chapped lips, cracking and bloody hands
my body’s remembrance of that unforgiving wind
it’s iowan winter again and
two snows
the ground, frozen
the walk to class, sliding
on ice, amusement
fall, get tuition
the bitter cold is more than i was ready for
stripping human to bones
and bones to fragility
it’s the humbling reminder of
being only
so much
on one’s own
and although my face burns
my fingers reach for my coat pockets
my legs itch from exposure
i’m warmer than i’ve ever been before
