doctor’s orders / by Natalie Strand, MD Natalie Strand, M.D., is an anesthesiologist at Mayo Clinic in Arizona It is no secret that America has an opioid epidemic, and when it comes to pain and pills, many patients find themselves watching the clock for their next dose of pain medication. But do you know about integrative medicine, a combination of techniques used to decrease pain? Integrative Medicine Combining conventional and alternative care for pain management What is integrative medicine? Integrative medicine is the combination of “conventional” and “alternative” medicine. Conventional medicine is care that you would receive from a doctor, such as surgery or prescription medications, whereas alternative medicine is care you typically receive outside of a doctor’s office. Coupling the two together creates a treatment plan that aims to treat the patient holistically, including physical, emotional, spiritual, mental health, and well-being. Integrative medicine methods include: Massage therapy: This therapy applies pressure to your body’s soft tissues, such as muscles and ligaments, to alleviate pain, tension and stress. It is often offered in complement to standard treatments of pain and stress. Patients who may benefit from this therapy include those with cancer, heart disease, stomach problems, fibromyalgia, and post-surgical patients. Herbal supplements: Herbs, or dietary supplements, are used for hundreds of reasons, and some are as strong or potent as prescriptions. For this reason, it is important to coordinate any herbal supplements with your current medications and have a detailed discussion with your physician. Herbs have the potential to reduce anxiety, decrease inflammation, and lower cholesterol Acupuncture: This is an Eastern practice of inserting thin needles into targeted areas of the body. Acupuncture is a low-risk treatment that is often used to manage and alleviate painful chronic conditions. Additionally, it is known to reduce nausea and insomnia relating to chemotherapy. Not all approaches are created equal Before trying integrative medicine, make sure to discuss options with your physician, as some treatments will work better than others. When thinking about integrative medicine, here are some helpful tips: Do some digging. There is a myriad of information to be found about integrative medicine. Stick with the pros. When researching online, make sure that the information you are receiving is from a reputable source. Avoid treatment that can interact with your medication. Treatment, such as herbs, has the potential to interact with certain medication. Talk to your doctor about whether a treatment option is known to interact with prescriptions. 50 ScottsdaleHealth 02/20
