Programme warns of dangers
of speeding and intersections
THE CRASH Bash road safety
programme being performed
across Canterbury schools over
the next few weeks will aim to
make teenagers aware of the
dangers of speeding.
The performance, targeted
towards year 11-13 students, will
tour 30 schools during term one
including St Margaret’s College,
Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, Burnside
High School, St Andrew’s
College and Christchurch Boys’
High School.
Crash Bash is an interactive
stage performance that tours
secondary schools, spreading the
message to young people about
the importance of making safe
choices when driving.
Said St Andrew’s College head
of middle school Mikae Tuu’u:
“Crash Bash do it in a way that
gets the key points across, however,
it is very energetic and has a
positive vibe about it.”
“I know our students always
take key points away from the
presentations while enjoying
themselves at the same time.”
This year’s performance, What’s
the Rush? focuses on intersection
safety and the risks of speed.
Said city council transport
operations manager Steffan
Thomas: “Speed determines
both the likelihood of a crash
occurring and the severity of
the outcome. Regardless of what
causes a crash, whether people
walk away or are carried away
will depend on the speed their
vehicles are travelling.
“We want young people to
be aware of the risks that come
with driving too fast and to
Mr Thomas said.
Mr Thomas said drivers on
a restricted licence are seven
times more likely to be involved
in a crash resulting in a fatal
or serious injury than other
drivers.
“Data also shows that young
restricted drivers are more at
risk of having a serious crash
in the first six to 12 months of
driving solo on their restricted
licence that an at any other time
in their lives,” he said.
Crash Bash is led by the
city council, with funding
support from the New Zealand
Transport Agency.
The performance is developed
by the Court Theatre in
collaboration with Canterbury
Police.
