FACEBOOK.COM/WESTNEWSMAGAZINE WESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM Local student wins entrepreneurial essay contest By JESSICA MESZAROS During the Greater St. Charles Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Nov. 20, the Duree Center awarded one high school student $500 for best answering the question: “Why is an entrepreneurial mindset critical to the success of my generation?” To celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week 2019, the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship hosted a high school student essay contest with the winner receiving $500. After reviewing over 100 essays submitted by local students, Khloe M. Carver was named the winner of the 2019 High School Student Essay Contest. Khloe is a student at St. Charles High and participates in the St. Charles County Center for Advanced Professional Studies [CAPS] Entrepreneurship Strand. Carver was announced as the essay contest winner at the Greater St. Charles Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Nov. 20. She was joined by her mother, Ramona Johnson, and her grandfather, Rodney Johnson. The goal of the Duree Center for Entrepreneurship, based out of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, is to provide opportunities for students and other individuals to pursue DISPENSARY, from page 22 Bartoni [Ward 2] asked City Attorney John Young. Young said the question would require additional research. While the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has published phone numbers and email addresses for inquiries, a procedure for public input on a specific license applicant is not clear. Niles Stephens [Ward 8] cast the lone dissenting vote against the resolution. “We’re going to tell [Ellisville] they shouldn’t have done this. Which is essentially what Wildwood would be doing,” Stephens said. “So I don’t [see] any need for it.” The resolution is somewhat unprecedented in terms of the history of Wildwood government. There have been similar examples, including the “Better Together” opposition earlier this year, where the council has expressed support or disagreement with the actions of other governing bodies like St. Louis County and the state of Missouri. But the resolution challenging the zoning decision of a neighboring community could be a first. entrepreneurial opportunities across the St. Louis region. The essay contest was sponsored in part by West Newsmagazine and Mid Rivers Newsmagazine. “Ellisville certainly has the right to police their own city. But they are infringing on, I think, the concerns of citizens of Wildwood,” councilmember Dave Bertolino [Ward 5] said. The Ellisville City Council’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 4. In a follow-up with West Newsmagazine, Ellisville Mayor Mike Roemerman said the walking distance from the potential facility to the school boundary via demarcation points that can be legally traveled by foot is over 1,600 feet. “The Wildwood City Council pigeonholed medical marijuana down in Chesterfield Valley and effectively zoned it out of their city,” Roemerman said. “I believe they have put themselves in the crosshairs of a lawsuit for violating the Missouri Constitution by not providing access even though 63% of their residents voted in favor of the amendment. I do not believe they are acting in the interests of their citizens as a whole but for the fears of a few.” Roemerman added that Ellisville has also collaborated with the Rockwood Drug- Free Coalition regarding recommendations moving forward.
