Tony Hadley’s Visit to Lichfield is Pure ‘Gold’ ................................ Whittington-based charity, St Giles Hospice, welcomed pop star and former Spandau Ballet frontman Tony Hadley on Wednesday 4th December. He created a ‘glow’ when he visited, meeting patients, staff, volunteers and visitors throughout the hospice. Tony also handed over a £4,000 donation from the proceeds of his Lichfield Festival charity concert at Lichfield Cathedral. Backed by his six-piece band, Tony delighted fans with a selection of his classic hits, songs from his new album and a sprinkling of festive favourites at Tony Hadley Live on Tuesday 3rd December. The concert was presented by Lichfield Festival and Lichfield Cathedral, sponsored by City Jewellers of Lichfield, in aid of Lichfield Festival and St Giles Hospice. Tony, who is a patron of Lichfield Festival, visited the hospice with Festival Chair Helen Wiser and Festival Director Damian Thantrey the following day to hand over the cheque, and they were given a tour of the facilities by St Giles Group Chief Executive Emma Hodges. Tony said: "St Giles Hospice is an amazing place - I didn't know what to expect but I was bowled over. It's an incredible and beautiful building and the staff have been so fantastic - their friendliness shines through. "St Giles is a really happy place with a beautiful atmosphere and it's been a real privilege to come along and meet everybody. I’m full of admiration for the work that they do." Award-winning Branston Golf & Country Club has been sold by Roger Kerry and the Kerry family to a group of local individuals which include Ben Laing, Managing Director at the golf club since 2013. The club, which is situated at Branston near Burton-on-Trent, was Roger’s initial concept and vision and he has overseen all stages in the successful growth and evolution of the club over the past 25 years. Established in 1992, the initial development phase included an 18-hole championship golf course, leisure facility complex including a swimming pool, and clubhouse. The club opened its doors to members and guests two years later in October 1994. Subsequent investment has seen the addition of a golf driving range and retail outlet, a second 9-hole golf course, outside hot-tub and spa area, as well as a purpose-built conference, banqueting and wedding Roger Kerry and Ben Laing venue (The Pavilion). The club also has a creche, independently owned hair and beauty salon, treatment rooms, physio services, and extensive free on-site parking. Membership continues to thrive across all the categories which include peak and off-peak Health & Fitness, 7-day and 5-day golf (which automatically includes health & fitness), and academy golf. Roger Kerry said: “As I approach my 80th birthday, and after 25 years of hard work establishing a premium facility serving a large and loyal membership, I wanted to make sure that anybody taking over the club would continue the high standards and offerings that underpin Branston. I’m therefore delighted that the club will continue to operate under independent ownership and with strong local connections.” 24
LDC’s Local Plan ......................... The council is asking local people, developers and organisations, including parish councils, to consider its draft Local Plan Preferred Options document. This sets out how the council thinks the district should be developed over the next 20 years and takes local views into account.
