The brutish sounds of the street flow as constantly as the somber waters of
the Seine
Mundane words in all tongues tangle into bird chirps from the trees
The shouts of con artists echo where troubadours used to sing
Chewed up gum litters the top of an emperor’s arch
A graceful god-like statue sits amidst a forest of street signs
Graffiti lines the side of the new bridge of old
Construction crates rest above the sloshing tides
A cigarette butt rides on the river’s current
Sirens heard from the road pollute the sunny breezes
Cameras click as life goes by
and all at once I see
these sins washed away by the Seine
