He smiles at me,
I freeze aghast,
There’s blood in his mouth.
He frowns, I apologize,
Smile back.
He can’t talk, but then again, neither can I.
So I sit beside him,
Rest my hand in his hair,
Rub my thumb on his forehead.
I hope it’s soothing –
I don’t know how to comfort a dying man.
I want to stay with him as long as I can,
But this day has exhausted me.
Everyone says it’s fine to go to bed,
So I quietly tell my dad to wait ‘til morning.
