Bloodstone
4Alongside aquamarine, bloodstone – a type of quartz –
is the birthstone for March. Its name comes from its deep
red hematite inclusions, which look like drops of blood. Its
alternate name, heliotrope, means ‘to turn the sun’ in Greek,
as it was believed that if the gem were submerged in water,
the sun would turn red.
The RBA is
likely to
recommend
banks implement
standard ‘leastcost
routing’
for retailers,
particularly SMEs.

4The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA)
is investigating the merchant fees
associated with ‘tap and go’ payments and
smartphone-based services like ApplePay
and Google Pay. Frequently, payments
made through these mechanisms are
routed through international card
schemes run by Mastercard and Visa,
rather than the cheaper EFTPOS.
The Fairer Merchant Fees Alliance –
which includes the Australian Retailers
Association – estimates the extra fees
cost retailers $350–550 million per year.

promotion. Leap Day, February

veteran fainted on a
recent episode of TV series
Antiques Roadshow after
being told his Rolex watch was
worth $US400,000. The man
had initially purchased the
Oyster Cosmograph as a dive
watch while stationed in
Thailand in the 1970s, paying
$US345.97. He had kept it
in a safety deposit box for
four decades before having it
appraised on the show.
