THE NEXT GENERATIONAPPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMME HITS 30 YEAR LANDMARKAdditive manufacturing specialist Ricoh iscelebrating a landmark anniversary at thestart of National Apprenticeship Week 2020.It was back in 1990 that Ricoh launched itsown apprenticeship programme to unearthand develop the next generation of talent inthe West Midlands.Exactly three decades on and the successof the apprenticeship scheme is evident inthe workforce of a company which is nowgrowing and investing in cutting edgetechnologies in 2D and 3D printing.Scores of youngsters have completedapprenticeships, with a focus on providingreal career and progression opportunities,and 35 remain with the business today.That number includes Mark Dickin, whonow heads up the Ricoh 3D printingdepartment in his role as AdditiveManufacturing and Moulding EngineeringManager, and began his apprenticeship in1999.Over 20 years later and the newest successin the Ricoh 3D team is Junior EngineerMyles Jarman, who has recently completedhis Technical Apprenticeship.Myles, who is a 22-year-old from Telfordand began his apprenticeship straight fromschool, said: “It has been fantastic for me.“I had the option of doing this or going touniversity and I’ve no doubts in my mindthat I made the right decision.“Ricoh is a fantastic company foryoungsters looking to go down theapprenticeship route and I would encourageanyone thinking of applying for thisopportunity in the future to grasp it.“The company covers all your trainingand gives you the chance to learn on the job.“We have also been involved in externalprogrammes to aid our development, such asan outward bound experience in Aberdoveywhere we had first and third yearapprentices at Ricoh join forces for a weekand combine our skills to carry out problemsolvingexercises.“I’m now part way through an additionaltwo-year Manufacturing Engineering degreeat Wolverhampton University.“I’m heavily involved in the day-to-dayoperations of Ricoh’s 3D printing operation,including machine and process optimisationand evaluation, design and productionsupport.“I’m really excited to be involved in anindustry which has huge potential and isevolving at such a pace“The apprenticeship has given me thechance to look to the future with a level ofconfidence I wouldn’t have had otherwise.”Ricoh’s Apprentice Academytraditionally offers Commerical,Engineering, Production Print and ToolMaking apprenticeships, and has nowstarted recruiting degree apprentices inaddition.Claire Shepherd, Learning andDevelopment Officer at Ricoh, said: “Theapprenticeship programme has been hugelysuccessful over the last 30 years and we areextremely proud of what we have achievedin that particular area of the business.“We have made a substantial investmentin young talent and the rewards are there forall to see, with a number of fully qualifiedteam members who have committed theirlong-term futures to the business.“I can only see the apprenticeshipprogramme at Ricoh continuing to go fromstrength to strength in the future.
