30In an age of information overload in ourIndustrialised Western society, it seems thatolder voices are neither heeded nor needed.Sadly, at a time when healthcare advancesare allowing people to live longer and theworld has more wise and experienced seniorcitizens than ever before, olderpeople are having to fight for therespect they believe is their due.According to the OxfordDictionaries respect is “A feeling ofdeep admiration for someone orsomething elicited by their abilities,qualities, or achievements”. But ifolder people have lost their status asguardians of our communal knowledge, canthey demand respect on the grounds of ageand experience alone? Twenty-somethingLifestyle blogger Michael Tawiah expressesthe views of many young people today whenhe says: “Respect should be a choice and nota forced thing ... personally, I’m not going torespect someone just because they tell me to.”Angie Jardine, a commentator on the websiteSoapboxie.com, believes that young peoplecan still benefit from listening to the stories ofRespect your elders?parents and grandparents: “Would we havelearnt anything about how a civilised societyshould be run if the survivors of two worldwars and, in particular the Holocaust, had nottold their stories to someone who listened?There is usually some tantalising nugget ofinformation in thereminiscences of old folk fromwhich something can belearned about the past andwhere we came from.”Today it’s not just warm wordsof wisdom that older peoplebring to the table.
