School’s bike track fundraiser

A FAMILY fun extravaganza
is in store for the Mairehau
community on March 8 in a bid
to raise funds towards
the proposed Mairehau bike
track.
More than $2000 worth of
raffle prizes are up for grabs at
the fair, hosted by St Francis of
Assisi Catholic School. Major
prizes include a Bunnings
playhouse and a $500 jewellery
voucher.
Fair organiser Heidi-Marie
Parsonson said the aim of the
event, aside from fundraising for
the bike track, was for families
to spend time together and get
to know other members of their
community.
“We’ve been developing as a
new school, with new staff and
introducing new families. We’re
just trying to make our mark as
a school that we want to service
our community,” Mrs Parsonson
said.
“We’re not trying to put any
limits or expectations on the fair,
but we’re trying to create a family
fun event for the community
and the wider city.”
St Francis of Assisi Catholic
School was an amalgamation of
Our Lady of Fatima and St Pauls
Schools as a result of the 2011

Said Mrs Parsonson: “We also
want to show that we’re a modern
learning environment, so we’ll
have a showcase area because we
have a maker space within the
school hosting wood and painting
workshops for kids.”
Funds from the raffle tickets
purchased during the fair will go
towards the development of the
Mairehau bike track which Mrs
Parsonson said would be a valuable
resource for the community
as there was nothing like it in
the area.
A wealth of activities will be
running on the day such as soft
archery, giant twister, bouncy
castles and vintage car rides.
Also on offer are silent auctions,
arts and crafts, international
cuisine and live entertainment.

Lack of condolence
book for Mike Moore
disappoints friend

A FRIEND of late prime
minister Mike Moore thinks
it is “damn rude” more was
not done to
commemorate him
in Christchurch.
Mr Moore, a
long-serving Labour
politician who
served Christchurch
as a member of
Parliament for 21
years, representing
Papanui,
Christchurch North
and Waimakariri,
died at the age of 71
on February 2.
A public funeral service was
held in Auckland on Friday.
Condolence books have been
provided to the public at
Parliament and were also be
available at the funeral service.
However, no condolence book
will be available in Christchurch.
Margaret Gibson who met Mr
Moore through her husband
Peter Gibson, who was involved
in the Labour Party while Mr
Moore was in office, said this

“He was our Minister for 21
years, surely somebody here should
have done something,” she said.
“We no
longer matter,

A Department
of Internal
Affairs visits and
ceremonial office
spokesman said
this was normal
practice. He
said if any local
government entity
chose to open their
own condolence
book
they would be welcome to do so.
City council manager of civic
and international relations Matt
Nichols said the city council
flew its flag at half-mast in
acknowledgement of Mr Moore’s
passing.
He said the city council
followed guidance from
the department on whether
condolence books are
appropriate upon the death of
prominent figures.
