38The seeds for the earliest computers weresown at the beginning of the nineteenthcentury.It is Charles Babbagewho is usually creditedwith the invention of thecomputer.Born in 1791, heconceived a steamdrivenprogrammableengine able to work outmathematical problems.Sadly Babbage neverTech - the birth of the computerCharles Babbage’sDifference Engine No 1.lived to see his computer built, but amongsthis many drawings and plans he left behindsuch a detailed technical design for‘Difference Engine No. 2’ that the ScienceMuseum’s curator decided to undertake theproject in the 1980s. Finished in 2002, itworks accurately, produces printouts, andweighs five tons.During the late 1880s population growth inthe United States meant that the governmentwas struggling to calculate its censusfigures. So in 1890 Herman Hollerithdesigned a punch card system to automatethe task. He saved the government $5 millionand in the process established the companythat went on to become IBM.Alan Turing is often described as the fatherof modern computers. In 1936 he inventedthe concept of the ‘Turing Machine’, capableof universal calculation. Theoretically themachine had limitless memory, could readdata, write results, and store a program ofinstructions just like a modern computer.Turing’s computer was not built , althoughhis contribution to the Bombe which brokethe Germans’ Enigma Code during WorldWar II is well-known.After several electro-mechanical versions,between 1943 and 1944 two Americanprofessors, John Mauchly and J. PresperEckert, constructed the first electroniccomputer. It was 1,000 times faster than anypreviously, measured 800 square feet andhad 18,000 vacuum tubes. From this cameUNIVAC, the first commercial computerlaunched in 1946.The first computer languages were COBOL,invented by Grace Hopper in 1953 andFORTRAN (FORmula TRANslation),developed by a team of programmers atIBM. Written in a programming languagecalled C, the UNIX operating system wasuseable across multiple platforms. Itsubsequently became the standard formainframe computers.The 1960s saw the development of thecomputer mouse, graphical user interfaceand the invention of the floppy disk, pavingthe way for the availability of PCs to thegeneral public. Until then computers had onlybeen used by the military, government andcommercial companies.Self-confessed computer geeks Paul Allenand Bill Gates founded Microsoft in 1975 andtwo years later the two Steves – Jobs andWozniak – launched Apple Computers.Surprisingly the first IBM PC, running on MSDOS, wasn’t unveiled until 1981 while Applewas busy developing its longstanding rival,the Mackintosh.In the last twenty years computer technologyhas smashed through the glass ceiling withthe invention of the Internet and networkingusing Wi-Fi and broadband. I wonder ifCharles Babbage would have believed that acomputer that once filled a whole room nowfits in our pockets.
