Staying active this winter with outdoor events at Darby Park<br />

The following are events scheduled at<br />

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park this winter.<br />

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park is<br />

located at 1775 Darby Creek Drive in<br />

southwest Franklin County.<br />

• Bison: Behind the Scenes, Jan. 25<br />

from 1 to 3 p.m. - See how park staff tend<br />

to our bison. Meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Winter Tree ID, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. - No<br />

leaves? No problem. Learn to identify trees<br />

by the rest of their features. Meet at the<br />

Ranger Station.<br />

• Preschoolers: Dino Dig, Jan. 31 at 11<br />

a.m. or 1 p.m. - Dig up some dirt on how<br />

these prehistoric creatures lived. Ages 3-5<br />

meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Succulents, Feb. 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. -<br />

Come learn about these amazing indoor<br />

plants and pot one to bring home with you.<br />

Meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Owls — Whoo’s Calling?, Feb. 1 at 5:30<br />

p.m - Lure in owls using calls on a one-mile<br />

hike. Meet at Indian Ridge.<br />

• Bison, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. - Enjoy a hike<br />

to see North America’s largest land mammal.<br />

Meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Yoga in the Park, Feb. 8 at 11:30 a.m.<br />

- Learn yoga to help rejuvenate your mind<br />

and body. Meet at Cedar Ridge Lodge.<br />

• Photo Group: Image Review, Feb. 8 at<br />

10 a.m. - Attendees are invited to share<br />

their photos and receive constructive feedback.<br />

All skill levels welcome. Ages 18 and<br />

older meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Campfire, Feb. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. -<br />

Enjoy a winter campfire with hot coco and<br />

make s’mores. Meet at Ranger Station.<br />

• Noon Native Teas, Feb. 8 at 12 p.m. -<br />

Look at native and wild plants that can be<br />

used to make tea and then make your own<br />

blend. Meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Wildlife Hike, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. - Take<br />

a two-mile hike and look for winter animal<br />

activity. Meet at Indian Ridge.<br />

• Full Snow Moon Hike, Feb. 9 from 6 to<br />

9:30 p.m. - Take a brisk four-mile hike<br />

through fields and forests. Meet at the<br />

Ranger Station.<br />

• Preschoolers: Woodpeckers in Winter.<br />

Feb. 11 at 9:30 or 11 a.m. - Learn all about<br />

these weird wonderful birds. Ages 3-5 meet<br />

at Nature Center.<br />

• I’m Frond of You, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. -<br />

Get outside with a loved one on Valentine’s<br />

Day and hike two-miles learning about<br />

ferns. Ages 18 and older meet at Indian<br />

Ridge.<br />

• Ironwood Wolves, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. -<br />

Ironwood Wolves talk about the relationship<br />

between two mighty North American<br />

mammals — the wolf and the bison. There<br />

will also be an opportunity to meet one of<br />

their ambassadors. Meet at the Nature<br />

Center.<br />

• Signs of Spring, Feb. 16 at 1 p.m. -<br />

Walk and watch for early signs of spring.<br />

Meet at the Ranger Station.<br />

• Night at the Nature Center, Feb. 16<br />

from 6 to 8 p.m. - See what animals awaken<br />

after dark in the 53-foot living stream.<br />

Meet at the Nature Center.<br />

• Stump the Naturalist, Feb. 16 from 2<br />

to 4 p.m. - Learn about some weird things<br />

that have stumped our naturalist and<br />

check them out under a microscope. If you<br />

have something that you found but can’t<br />

identify, bring it along. Meet at the Nature<br />

Center.<br />

• 47th Annual Winker Hike Series, Feb.<br />

22 at 10 a.m. - Enjoy a two, four or six-mile<br />

trek along the banks and bluffs of Big<br />

Darby Creek. Meet at Ranger Station.<br />

• The Good, the Bad and the Hungry:<br />

Dealing with Wildlife Conflict in Your<br />

Landscape, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. - Viewing<br />

wildlife species in your backyard can be<br />

enjoyable, but sometimes conflict arises,<br />

usually in the form of damage such as<br />

eaten plants, dug up bulbs or holes in the<br />

lawn. Fortunately, most wildlife damage<br />

can be managed with the right techniques<br />

and strategies. Meet at the Nature Center.<br />
