consultant dermatologist
for further investigation.
There are many
different types of biopsy that
may be carried out including:
• Incisional and excisional
biopsy
• Shave biopsy
• Punch biopsy
• Optical biopsy
If it is suspected that the
cancer may have spread,
further tests may be ordered:
• Fine needle aspiration
of lymph nodes adjacent
to the melanoma
• Surgical lymph node
biopsy
• Sentinel lymph node
biopsy
• Imaging tests (MRI,
PET, CT)
Treatment
A treatment plan will be decided
by the dermatologist after
the cancer has been staged.
Treatments may include:
• Surgery
• Cryotherapy
• Radiation
• Chemotherapy
or photochemotherapy
• Laser therapy
• Biologic or
immunotherapy
• Targeted therapy
Summary
• Malignant melanoma is
usually easy to diagnose
• Malignant melanoma is
usually curable if diagnosed
early
• Malignant melanoma
grows faster than other
FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 35
Health&Lifestyle
Getting off the sugar
roller-coaster ride
ARE you stuck on a blood
sugar roller coaster ride –
continually craving sweet
stuffs? If so nutritionist
Nuri Adams Davies
has some tips to help
you escape.
She says the energy rush
that comes from refined white
sugar is “great if you need to
run away from a sabre-tooth
tiger” but can pose problems
if you’re not physically active.
Nuri adds: “When your energy
is getting low, your body
sends signals to your brain
that it needs sugar - this is
one reason why people crave
sweets.
“If you do reach for that
donut, the white flour and
sugar break down quickly
into easily accessible energy,
and you feel better. The sugar
gets into the bloodstream,
where it triggers cells in the
pancreas to release insulin.
“The insulin helps put
sugar into the body cells -
especially liver cells - where
it is stored as fat. When a
large amount of sugar leaves
Nuri Adams Davies
the blood, you ‘crash’ and
crave more donuts.”
Nuri says the insulin
process is supposed to keep
blood sugar within a healthy
range. But when the body
is “regularly bombarded” by
high amounts of sugar, and
requires large amounts of
insulin to compensate, it can
present problems:
• If there is constantly a
high need for insulin, the
body can become insulin-resistant
(think type
2 diabetes)
• When the body is constantly
storing sugar as
fat, people not only gain
weight, but the extra
fat impacts organ function
- and in the liver
this can be particularly
dangerous
• Having excess amounts of
glucose in the bloodstream
causes stress on the body.
When we have low blood
sugar, our adrenal hormones
are called on to
release cortisol, which is
a “hormone wearing blinkers”.
It makes us hungry
for sweet, high-calorie
foods that will give us instant
energy, keeping us
on a vicious cycle. Cortisol
also suppresses the
immune system
Nuri adds that the sweet
stuff also compromises digestion,
and paves the way
for cardiovascular problems
and fertility issues.
And she says that white table
sugar, brown sugar, cane
sugar and corn syrup offer
“no health benefits” at all.
However, she adds: “Let’s
be realistic for a minute -
it’s almost impossible and,
let’s face it, not much fun,
to swear that you’ll swear
off sugar forever and ever,
amen.
“So how much sugar
should people be eating?
Well, consider saving sugary
treats for special occasions
like birthday parties and festive
celebrations, and leave
it out of the day-to-day.”
If you find that the cravings
are really getting to you,
Nuri has a few handy tips:
1. Remember that those
cravings will naturally
die down in a few days to
one week.
2. Never go hungry - snack
often and make sure to
include enough healthy
fats and proteins in your
meals - such as avocado,
butter or ghee, olive
oil, tahini or hummus,
nuts and seeds, nut butters,
lean meats, eggs,
and seafood - especially
wild salmon.
3. Drink plenty of pure water,
1-2 litres per day.
4. Eat at least 1-2 servings
of greens per day. Chard,
spinach, collard greens
or spring greens, beet
tops, broccoli and kale are
some good examples.
5. Make time in for relaxation,
be it yoga, tai chi or
qi gong, meditation, relaxing
Epsom salt baths, or
even a 30-minute stroll in a
natural area.
6. Get out in the sunshine
for some vitamin D
if possible.
adventure, with a zip
wire experience, mountain
biking and rainforest
trails; or discover hidden
waterfalls and plunge in
the fresh water pools.
And, for coastal adventures,
there’s coastal cruises,
paddleboarding and kayaking,
plus the chance to swim
in the gin-clear waters of
one of the Caribbean’s best
dive locations.
Walk on water at
Nylon Pool
The Nylon Pool sandbank is
one of Tobago’s most visited
attractions. A gleaming offshore
coralline sandbar that
has formed a spectacular
metre-deep pool in the middle
of the ocean, the Nylon
Pool name comes from Princess
Margaret, who spent
her honeymoon on the island
and reportedly said the water
was ‘as clear as her nylon
stockings’.
The sandbar is accessed
by boat from Pigeon Point,
Tobago’s most beautiful
beach, home to soft, white
sand, picturesque palm trees
and turquoise waters.
Swim with the world’s
biggest turtles
Swimming with turtles is
a real bucket list experience
– but the sheer size of
swimming alongside one of
Tobago’s giant leatherbacks,
which can grow up to 500kg
and more than two metres in
length – makes the underwater
encounter even more
special.
Equally special is witnessing
the hatchlings emerge
from the sand and head towards
the sea – and Tobago
is one of the few places in the
world where turtles hatch.
Tropical rainforest
encounter
Tobago’s mountainous backbone
is a naturalist’s heaven
offering hike and mountain
bike trails that meander
through the tropical rainforest
landscape.
Tobago’s Main Ridge Forest
Reserve (the oldest Rainforest
in the Western Hemisphere)
is easily accessible to visitors
who can marvel at the tropical
birds and butterflies and
watch the scuttling land crabs
and trapdoor spiders at work.
There’s yet more to explore
in Trinidad – where the is-
land’s north side is dominated
by a chain of mountains called
the Northern Range which
rise over 900 metres and are
covered in thick rain forest.
Armadillos, agouti, opossums
and ant eaters rustle
through the undergrowth.
The golden tree frog lives
in the foggy summit area.
It is only found here and in
Venezuela.
Much more frequently spotted
are 17 indigenous humming
birds. The shimmering
beings are the only birds
which can fly backwards.
Experts at the Asa Wright
Nature Centre can explain
why and much more about
the typical island flora and
fauna during a guided hike.
Taste Caribbean
flavours from a seafacing
treehouse
Having changed hands more
than 30 times, Trinidad and
Tobago’s food culture is one
of the most diverse of the
Caribbean, featuring an
amazing melting pot of influences,
with Caribbean,
African, Spanish, Portuguese,
British and Indian
flavours all present. It’s a
busy mix of curry, crab and
dumplings, pigeon peas and
macaroni pie.
While in Trinidad, a
spicy-filled roti is a must, or
how about Shark and Bake
hailed by Anthony Bourdain
as the best fish sandwich
in the world – Shark
and Bake is has a cult-like
following on Trinidad’s
Maracas Beach. This substantial
fried shark (now
Lion Fish) snack is served
in split ‘bake’ or roll - then
topped with salad and
sauces of tamarind, chadon
beni, garlic and hot pepper.
Delicious!
FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019 37
Miami & Orlanda, USA
by Yvonne Hollywood,
Worldwide Horizons
es, all of which have different
key features, many of
which have been used in the
hundreds of films and TV Series
that have been shot here
over the years.
Who can forget Miami
Vice when it hit the screens
in the 80s, showing visions of
beaches that us Brits could
only dream about whilst
paddling in the Atlantic….
Perhaps more iconic than
that show, Miami is also
known for the close-by Everglades,
the tropical wetlands
that cover the area to the
Southwest of Miami. Popular
for visitors, you can get
guided tours to navigate the
wide river mangrove swamp
and get up close and personal
(but not too close!) with the
crocodiles and aligators who
live there – the only place
in the world where they live
side by side. It may go without
saying but… don’t dip
your fingers in the water!
Conveniently located close
to Orlando, Miami is more
economic and direct to get
to from Spain than the other
airports. Shuttles between
Miami and Fort Lauderdale
and Orlando are easy
to organise, meaning that if
Disney is your Destination,
Miami is a viable arrival
point. Whilst many opt to
stay in Disney resorts themselves,
you can find many
self-catering and inexpensive
resorts to stay within
close reach of the parks. International
Drive has good
connections with the main
Disney parks and a shuttle
bus runs frequently.
Prices are good as they
want to attract you away
from the expensive Disney
options, so for a family, this
is a great place to consider
staying. You can purchase
Multi-tickets to all Disney
Parques as well as day tick-
SPREAD over an area of
150m 2 , Miami is the 6th
most populated city in the
USA. Inhabited by a native
tribe around 2000 years
before contact was made
by Europeans, it is believed
that the first inhabitants
moved en masse to
Cuba in the mid 1700s.
It is known as the only
major city to be founded by
a woman, the owner of the
land at that time. Having
convinced a railway tycoon
to invest in the area and to
extend a train line to the
region, Miami was officially
incorporated as a city in
July 1896.
From a population then
of about 300 people, the city
has grown out of all recognition
with its original roots.
It is now home to major
national and international
company headquarters, one
of the largest concentrations
of international banks and
of course, its seaport is literally
the busiest in the world,
calling itself the Cruise Capital
of the World.
Over 20 different cruise
companies use Miami as one
of their ports, for over 60 of
the ships. That might not
sound like a lot, but on any
given ship there can be up
to almost 6000 passengers.
This is a huge influx to the
city and to the infrastructure
of Miami on a daily
basis, being one of the mainstays
of the tourism industry
that plays such a major
part in the city.
But it’s not just overnights
pre and post cruises that
draw people to this city. Miami
is famous for its beachets
which combine the best
of them.
Don’t forget to look in on
Universal Studios and for
a little bit of magic… check
out the Harry Potter theme
park and sup on a Wizard’s
Brew or Dragon’s Scale Beer
– both uniquely created for
Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley,
which are the two main
areas of the park.
Flights can be booked to
Miami from Alicante with
connection in Madrid. Remember,
as with all holidays
to the USA, you need
to have your visa obtained in
advance to ensure you enjoy
your holiday!
Motoring
The new Škoda Octavia
EVEN better, more spacious,
safer, more connected
and more emotive
than ever: with the launch
of the fourth generation of
its bestseller, ŠKODA has
reached new dimensions.
The heart and engine of
the ŠKODA brand is longer
and wider than its predecessor,
has an even larger boot
and is even more emotive
thanks to the new ŠKODA
design language.
The new interior concept
combines an excellent
amount of space and outstanding
functionality with
high-quality materials and
clever details. Innovative connectivity
and new assistance
systems raise comfort and
safety to an even higher level.
Sixty years after production
of the OCTAVIA started
in 1959, ŠKODA is now unveiling
the best model yet
since its re-launch in 1996.
The
fourth-generation
OCTAVIA will continue to
be the brand’s heart and engine
as well as its top volume
model.
With more than 6.5 million
units produced, it is the
bestselling ŠKODA ever and
has been a real icon for many
years, both in its Czech home
country as well as in numerous
other markets around
the world. The reasons for
this are obvious: it features
a modern design and modern
technology, it is efficient,
extremely practical and
high-quality; it offers exceptional
amounts of space and
superior value for money.
Bigger and even
more attractive
At a length of 4,689 mm, the
hatchback is 19 mm and the
COMBI 22 mm longer than
the third-generation model.
Its width has increased by
15 mm.
The COMBI’s boot capacity,
which is the largest in
the segment, has increased
by 30 l to 640 l. The hatchback
has a capacity of 600 l –
10 l more than the previous
generation.
The new front apron and
the razor-sharp, narrower,
new headlights are a visual
delight and feature LED
technology for low beam, high
beam and daytime running
lights as standard.
The tail lights, brake lights
and fog lights make use of
LED technology as well.
The newly designed, shallow
roof rails emphasise the
elongated silhouette of the
OCTAVIA COMBI, while the
hatchback looks almost like
a coupé.
Alloy wheels measuring
up to 19 inches lend all of the
model variants a powerful
appearance.
Crystal Black, Lava Blue
and Titanium Blue have
been newly added to the
range of paint finishes; a
Chrome and a Dynamic
package are optional extras.
New interior concept
and a multi-level
dashboard
In the newly designed interior,
the OCTAVIA offers
a new two-spoke steering
wheel, which can be heated
as an option and – if ordered
as a multifunction variant
– comes with new control
buttons and knurled scroll
wheels, allowing drivers to
operate a total of 14 different
functions without removing
their hands.
The dashboard, which has
also been redesigned, is modular
and has been arranged
in different levels, featuring
a large, free-standing central
display.
The centre console is elegant,
uncluttered and
adorned with chrome details
– as are the new door trims
and handles.
New and soft-touch materials
lend the interior a premium
look, while the new LED
ambient lighting provides a
special visual touch for the
front doors and dashboard by
indirectly illuminating them
in a choice of ten different colours
– even in a variety of colours
if desired. Coordinated
lighting scenarios can also
be selected.
Head-up display
making its debut
and particularly
back-friendly Ergo
seats
Optional, particularly backfriendly
Ergo seats, which
among other things offer an
electric massage function,
are available for the first
time in a ŠKODA.
In the top version, they
can also be ventilated and
bear the seal of approval of
the German Campaign for
Healthier Backs.
The optional head-up display
is another first for a
ŠKODA. It projects the most
important information such
as speed, navigation, detected
traffic signs and activated
driver assistance systems
directly onto the – optionally
heated – windscreen.
The 4.2-inch, multifunction
Maxi DOT 16-colour
display comes as standard.
Tri-zone Climatronic makes
its debut in the OCTAVIA.
Using the optional keyless
vehicle entry system (KES-
SY), now any one of the car’s
four doors can be opened
first.
The standard equipment
also includes electric side
windows and an electromechanical
parking brake.
The ŠKODA OCTAVIA is
now also available with acoustic
side windows at the front,
which reduce road noise in
the cabin even further.

Back In Britain
PENNY WELL SPENT
PUMELLED
PORSCHE
A 75-YEAR-OLD disabled man was
“lucky not to have been killed”
when he got up to use the toilet
moments before a car crashed into
his living room.
Stan Miller had been watching television
on Monday night in his bungalow
in Arbury, Cambridge, when
the Vauxhall Corsa smashed through
the wall.
“If I hadn’t got up for the loo I don’t
know if I’d be here, but I am just glad
the driver was not hurt,” he said.
Police said the 32-year-old male
driver was three times over the drinkdrive
limit.
It careered through the wooden
fence, across the small drive, smashed
through the bungalow’s front window
and wall and ended up embedded in
Mr Miller’s living room.
It left a scene of devastation, with
bricks, glass and rubble strewn across
the floor, however Mr Miller, who has
lived there for more than 20 years,
refused to leave his home and stayed
the night after police and structural
experts had checked the property.
Let´s hope the drunken driver pays
for all the repairs.
NO CHIPS TODAY
A WOULD-BE owner smashed up a rare
Porsche on a test drive just minutes from a
Cardiff area showroom.
The Porsche 911 GT2 – which reaches speeds of
211mph – is one of only 1,000 in the world.
But the model suffered serious damage to its
front wing and wheels when it was taken out for
a spin.
The car, which is worth £207,000, was involved
in a five-vehicle pile-up in Penarth, near Cardiff,
and just a mile away from the Porche dealership.
A motorist reported that the Porche driver
claimed that the brakes had failed, whilst the
dealer has stayed well and truly quiet.
PARENTS have branded super-
market Sainsbury’s ‘killjoys’ after
it took normal chips off of
its children’s menu.
The options of chicken nuggets,
sausage or ‘omega-3 fish fingers’
now only come with mash, half a
jacket potato or sweet potato fries.
Shoppers, who suspect the
supermarket of making the decision
on health grounds, say
they feel like they are being told
what they can and can’t give
their youngsters.
The children’s menu in Sainsbury’s
cafes now has five main options;
nuggets, fish fingers, sau-
sage or veggie sausage, bolognese
or mac and cheese.
Parents who go to the cafe for a
treat say they feel they are being
patronised by the limited choice.
One mother, from West Yorkshire,
told The Sun: ‘It’s a farce
because chips are on the adults’
menu. When I pointed this out
I was told kids can’t eat chips at
Sainsbury’s.”
Parents who really want chips
can get a side dish from the adults’
menu, and as British kids get fatter,
I don´t see what Sainsbury´s
is doing wrong as it makes an important
health statement!
Drop Quotes are similar to cryptograms,
in that the goal is for the solver to
uncover a hidden quote. A black-andwhite
crossword-style grid is set up for
each quote, with a number of letters
“hovering” above each column. Your task
is to “drop” each of those letters into
the appropriate square in each column,
until the entire quote is revealed. All
punctuation (commas, periods, dashes,
etc.) has been removed. Good luck!
John
James
Randall
Trophy
MONTGO Golf Society played a Stableford
competition for the James Randall
Trophy on 8th November. The sponsors
were Marion and Neil Carter.
There was a very cold wind at Oliva
Nova today and this resulted in generally
low scores.
The winner was John Ross, with 34 points
off 26.8, second was Richard Fox, with 32
points off 18.0, beating Celia Cronin, also
with 32 points off 16.9.
There were three nearest the pins and
these were won by Alan Skinner on the third,
with 1.16m, Gordon Gleeson on the 16th,
with 3.1m and 2nd shot on the 18th was Brian
Redfern, with 3.45m.
There was one tow toady and a coveted
Montgo Ball was won by Hans Duner.
There was one guest, Dirk Knape.
Next week is a Texas Scramble, sponsored
by Sally and Arthur Burrowes.
The Marina Alta Golf Society
Keith Cottrell, Danny Herron, Keith Sindon, Dave Reid, Pete Gardiner
THE Marina Alta Golf Society’s
game, on Monday
11th November 2019,
saw 14 members and just
the one guest tee off on a
slightly cooler and breezier
day than of late, but it
was dry and the day soon
warmed up and the wind
dropped as the players
engaged in an individual
Stroke Play game at the
Oliva Nova course, which
was in fine condition.
Now stroke play is considered
the benchmark
that every golfer’s game is
gauged at, with the players
having to complete each
hole regardless of the number
of strokes they play. It
can be mind blowing to see
10’s on your card, where
as in a Stableford game
there would just be a blank
space.
When the players were
back at the club house,
and the score cards accounted
for, the scores were
as follows.
In first place, with a
net score of 72, was Keith
Cottrell, playing off a 21
handicap.
In second place, with
a net score of 73, off a 13
handicap, was Dave Reid.
(He also had the lowest
gross score of 86).
In third place was Capt
Peter Gardiner, with a net
of 74, off a 22 handicap.
Worthy mention was our
guest today, Anne Woodward,
who was in fourth
place (on countback), with a
net of 78, off a 39 handicap.
There were no two’s today
and the NTP winners
were: hole five, in two shots,
Keith Cottrell, hole 16
Keith Sinden and hole 18,
in 2 shots, Danny Herron.
Well done to all.
As mentioned, it can be
alarming to see a 10 on
your score card while playing
stroke play, to see three
of them on the front nine
holes must be downright
(“that’s it I’m tearing up my
card and going in,” running
through your mind).
One of the players today,
whose first name is
the same as Superman,
did just that and did think
just that, but played on.
Result his play got better,
and he ended the round by
birdying the last hole. The
smile on his face was worth
all the effort, so well done
Superman 2.
The Marina Alta Golf Society
plays every Monday
at the Oliva Nova course.
If you want to join this
friendly group of golfers as
a guest, then a warm welcome
will be waiting for
you.
In Division 2, the winners
WEEK 12
A FULL Premier League
at the weekend gave the
Alfaz Fantasy Football
League a total of 28 goals,
four clean sheets, 38 yellow
cards and one red
one, which was Watford’s
Kabasele who received his
marching orders from Referee
Andre Marriner, in the
Friday Night game.
The pantomine seaon
has started early with VAR
taking centre stage by not
awarding penalties and disallowing
perfectly good goals.
I said before the season
started there would be a lot
of controversy and there certainly
is. Personally, I would
rather go back to the referees
making the decisions because
nine times out of ten
VAR goes with the referee’s
anyway (rant over)!
Chris’s team, Promotion
Again, became the sixth side
to reach the top of the Alfaz
ALFAZ FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Fantasy Football League
this season, when they took
over from Kapur’s team, Napali
Eleven, who had led the
league for the last five weeks.
Martin’s Marauders moved
into second place and are 11
points behind the leaders.
Bill’s East Fifers moved
up three places to fourth
and have been making good
progress in the last few
weeks.
Down at the very foot of
the table, Lyn’s Handbrake
City remain over the trap
door and are now six points
away from Romeo’s team,
My Dad Supports Liverpool.
We have a new leader at
the top of our Mark Carter
Ladies Section, where Annette’s
team, Hairnette, top
scored in this Division with
41 points, which helped
them replace Isobel’s Bluebells
at the summit. Her
three Leicester players -
Pereira, Maddison and the
inform Jamie Vardy - clocked
up 23 points of her tally.
At the other end, Lyn’s
Handbrake City are going
for a double Wooden Spoon
as they trail Gil’s Kippax by
14 points.
Luca’s Lucky Red F.C. are
taking a firm grip at the top
of our Junior League as they
have opened up a 22 point
gap over second placed Harley’s
Ginger Ninjar.
It’s a bit early to be handing
out the Wooden Spoons,
but it’s fair to say that Romeo’s
My Dad Supports
Liverpool is odds-on to finish
bottom of the section as
they are now a massive 55
points adrift of William &
Henry Two.
There is no change at the
top of our Champion of Champions
League as Martin’s
Marauders have increased
their advantage at the top
over Wade’s Alli Barber to 20
points.
Max & Paddy and Pauline’s
Vodka Army are in
third and fourth place, then
comes Bob’s Real Mayid.
Gil’s Kippax have been at
the bottom for the last eight
weeks, but things could
change as they are now
within two points of Luna’s
Liver Birds.
Chris’s Promotion Again
took over the number one
spot in our Across the Costa’s
Golden Boot League.
They have a single point
lead over last weeks frontrunner
Martin’s Marauders.
Bill’s East Fifers continued
their good run of form
by moving up three places to
third.
Terry’s team, Could it be
this Year, are still holding
everybody else up at the bottom
and are still five points
behind Mark’s Inter Rubber.
We have two more teams
to go into the hat for our
Monthly Wine Draw and
they are our top scoring
team, which was Chris’s Promotion
Again, with 45 points
and our lowest scoring team,
which was Treble Without
Applause, who only managed
a single point.
The October winner was
Eric’s City Slickers (well it
was my birthday last month!)
Manager of the Month for
November is being kindly
sponsored by Gary and Nikki
at the Drunken Duck, in
Alfaz, who provide a good
old English breakfast and a
super Sunday roast, as well
as serving up other excellent
homemade English dishes.
With two weeks gone, two
points seperate the top three.
Currently, Promotion Again
have a fragile one point lead
over Peaky Blinders, who also
have a one point advantage
over Alli Barber.
Just below the top three
are East Fifers, Martin’s Marauders
and Realco A Team,
all in with a chance of winning
this super meal for two
at the Drunken Duck.
The two replays in our
K.O. Cup took place last
weekend, which saw City
Link beat Unbeleivable Tekkers
15-8. The other replay
was won by Kerry’s Penfold
Puffins, who beat fellow lady
manager Rachel’s team,
Blue Murder, 15-7.
The Draw for the next round
will soon be up on our website.
WARNING: International
break ahead!

46 FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019
www.weekender.news
Sports & Local News
Major rugby coup
A PREMIER International
rugby tournament for
young players is coming
to the Costa Blanca
next autumn.
The 13th staging of the
World Rugby Under 20 Trophy
will be held at Villajoyosa’s
Campo de El Pantano
between September 14th and
September 27th, with eight
teams taking part.
It will be the first time
that Spain and the Federación
Española de Rugby
(FER) will organise
the tournament.
The World Rugby U20 Trophy
has provided a platform
for the future stars of the
game to shine since its introduction
in 2008, with almost
500 players having graduated
to go on to play test rugby.
Hosts Spain will be joined
by Scotland, who were relegated
from the U20 Championship
earlier this year
after finishing 12th, with
the remaining six places
determined by regional
qualification tournaments.
A real
issue
REAL Madrid have written
to Spain´s football federation
(RFEF) to oppose La
Liga´s plans to play Villarreal's
home match with
Atletico Madrid in Miami
next month.
In the letter, Real complained
that playing the
proposed match 'affects the
integrity and fairness of
the competition'.
La Liga signed a 15-year
deal with entertainment
company Relevent last year
to promote Spanish soccer
in North America, which included
hosting one game per
season stateside.
Its plan to play Girona's
match with Barcelona in Miami
last January fell through
after Barca withdrew from
the proposal, citing a lack of
institutional support.
Yet the league has applied
by Alex Trelinski
Spain have only competed
in the tournament once,
when in 2016 when they suffered
a heart-breaking 38-32
loss in sudden-death extratime
to Samoa in the final.
by Alex Trelinski
to hold the December 6th
game between Villarreal and
Atletico in Miami, although
Eight members of that
squad have since graduated
to play test rugby for
Los Leones.
The winner of the U20
Trophy will be promoted to
the World Rugby U20 Championship
in 2021, replacing
the team finishing bottom
of the 2020 edition in Italy
next June.
World Rugby Chairman
Sir Bill Beaumont said: “We
are delighted that Spain will
organise the Trophy. I know
that they will be exceptional
hosts and provide the teams
with a superb environment
to perform.”
FER President Alfonso
Feijoo said: “It is a great honour
for the Federación Española
de Rugby to host one of
the main global tournaments
organised by World Rugby in
the Comunidad Valenciana.”
“We are confident its organisation
will be a success,
bringing momentum to accelerate
Spanish rugby’s development,
especially in the
Valencia region.”
RFEF president Luis Rubiales
has said his organisation,
which would have to agree to
the move, continues to oppose
playing league games abroad.
Six-way victory
ENGLAND'S Tyrrell Hatton
won the Turkish Open at
the fourth extra hole last
Sunday following a dramatic
six-man play-off.
Ryder Cup player Hatton,
28, claimed the title after
Austria's Matthias Schwab
missed a short par putt.
They finished under floodlights
after six players had
tied on 20 under par to make
it the first six-man play-off
on the European Tour in
16 years.
It was Hatton's fourth
by Alex Trelinski
European Tour title and his
first since winning the Italian
Open in October 2017.
He takes a first prize of
nearly two million euros
and jumps up to sixth in
the Race to Dubai standings
with only two events of the
season remaining.
He has also made sure of
finishing the year inside the
world's top 50, which will
guarantee his invitation for
the US Masters in April.
Valencia finale
THE curtain come down by Alex Trelinski
team points out of an overall
on the 2019 MotoGP season
401 gained!
this Sunday, with a
treat for local bike fans
courtesy of the Valencia
GP at the Circuit Ricardo
Tormo.
teams’ championship, which
Ducati leads by two points
over Repsol Honda.
On the way to his sixth
MotoGP title in seven years,
There will be plenty of
Spaniards to try and make
sure that Marquez does not
win on home turf, namely
Alex Vins and Maverick
Spain´s Marc Marquez Marquez broke Jorge Lorenzo’s
Vinales, both of whom of
and Honda have wrapped up
the riders’ and manufacturers’
titles respectively, but
one still remains active – the
record of points over
18 races, and carried Honda
to the constructors’ crown
with his personal tally of 395
will be fighting it out to finish
third in the riders´ title
chase behind second-placed
Italian, Andrea Dovizioso.
Brazilian race day
THE Brazilian Grand Prix
at Interlagos on Sunday
will mark the penultimate
race of the 2019 Formula
One season.
Britain’s Lewis Hamilton
has already wrapped up a
sixth world title with his
Mercedes team sealing the
constructors' championship
by Alex Trelinski
to boot but there is plenty
left to race for - especially
at Ferrari.
Sebastian Vettel will be
hoping for a big performance
to close the 19-point gap in the
drivers' standings on younger
teammate Charles Leclerce.
In a boost for Vettel,
Leclerc faces a 10-place grid
penalty after exceeding the
permitted number of car
parts this season.
Elsewhere, Alex Albon will
be looking to impress again
after Red Bull announced he
has been handed an extended
contract for the 2020 season.
End of the road
by Alex Trelinski
DAVID Villa says he will
retire from Japanese club
Vissel Kobe next year, ending
the career of Spain’s
top international scorer.
The 37-year-old Villa, who
played for Barcelona and Valencia
in La Liga, joined Kobe
last December, said he plans
to retire after the season ends
in January.
“It’s better to leave football
before football leaves me.
I’ve been thinking for several
years — when you reach
33, 34 or 35 — the moment
can arrive at any time in a
game, in training, or with an
injury,” he said.
The ex-Manchester City
striker scored 59 goals in 98
appearances for Spain from
2004-17, including five goals
at the 2010 World Cup as
Spain won the title for the
first time.

48 FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2019
Sport
MADRID HOSTS
TENNIS TREAT
MADRID’S Caja Mágica
will host a totally revamped
Davis Cup from
this Monday, as the 18 top
countries in the world, including
Great Britain, will
compete with the goal of
lifting the premier men’s
by Alex Trelinski
tennis team trophy.
The countries are divided
into six groups of three, and
will play first in a group
stage.
The top team in each group
and the best second-placed
teams will then qualify for
the quarter-finals.
Each tie between the
teams will consist of two singles
and one doubles contest,
all of which will be over the
best of three sets.
The semis will be a week
on Saturday with the final
on Sunday November 24th.
Andy Murray will represent
Great Britain for the
first time since 2016, with
captain Leon Smith naming
Dan Evans and Kyle
Edmund as his other nominated
singles players, plus
doubles pair Jamie Murray
and Neal Skupski.
Britain, who won the
Davis Cup in 2015, face
the Netherlands and Kazakhstan
in their group
matches next Wednesday
and Thursday.
It’s a much easier group
for Great Britain, compared
to what the home favourites
Spain will face, as they
have Russia and Croatia as
their opponents.
