We are very eager to reopen to the public, however the health, safety, and well-being of our patrons, staff and the
community at large, is our top priority. Library staff is currently working on modifying many of our services, processes,
and procedures so we can eventually safely reopen to the community. We will keep you informed.

As our community struggles to navigate these challenging times, we want you to know
that we are still here to help. We can help you find services and resources, support
your new homeschooling responsibilities, answer your questions, and so much more.
A few of us are working at the library, far apart from each other, and far from you,
but we are answering the phones for the City of Burbank and for our library patrons.
Good News! Virtual programming will continue this month.

A Note from the Director
Greetings to everyone as we head into the third month of staying Safer at Home. As the COVID-19
pandemic has evolved, it’s hard to believe we thought we would be getting back to normal after a few
weeks. It’s clear now the pandemic and the its economic fallout will have long-term implications for
our community and the entire world.
As part of the essential infrastructure that is local government, Burbank Public Library staff have
remained active throughout the closure. We have a small team on-site each week answering the City
COVID-19 hotline. Staff respond to about 400 inquiries each week regarding the changing rules, regulations and programs
for everything from virus testing to eviction protections to small business loans. It’s as new to us as it is to you but also
a good demonstration of the value of information professionals who can help identify accurate sources, distill complex
instructions, and guide people to helpful resources. Isn’t that, after all, what a public library is all about?
We’ve also been learning how to provide online programming, which will be a part of our future for many months.
Online storytimes and book clubs don’t feel quite the same, but with each one, we reach new people, hear new
voices, and hopefully provide a little joy in your days. We have put additional resources into our eBook, eAudiobook
and streaming services (Libby/OverDrive and hoopla) both for entertainment and to support families that are schooling
at home.
As we look forward to a gradual reopening and restarting of our services, we will keep the community’s needs at the
forefront. We are preparing to offer enhanced services for job seekers and students, safe methods for exchanging library
materials, and a growing suite of educational and entertainment programming. It will take time to recover from this crisis,
but working together, we can emerge more connected, more nimble and more responsive, playing our part in restoring a
strong Burbank community.
We certainly miss your presence here at the libraries, and we hope you and yours are doing well.

A Good Friend
The Friends of the Burbank Public Library have
received a donation of nearly $300,000 from the
estate of long-time member and volunteer Jane Mulder.
Ms. Mulder, who passed away in 2019, was a charter
member of the Friends of the Library organization,
which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020. The
Friends are a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to supporting
Burbank Public Library programming and services via
fundraising activities.
After a career as a schoolteacher at Burbank’s Roosevelt Elementary School, Ms. Mulder
turned her talents toward volunteerism. Starting in 1989, she assisted the Library’s
efforts to computerize its catalog, working full-time alongside staff. Having managed
the school library during her time as a teacher, Ms. Mulder remained dedicated to
developing children’s love of reading, volunteering with the Library’s Summer Reading
Program. As a teacher, she was also involved with the school choir and sports activities.
Ms. Mulder worked in the used bookstore operated by the Friends in the Buena
Vista Branch Library from its opening in 2002 until health issues in her early 90s
brought an end to her service. She was able to attend the grand opening of the
Friends’ second bookstore at the Central Library in 2017. For many years she
organized the Friends semi-annual book sales, from set-up to take-down and she
was often the first to arrive each morning and last to go home.
In 2007, Ms. Mulder was awarded the first Volunteer of the Year honor from the
Friends of the Library, recognizing her three decades of service often at upward of
1,000 hours per year. It was later renamed in her honor. The Jane Mulder
Outstanding Volunteer Award is given to a volunteer who goes above and beyond

Director. “She was tireless in
her dedication to every aspect
of the Library, and we are
grateful for her lasting impact.”
— and it is only awarded when the Friends
identify someone who has emulated Mulder’s
dedication and work ethic. “Jane Mulder was the
gold standard of volunteers,” said Louise Paziak,
President of the Friends of the Burbank Public
Library.
Ms. Mulder recognized the Friends of the Library
as one of the primary charities to benefit from
her estate. In March 2020, the Friends accepted
a donation of $297,365.94 presented by Ms.
Mulder’s attorney, Mr. Bob Bowne. The funds
will support Library programs and materials,
innovations in Library services, and capital needs.
Ms. Mulder’s contributions will be recognized by
the Burbank City Council on May 12, 2020.

Our online-only book club was formed to bring us together in a time of social distancing. We
missed our patrons and wanted to find a new way to connect the reading community.

The California Small Business Loan Guarantee Program
(via IBank) is making available $50 million in state funding,
providing potential capital for individuals who do
not qualify for federal funds.
Small Businesses located in California with 1-750
employees that have been negatively impacted or
experienced disruption by COVID-19 and nonprofits
are eligible.

help. Universal Class offers high quality, online courses to help
you learn the skills needed to achieve your goals.
Isabelle, our Workforce Development Librarian, put together
this list of a few of the offered courses:
Business Branding 101

Digital Libraries Are Open
While our buildings may be closed, there are several
interesting digital libraries that remain open. We thought
you might like to “visit” a few of them.
CIA’s FOIA Electronic Reading Room
Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)
The DPLA is an online collection of over 37 million free digital
materials from libraries, archives and museums. Its digital
exhibitions and primary sources cover everything from the
1918 influenza pandemic to the golden age of comic books.
Looking for digital data to make you feel like a secret agent? Look no further than the Central Intelligence Agency’s
Freedom of Information Act Electronic Reading Room. The online collection houses items from FOIA and CIA release
programs, including more than 50 years of CIA information on UFOs and a collection dedicated to the oldest classified
documents in the US.
New York Public Library
The New York Public Library’s online collection contains nearly 890,000 digitized items. Its archives and manuscripts
cover books, prints, photographs and more unique collections, like a massive database of over 17,000 historical
restaurant menus.
Getty Publications Virtual Library
The Getty Publications Virtual Library hosts an impressive collection of art books, with more than 300 publications
that can be read and downloaded for free, including some that are out of print.
