Su Schmerheim combines love for animals,
trucking as professional horse hauler
“Whoever said, ‘Find a job you love, and you’ll
never work a day in your life’ was talking about
me,” said Su Schmerheim, paraphrasing a quote
attributed to Mark Twain, the pen name of Samuel
L. Clemens.
Schmerheim has combined a love of trucking
with an older love of horses, and now makes her
living running the U.S. division of Ecclestone
Horse Transport. She’s also the Women In
Trucking March 2020 Member of the Month.
Before hauling horses, Schmerheim
participated in a far different field. “I sailed racing
sailboats in the U.S. and Canada for 30 years,” she
said. “I’ve sailed solo in everything from 19-foot
to 55-foot boats, and I crewed for two years on an
85-foot schooner.”
Passionate about horses since her teenage
years, Schmerheim still shows Arabian and half-
Arabian horses near her Michigan home. She said
the opportunity to make a living working with the
animals she loves was too good to pass up. After
losing a job in web support, Schmerheim was
put in touch with a woman-owned horse-hauling
business in northern Michigan.
“She asked if I had worked with horses,”
Schmerheim explained, “and said it was easier to
teach someone driving than how to handle horses.”
She was invited to ride along on a day trip. “We
clicked,” Schmerheim said, and soon she had her
CDL.
That business later downsized and Schmerheim
began working with her current employer,
Queensville, Ontario-based Ecclestone Horse
Transport (EHT). She had met EHT President
Kyle Ecclestone about a year earlier, online, when
he was in the market for used commercial horse
equipment. “I almost quit hauling horses,” she said,
“but Kyle wouldn’t let me.”
Today Schmerheim handles U.S. logistics for
EHT, performing some customer-service duties
such as quoting rates, as well as doing some of the
dispatching and, of course, driving. EHT doesn’t
skimp on the equipment; Schmerheim drives a
custom Kenworth T800 pulling a custom-built
Doyle 15-horse trailer.
“We haul some of the top Arabs (Arabian breed
of horse) in the U.S. and Canada,” she said, “and
we have international clients, too.” Many of the
horses participate in shows for the U.S. Equestrian
Federation and other associations.
“(These are) primarily show horses,” said
Schmerheim, “and some Olympic clients, and
then horses that have been sold and are going to
new owners. Anyone who wants to move horses.”
Included are “snowbirds” who spend winters in
Florida and want their horses nearby while there.
“We call it the ‘Florida Season,’” she said.
Transporting horses takes some special driving
skills in addition to knowledge of the cargo. “You
always have to be alert to being cut off in traffic,”
she said, “because you can’t brake hard. It’s kind of
like hauling liquids in that you have to take curves
and corners slowly.”
One important difference is that liquids don’t
fall over in the trailer and get injured when the ride
gets rough. Delivering an expensive horse that has
been injured during the trip isn’t an option, but
other problems can have an impact on the animal’s
show or race performance.
“They can get sore muscles from leaning
and bracing against the movement of the truck,”
Schmerheim explained. Even stress can be a
problem, as horses that are stressed are more
difficult to handle and may not eat and drink
properly.
“Each horse is an individual,” said Schmerheim.
Su Schmerheim of Michigan loves her job.
She has had a love for horses since she
was a teenager and now makes her living
running the U.S. division of Ecclestone Horse
Transport.
“If you’re a ‘horse person,’ you learn how to tell
when they’re stressed or they aren’t feeling well.”
For many trips, the horses don’t require any
special care other than smooth driving. “When we
do mixed (multistop) loads, we give them hay and
water and make sure they are traveling well,” said
Schmerheim. For longer trips, horses can be put in
“box stalls” that allow them room to walk around
and even lay down. Hay can be placed on the floor,
where horses can graze “naturally” by reaching
down to eat. This helps prevent a condition known
as “shipping fever.” Each shipment is different.
Still, Schmerheim prides herself on service and
attention to detail. “All horses on my truck get the
same treatment,” she said, “whether it’s a $200
‘mutt’ or a ‘bazillion-dollar’ thoroughbred.”
Since livestock haulers are exempt from ELD
requirements, drivers at EHT still use paper logs.
That’s fine with Schmerheim. “How can a box tell
you when to sleep?” she asked.
Schmerheim has participated in a few truck
shows, including the Trucker’s Jamboree in
Walcott, Iowa, the Shiawassee County (Fair)
Truck Show in Corunna, Michigan, and the
Richard Crane Memorial Truck Show in St. Ignace,
Michigan, where she was presented with Women
In Trucking’s Member of the Month award by
association President and CEO Ellen Voie. While
the shows are fun and rewarding, Schmerheim
doesn’t plan to enter many. “It takes a lot of work to
clean everything to show standards,” she explained,
“and it means shutting down for a while to do the
work.”
Her care for animals goes beyond the livestock
in the trailer. It extends to her “co-driver” Jake
as well. Formerly a “wild barn cat,” Jake is now
a constant companion and EHT ambassador.
The 6-year-old gray and white tabby has its
own Facebook page (Jake Schmerheim) and
is a registered service animal. The sound of an
air brake being applied sends him rushing to the
nearest window. “He loves to go trucking and has
traveled more miles than most people have,” said
Schmerheim. “He knows his own truck and will go
to it and hop up on the step.”
He also responds to the terms “cookies,”
“kitty-crack” and “big truck.” Always on a leash
when outside of the truck, Jake accompanies
Schmerheim into truck stops and restaurants and is
well known among her clients, who often inquire
about him. The names “Su” and “Jake,” along with
a paw print, are stenciled on the driver’s door of
Schmerheim’s tractor.
With Jake at her side, Schmerheim said she
plans to continue pursuing the career she loves
for some time. “My goal is to get there safely, no
wreckers and no veterinarians,” she said. Horses in
Schmerheim’s trailer, along with one lucky cat, can
rest easy knowing they’re in for a smooth ride.
ATA joins President Trump
in recognizing nation’s truck
drivers at White House
On Thursday (April 16), American Trucking
Associations joined President Donald Trump at
an event on the White House lawn to recognize
the critical role the nation’s truck drivers play
in America’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the event, Trump and Transportation
Secretary Elaine Chao lauded truckers as heroes
for their efforts during the crisis.
“In the war against the virus, America’s
truckers are really the foot soldiers that are carrying
us to victory,” Trump said. “Truckers are
playing a critical role in vanquishing the virus,
and they will be just as important as we work to
get our economic engine roaring.”
Several professional drivers were invited to
the podium to share personal stories of delivering
critical goods during the pandemic, from
hand sanitizer to medical supplies.
“As a professional driver, I am proud to
stand here representing my fellow drivers out
there doing the important work of delivering
for America,’ said Stephen Richardson, a driver
with Triple G Express in Decatur, Alabama. “I
am proud to be a truck driver, and I am especially
proud of the work all of the drivers are doing
now in response to this crisis.”
In addition to Richardson, Charlton Paul of
UPS Freight, Chester in New York and Tina Peterson
of FedEx Ground/Ravenwood Transport
in Blaine, Minnesota, spoke of their experiences,
and received a gold key from Trump, which
he called an expression of thanks for their essential
work.
A truck from ATA-member FedEx Ground
and the ATA’s image truck, Interstate One,
served as a backdrop for the President’s remarks.
“President Trump is absolutely correct in
calling America’s truck drivers ‘the lifeblood of
our economy.’ As he said, they truly are ‘brave,
bold and incredible’ heroes,” said Chris Spear,
president and CEO of ATA. “We thank the president
and Secretary Chao for recognizing these
drivers, who are touching the lives of Americans
in a very tangible way, and for appreciating the
hard work and sacrifice these men and women
are making to deliver shipments of food, medicine
and other crucial supplies to the frontlines
of the fight against this virus.”
Cummins is temporarily shifting its focus from diesel-engine components to
PPE in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cummins partners with 3M
to produce PPE components
in response to COVID-19
pandemic
Cummins has reached an agreement with 3M
to manufacture high-efficiency particulate filters
for use in 3M’s Powered Air Purifying Respirators,
or PAPRs.
Powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs)
are an important piece of equipment for frontline
health care workers responding to the COV-
ID-19 pandemic. PAPRs use a battery-powered
blower that sends filtered air into a hood or head
top that covers the wearer’s head or face. The
devices can provide increased levels of respiratory
protection, especially for critical health
care situations such as aerosol-generating procedures.
PAPRs may also be more comfortable to
wear for those who need respiratory protection
for long periods of time.
The partnership has the potential to more
than double the current production of filters for
3M’s PAPRs. The additional filters are needed as
3M has ramped up production of PAPRs to meet
a surge in demand for personal protective equipment
due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
“Cummins has been striving to find ways
to help during the COVID-19 crisis,” said
Tom Linebarger, chairman and CEO of Cummins.
“Working with 3M, we discovered our
technologies and manufacturing expertise
could be relevant as we partner in new ways
to help protect health care professionals.”
Cummins will use existing manpower
and equipment at its Neillsville, Wisconsin,
facility to pleat the media, assemble it into
cartridge housings and do final testing before
shipping the filters to Valley, Nebraska, where
3M’s PAPRs are manufactured. Production of
the filters at Cummins’ Neillsville location is
expected to begin by the end of April.
“3M continues to work around the clock
to get personal protective equipment, including
PAPRs, to the heroic health care workers
and first responders on the front lines of
the COVID-19 fight,” said Mike Roman, 3M
chairman of the board and CEO. “Our partnership
with Cummins will help us produce
more of this critical equipment in the coming
months.”
Cummins’ filtration business designs,
manufactures and sells air, fuel, hydraulic and
lube filtration, as well as chemical technology
products for diesel- and gas-powered equipment
around the world.
Women In Trucking partners
with Espyr to support drivers’
health
PLOVER, Wis. — Women in Trucking Association
(WIT), a nonprofit organization that
promotes the employment and recognition of
women in the trucking industry, and Espyr, a
provider of customized behavioral health solutions,
have teamed up to support the health of
professional drivers. The partnership will provide
truck drivers who are members of WIT
with 90 days of free access to Espyr’s Fit to Pass
coaching program and iResolve, Espyr’s CDL
driver-support hotline.
Even in normal times, truck driving can
be taxing on driver’s physical and mental
health. Add the impacts of COVID-19 — including
fear of contagion, closed restaurants,
and limited availability of restrooms and showers
— and the toll on drivers’ health can be substantial.
Espyr’s Fit to Pass is a customized coaching
program designed to improve the health
of professional drivers and help them meet the
physical requirements of the DOT recertification
exam. iResolve is a tele-mental health solution
that provides immediate support for drivers’
mental health and work-life related issues. Drivers
and their family members can speak with an
Espyr mental health professional without an appointment
— and without waiting.
“We are so pleased to be able to provide
this much needed support to our driver members,”
said Ellen Voie, President and CEO
of WIT. “Professional drivers are among the
many unsung heroes helping us to live through
these difficult times and we’re very grateful to
Amazon for providing the funding for these programs.”
Espyr CEO Rick Taweel added, “Thank
you, WIT and Amazon, for helping us support
professional driver health. While COVID-19
has created a mental health strain for everyone,
the impact on professional drivers is especially
significant because we all rely on them for the
essentials of everyday life.”
Espyr’s professional driver health services
will be provided to all current WIT members
who are drivers thanks to the generosity of Amazon.
“Our concern is for the nation’s drivers who
have to cope with the added challenges brought
on by COVID-19 on a daily basis and need the
support these programs can provide,” said Chris
Heine, Amazon’s director of transportation and
WIT board member. “Drivers have always kept
America moving. Now, more than ever, we need
to care for them like they care for the products
they haul.”
Espyr and Women In Trucking have
teamed up to offer 90 days of free
access to the Fit to Pass program.
Mack Trucks aims to ease driver strain
with Command Steer for Class 8 Anthem
Mack Trucks is looking to make the job
of the highway truck driver easier with the
introduction of Mack Command Steer in the
Class 8 Mack Anthem. Mack Command Steer,
the latest in driver-assist technology, will be
available for order on Mack Anthem models
beginning in the second quarter of 2020. Mack
made the announcement at the ATA Technology
& Maintenance Council annual meeting.
A highly advanced active steering system,
Mack Command Steer adds an electric
motor to the existing hydraulic steering to
help reduce driver effort up to 85% and improve
driver productivity and comfort.
“Even with the all-day comfort provided
by the Mack Anthem model’s ergonomic interior,
driving a heavy-duty truck remains a
highly physical task,” said Stu Russoli, Mack
highway product manager. “With Mack
Command Steer, we’re helping reduce driver
fatigue and muscle strain by up to 30%,
improving safety and productivity, as well as
helping to protect the truck’s most valuable
asset: the driver.”
Mack Command Steer provides variable
steering assist based on the driving
situation. Multiple sensors throughout the
truck monitor road conditions, driver input
and even environmental elements, relaying
those observations more than 2,000 times
per second. The system’s electric motor
then applies additional torque as needed to
the steering, making it easier to keep the
truck on the desired path.
“The additional torque, or steering
force, provided by Mack Command Steer
means drivers no longer have to ‘fight the
wheel’ while driving on poor roads or in
difficult weather conditions,” Russoli said.
“This helps drivers maintain greater control
and keep their focus on what’s ahead,
enhancing safety for everyone on the road.”
Even in normal driving situations, Mack
Command Steer helps suppress road disturbances
such as potholes or other surface
irregularities, smoothing the steering feedback
and reducing the possibility of steering-wheel
“kicks.”
Another unique capability of Mack Command
Steer is a return-to-zero feature that
automatically returns the steering wheel to
the center, or zero, position, helping simplify
maneuvers in tight spaces, whether going
forward or in reverse.
Command Steer, the latest in driverassist
technology, in Mack Anthem
productivity and comfort.
Onboard optical-imaging technology
can help carriers ensure trailer readiness
Spireon Inc., a company that provides aftermarket
telematics solutions, unveiled the
next phase in the evolution of its proprietary
IntelliScan cargo-sensing technology with the
release of Image Capture and Retrieval earlier
this month.
Launched in 2018, IntelliScan features
advanced detection methods using a combination
of optical imaging and laser time-of-flight
sensing to achieve 99.9% accuracy in cargo
detection. With IntelliScan, the FleetLocate
trailer-management solution can reliably and
environmental conditions, even with
varied or irregular load types, including “soft”
cargo such as carpet or paper. With the newest
phase of IntelliScan, the artificial intelligence
and machine learning that detects cargo also
captures what it sees, arming carriers with
visual images that can help combat detention
and ensure trailer readiness.
“How many times have you wished you
had eyes inside your trailer when you’re trying
to validate a detention bill? How many
times have you sent a driver for a trailer only
to find it’s still loaded?” asked Roni Taylor,
senior vice president of strategy and business
development at Spireon. “With IntelliScan,
not only will you know with unprecedented
accuracy when a trailer is loaded or empty —
now you can see it, save it and share it.”
The ability to capture images from inside
trailers will revolutionize the way carriers
manage drivers, trailers and business relationships.
With IntelliScan Image Capture and
Retrieval, carriers can:
• Increase detention billing accuracy and
improve shipper practices with proof of load/
unload;
The latest addition to Spireon’s
IntelliScan technology is the
ability to capture images from
inside trailers, helping carriers
combat detention and ensure
trailer readiness.
• Keep drivers driving by ensuring a trailer
is empty before scheduling pickup;
• Improve worker safety and lower liability
by detecting cargo load shift before doors
open;
• Minimize cargo damage and increase efficiency
by detecting improper loading;
• Resolve claims confidently with timestamped
images that prove or disprove cargo/
trailer damage; and
• Recover stolen cargo and aid in prosecution
with time-stamped documentation.
“They say a picture is worth a thousand
words; in the transportation industry, it’s
worth countless dollars,” said Jim AuBuchon,
president and CEO at Premier Trailer Leasing.
“Image Capture and Retrieval is a game
changer for us and our leasing customers.”
Kenworth adds option for DEF tank with
steps
Kenworth has introduced a new, optional
diesel-exhaust fluid (DEF) tank with integrated
steps designed for the manufacturer’s T680
and T880 models.
With this option, the access steps to the
plate are mounted directly over the DEF tank
without requiring additional frame space. This
placement of the steps can free up as much as
16 inches — nearly a foot and a half — of valuable
frame space, which is ideal for truck operators
with constrained frame-space layouts.
The resulting shorter wheelbase can further
enhance the maneuverability of the T680
and T880, especial in tight urban areas or on
job sites.
The option is available with Kenworth’s
21-gallon, medium-size aerodynamic DEF
tanks for use with the T680 and T880. The
new option is not available with full or partial
chassis fairings.
