4 I OPINION I December 4, 2019 WEST NEWSMAGAZINE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR @WESTNEWSMAG WESTNEWSMAGAZINE.COM Regarding Walter Williams Mr. Williams must be speaking for himself and fanatical believers when he says “we have become an immoral people” [Nov. 6]. For I can assure him that it is not the secular that are destroying America. It is the fervently religious that have eschewed the actual teachings of Jesus and chosen to exalt Trump as a savior. These are the true dangers to America’s morality. The people that post sanctimonious Bible quotes on Facebook but turn a blind eye to when our President mocked a disabled reporter, or discussed watching teenage pageant contestants change backstage. These are the people that are causing the rot in America, and they generally call themselves Christians. I do not include all, or most Christians, but enough of them that the label of Christian no longer means what it used to. The “Christians” that applauded LGBTQ protections being stripped and rape victims conceivably being forced to carry a pregnancy to term. These are the Christians that are turning youth away from Christianity because they have become intolerant to anyone different and [are] willing to sacrifice the teachings of the Bible in their pursuit of a few key political issues. For Mr. Williams to even suggest that secular people are causing the ills of America is exactly the type of nonsensical smugness that turns people away from Christianity. Mr. Williams has proven himself to be a pawn in the Christian money making machine that knows victimhood and a perceived threat on Christianity is good for business. What irony that Professor Williams would lecture on the moral decline of the U.S. while quoting William Barr. Barr, who has abused his position and chosen to gallivant across the world; seeking to undermine U.S. Intelligence agencies, while flouting ethical standards all in the name of unfounded conspiracy theories born from the depths of 4chan. Next time Williams should consider quoting Putin to make the trolling a little less obvious. Sara Sullivan Responding to ‘In regard to Walter. E. Williams’ I offer a comment on what writer Bryce Frazier wrote in the Nov. 13 edition: Yes, Walter Williams is a “conservative” and I am very thankful to West Newsmagazine for making him their page three feature columnist. Mr. Frazier thinks that West Newsmagazine [a weekly newspaper] should be more ‘balanced’ and ‘impartial’ in its format. Here’s what might sway West Newsmagazine to change its format: If the extremely liberal and totally unfair and unbalanced St. Louis Post-Dispatch (the only daily paper we have here)…would change and just ‘try’ to be more fair and balanced [versus] so totally biased towards Democrats….then we might see West Newsmagazine change too. Don’t hold your breath … it won’t happen … the Post- Dispatch will never change! Thank you [West Newsmagazine] for being a “conservative” point of view! Gary Arbesman Thanking local politicians A big thanks to Rep. William Lacy Clay for joining Rep. Wagner in supporting the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. It is commendable that Missouri is a step ahead in this strive. In 2002, at the height of the AIDS crisis, the world came together to fight back by creating the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria. This international partnership has helped save 32 million lives since 2002 with U.S. leading the support. The Global Fund has a plan to support countries to save 16 million lives over the next three years and this can only be made possible with our continued support. The U.S. must again rise to its responsibility in this. The Global Fund is currently facing threats from the White House by President Trump recommending a 29% funding cut. Fortunately, there is bipartisan support for a 16% boost. [A sixteen percent] increase is far better than the 29% cut. Now, we need to make sure this increase makes it into our government’s 2020 spending bill. I urge our Senator Roy Blunt to take this opportunity and to be really [a] leader this time in his role on the appropriations committee. Science shows that we can end the global emergencies caused by AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, but this can be accomplished only if we maintain the political will to do so. Aashish Allu In response to Nov. 16 letter to the editor I am sorry he [Norman Baxter] wants to “spare us this one newsmagazine” [Nov. 27]. The only reason for my letter was to comment on the unrelenting right-wing dogma of Mr. Williams. I am not advocating infiltrating left-wing dogma into your precious newsmagazine but I am saddened at the close-minded information silo in which Mr. Baxter wishes to reside. That I read Mr. Williams’ column should indicate that I expose myself to views with which I disagree instead of a knee-jerk rejection of another point of view. I know of no other way to stay informed on a wide spectrum of views. Thankfully, the editorial staff disagrees with Mr. Baxter else my letter(s) would be censored. Bryce Frazier Regarding national politics While listening to nothing but praise about the prior service at the recent impeachment inquiry testimony of Dr. Fiona Hill, a Russian expert [who served on the National Security Council], am I alone in thinking that her testimony was arrogant and “less than truthful”? Setting out her long history of what she believed to be her dedicated service to our nation, Dr. Hill clearly articulated her vision of what the US foreign policy should be, based on her expertise and many years of service during prior administrations. She then repeatedly pointed out that her vision on foreign policy was completely different from that of the Trump Administration, and that she felt justified in opposing the president’s policies, with which she did not agree. The website of obamawhitehouse.archives.gov defines the role of the National Security Council as, “Council’s function has been to advise and assist the President on national security and foreign policies...also serves as the President’s principal arm for coordinating these policies among various government agencies...NCS is chaired by the President.” Based on this definition, it would seem that Dr. Hill’s job was not to promote her own foreign policies, but to promote the policy of the duly elected president. It shocked me to watch her testify with relative indifference that she knew disgraced “spy” Christopher Steele had been given a copy of the phony Steele dossier [funded by a DNC law firm – which launched the Russian Collusion investigation by Strobe Talbott, who is a close friend of the Clintons and served in the Clinton Administration] before it was even made public. What I found to be most incredible is Dr. Hill’s testimony that she didn’t even know what a “Never-Trumper” was, when in fact she clearly is one.
