Amelia, who won national 

under-16 titles in 2019 in the 

team sprint and team pursuit 

led by Lincoln High School’s 

Jenna Borthwick last year, has 

excelled in her own right at 

the national age-group track 

championships in Invercargill 

last week. 

The under-17 rider stepped up 

in the 2000m individual pursuit 

final and in doing so broke the 

national record set last year by 

Borthwick, who has this year 

progressed to make the New 

Zealand team for the junior world

upset with 

decision to

housing into 

quiet street

RESIDENTS SAY they have been 

failed in their bid to stop social 

housing going ahead on their 

quiet street. 

The Christchurch Methodist 

Mission’s plan to move 16 temporary 

units from Linwood Park a 

site in Guild St, Richmond, was 

granted by a city council hearings 

panel last week. 

Residents cannot appeal the 

decision because the mission’s 

resource consent application was 

non-notifiable, which means the 

public can’t make submissions 

on it. 

The units were used at 

Linwood Park for temporary 

housing after the 2011 earthquakes. 

Guild St resident Mike 

Williams felt the process failed 

his community especially for 

those who have spent thousands 

of dollars complying with the city 

council’s rules and regulations 

for the area.

feel the same and have 

legitimate concerns about this 

proposal.

Big turnout likely for 

Run or walk

THE 46TH running of the Les 

Mills City2Surf will be held on 

Sunday and this year’s event 

looks set to be one of the biggest 

in recent times. 

Runners, joggers and walkers 

of all fitness levels will take on 

either the 14km or 6km options, 

both finishing at Ferrymead 

Playing Fields. 

Event organiser Jon Holmes 

says entries are up on last year’s 

event which attracted close to 

8000 participants. 

“It doesn’t matter if you 

haven’t trained. Either distance 

can be walked. It’s just about 

getting out on a Sunday morning, 

getting a breath of fresh 

air and doing something that 

gets the heart pumping,” said 

Holmes. 

The 14km event starts at 9am 

at Pioneer Stadium, and the 

6km event starts at 10am at 

Hansens Park, all culminating 

for a massive finish at Ferrymead 

where there will be 

plenty of entertainment and 

prizes on offer. 

Participants will also have free 

entry into Ferrymead Historic 

Park. 

“We’re going fizzy-free again 

this year. We’ve also changed 

from a free Powerade to a 

free Pump at the finish line. 

That’s another step in the right 

direction for health,” said 

Holmes.

Veterinary practice 

A Kidney Toxicity Survivor 

Over the next 2 months, I thought id write 

about two cases that required much input 

and care from our entire team of experts. We 

treat hundreds of sick patients weekly and 

many of them spend weeks in our hospital 

being nursed back to full health. 

We have so many 

special long term 

patients that we all 

connect with on 

different levels but I 

cant write them all up 

here. We don’t have 

favourites because 

we love and want to 

treat all the animals 

that walk through our 

doors. I chose these 

two patients as they 

highlight diseases we commonly see and 

treat here and they also show incredible 

owner commitment and positivity towards 

the whole process. It has to be a team 

approach and great communication is key. 

I know we have the right team of people, 

hospital setup and equipment to do our best 

job possible but clients need to be onboard 

for, at times, a long, complicated, emotional 

journey. You can absolutely guarantee 

though we will always do our BEST for your 

pet. 

TORIN is a young Birman who presented 

suddenly unwell 3 months ago - lethargic, 

losing weight, vomiting and just not himself. 

After a series of testing we deemed Torin 

was suffering from 

Acute Kidney Failure 

due to a suspected 

toxicity (possibly 

Lilies). His creatinine 

kidney enzyme level 

was through the roof 

, he was dehydrated 

and we suspected 

a bacterial UTI. He 

was immediately 

admitted for intensive 

care treatment with 

intravenous fluids 

and supportive care 

medications. He spent 2 weeks as a hospital 

inpatient receiving Intravenous fluids, food 

and medications were fed to him through 

a feeding tube in his neck and every day 

his devoted owners visited and spent time 

cuddling, grooming him and nursing him 

back to good health. Once home he was 

continually checked many times a week to 

make sure he wasn’t deteriorating. Torin 

was an incredibly tolerant and an easy to 

handle patient which was lucky as he was 

jabbed with needles constantly, had oral 

medications daily and had every test possible 

including radiographs and ultrasounds. 

In the end, Torin survived his kidney 

failure attack. When we was very unwell 

his creatinine reading was greater than 

1202umol/L - now 

it is normal at 

187umol/L. Many 

patients wouldn’t 

recover from this. 

He had incredibly 

special owners who 

completely trusted 

and listened to our 

recommendations 

and supported us 

in his recovery by 

visiting often, which was what Torin needed. 

Kim encouraged him to eat one bikkie at a 

time from her phone and he got to wander 

around a room not being caged all day. 

Our hospital nursing team was absolutely 

A1 fantastic at catering for all his needs, 

respecting him, treating him gently and 

spending lots of time giving him cuddles and 

grooms. We were honest with Torin’s owners 

about his prognosis and the time required 

for him to start showing improvement. In 

this case I believe the feeding tube was the 

game changer as we could deliver all his 

medications and nutritional requirements 

without going near his 

mouth and he could be 

successfully managed at 

home, with the people he 

loved and trusted. 

We all get super excited 

when we get to catch 

up with Torin. He’s like a 

member of the family and 

we all feel proud that we 

played a part in getting 

him home. Without fail he 

urinates in my room on 

arrival- not sure what this means exactly, but 

then I get cuddles so I’m taking that as a win.

Thousands raised for 

Mairehau bike track 


A SCHOOL fair has exceeded 

organisers’ expectations after 

raising nearly $30,000 towards 

the construction of the Mairehau 

bike track. 

St Francis of Assisi Catholic 

School hosted the family fun extravaganza 

in early March to raise 

funds for the bike track that will 

be constructed on the school’s 

grounds. 

Fair organiser Heidi-Marie Parsonson 

said it was a good chance 

for the “fairly new” school to 

work together on a large project. 

“We were blown away by how 

many people from our local community 

joined us on the day. Our 

children learned the importance 

of serving and offering gifts to 

help our community,” she said. 

“We’re delighted because the 

aim of the fair was to have a family 

fun day and it was a chance to 

work together. We believe that we 

achieved in both of those areas.” 

Nearly $2000 worth of raffle 

prizes were up for grabs on the 

day. Families were treated to a 

variety of activities ranging from 

soft archery, vintage car rides and 

giant Twister, to international 

cuisine and live entertainment. 

The Mairehau bike track is a 

community project and will be 

open to all children in the area. 

Local children also had a hand 

in the track’s design with the 

help of Kamo Marsh Landscape 

Architects. 

Described as a valuable resource 

for Mairehau, the project 

has encountered many setbacks 

due to a lack of funding. But the 

community were still determined 

to put in the hard work and continue 

fundraising and preparing 

the area. 

Said Mrs Parsonson: “We look 

forward to sharing our bike track 

which will be built using the 

proceeds from the fair.

Pump track 

delayed 


INSTALLATION of the new 

temporary pump track destined 

for Shirley Community Reserve 

has been delayed a second 

time amid challenges with 

international shipping. 

Originally, the Shirley Pump 

Track was to be installed by the 

end of January, but delays with 

the arrival of the pump track 

sections impacted the project’s 

timeline. 

The city council hopes to open 

the track by mid-April. 

Said city council head of parks 

Andrew Rutledge: “Challenges 

with shipping have been due to 

the track taking longer to get 

onto the ship, and also due to the 

longer port-clearing timeframes 

related to the coronavirus.” 

The 48-metre track is suitable 

for bikes, skateboards and 

scooters and is re-locatable. The 

track itself is temporary because 

it allows the area to be used for a 

number of years while options are 

kept open for future uses of the 

space. 

“We think this project will be 

a positive one that encourages 

people in the community to use 

an under-utilised area,” said Mr 

Rutledge.

division one boys volleyball 

title at the Mainland 

Volleyball Championships at 

Christchurch’s Pioneer Stadium. 

Shirley Boys’ went through the 

tournament undefeated with the 

event showcasing the top senior 

secondary school teams from 

Canterbury, Marlborough and 

Nelson, Otago and Southland. 

Shirley Boys’ beat Waimea 

College in four sets 26-24, 22-25, 

25-18, 25-21. 

The team cruised through 

pool play, beating Marlborough 

Boys’ College in four sets, Middleton 

Grange in four sets, and 

Burnside High School in four 

sets and Otago Boys’ Blue in 

three sets on their way to the 

final. 

Riccarton High School A 

finished third after beating St 

Andrew’s College 25-22, 26-24, 

25-20 in the playoff for third. 

Burnside A finished sixth, 

Lincoln High School managed 

eighth and Middleton Grange 

were 11th.

I read with interest your 

article regarding the proposed 

pathway near the migratory 

birds in the estuary. 

It seems to me that the answer 

is blatantly clear – redirect the 

pathway away from the birds. 

The city council report puts 

the risk to the birds as low to 

moderate. Moderate sounds 

scary and low is even too darn 

high in a world where biodiversity 

is on the run and even the 

city council has declared for a 

climate emergency. 

The 360 trail people are thinking 

like dinosaurs, it is a new 

world out there and any nonessential 

disturbance of nature 

isn’t on. Having a pathway by the 

water isn’t essential, nice maybe 

but not essential. Maintaining 

the health and viability of the 

migratory birds is essential. 

As for the city council, my oh 

my, not a lick of common sense 

there. Didn’t the fact that the estuary 

is part of an internationally 

recognised flyway register the 

fact that extreme care was necessary 

when planning the route of 

the pathway, obviously not? 

Emma Lynch: 

I find it difficult to believe 

that the proposed 360 walkway 

will have a low to moderate 

ecological effect. 

Having witnessed the coastal 

pathway remove the tern’s roosting 

area, wading birds no longer 

feeding up to the estuary edge 

due to human disturbance and 

dogs now being exercised in the 

estuary bed, it is astonishing that 

the 360 interest group proposes 

that they are able to mitigate 

against any environmental effects 

of another walkway. 

Many of the birds in the 

estuary are already deemed at 

risk or declining. We need to be 

protecting this fragile estuary 

ecosystem, and maybe, in this 

case, leaving footprints is just 

too damaging.

fantastic resorts to choose 

from, has some lovely 

beaches and good snorkelling as well. We also 

recommend a visit out to Malamala Island which 

gives you a taster of island life in Fiji. 

Last year Aimee visited the 

islands of Bali. She loved 

the vibrant atmosphere 

of Bali and there is a lot 

to see and do. She also 

visited the outer islands of 

Gili Trawangan which were 

off the beaten track, no 

cars and plenty of time to 

sunbathe and snorkel.

How is Covid-19 spread? 

What is COVID-19? 

COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It’s caused by a type 

of coronavirus. There are simple steps you can take to protect you and your family/whānau. 

How is it spread? 

COVID-19, like the flu, can be spread from person to person. When a person who 

has COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or talks, they may spread droplets containing the virus 

a short distance, which quickly settle on surrounding surfaces. 

You may get infected by the virus if you touch those surfaces or objects and then 

touch your mouth, nose or eyes. 

That’s why it’s really important to use good hygiene, regularly wash and thoroughly 

dry your hands, and use good cough etiquette. 

What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading? 

•Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues. 

•Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately. 

•Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds). 

•Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell. 

•Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. 

•Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people. 

•Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs. 

•Stay home if you feel unwell and call Healthline on 0800 358 5453.

Roasted snapper makes miso happy

Forget the line-up of pots 

and pans and try this 

simple one-dish roasted 

miso butter snapper with 

broccolini 

Miso butter snapper with 

broccolini 

Serves 2 

Ingredients 

1 Tbsp white miso paste 

25g softened unsalted butter 

2 180g skinless snapper fillets 

1 tsp sesame oil 

2 small red chillies, thinly sliced, 

plus extra thinly sliced to serve 

1 Tbsp soy sauce 

1 Tbsp peanut oil 

2 bunches broccolini, halved 

lengthways 

150g enoki mushrooms, stalks 

trimmed – if you can’t find them, 

just leave them out 

1 tsp sesame seeds 

Juice of ½ lime 

Thinly sliced spring onion, to 

garnish 

Directions 

Preheat the oven to 200 deg C. 

Line a baking dish with baking 

paper. 

Combine miso and butter, then 

spread over snapper. Combine 

sesame oil, chilli, soy sauce and 

peanut oil in a bowl. 

Add broccolini, mushrooms 

and sesame seeds, toss to combine, 

then spread over the base of the 

prepared baking dish. Top with 

snapper. 

Roast for 18-20min until 

snapper is just cooked and the 

broccolini is tender. 

Creamy rice pudding with 

plum compote 

Serves 4 

Ingredients 

1 cup (uncooked) white medium 

grain rice, cooked to packet 

instructions 

2 Tbsp cornflour 

250ml milk 

300ml thickened cream 

1 egg, beaten 

1 tsp vanilla extract 

Plum compote 

400g red-flesh plums 

1 cinnamon stick 

¼ cup caster sugar 

¼ cup (60ml) port 

Directions 

For compote, place all 

ingredients in a pan with ¼ cup 

water, stirring to combine. Bring 

to the boil over medium-high

and simmer for 8-10min until 

the plums are soft and liquid is 

syrupy. Cool slightly, or chill for 

up to five days if desired. 

Combine cooked rice and 

remaining ingredients in a pan 

over medium-low heat. Cook for 

5min, stirring, until thick and 

creamy. 

Serve pudding topped with 

compote.

Joint pain: Do I have arthritis or 

could it be mainly my muscles? 

The team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with 

a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and 

senior clients visit complaining of pain in one of their joints. 

Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests 

that a major part of the pain could be due 

to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. 

“Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason 

for the pain may be the muscles around 

the joint,” she explains. The images show 

how a muscle knot (the crosses) in a back 

muscle can give hip pain (aches and pain 

are the red areas in the drawings), a knot 

in a muscle on the back of the shoulder 

blade can give a deep pain in the front of 

the shoulder and a muscle knot all the way 

near the groin can give an ache in the knee 

(especially at night in bed). 

Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year 

old client with severe arthritis who walked 

with a stick, told her, “I will end up in 

a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight 

through my right leg due to pain in my hip 

and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she 

was walking with her stick but without the 

severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was 

one of the factors that made her muscles 

spasm but the other was that older people 

move less and the flexed position the hip 

is in when we sit is particularly bad for 

the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that 

although the client was 89 and could have 

been “given up on” or told to live with the 

pain, she made a difference to her health 

and wellbeing. 

The same lack of movement can be the 

reason for your knee pain or your shoulder 

pain and the same few treatments could 

make a huge difference for you. 

At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques 

(massage and triggerpoint deactivation 

techniques) are used to release the muscles. 

The client also gets a home exercise 

program designed to mobilize and stretch 

the joint, strengthen the important core 

muscles and increase general strength and 

balance. They teach a movement sequence

that stretches the joint in all directions 

whilst the client is able to lie safely on their 

bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. 

In many cases having the muscles 

released and being taught how to maintain 

it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. 

If severe arthritis is the underlying cause,

(the crosses are the areas of the muscle spasms, the red areas is where the pain is felt) 

some maintenance therapy may be 

necessary, but that is often more affordable 

and, for older patients, better tolerated 

than surgery. After only one treatment 

you should know that it will work for you.

Ground moisture barrier 

under low sub-floor 

Now with the colder and wetter weather on 

its way, home owners are focusing on ways 

to make their homes comfortable, warm 

and healthy for their families throughout 

winter. Rising damp is an issue that affects 

many of our older properties which suffer 

from poor, or no, ground moisture barrier. 

In Canterbury especially, post-quake, many 

people have relocated to homes that suffer 

from rising damp which can be associated 

with health problems. Independent tests have 

shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise 

from the ground and enter a house every day, 

leading to mildew, mould, condensation and 

musty smells. Moulds can produce various 

allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and 

very young are especially vulnerable. 

Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a

report dated 1988: Foam Concrete Under 

Timber Floors: An Energy Analysis assessed 

the effects of placing Foam Concrete over 

damp soil and had this to say: Condensation 

on the underside of a timber floor can occur 

where the floor is suspended over damp 

ground and the inside air temperature falls 

close to the crawl space air temperature. 

Much energy is required to vaporize moisture 

that penetrates the structure. By avoiding 

underfloor condensation, foam concrete can 

reduce floor heat losses by up to 90%.

What makes a great 

heat transfer system? 

There are a number of Heat Transfer 

systems on the market. Smooth-Air 

ventilation specialists offer a range of HTU 

Heat Transfer Units with carefully selected 

components to optimise the system: 

They use insulated duct to transfer the 

heated air with as little heat loss as possible. 

The fan moves sufficient air for the distance 

and number of rooms, without being noisy. 

The diffusers send the heat to the floor, not to 

skim the across the ceilings. All components 

are good quality - designed to operate for 

years without problems. 

Smooth-Air’s HTUs come in a range of 

options: One to four rooms, with or without 

thermostat and with a choice of grilles 

and diffusers. HTUs improve energy 

efficiency in your house, as you are 

using excess heat. They have low power 

consumption - only 80watts for the three 

room system. Circulating air through 

the house also reduces the risk of damp. 

You can also choose the HTU version 

with downjet diffusers, which throw the 

warm air downwards to the floor. These 

downjet diffusers can also be adjusted to 

regulate which room receives the most 

warm air. 

An average size living room requires 

2-4 kw of heating, yet appliances such as 

log burners generate heat in the region 

of 10 -20kw. This leaves an excess of 8 

-16kw of heat which sits at high level 

in the heated room, usually above door 

level. 

Heat transfer units work best where 

very hot air has ‘stratified’ into a layer 

near the ceiling. So heat pumps, which 

circulate warm air around the room with 

no layering, are not suitable as a heat source 

by themselves. However, if you have both 

log burner and a heat pump, heat transfer 

systems with thermostat can work very well: 

The heat pump stops operating once the heat 

from the fire has heated the room, and the 

heat transfer kicks in above this point, once 

there is a layer of hot air at the ceiling.
