Online portal
adding access
By Dedra Cordle
Staff Writer
In 2012, the South-Western City
Schools District began using an online portal
called Infinite Campus which allows
parents to pay fees, access their child’s
academic reports and class schedules and
make real-time adjustments to contact
information and medical information.
The parental feedback on the online tool
was overwhelmingly positive, said district
officials, but the one complaint they kept
hearing was the absence of the food service
department in the Infinite Campus.
“They had wanted seamless and universal
access to the system,” said
Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise at the Jan.
27 board of education meeting.
In February of 2019, it was announced
that the food service department would
begin the transition to the Infinite Campus
at the start of the 2019-2020 school year
barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Fortunately, said district officials, there
were no unforeseen circumstances and the
transition was completed in August.
“The transition to the Infinite Campus
was a huge project for the food service
department,” said supervisor Lisa
Hamrick at the meeting, “and overall it
couldn’t have gone any better.”
Using the online portal, parents will be
able to notify the district and department
of food allergies, monitor what their child
is eating, and check and pay balances.
Hamrick said if there are low or negative
balances, the portal will notify the
parent via automatic messaging or phone
rather than the head cook at the school.
“We wanted to take that call out of the
kitchen,” said Hamrick. “We want our
head cooks to focus on serving students
and not on that aspect.”
Board member Lee Schreiner asked
about the department policy should a child
have a negative balance.
“We always feed them a meal,” she said.
“We don’t shame our students here.”
Schreiner said he was glad to hear that
the students received a full meal rather
than a modified meal, like a sole peanut
butter and jelly sandwich.
“I think we all want our students to be
at their best and in order for them to do so
they have to have food in their bellies,” he
‘This Hurts,’ one of the vignettes from “Almost, Maine.”
A new take on a winter play
The Bishop Ready Theatre
Department has chosen to present a different
type of play for its winter theater
production.
John Ciardi’s “Almost, Maine” (adapted
version), presents a series of eight
brief scenes or vignettes, each exploring
various aspects of love. The play takes
place in the mythical Almost, Maine, a
place described as “not organized enough
to be a town, but too populated to be a
wilderness” on a cold and magical
Midwinter Night.
Tied together by a prologue and an
epilogue, each scene focuses on a story
and how love plays out for different people.
The citizens of Almost, Maine, are
humorous, plain-spoken, thoughtful, and
sincere and their experiences, while
playful and surreal, are commonplace in
Almost.
The cast of 19 includes students from
each class, from freshman through senior.
Each scene involves a different couple.
The adapted version of “Almost,
Maine,” is suitable for students in grade
six and higher. Performances are Friday,
Feb. 14, at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 15, at
2 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students.
The Prairie Township Trustees have set
new rules for the public comment portion
of the government meetings.
“The board is committed to an ongoing
and active dialogue with its constituents,”
Township Administrator Rob Peters said
at a recent board meeting. “However, the
board recognizes that true dialogue must
follow basic rules in order to be construc-
said.
During further discussion on the food
service department, board member David
Donofrio inquired about a recent federal
proposal to scale back school nutrition
guidelines set forth in 2012.
“Do you anticipate any major impact on
the department?” he asked.
Hamrick said she has not had the time
to go over the entire proposal but said she
does not anticipate the department will
make any changes at this time.
In related news, Hamrick said the
department serves 6,900 daily breakfasts
and 13,400 daily lunches. She added that
East Franklin Elementary School recently
began to participate in the breakfast-inthe-classroom
program, which brings the
total number of elementary schools
involved in the program to eight.
The board of education also heard from
transportation supervisor Tim Cox at the
meeting. According to Cox, their fleet of
more than 200 buses are in good shape and
safety inspections are currently under way.
He said he expects all of the buses to be
inspected by the end of June 2020.
tive.”
Peters said that the new rules are
intended to facilitate constructive and civil
public comments that respect the rights,
sensibilities and time of all those in attendance
at the meetings. Some of the new
rules include limiting comments to five
minutes, addressing the board no more
than once per topic, per meeting and no
slander or shouting.
The biggest change to the rule is that
speakers cannot complain about a township
employee during the meetings anymore.
Peters said employee complaints
must be presented in writing to the township
administrator. He will then be forward
the complaint on to the board of
trustees.
In other news, township officials are
evaluating opportunities for further development,
including the use of vacant land
owned by the township.
“We recently got a request for the usage
of a vacant parcel the township owns,” said
Peters. “I will be presenting this opportunity
to the board, but we would not consider
selling this lot. Before we did anything like
this, we would need to consider what is
best for the community and what we want
to do in the future with the parcel.”
The parcel, which is located next to the
Prairie Township Community Center,
could be used for expansion of the center or
a parking lot. The trustees are still trying
to determine what the best use for the
property should be.
The trustees also took care of some
housekeeping, including naming a new
board chairman and vice-chairman. Cathy
Schmelzer was voted board chairwoman
and Steve Kennedy was named vice chairman.
The board also promoted several
township employees. Among the people
promoted was the new director of the community
center.
Michael Pollack was promoted from
interim recreation director to recreation
director with an annual salary of $81,370.
The township also promoted Courtenay
Chaffin, who will go from aquatics manager
to operation manager with an annual
salary of $67,500. Chaffin will be eligible
for a $2,500 pay increase after six months.
Commissioners miffed over
zoning applicant no shows
February 9, 2020 - WESTSIDE MESSENGER - PAGE 3
By Ris Twigg
Staff Writer
Two applicants have come to the
Greater Hilltop Area Commission meetings
over the last several months looking to
propose two separate for-profit addiction
recovery centers in the Hilltop.
One applicant is simply seeking a letter
of support from the commission for their
project, but declined to return to this
month’s meeting for the commission’s
approval.
The other applicant, after bringing the
idea to the November zoning committee
meeting, has no-showed their zoning hearing
during full commission meetings at
least twice, leaving several residents with
concerns over representation.
“I will not be able to attend the next
meeting,” one resident said during the Feb.
4 meeting. “I just want to speak up because
my right to vote or express myself is actually
being damaged by this person repeatedly
scheduling and not showing up.”
Commissioners also spoke to the lack of
follow-through from the zoning applicant.
“This is totally unfair to the people that
showed up tonight. Something has to be
done,” Geoffrey Phillips, a Hilltop commissioner,
said during the meeting. “It’s a forprofit
corporation. They are making money
off this enterprise and our neighborhood.”
Residents and commissioners alike
debated ideas for amending the commission’s
bylaws to make sure zoning applicants
show up when their project is put on
the agenda as well as ways to ensure the
community can be alerted when a zoning
applicant is no longer able to attend the
hearing.
The commission voted to table a vote on
the proposed recovery center project.
Scott Stockman, vice chairman of the
commission, said the project itself wasn’t
“totally clear” from the start.
The applicant brought the for-profit
recovery center to the November zoning
committee meeting in 2019. Then, after
failing to attend the zoning hearing for the
project during the full December commission
meeting, the applicant hired a new
consulting company to represent the project.
“They’re just working out what they’re
trying to present to us. So there’s a little bit
of going back to the drawing board,”
Stockman said. “They called me before the
meeting started without a lot of notice and
just said that they weren’t able to come
here tonight and make the presentation.”
Stockman added that the applicant had
emailed him on Sunday to inform the commission
they would present the project during
the full commission meeting.
The proposed addiction recovery center
would house up to 19 people at once. The
applicant is looking to locate the center at
2456 W. Broad St.
“It’s not entirely clear. That’s why we
have a zoning committee and then following
it up right away with a full committee
hearing,” Stockman said. “But the delay is
causing more clarity issues.”
For the love of succulents
Messenger photo by Dedra Cordle
The colors of winter can often be dull and one thing that can spice up the season is a little green. On Feb.
1, approximately 30 people throughout Franklin and Madison counties came out to the Battelle Darby
Creek Nature Center to learn more about succulents and take one – or a few – back home with them to
spruce up their living quarters. Lindsey Krusling, a part-time naturalist at the metro park, spent several
months raising Aloe Vera, Haworthia and Hens-and-Chicks in the basement in order for the participants
in the first-time program to take them home and let them thrive. Here, Priscilla Harris and her granddaughter,
Hazel check out the bed of succulents before the crowd came over to plant them in pots and
transport them away. The duo from Grove City said they love succulents and other indoor plants and
thoroughly enjoyed the program.

Franklin Township considers a ‘no knock’ policy
By Amanda Ensinger
Staff Writer
At a recent Franklin Township meeting,
the trustees discussed creating a no knock
policy to protect residents from solicitation.
“While we don’t have a resolution for
this because we are not a limited home rule
township, we have seen other townships
enact similar resolutions without having
limited home rule authority,” said John
Fleshman, township trustee. “We would
like to have something to protect residents
from having people constantly knocking at
their door and asking them to purchase
items.”
The trustees added that they would look
at a resolution that mirrored what
Jefferson Township has in place.
“Basically, how the resolution would
work, is if an individual is selling an item,
they would need to register with the township
before they can go door-to-door selling
their item,” said Aryeh Alex, township
trustee. “Non-profits like Girl Scouts would
be allowed to not register; this is more for
businesses looking for a profit.”
Part of the reason the township wants
this legislation is to protect residents from
having unwanted visitors roaming their
neighborhood.
“We don’t want random people knocking
on doors and seeing if residents are home
or not,” said Ralph Horn, township trustee.
Celebrating African
history at Hilltop Library
The Hilltop Library will celebrate Black
History Month with a musical event called
Singing, Drumming and Dancing with
around the westside
“This could lead to people breaking into
homes and stealing items. This is a way to
further protect our residents.”
In other news, the board provided residents
with information on how they can get
a free radon test from the Franklin County
Board of Health. The board is offering free
kits residents can use to test if they have
the dangerous gas in their basements.
“Radon is an odorless and tasteless gas
that is frequently found in basements,”
Fleshman said. “It has been linked to lung
cancer and is very dangerous to have in
your home.”
Residents simply follow the instructions
on the kit, mail it back and the board will
let them know if they have radon and how
they can remedy it.
To request a kit, contact the township at
614-279-9411 or franklin-township.com.
Township officials also informed residents
that the township as been selected
for a grant from SWACO to provide recycling
services to the township.
“SWACO is covering 75 percent of the
recycling cost to bring recycling to all the
township offices,” said Mark Potts, township
administrator. “We want to use this
partnership as an opportunity to raise
awareness about recycling in the township
and encourage others to recycle too.”
According to Potts, the township wants
to set a good example for the community
and hopes if township employees recycle,
are invited to celebrate African history and
residents will too.
The township currently does not have a
trash or recycling contract with one vendor
and instead residents pay for these services
individually. The township previously had
a trash contract with Local Waste Services,
but did not renew their contract when they
saw rates increase. The increase was due to
residents not paying their bills, as well as
many residents opting out.
Sibling tale falls flat without vision or voice
Once upon a time in a land called
Hollywood, the studio executives who
determine the release dates of their theatrical
properties got together and declared
the first month of the year as the perfect
place to dump the worst of the films on
their schedule. While no explanation was
given for their decision — after all, plenty of
duds are released in the months that follow
too — January eventually came to be known
as the place where movies go to die.
Attempts have been made throughout
the years to bring life to the month and a
few successes have been had. The one I just
saw, however, could not be counted
westside
amongst them. In fact, the idea for it
should have been left in the dirt.
The tale of ‘Hansel and Gretel’ has been
around for more than 200 years and has
been adapted in many forms. The story has
been cleaned up to make it more palatable
for the younger crowd, turned into dark
comedies for the middle set and made over
to create careers as witch hunters for adult
fare. Its latest iteration pulls bits and
pieces from all three, but leans more on the
darkness of the original Grimm Brother
form. This concoction creates a poorly
developed and stilted mess of a film that
grasps around desperately to find an audience.
But how does it expect to find one
when it doesn’t know what it wants to do?
It begins in a time where famine
abounds and two siblings have just been
cast out of the home because their mother
can no longer afford to feed them. With no
prospect of employment except in the
household of a lecherous pervert, a
teenaged Gretel (Sophia Lillis) and her
younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leaky)
take to the woods to survive on their own.
Ill equipped to live off the land, the two
begin to see cloaked figures in the woods
and hear whispers fill the air. Is it due to
hunger? Sleep deprivation? The stress from
sharing a bed with an unexplained zombie
monster? It could be all of the above, and it
could be nothing of the sort.
Though spooked and on edge from their
experience, it does not deter the pair from
shacking up with an unsettling woman
named Holda (Alice Krige) when she offers
them shelter from the elements and food to
eat. As they get to know the elderly woman
and become more comfortable in her home
in the middle of the woods, strange things
begin to happen to the siblings which causes
their close bond to strain.
After a particularly difficult day, Gretel
dreams she, like her mother before her,
casts Hansel out in the elements to rid herself
of the burden of him. Then when she
wakes, he is gone.
Despite assurances from Holda that
running off is just what boys do, Gretel is
determined to discover what happened to
her brother and who is to blame. Is it the
lonely older woman with a skill for casting
The Reel Deal
Dedra Cordle
spells, or the lonely
younger woman discovering
her own
power? Though the
movie tries to offer
both as suspects, it
largely sticks to the
long-told tale.
The latter point is where the movie falls
into a pit of dullness, with its refusal to
tread a different path. Say what you will
about 2013’s “Hansel and Gretel: Witch
Hunters” (note: it’s awful) but at least it
had its own vision and voice which is more
than I can say about “Gretel and Hansel.”
There are elements here to make it an
interesting coming-of-age story but it collapses
under the weight of a poor script and
poor direction. Not even the presence of the
great Alice Krige and the terrific production
design could save it.
The best thing I can say about the film
is that it is short (the duration is around
one hour and 24 minutes) but I also have to
add that it feels long. Just save your time
and your money and cast it aside like the
mother of Gretel and Hansel did at the
beginning. It really is for the best.
