semifinalists, five
were from the West
County area.
In alphabetic
order, they are Adina
Cazacu-De Luca [John
Burroughs School],
Kenyon Hill [Whitfield
School], Kamala Hill
Madireddi [John Burroughs],
Rahul Suresh Kanna [Lafayette
High] and Kailin Zhang [Marquette High].
After review by the Program Reading
Committee, 250 regional finalists will
advance in January 2020. From those
applicants, 150 will become Coca-Cola
Scholars.
Scholars are selected from across the
country based on academic excellence,
leadership, and service demonstrated in
school and community activities.
Chesterfield resident receives
legacy scholarship
Chesterfield resident Pooja Marwah was
surprised by Chancellor Dr. Angie Besendorfer
with a $2,000 Legacy scholarship
to WGU Missouri [Western Governors
University]. WGU Missouri was established
in 2013 as a partnership between the
Utah-based WGU and the state of Missouri.
The scholarship is awarded to new WGU
students and returning graduates who are
either a child or spouse of a WGU alum.
Marwah’s husband, Darshit, graduated
from WGU Missouri in 2019 with a master
of science in data analytics, which she
plans to pursue as well.
Bringing Blues to STEM lessons
Two St. Louis Blues players and team
mascot Louie brought a STEM lesson to
Parkway Northeast Middle students with a
game of hockey.
Blues players Robert Bortuzzo and
Zach Sanford visited the school with an
assist from the Hockey Scholar course.
The Future Goals: Hockey Scholar program
reinforces math and science concepts
by highlighting their real-world applications
in the sport of hockey.
Hands-on clinic drills throughout the
day were also provided by the Street Blues,
a free ball hockey program initiated by the
Blues aimed toward getting elementary
and middle school-aged children interested
in the game of hockey. This program offers
area schools a PE class curriculum and
after-school activity that is a fast-paced
alternative to traditional PE class units.
During the visit to Northeast Middle,
the players also visited the computer lab
to watch students engage in further STEM
lessons.
