No-stopping restrictions
for busy Spreydon street
• By Bea Gooding
ISSUES OF safety, speed
and property access were the
deciding factors as to why
no-stopping restrictions will
be installed on a busy Spreydon
street.
The Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board approved the
proposal to place yellow lines on
alternating sides of Rosewarne
St in response to concerns from
residents in the area.
Yellow lines will be placed on
one side of the road before swapping
to the other side halfway
through.
To accommodate the new restrictions,
some 15min car parks
will be removed on the street
which had a daily traffic average
of 500 vehicles.
Said city council acting transport
operations manager Stephen
Wright: “The no-stopping
restrictions will help slow down
vehicles, to address speeding
concerns and makes it safer for
people who are walking nearby.
“Cars parked on both sides on
the narrow street makes it hard
to drive down. If drivers meet an
oncoming car, they sometimes
need to reverse a fair way to allow
the other vehicle to pass.”
After a site investigation, city
council staff found vehicles
parked in an unsafe manner
at some sections of the road by
blocking footpaths.
Advantages of the yellow
lines would improve access for
the residents and large vehicles
passing by such as emergency
vehicles and service trucks.
The current layout prevented
these larger vehicles from accessing
the street due to parked cars
on both sides of the road.
Some residents were initially
against the proposal and opted
for speed bumps instead, arguing
that the lines would make people
speed as they used it as a short
cut.
Said Mr Wright: “Yellow lines
along just one side of the street
risks creating a clearway for people
to speed down. This is why
the council proposed installing
the lines on alternating sides of
the street, offering a balance of
parking on both sides.”
The city council will be
installing the changes within
the next two weeks.
Yellow lines
to improve
safety
NO-STOPPING restrictions
will soon be put in place on two
streets in southern Christchurch.
THe Spreydon-Cashmere
Community Board approved the
restrictions prohibiting vehicles
from stopping at any time on
parts of McCarthy St, Hoon Hay,
and Kanuku Pl, Cashmere.
Said city council acting manager
of transport operations Stephen
Wright: “Residents originally
raised safety and access concerns
with vehicles parking in these
locations. Restricting parking for
a short length of McCarthy St will
make bus-turning movements
safer and easier.
“Kanuku Pl already had some
lengths of stopping restrictions
to help with access, however,
there is a gap where parking is
unrestricted on both sides of the
street.”
Mr Wright said the new
restrictions will be installed in
the next two weeks.
Safety concerns were raised at
these locations due to restricted
visibility, minimal turning radius
and reduced road width caused
by on-street parking.
