THE CONVEYER belt of cycling
talent in Canterbury looks set
to continue with Avonside High
School’s Amelia Sykes.
Amelia, who won national
under-16 titles in 2019 in the
team sprint and team pursuit
led by Lincoln High School’s
Jenna Borthwick last year, has
excelled in her own right at
the national age-group track
championships in Invercargill
last week.
The under-17 rider stepped up
in the 2000m individual pursuit
final and in doing so broke the
national record set last year by
Borthwick, who has this year
progressed to make the New
Zealand team for the junior world
quiet street
• By Bea Gooding
RESIDENTS SAY they have been
failed in their bid to stop social
housing going ahead on their
quiet street.
The Christchurch Methodist
Mission’s plan to move 16 temporary
units from Linwood Park a
site in Guild St, Richmond, was
granted by a city council hearings
panel last week.
Residents cannot appeal the
decision because the mission’s
resource consent application was
non-notifiable, which means the
public can’t make submissions
on it.
The units were used at
Linwood Park for temporary
housing after the 2011 earthquakes.
Guild St resident Mike
Williams felt the process failed
his community especially for
those who have spent thousands
of dollars complying with the city
council’s rules and regulations
for the area.
“Many in the community
feel the same and have
legitimate concerns about this
proposal.
THE 46TH running of the Les
in recent times.
Runners, joggers and walkers
Event organiser Jon Holmes
8000 participants.
“It doesn’t matter if you
haven’t trained. Either distance
can be walked. It’s just about
getting out on a Sunday morning,
getting a breath of fresh
air and doing something that
gets the heart pumping,” said
Holmes.
The 14km event starts at 9am
at Pioneer Stadium, and the
6km event starts at 10am at
Hansens Park, all culminating
for a massive finish at Ferrymead
where there will be
plenty of entertainment and
prizes on offer.
Participants will also have free
Plans for the proposed nostopping
Veterinary practice
A Kidney Toxicity Survivor
Over the next 2 months, I thought id write
about two cases that required much input
and care from our entire team of experts. We
treat hundreds of sick patients weekly and
many of them spend weeks in our hospital
being nursed back to full health.
We have so many
special long term
patients that we all
connect with on
different levels but I
cant write them all up
here. We don’t have
favourites because
we love and want to
treat all the animals
that walk through our
doors. I chose these
two patients as they
highlight diseases we commonly see and
treat here and they also show incredible
owner commitment and positivity towards
the whole process. It has to be a team
approach and great communication is key.
I know we have the right team of people,
hospital setup and equipment to do our best
job possible but clients need to be onboard
for, at times, a long, complicated, emotional
journey. You can absolutely guarantee
though we will always do our BEST for your
pet.
TORIN is a young Birman who presented
suddenly unwell 3 months ago - lethargic,
losing weight, vomiting and just not himself.
After a series of testing we deemed Torin
was suffering from
Acute Kidney Failure
due to a suspected
toxicity (possibly
Lilies). His creatinine
kidney enzyme level
was through the roof
, he was dehydrated
and we suspected
a bacterial UTI. He
was immediately
admitted for intensive
care treatment with
intravenous fluids
and supportive care
medications. He spent 2 weeks as a hospital
inpatient receiving Intravenous fluids, food
and medications were fed to him through
a feeding tube in his neck and every day
his devoted owners visited and spent time
cuddling, grooming him and nursing him
back to good health. Once home he was
continually checked many times a week to
make sure he wasn’t deteriorating. Torin
was an incredibly tolerant and an easy to
handle patient which was lucky as he was
jabbed with needles constantly, had oral
medications daily and had every test possible
including radiographs and ultrasounds.
In the end, Torin survived his kidney
failure attack. When we was very unwell
his creatinine reading was greater than
1202umol/L - now
it is normal at
187umol/L. Many
patients wouldn’t
recover from this.
He had incredibly
special owners who
completely trusted
and listened to our
recommendations
and supported us
in his recovery by
visiting often, which was what Torin needed.
Kim encouraged him to eat one bikkie at a
time from her phone and he got to wander
around a room not being caged all day.
Our hospital nursing team was absolutely
A1 fantastic at catering for all his needs,
respecting him, treating him gently and
spending lots of time giving him cuddles and
grooms. We were honest with Torin’s owners
about his prognosis and the time required
for him to start showing improvement. In
this case I believe the feeding tube was the
game changer as we could deliver all his
medications and nutritional requirements
without going near his
mouth and he could be
successfully managed at
home, with the people he
loved and trusted.
We all get super excited
when we get to catch
up with Torin. He’s like a
member of the family and
we all feel proud that we
played a part in getting
him home. Without fail he
urinates in my room on
arrival- not sure what this means exactly, but
then I get cuddles so I’m taking that as a win.
If anyone has more questions or needs
advice regarding renal disease, please call
McMaster & Heap and ask to speak to me. We
have had an OPEN day for fabulous separate
cat ICU space but if anyone wants to have
Thousands raised for
Mairehau bike track
• By Bea Gooding
A SCHOOL fair has exceeded
organisers’ expectations after
raising nearly $30,000 towards
the construction of the Mairehau
bike track.
St Francis of Assisi Catholic
School hosted the family fun extravaganza
in early March to raise
funds for the bike track that will
be constructed on the school’s
grounds.
Fair organiser Heidi-Marie Parsonson
said it was a good chance
for the “fairly new” school to
work together on a large project.
“We were blown away by how
many people from our local community
joined us on the day. Our
children learned the importance
of serving and offering gifts to
help our community,” she said.
“We’re delighted because the
aim of the fair was to have a family
fun day and it was a chance to
work together. We believe that we
achieved in both of those areas.”
Nearly $2000 worth of raffle
prizes were up for grabs on the
day. Families were treated to a
variety of activities ranging from
soft archery, vintage car rides and
giant Twister, to international
cuisine and live entertainment.
The Mairehau bike track is a
community project and will be
open to all children in the area.
Local children also had a hand
in the track’s design with the
help of Kamo Marsh Landscape
Architects.
Described as a valuable resource
for Mairehau, the project
has encountered many setbacks
due to a lack of funding. But the
community were still determined
to put in the hard work and continue
fundraising and preparing
the area.
Said Mrs Parsonson: “We look
forward to sharing our bike track
which will be built using the
proceeds from the fair.
“It will benefit our community
GRATEFUL: The
St Francis of Assisi
Catholic School held
a fair this month
and raised nearly
$30,000 towards the
Mairehau bike track’s
construction.
providing a free, out-of-school
time activity which has been designed
to reflect the uniqueness
of Canterbury’s landscapes.”
The track’s design is a nod
towards Christchurch’s iconic
landscapes and is represented
throughout different elements
of the track such as a ‘Halswell
Quarry’ ramp area for scooters
and skateboards and a ‘Godley
Head/Crater Rim’ cycle track.
Pump track
delayed
• By Bea Gooding
INSTALLATION of the new
temporary pump track destined
for Shirley Community Reserve
has been delayed a second
time amid challenges with
international shipping.
Originally, the Shirley Pump
Track was to be installed by the
end of January, but delays with
the arrival of the pump track
sections impacted the project’s
timeline.
The city council hopes to open
the track by mid-April.
Said city council head of parks
Andrew Rutledge: “Challenges
with shipping have been due to
the track taking longer to get
onto the ship, and also due to the
longer port-clearing timeframes
related to the coronavirus.”
The 48-metre track is suitable
for bikes, skateboards and
scooters and is re-locatable. The
track itself is temporary because
it allows the area to be used for a
number of years while options are
kept open for future uses of the
space.
“We think this project will be
a positive one that encourages
people in the community to use
an under-utilised area,” said Mr
Rutledge.
PEGASUS POST
Readers have their say on
the recent articles on the
360 Trail group’s proposal
to build a pathway beside
the Bromley oxidation
ponds and the effect this
may have on birds
Spenser Holmes:
I read with interest your
article regarding the proposed
pathway near the migratory
birds in the estuary.
It seems to me that the answer
is blatantly clear – redirect the
pathway away from the birds.
The city council report puts
the risk to the birds as low to
moderate. Moderate sounds
scary and low is even too darn
high in a world where biodiversity
is on the run and even the
city council has declared for a
climate emergency.
The 360 trail people are thinking
like dinosaurs, it is a new
world out there and any nonessential
disturbance of nature
isn’t on. Having a pathway by the
water isn’t essential, nice maybe
but not essential. Maintaining
the health and viability of the
migratory birds is essential.
As for the city council, my oh
my, not a lick of common sense
there. Didn’t the fact that the estuary
is part of an internationally
recognised flyway register the
fact that extreme care was necessary
when planning the route of
the pathway, obviously not?
Emma Lynch:
I find it difficult to believe
that the proposed 360 walkway
will have a low to moderate
ecological effect.
Having witnessed the coastal
pathway remove the tern’s roosting
area, wading birds no longer
feeding up to the estuary edge
due to human disturbance and
dogs now being exercised in the
estuary bed, it is astonishing that
the 360 interest group proposes
that they are able to mitigate
against any environmental effects
of another walkway.
Many of the birds in the
estuary are already deemed at
risk or declining. We need to be
protecting this fragile estuary
ecosystem, and maybe, in this
case, leaving footprints is just
too damaging.
WHAT’S ‘HOT’ AT HOUSE OF TRAVEL SHIRLEY
Welcome to 2020 and we sincerely hope that all of our valued clients had a wonderful summer whether it be a
stay-cation in Aotearoa or a holiday abroad.
As most of you will be aware, we are all in the thick of dealing with the unprecedented
reaction to the Covid-19 virus. We wanted to take this opportunity to assure you all
that at House of Travel we are committed to helping our clients in any way possible
for them to continue on with their travels OR to assist in cancelling or deferring their
travel to a later date.
We understand the concerns and uncertainty this virus is causing some customers. As
the news continues to change, we appreciate it may be difficult to decide whether to
travel as well as where to and when.
We are constantly monitoring the situation to assess possible impacts to our
customers’ travel plans using reliable sources like the World Health Organisation
(WHO) and our own Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. We’re also in close contact
with our suppliers around the world and the welfare of our customers is front of mind
for us as this situation evolves.
If you are looking for credible, independent information about the risk and safety
of travel during the coronavirus outbreak, we recommend that you visit these
websites: WHO.int and SafeTravel.govt.nz, rather than relying on the news headlines
and social media.
On a positive note there are still many wonderful destinations you can visit that are
closer to home or areas largely unaffected by outbreaks and we encourage you to
consider some alternative options.
As part of our Better Together promise, we’re always here to help. This world is an
amazing place and we plan to keep exploring it for our customers.
Our team are a well -travelled bunch and have a real passion for getting out to see
more of our world. Here are some of the places that they have recently been to which
may interest you.
We look forward to welcoming you in store anytime to discuss your next holiday.
COVID-19
Coronavirus
How is Covid-19 spread?
What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a type
of coronavirus. There are simple steps you can take to protect you and your family/whānau.
How is it spread?
COVID-19, like the flu, can be spread from person to person. When a person who
has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, they may spread droplets containing the virus
a short distance, which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces.
You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then
touch your mouth, nose or eyes.
That’s why it’s really important to use good hygiene, regularly wash and thoroughly
dry your hands, and use good cough etiquette.
What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading?
•Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues.
•Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately.
•Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds).
•Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell.
•Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.
•Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people.
•Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs.
•Stay home if you feel unwell and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.
PEGASUS POST
Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or
could it be mainly my muscles?
The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with
a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and
senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints.
Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests
that a major part of the pain could be due
to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis.
“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason
for the pain may be the muscles around
the joint,” she explains. The images show
how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back
muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain
are the red areas in the drawings), a knot
in a muscle on the back of the shoulder
blade can give a deep pain in the front of
the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way
near the groin can give an ache in the knee
(especially at night in bed).
Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year
old client with severe arthritis who walked
with a stick, told her, “I will end up in
a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight
through my right leg due to pain in my hip
and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she
was walking with her stick but without the
severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was
one of the factors that made her muscles
spasm but the other was that older people
move less and the flexed position the hip
is in when we sit is particularly bad for
the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that
although the client was 89 and could have
been “given up on” or told to live with the
pain, she made a difference to her health
and wellbeing.
The same lack of movement can be the
reason for your knee pain or your shoulder
pain and the same few treatments could
make a huge difference for you.
At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques
(massage and triggerpoint deactivation
techniques) are used to release the muscles.
The client also gets a home exercise
program designed to mobilize and stretch
the joint, strengthen the important core
muscles and increase general strength and
balance. They teach a movement sequence
SHOULDER
PAIN
KNEE PAIN
that stretches the joint in all directions
whilst the client is able to lie safely on their
bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients.
In many cases having the muscles
released and being taught how to maintain
it, is enough to stay on top of the problem.
If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,
HIP PAIN
(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt)
some maintenance therapy may be
necessary, but that is often more affordable
and, for older patients, better tolerated
than surgery. After only one treatment
you should know that it will work for you.
Call them before the end of March and
save $20.00 on that treatment.
Physical Sense Gym and Physio is located at 300 Colombo Street, Sydenham. The Blue Line Bus stops in front of the door
and there is ample parking. To enquire about joint pain treatment, phone 377-2577 or visit www.triggerpoints.co.nz
FOCUS ON HEALTH
Grape seeds shown to have
remarkable health benefits!
According to researchers grape seeds
may hold the potential to treat and
prevent many devastating disorders.
The seeds have been found to contain
many powerful antioxidant such as
resveratrol, catechins, epicatechins,
proanthocyanadins and anthocyanins
as well as other nutrients that have
been shown to support the natural
healing process and even slow the
aging process.
Grape Seed Extract (GSE) has
been shown to reduce inflammation
and pain, increase cellular energy,
protect protein structures and
increase collagen production. The
powerful antioxidants in GSE can
tone and strengthen the blood
vessels, improve blood flow making
it valuable for circulatory disorders
of all kinds, including varicose veins,
haemorrhoids, hardening of the
arteries and impaired blood flow to
the brain. It is excellent for most skin
conditions because of the increase
of blood flow to the skin tissue thru
allowing more nutrients to the tissue
cells and better waste removal from
the cells. As well as this it supports
collagen production. For these reasons
many people report the skin looks
more healthy, smoother and with
better elasticity when using GSE.
GSE offers a natural alternative
for many people with hypertension
(High Blood Pressure). Higher than
normal blood pressure puts more
stress on organs and can lead to
atherosclerosis (hardening of the
arteries) and therefore increased risk
of heart disease (The heart has to
work harder to supply blood around
the body and may become enlarged
and eventually fail) and strokes.
Recent analysis of 16 randomized
studies on people with elevated blood
pressure found GSE to significantly
lower both systolic and diastolic blood
pressure but had no effect on people
with normal blood pressure. Animal
studies have shown GSE to improve
heart function, reduce damage caused
by heart attacks and prevent the
formation of foam cells that play a role
in the formation of arterial plaque.
A growing number of studies show
that GSE has powerful anticancer
properties in both the prevention and
treatment of many types of cancer.
Studies show arthritis of every type
may be greatly improved by GSE. GSE
also helps protect the body against
damage caused by diabetes while
helping balance blood sugar levels.
Another area GSE is proving highly
beneficial is the brain. It has been
shown to protect brain cells while
stimulating the formation of healthy
new brain cells. It may prove vital in
the treatment of brain disorders like
Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
There are numerous studies on
GSE that show it can help support
our good health and prevent many
degenerative diseases. Further
detailed information is available
from the Natural Health Advisers at
Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy,
PH: 388-5757. They are always happy
to help!
Your Smile is your business card
A smile is one of the first facial features to
catch a person’s eye. How does your smile
stand up? What colour are your teeth? Are
they off colour, tarnished or yellowing? Many
people refrain from smiling because of teeth
discolouration.
Sparklewhite to the rescue. Their whitening
system is backed by satisfied customers,
testimonials, likes and statistics to prove their
simple, one to two time whitening program
accomplishes the goal.
Don’t be embarrassed by your teeth. Everyone
knows the purpose of teeth is to mechanically
break down food items by cutting and
crushing them in order to prepare them to
be swallowed. Your teeth are the first point of
entry for beverages as well.
Are you aware coffee and smoking tarnish and
yellow tooth enamel. However, the two biggest
culprits of yellowing teeth are none-other than
tea and red wine, berries & coloured veges. Go
figure.
Tea & Red Wine stains occur when tannins
in both of them build up in the tooth enamel.
Tannins are organic substances found in
plants. Tannins in tea and wine can lead to
stains on teeth. In fact, some black teas can
even cause more tooth discoloration than even
black coffee!
There is an answer. Teeth whitening, but not
just any teeth whitening system will work. The
kind at the supermarket or the ones which the
pharmacies stock, are not strong enough to
give the quick results consumers are looking
for as they have a restriction on the strength of
peroxide sold over the counter.
Going to the dentist is more expensive,
however, there is a Certified tooth whitening
ADVERTORIAL
specialist in Christchurch, Sparklewhite Teeth,
who offer Cosmetic Teeth Whitening. Anyone
age sixteen and up can have the procedure
done. They also do couples whitening.
Whether a couple or friends, you can have
your session at the same time, in different
rooms of course, and get a discounted rate for
two!
The best part of the success rate of this service
is it only takes one or two times depending
on the assessment. Simple. Then you can
smile with confidence and never have to be
embarrassed by your smile again. Vouchers
HOME & HEATING
Ground moisture barrier
under low sub-floor
Now with the colder and wetter weather on
its way, home owners are focusing on ways
to make their homes comfortable, warm
and healthy for their families throughout
winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects
many of our older properties which suffer
from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier.
In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many
people have relocated to homes that suffer
from rising damp which can be associated
with health problems. Independent tests have
shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise
from the ground and enter a house every day,
leading to mildew, mould, condensation and
musty smells. Moulds can produce various
allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and
very young are especially vulnerable.
Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a
locally owned and operated firm. The team
understands the problems caused by rising
damp and are there to help. They will come
to your damp home and pump a lightweight,
flowable foam concrete under your timber
floored home.
While insulation is important, it has been
recognised that it is dampness that is the real
villain in the house. The new Healthy Homes
Standards introduced by the government
effective from the 1st July 2019 now has
a requirement to install ground moisture
barriers, a key element in the armory to fight
moisture in the home.
Dr Larry Bellamy BE (hons) PhD in a
report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under
Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed
the effects of placing Foam Concrete over
damp soil and had this to say: Condensation
on the underside of a timber floor can occur
where the floor is suspended over damp
ground and the inside air temperature falls
close to the crawl space air temperature.
Much energy is required to vaporize moisture
that penetrates the structure. By avoiding
underfloor condensation, foam concrete can
reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.
• Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd can in most
cases, install a Ground Moisture Barrier
under the suspended wooden floor of your
home, even when there is no crawl space.
• BRANZ Appraised; Appraisal Number 961
• Members of the Insulation Association of
New Zealand.
• We offer a free measure and quote in the
Canterbury region with no obligations.
• Assessments can be made in all other
regions by arrangement.
Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote
underfloor ground moisture barrier needs.
ATTACK RISING DAMP
What makes a great
heat transfer system?
There are a number of Heat Transfer
systems on the market. Smooth-Air
ventilation specialists offer a range of HTU
Heat Transfer Units with carefully selected
components to optimise the system:
They use insulated duct to transfer the
heated air with as little heat loss as possible.
The fan moves sufficient air for the distance
and number of rooms, without being noisy.
The diffusers send the heat to the floor, not to
skim the across the ceilings. All components
are good quality - designed to operate for
years without problems.
Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range of
options: One to four rooms, with or without
thermostat and with a choice of grilles
and diffusers. HTUs improve energy
efficiency in your house, as you are
using excess heat. They have low power
consumption - only 80watts for the three
room system. Circulating air through
the house also reduces the risk of damp.
You can also choose the HTU version
with downjet diffusers, which throw the
warm air downwards to the floor. These
downjet diffusers can also be adjusted to
regulate which room receives the most
warm air.
An average size living room requires
2-4 kw of heating, yet appliances such as
log burners generate heat in the region
of 10 -20kw. This leaves an excess of 8
-16kw of heat which sits at high level
in the heated room, usually above door
level.
Heat transfer units work best where
very hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer
near the ceiling. So heat pumps, which
circulate warm air around the room with
no layering, are not suitable as a heat source
by themselves. However, if you have both
log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer
systems with thermostat can work very well:
The heat pump stops operating once the heat
from the fire has heated the room, and the
heat transfer kicks in above this point, once
there is a layer of hot air at the ceiling.
Contact Smooth-Air on 0800 SMOOTH
PEGASUS POST
Elegant and stylish. Built for maximum
sun with panoramic views over Lyttelton
Harbour and surrounding hills across to
Quail Island.
Stroll up the driveway, past single garage
and carport up a few steps across a deck
onto the first level. Here you find three
double bedrooms. The master bedroom
has direct access to a lovely bathroom
containing a shower, king-size bath and
double his-and -hers sinks. A separate
toilet and laundry are also located on this
floor. Continue up the central stairway
onto the second level landing. Turn left to
the living, right to kitchen or diagonal to
access the rear of the property.
The private landscaped courtyard
provides all day living, ideal for that
morning cuppa to evening BBQs. Take
time to breath in the fragrant Jasmine
that adorns the trellis.
The light-filled open-plan kitchen/
dining area is the heart of the home. Here
stunning picture-perfect sea views from
the full-length dining room window
combine with high ceilings making for
that feeling of spaciousness.
Flow continues through to the living area
where a balcony off this room provides
additional living or entertaining space.
Stairs continue through the centre of the
house to a cleverly designed mezzanine
floor. Again, be spoilt with superb views
from the dining room windows. Having
its own shower and toilet makes this a
super fourth double bedroom, but if you
want space, light, and a “special spot” in
which to work from home, then this is just
the space. This is one of those properties
where careful planning, quality and
convenience for modern day living will
have you want to live here.
Lyttelton has become a sought-after
dynamic Port community with much to
offer from the Saturday market, cafes,
restaurants, to great entertainment. A
town that can boast having a number of
famous artists. Come join this thriving
township.
