GRINDINGGANDTRACK AND GT GRINDING USE FIRST-CLASS WALTERTECHNOLOGY TO PROVIDE FIRST-CLASS TOOLINGThere is no coincidence that the continuedsuccess of tooling specialist Gandtrack andsister company GT Grinding have beenmirrored by their regular investment inWalter tool grinders and automaticmeasuring machines. Since the WalterHelitronics were installed – Gandtrackbought its first machine in 2000 - theOldham-based tool manufacturing andregrinding firms have enjoyed impressivegrowth in the supply of solid carbide, PCDand carbide brazed tip tooling.From its impressive facility in Lancashireas well as establish (in 1996) a direct salesoperation in India and, since 2009, itsGandtrack Asia manufacturing base inMalaysia. All operations serve primarilycompanies involved in thecomposite/aerospace machining sector aswell as, for example, motor racing andmaritime engineering.With 28 employees between them,Gandtrack and GT Grinding – the latterfocusing on low-volume batch work as wellas modifications to specials while Gandtrackconcentrates on production volumes - haveinstalled a host of Walter tool grindingtechnology from Walter Ewag UK, a memberof the United Grinding Group.A total of 12 Walter machines (10Helitronic tool grinders and two Helicheckinspection machines) have been purchasedover the years. And while in each successivecase, the new machine has resulted in ahigher level of production efficiency, it isGandtrack’s latest investment - a HelitronicPower with robot loader - that ideallyillustrates why Walter remains the toolgrinding technology of choice for ManagingGandtrack’s Helicheck 3D and Helicheck Advanced tool inspection machinesGandtrack Director Adrian Jones with the Walter Helitronic Power with robot loaderDirector Brian Hirst and his managementteam, including Director Adrian Jones.“The demonstrations showed that wecould halve the machining times and,importantly, not produce any scrap. It was ano-brainer!” says Mr Jones.Explaining that the process allows thetailstock to be removed from the reamers forthe completion of end work, Mr Jones alsohighlights how the use of probing inconjunction with the tailstock/chuck “meansthe exact position of the flutes can simply bedetermined”.The choice of a robot loader instead ofWalter’s Eco loader, which Gandtrack/GTalready have on four machines, was alsodetermined by practicality as well as by thepotential for increased production, says MrJones.Continues Mr Jones: “The combination ofthe latest Helitronic Power and its automatictailstock along with the robot loader hasresulted in an output level that our reamercontract can’t keep pace with [200-300 of eachreamer size for the past 12 months]. That’sgreat news, of course, and it means we couldswitch other work to the Power whileperhaps also releasing another machine toour plant in Malaysia, to join the HelitronicMini Power already there.”Underpinned by the longevity and costeffectivenessof the Walter Helitronicgrinders, Mr Jones pinpoints the machines’Tool Studio functionality as one aspect thatGandtrack finds particularly indispensable.With integrated Wizard technology for easeof use, Tool Studio 3 includes a host ofroutines for ‘what you see you can grind’ fasttool production simulation, parameterchanges and operation.Gandtrack’s policy of investing in thelatest Walter technology – which includes sixHelitronic Power machines and a two-in-oneHelitronic Power Diamond for carbide andPCD grinding/erosion - to not only meetcurrent demand but also create additionalcapacity, has been complemented by otherinitiatives that enable it to ‘work smarter’.Interestingly, everyone at Gandtrackstarted with the company as an apprentice -indeed, one of its team recently won a YoungApprentice of the Year award – and, says MrJones, “while the company is accredited toISO 9001 and AS 9100 and all our processesare obviously in line with these qualityapprovals, every one of us is also driven bythe same desire: to always provide customerswith a first-class product and a first-classservice”.Tel: 01926 485047Email: neil.whittingham@waltermachines.deWebsite: www.walter-machines.com14 Manufacturing Machinery World, April 2020
