Baby & ToddlerFeatureThere are two kinds ofexcessive criers: those who arecrying because of colic or some kindof internal discomfort, and those whoare just not sleeping well. Colickybabies tend to cry every few hours, every day, for weeks. Often theseepisodes occur late in the day and areaccompanied by babies scrunching uptheir faces and pulling their knees totheir chests. There is no set cause ortreatment for colic. There are some babies who cry morethan others, and their wailing soundsmay signal colic or some other underlyingmedical condition. Some babies, especially newborns, may also take alonger time adjusting to a life outside thecomforts of their mother’s womb.It is important that parents determinethe cause of the baby's distress.Recent studies show that, with time, babies will cry less, if their cries arepromptly answered. Colic is a differentmatter; this condition will probablyrun its course no matter what parentsdo. Generally, though, if an infant'sneeds are not met, the crying tendsto escalate and the little one becomesmore difficult to console.Parents need to understand theirchild's crying language. The biologicaland hormonal changes a motherexperiences when she hears her babycry, urge her to pick up and comforther baby. It's important to listen to yourown biological cues when your babycries, since most parents have naturalinstincts for calming their infant. Why babies have to cryCrying has two main functions. One,it's a message to the parents thatsomething is wrong. A baby's cryis really designed to be heard. Thesecond function is a self-regulatoryone. Babies use crying as an adaptivetool that helps them adjust to differentenvironments. For example, in anairplane, an infant's crying is her body'sattempt to deal with the change ofair pressure in the plane. This cryingactually helps balance the pressure inthe inner ear.Sometimes a change offormula is helpfulIt’s worth a try, for babies can’treally tell you that they’re feelinguncomfortable after a feed. Not allformulas are the same, and if you mixaround with moms and babies longenough, you’ll hear stories of how oneformula turned out to be much betterfor their infant compared to anotherformula. In breastfed children, a reviewof the mother's diet may be needed.Certain foods transferred through themother's milk may not agree with thebaby's digestive system. They’ll grow outof itDuring the first few weeksof life, parents' mainconcern is making surethey are well fed andcared for, and also, toensure that their babyfeels safe, secure andcomforted. Butas months pass,in addition to allthese parents needto teach babies toself-sooth and get usedto being by themselvesfrom time to time. Thisis where parents needto have a balance, andresist the urge to mollycoddle. Mostbabies will wake up several timeseach night and they need to be ableto comfort themselves so they will goback to sleep. After the third month, parents should set up a routine witha regular bedtime. This can be doneby having a set time for dinner, somerewinding, a warm bath if needed, amilk feed if needed together with astory-telling session and/or lullaby, andBabyTalk | December 2019 31
