Paris. Everyone knows the City of Light also
happens to be the world’s capital of gourmet
cuisine. So where better to bring together the
greats of the world’s wine industry in a new
business event? From the 10th to the 12th of
February 2020, the Paris-Versailles Exhibition
Centre will be the “world epicentre of wines
and spirits”.
Reinforcing Vinexpo’s expertise, Vinexpo
Paris aligns with Wine Paris to allow buyers
to optimise their business potential and to
discover a broad offer representing French and
international terroirs. And for its first edition
in Paris, the quality of exhibitors and visitors
expected shows the appeal of the event and of
the services it offers.
The first edition of the Vinexpo Paris exhibition
will again have the honour of being placed
under the high patronage of the President of
the French Republic, as was the case for the
latest edition of the Bordeaux event. And while
it’s a first for Paris, Vinexpo boasts 40 years
of experience in understanding the market
and creating a broad network of influent
distributors, becoming an internationally
reputed brand in the wine and spirits sector.
As a genuine meeting point for producers and
buyers of wines and spirits, Vinexpo connects
a great number of stakeholders in the vinegrowing
and winemaking industry to promote
sales and stimulate markets.
Some 30,000 national and international
visitors with very diverse profiles: importers,
wine shops, restaurant owners and hotel
managers, sommeliers, central purchasing
entities, wine merchants, specialised
distributors and wholesalers, sales
representatives, are expected. We look
forward to seeing you there!

Moët Hennessy

Be Spirits features a bar as long as

For the first time, Vinexpo is bringing together
the spirits and mixology sectors with a dedicated
area at Vinexpo Paris called Be Spirits.

This will welcome professionals from across the
industry, including importers, distributors, major
buyers, journalists, bloggers and many others.
The company aims to consider new
methods of winemaking to protect
the environment.
As the wine and spirits industry focuses
increasingly on environmental issues, Moët
Hennessy will be taking the opportunity to
showcase its eco-credentials at Vinexpo.
In particular, the company wants to demonstrate
its commitment to living soils and to a more
sustainable future.
“We wanted to share our
experience and our approach
and organise expert forums
on key topics surrounding
sustainable winemaking
during this new edition of
Vinexpo, the event where the
winemaking world comes
together,” said Philippe
Schaus, CEO of Moët
Hennessy.
“We’re opening our doors to
industry fellows and all those
who wish to take part in creating an increasingly
sustainable viticulture.”
Moët Hennessy has invited to its forums a
community of experts: vineyard directors,
researchers, sommeliers, spokespeople from
international institutions, NGOs, and young
companies specialising in technology and
sustainability.
Each panel at the forums is comprised of
experts from Moët Hennessy and specialists
from around the globe.

They will take turns addressing the current
state of soils and biodiversity and will share
their solutions regarding current production
models to accelerate the transition to more
ecologically sensitive production methods.
The discussions will have an open format
consisting of a series of 30-minute conversations
followed by a 10-minute question-and-answer
session with the public. The programme will
include tastings and masterclasses around
Moët Hennessy products.
During Vinexpo, Moët
Hennessy will showcase its
investments in equipment
that is more environmentally
sensitive and in training
winegrowers and farmers
in new technologies. It will
also highlight its promotion
of sustainable winegrowing
certifications, and its support
for scientific and university
projects to share and
disseminate knowledge.
The company will also
announce its commitments for the future.
On the last day of Vinexpo there will be a
conversation on the future of winegrowing with
Schaus. This will be followed by workshops
on the future of gastronomy and wines, with
participants including the celebrated chef
Alain Ducasse and students from a number of
institutions, who will reflect on the future of
sustainable gastronomy
PAV 7.1 / STAND AC42
The hub of the area will be the Infinite Bar, a bar
as long as an Olympic-sized swimming pool that
will showcase 20 brands of spirits and will also
feature 20 mixologists from the most prestigious
Parisian bars.
As well as the Infinite Bar, the other key
attraction of Be Spirits will be the conferences
hosted there.
Dealing with various cutting-edge topics related
to the spirits industry, these conferences will
be led by high-level experts, including the
international spirits consultant Alexandre
Vingtier, and by distillery owners and renowned
barmen.
These conferences are grouped under two
themes: Be Mixology and Be Brand.
Be Mixology will provide analysis on the current
and future key trends of the global spirits market
and, at a time when many well-known brands
have recently launched their first no/low abv
spirits, it will also look at the growing success of
no/low abv spirits
Along a 50-metre stretch, 20 bars will be
showcasing craft brands and mixology, making
this unmissable space the hub of Be Spirits.

The tie-up between Comexpos
international business for part
As Paris prepares to welcome the first simultaneous
edition of Vinexpo Paris and Wine Paris, we asked
Laurent Noël, Comexposium Division Director, and
Rodolphe Lameyse, CEO of Vinexpo, how this joint
venture came about.
Rodolphe
Lameyse
CEO, Vinexpo
Bringing together two leading
French companies able to cover
all the marketing segments of the
industry is a fantastic opportunity.
The new company will combine
the assets of our two structures:
international sales and logistics
network with the Comexposium
international sales and logistics
network with the Comexposium
international subsidiaries in over
22 countries, the client portfolio
and the brand image of Vinexpo,
along with our common expertise,
strikes as sufficiently relevant for
our brands to join forces.
In a constantly evolving global
wine and spirits market, we
are creating a unique and very
efficient platform for wine buyers
and wine makers alike.
This move will also allow our
clients to expand their trade
territories by reaching new wine
consumers. Moreover, this joint
venture reflects Vinexpo Holding
and Comexposium’s strategic
direction to become the world’s
leading organiser of wine and
spirits events.
Our alliance is consequently the
best way to reach our objective
and become the leading wine and
spirits show organizer.
What will change for exhibitors
and attendees?
We will leverage our mutual
strengths to benefit our
stakeholders and meet the main
expectations of our clients.

More time by making it easier
to choose from a clearer event
portfolio.
Our structure will offer an
optimised, diversified and
targeted portfolio to achieve
maximum efficiency for all
operators, whether producers
or buyers.
Which events are affected?
The new entity will manage and
reinforce the current portfolio
of 10 well-established events
bringing together the assets
of both organisers: Vinexpo
(Bordeaux, Paris, Hong Kong,
Shanghai and New York) and
the Vinexpo Explorer events
for Vinexpo Holding, Wine Paris
(Vinisud/Vinovision Paris),
World Wine Meetings and
World Bulk Wine Exhibition
(Amsterdam and Asia) for
Comexposium.
Please tell us a little more
about Comexposium.
Laurent Noël: Comexposium is
the world’s third-largest show
organiser with more than 135
business-to-consumer and
business-to-business shows
over a wide range of markets.
Wine and spirits is a sector with
which we have always worked
within the framework of our
Agrifood events in France and
across the world. We organise
SITEVI, which operates
upstream of the sector. In 2017,
we launched VinoVision in Paris
with AVS, integrated Vinisud,
World Wine Meetings and
World Bulk Wine Exhibitions
(WBWE) in 2017. In 2019, we
launched Wine Paris with AVS
and Vinisud. We are delighted
today to create, with Vinexpo,
the world’s leading organiser of
events dedicated to wines and
spirits.
Will any new events result
from this partnership?
Rodolphe Lameyse: Now we can
offer our clients opportunities
worldwide. This is a response
to the radically changing export
environment, whether in the
US, in Europe or in Asia.
With the joint venture’s new
potential, we will be able to map
events closely geared to our
clients’ needs so that buyers
and producers can benefit from
the international stage. Our
portfolio will evolve as market
opportunities arise.
What will the new company
offer?
Together with WBWE, Wine
Paris and Vinexpo, we will
cover the whole range of wine
and spirit products from the
dynamic bulk wine to super
premium segments.
In addition, we will continue
to develop high quality and
targeted business meetings
with the World Wine Meetings
and Vinexpo Explorer brands
dedicated to wine and spirits.
The portfolio will be optimised
and clarified to make it more

I TRADE TALK I
Larsson gives the lowdown
on life as a wine buyer
During two decades in the wine trade, Johan Larsson has been a sommelier at
some of Stockholm's finest restaurants and head steward to the King and Queen of
Sweden. In 2010 he joined Systembolaget, the government-owned chain of liquor
stores in Sweden, as a wine buyer. He is currently responsible for France.
Johan
Larsson
Wine buyer,
Systembolaget
PRESS CORNER
Could you describe your role as wine buyer for
Systembolaget?
As buyers at Systembolaget, we are responsible for all
products of a specific origin or category in our some
440 shops throughout Sweden. This includes contacts
with distributors, producers and other stakeholders in
the industry through regular meetings and travels
to the respective origins and trade shows. In close
relationship with our category managers, the buyers
set up plans for future launches. The buyers get to
write the tender requests and, through blind tastings,
they select the products best fitting
these tender requests. All buyers
at Systembolaget are ISO Certified
tasters, and often hold a diploma
degree or higher degree combined
with work experience from either
our shops or from working at various
importing companies or producers,
or as sommeliers.
Why are you attending Vinexpo
Paris and what do you hope to
achieve there?
By attending the trade show, I get
to meet with producers to get a
understanding of what’s available for their respective
portfolio and to see if and how these products fit our
consumers' needs. That includes all aspects of the
products, including liquid, packaging and design.
Will you be attending any of the master classes or
seminar sessions?
Usually, I do not attend master classes or seminars
during trade shows. I tend to prioritize meetings
instead.
WE ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR

ORIGIN OR
CATEGORY IN OUR
SOME 440 SHOPS
THROUGHOUT
SWEDEN
As your responsibility is for
France, can you say anything
please about which wines
from the country are gaining
popularity?
We see an increase in the wines
showing typicity of origin and
grape (or style). Certified organic
wines are still very popular and
we have a continuous interest in
developing this field as well as
more environmentally friendly
packaging such as lightweight
bottles and PET
The view
from Italy
Gianni Fabrizio
Editor, Gambero Rosso
Gianni Fabrizio is editor of
Italy's leading wine and food
magazine, Gambero Rosso.
We asked him to tell us a little
more about Gambero Rosso.
Gambero Rosso is the leading wine
guide and magazine in Italy. It is very
well known and highly respected wine
guide. We taste over 45,000 wines
every year and the best Italian vines,
around 400 wines, receive our "3
glasses" award.
What are you primarily looking for at
Vinexpo?
First of all, Vinexpo is a very important
event in the wine industry, if not the
most important. I will be promoting
Italy's best wines in Paris as France is
an important market for Italian wines.
If I have some extra time I will also be
looking at Bordeaux and Burgundy as I
know quite a few winemakers.
What are the key wine and spirits
trends in Italy?
The trend shows a strong growth in
organic wines, without sulfur and also
the vins tranquilles, where you can
finish a bottle in a meal. The best selling
wines are light wines which are easy to
drink.
Of course premium wines always sell
very well, like Barolo and Brunello and
they are well recognized in foreign
markets like the US. In spirits, Vermouth
is experiencing a true renaissance,
with many winemakers making it. Gin
is also very popular whilst Cognac and
Armagnac are facing a downtrend.

Time
to celebrate for
Nicolas Feuillatte
The wine critics of "La Revue du Vin de France", a magazine recognized
as a leading voice in the industry and publisher of the "Green Guide" of
the best of France, elected the Nicolas Feuillatte wine center "group of
winemakers of the year", during a ceremony held last month in Paris.
This brand of champagne, well known
throughout France, thanks to its presence
in supermarkets, is the largest Champagne
cooperative, bringing together more than
4,500 members and marketed, in 2018, 10.4
m bottles. Founded in 1976 and now based
in Chouilly, Nicolas Feuillatte has risen to
number one in sales in France and in third
position in the rest of the world.
Earlier last year, the Champagne powerhouse
had acquired the Champagne house Henri
Abelé from the Henkell-Freixenet Group for an
undisclosed sum.
CV-CNF continues its value strategy in
a Champagne market driven by brand
premiumization, and steps up its development
with the addition of a prized asset in its
enlarged brand portfolio.
“Our decision to buy this jewel, which is part of
our local wine heritage, opens a new chapter
for the Centre Vinicole-Champagne Nicolas
Feuillatte in the history of our Appellation,”
comments Christophe Juarez, CV-CNF’s CEO.
“It includes a complementary development
model to distribution channels always keen to
list exclusive products with high added value.
Our vision relies on a long-term perspective
and we trust this external growth acquisition
will provide new impetus to our unique
business model.”
Henri Abelé Champagne House, which dates
back to 1757 and is therefore one of the
oldest and rarest Champagne Houses, is
located in Reims historical city centre with
large traditional chalk cellars. On its side,
Nicolas Feuillatte is the youngest of all the
major Champagne Houses and the largest
wine growers’ brand, with its state-of-the-art
flagship estate located on the hillsides of the
Côte des Blancs. Both companies share a
deep attachment to the land of Champagne
and have common values of heritage and
modernity, tradition and boldness

AdVini, a French leader in terroir wines, is one of the
top brands taking part in L'Avenue at Vinexpo Paris.
This area, which will resemble a line of shop windows
from prestigious Paris boutiques, will feature a total
of eight market-leading premium brands.
The French leader in terroir wines, AdVini will be
able to impress those attending L'Avenue with its
impressive environmental credentials.
In all, 1,000 hectares of the company’s vineyards
are in organic or biodynamic farming or are
High Environmental Value (HVE – Haute Valeur
Environnementale) certified.
As an example, at AdVini’s Laroche estate, efforts
to preserve biodiversity extend beyond
vine activity, with hedgerows having been
replanted in the vineyards and beehives,
bird boxes and bat boxes set up.
At another of AdVini’s estates, Chateau
Gassier, wines obtained organic
certification in 2016, benefiting local
fauna including butterflies, bats and
raptors.
“Organic winemaking practices are
more respectful of the terroir and gives
the fruit a pure taste,” said Georges
Gassier, winemaker.
And to take another example, five of
Vignobles Jeanjean’s estates are
certified organic, and the other
three will be certified for the 2021
vintage, with efforts aimed at
taking care of the environment
and the health of both
consumers and employees

I SPECIAL FEATURE I WINE PAIRING I
Marc Almert
Best Sommelier of the World,
ISA (International Sommelier
Association)
The ever-changing
world of pairing
Marc Almert was named Best
Sommelier of the World by
the International Sommelier
Association last year. Here,
the sommelier at the Pavillon
restaurant in Zurich shares
his secrets and how his role
is evolving when it comes to
wine pairing.
Nowadays we can choose from
a much wider variety of wines –
more and more grape varietals
and regions are now available and
can be integrated into the menu.
Furthermore, many restaurants now
offer a “beverage pairing” rather
than a mere “wine pairing”, thereby
showcasing other beverages such
as beers, alcohol-free drinks or even
cocktails in addition to wine itself. This
way the sommeliers can introduce
the guests to new experiences.
How does this change from country
to country or region to region?
For me the type of restaurant is more
important than the country or region.
Outstanding great restaurants can be
found in many countries and many
locations, and the international guests
travel specifically for a memorable
dining experience – of course
accompanied by selected beverages.
Naturally, restaurants might include a
local touch; the Pavillon (two Michelin
stars) in Zurich offers an entire Swiss
tasting flight as an alternative to the
classic international pairing.
Who are the most open to different
pairings?
Again, I believe this is more dependent
on the restaurant than on the diner.
For example, when I was working in
an Asian restaurant in Germany more
local customers were asking for wine
pairings than in the French restaurant
located in the same hotel; the more
unfamiliar the style of cuisine is to the
diner, the more likely she or he will be
open to pairings.
What are some of the more unusual
pairings you have suggested?
It is still unusual in Germany or
Switzerland to enjoy a sparkling
wine within the menu rather than
as an aperitif. Recently we had an
event which combined a Brut Nature
Vintage Champagne with a lovely dish
of smoked salmon. Another surprise
for our guests was a Sloe Gin with
a matching chocolate-raspberry
dessert. And of course, many guests
taste certain Swiss varietals for the
first time in the Pavillon’s Swiss wine
tasting flight.
What is the biggest mistake most
people make when pairing?
Many people think that the main
component of the dish (i.e. the fish,
meat etc.) is the one that determines
the wine. However, often the sauce
and/or a side dish can be much more
dominant in taste. For example, if you
have a pepper sauce with a piece
of meat, the spiciness needs to be
considered when choosing the ideal
wine pairing

APPLE ICE WINE
FROM LITHUANIA
Gintaro Sino wines from Lithuania are
becoming renowned for their ice wine. But
not any ice wine. They say a great deal of
pride, love and work have gone into the
making of their Apple Ice Wine, with a
bouquet of aromas so rich that it seems
you are tasting a “fairy tale of berries”.
Several years of efforts in attempting
to work on similar techniques to those
used in Canada led to a number of
disappointments, but now have finally
given results. Gintaro Sino now has a
wine which they believe is just good as
its luxurious cousins across the Atlantic.
The story is thus wrapped in legends of
how winemakers leave grapes unpicked
throughout the winter, await the cold
that turns their fruit into ice crystals.
Temperatures of around minus 15C°
are required for the harvest, in the
south region, resulting in very limited
production quantities of such wine is

AGE-OLD GEORGIAN

ONE BRAND –
MANY ORIGINS
Generally, until now, a wine
brand would tend to pertain
to a region – or in some
cases a country. Enter
Tussock Jumper. Tussock
Jumper is a premium wine
brand created from the shared passion of wine specialists from eleven
different countries around the world: South Africa, Germany, Argentina,
Australia, Chile, Spain, France, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and the USA.
Their aim is to bring together the world’s very best wines under a single,
distinctive, quality mark: the woolly red sweater of Tussock Jumper, so one
can jump from wine to wine, jumper to jumper, all around the world. What
makes them quite unique is that all their wines are bottled at source – in the
same place where the grapes are grown. It’s a collection of individual stories
each with a special character and totally unique pedigrees
PAV 7.1 / STAND A5
While Georgia has long been
renowned as a wine growing region,
many people still are unaware of the
extraordinary richness of its 450 grape
varieties, 29 of which are used in wine
growing. High-quality Georgian wine
grape varieties include: Rkatsiteli,
Saperavi, Mtsvane, Khikhvi, Kisi,
Chinese, Tsolikouri, Tsitska, Krakhuna,
Leksandrouli, Ojaleshi, Chkhaveri, and
Aladasturi.
In Georgia, the wine grape has long
been considered as a sacred, divine
plant and wine itself has a sacral
function. On the basis of archaeological
excavations, Georgia is now
recognised as an historic homeland of
wine-making and vine-growing. During
archaeological excavations on the
territory of Kvemo Kartli, grape seeds
have been discovered dating back
to the Aeneolithic Age. It is reported
that during the early Neolithic period,
both eastern and western Georgia
were familiar with the culture of
wine, and it had quite a big role in the
economic life of the local population.
