A SURVEY by insurer Direct
Line in the UK has found
that about one in 25 people
in the country are currently
living in a property with an
ex-spouse or partner.
The phone survey of several
thousand people found
that one in six people asked
had been through this at
some stage in their life.
Financial pressures are
by far the main reason with
AN estimated two thirds of
people in Spain live in communal
apartment blocks,
something that most are
generally happy with, appreciating
the cost, modernity
and convenience that
goes with this.
However there is one major
issue, community fees and in
particular unexpected ones.
While standard community
fees are part and parcel
of high rise living, paying for
unexpected issues such as
external repairs or a leaky
roof can cause real financial
issues for some people.
If they can’t pay, this in
turn causes friction with
near neighbours.
A major bone of contention
is replacing or installing
lifts, which can often
cost about €100,000, maybe
€10,000 an apartment.
For the elderly or infirm
they are a lifeline to the
outside world while a young
couple sharing a flat, for example,
could probably think
of things they would rather
be spending €10,000 on – assuming
they have that kind
of money in the first place.
Good communication and
regular community meetings
are key to avoid a fallout
among neighbours who,
at the end of the day, have
to live together in the same
building.
by Simon Russell
a “clean break” not being as
simple as it sounds for many,
especially where a mortgage
is involved. The average
time between a separation
and one or both people moving
out Is four months.
The insurer said that
claims for breakages in the
home rose dramatically after
a break-up, indicating that
DRAGADOS, the company
that has taken over responsibility
for Benidorm’s iconic
but controversial Intempo
building has said that
the construction works are
set to resume this month.
The original owners Olga
Urbana declared bankruptcy
in 2014 and the skyscraper
ended up in the hands of the
Sareb “bad bank” before being
sold to a multi-national
investment firm two years
ago. The Intempo is Europe’s
tallest residential building
at 200 metres and the 47
floors will have a total of 256
apartments.
Luxury touches include an
infinity pool, spa, hot tubs,
children’s area and a rooftop
the situation is far from ideal
for all parties concerned.
The most popular item
broken was a laptop or
similar gadget, followed by,
despite the obvious cliché,
crockery and tableware.
Suspected theft of personal
goods and cash by partners
was also reported in a
number of cases, over half
those surveyed, usually at
the point of moving out.
Hidden cost of high rise living
Mega project resumes
by Simon Russell
with spectacular views.
Properties from the 38th
to 45th floor will be in the
unique diamond structure
that can be seen from almost
all points of the resort.
The top two floors are being
set aside for communal
use. Dragados has said that
the work is scheduled to be
finished by the first half of
2021.
