Li Zhang Tan, 25, was living in Leeston when the offending happened. The Selwyn Times has learnt on about 12 occasions, Tan allegedly set up his cellphone in a pile of clothes on a bathroom floor after he showered, to film the woman while she was showering. The woman eventually discovered the camera, leading police to charge Tan with three charges of intentionally making an intimate visual recording of another person. He appeared in the district court last month and is expected to appear again tomorrow. Centre repairs could cost ratepayers • By Devon Bolger RATEPAYERS may have to pay an extra $5 a year to cover unplanned maintenance work on the Selwyn Aquatic Centre. Some fastenings in the ceiling were sent away for sampling and found to be cracking. Work will begin on replacing them all this month. A report presented to district councillors at a meeting last Wednesday outlined the work required. It is expected to cost an additional $690,000. The additional work is covered by funds allocated to undertake scheduled maintenance and renewal work as part of the main contract for the extension project. But the maintenance work that was already planned is expected to reach $785,000 and will now need to be funded by other means. The report said: “Although $690,000 of the maintenance is provided by existing budgets, the balance of $785,000 will need to be funded over time from an increase to the various aquatic centre rates. “Simplistically, if the $785,000 is funded over a 10-year maintenance cycle, the pool’s rates would need to lift by $5 per property from July 1, 2021.” The options for increasing the pool rates will be considered as part of the 2021-2031 Long Term Plan and will be part of public consultation on the plan. In November last year, there was a brief power outage at the aquatic centre which resulted in the air sock collapsing upon itself. The report said: “Although the power came on again the building management system that runs activities such as the air sock did not restart. “Instead there was a delay and when the air sock did inflate, it caused a huge amount of air to rush through the system at one time causing a number of fastenings to shear and break where the air sock was attached to the roof.” The metallurgist who sampled the fastenings found that all that were tested had stress corrosion cracking associated with any exposed surface, the report said. “The sampling report highly CRACK: Ceiling fastenings at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre need to be replaced adding an additional nearly $700,000 cost to the extension project. recommended that the fastenings are replaced with urgency to avoid unexpected sudden failures. “This result was obviously of a major concern because there are many different fixings and fastenings in the existing ceiling system.” For the work to be undertaken, the pools must be empty and closed to swimmers. “To avoid these issues it has been concluded that the work will be carried out of hours for five days a week on a rope access system. This work is estimated to take around eight weeks to complete,” the report said. Work on replacing the fastenings will begin this month and is expected to be completed in June. Saturday’s Selwyn Sounds a sell-out • By Matt Slaughter THE DISTRICT is gearing up for its biggest music event of the year, Selwyn Sounds on Saturday. All 10,000 tickets have sold out ahead of the Lincoln Domain event, which will include seven acts. The day will start with former Lincoln High School student Jed Parsons performing a set including songs from his critically acclaimed album Midnight Feast. Automatic 80s will then take the stage and this will be followed by a hit-filled set from New Zealand icons The Mockers. In the afternoon and evening, the crowd will be rocked by headliners Midge Ure the Voice of Ultravox, Zed, 10cc and Icehouse. Icehouse frontman Iva Davies told Selwyn Times in August the band will wind back the clock and put on a performance with just as much energy as they brought when they formed as Flowers about 40 years ago. “I’ve been working with some of these guys for 35 years and they are absolutely the most brilliant set of musicians that Australia has to offer, I’m completely confident in saying that,” he said. Event director David Parlane said it was a fantastic result to sell out a week before the event. “Our selection of artists has been a success, with our fans who enjoyed last year’s event returning, but also to a lot of first-timers experiencing the summer concert of 2020. The crowd is in for a real treat on the day and it looks like the weather is going to behave and we will have a beautiful Canterbury day,” he said. •VIP and express pass gates open at 9.30am and general admission gates will follow at 10am. Hororata Night Glow to return THE HORORATA Night Glow Festival will return in May next year. “The Hororata Night Glow is a community-run event that takes a huge amount of effort to make happen. With 2020 being the 10 th birthday for the Hororata Highland Games it is the right decision for our community to bring the Night Glow back in 2021,” Hororata Community Trust chairman Richard Lang said. The festival was launched in 2018 and held again last year with a huge crowd in attendance. “The popularity of the Hororata Night Glow is exciting, but it does bring some challenges operationally and we have a number of plans in place to manage this at the next event,” Mr Lang said. Said director Michael Oakley: “The balloonists love coming to Hororata and being part of our community. They are all really keen to come back. There are a number of new displays and attractions we are keen to add to the event.” • The Hororata Night Glow Festival will take place on May 8 2021.
