Sales and Marketing
During a Global
Crisis: COVID-19
By Mandy Holm, Denim Marketing
It is all over the news – COVID-19 (coronavirus),
a pandemic. For companies and employees
trying to continue moving forward with work,
we are in challenging times. Yet, so much of
what we do today is done on the computer and
online. Can we mitigate the damage this illness
is causing by focusing on what we can do online?
Let’s talk about sales and marketing during a
global crisis, in particular during coronavirus.
Here are some ideas of what you can do:
Focus Online
Host virtual meetings: use FaceTime, Skype,
GoToMeeting, or a myriad of other tools to
host meetings. These tools allow face-to-face
interaction (something people are missing
presently), and they also provide the ability to
give a virtual tour of a model home. Focus on
selling and answering questions via online chat
– something you should consider adding if you
don’t already have. Typically, live or online chat
can increase virtual leads by an average of 40%
and conversions by more than 45%.
Rethink social media strategy and send
potential customers to your website (versus a
physical location) to gather information, shop
virtual tours, and continue looking around, thus
continuing the shopping process. Think, “visit us
online” versus “stop by today.” When marketing
on social media during a crisis, you want to make
sure you are providing the information they
need to keep you in the consideration process.
Audit social media sites to ensure that they
are fully built out and have all the latest
information, photos, and videos on them. Add
3D tours or anything unique to enhance sites
and provide more information. This might be a
good time to update Pinterest and encourage
new home shoppers to select design options.
Beef up your website with new information.
Get creative and ask yourself what you can
add. Now may be the time to revisit adding
interactive floor plans or virtual tours.
Add more video with live footage on Facebook,
Instagram, or other social sites. Give tips, tour
model homes, show your agents onsite, etc.
8 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
Now is also a good time to explore text
messaging or SMS marketing apps. We all
know customers would rather text than talk.
In fact, I think we have all become millennials
in this way! According to Media Post, 67%
of customers would rather send and receive
text messages to communicate about
appointments versus using email or the phone.
The MobileMonkey app provides a myriad of
services to streamline texting with clients and
customers.
Focus on Remarketing
What do you already know about your
customers that you haven’t had time to dig into?
This is a great time to remarket to customers
who have visited your website or opened an
email. If you have not yet set up the Facebook
Pixel, Google Pixel, or LinkedIn Insight Tag,
take time to do so now. Once all are running,
remarket to those potential customers via
targeted ads on Facebook, Google, the Google
ad network, or LinkedIn. Additionally, email
marketing tools such as Mailchimp, Constant
Contact, and many CRMs show when prospects
open and click. Dive into this data and
determine what additional information can be
sent next to keep them interested or help them
take the next step.
Make it Personal
Find out what they need and want, then cater
to their hot buttons. Email a BombBomb video
or text photos of the product/community
they expressed interest in. Treat them to an
SPECIAL ATLANTA SHOW EDITION 2020 9
exceptional, but virtual, personal experience.
If sending mass email, personalize these with
a greeting and the recipient’s first name. The
overall goal is to catch their attention, anticipate
their needs, and remain relevant without
becoming creepy!
Don’t forget to include multi-lingual messaging,
particularly regarding updates, so every
constituent knows the latest facts and what
is going on. You know your buyers and target
audience, make sure to include all of them.
Revisit Social Media Advertising
Update social media ads to be as interactive as
possible. Use videos when possible and have the
ads click through to videos and 3D tours on your
website. Do not encourage people to stop by,
especially if you are not open. Instead, encourage
online shopping!
We can all do our part to prevent the spread of
coronavirus, but we can still continue working in
creative and thoughtful ways to keep business
moving forward while also safeguarding the
health of our employees and customers.
Professional
Engineers in the
Construction
Industry
By Betty Jean Jordan, PE, MS4CECI
Engineers play an important role in
construction, designing plans for structures
and site layouts and sometimes providing
construction oversight. Anyone who completes
an accredited engineering degree program can
properly claim to be an engineer, but only a
licensed professional engineer (PE) can sign
and seal construction documents.
How does an engineer become licensed? He
or she first becomes an “engineer intern” (EI)
or “engineer-in-training” (EIT) by passing the
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. The
exam typically is taken shortly before or after
graduation from an engineering program
approved by the engineer’s state licensure
board. Next, the EI or EIT completes four years
of qualifying engineering experience under
the supervision of a PE. (Note that additional
years of experience are required in Georgia for
those with an engineering technology degree.)
The EI/EIT then may take the Principles and
Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. Passing
the PE exam is just the beginning of being a
professional engineer. A PE must continue to
hone his/her professional skills and maintain
licensure through continuing education.
Engineers have powerful reasons both
professional and personal for earning and
maintaining a PE license. Licensure is the mark
of a professional. It designates dedication,
skill, and quality. In fact, the first fundamental
canon of the Code of Ethics of the National
Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE)
states that “Engineers, in fulfillment of their
professional duties, shall hold paramount the
safety, health, and welfare of the public.” Just
as the CPA defines the accountant, and a law
license defines the lawyer, a PE license tells
the public that the engineer has mastered the
critical elements of his/her profession and
demonstrates a commitment to the highest
standards of engineering practice.
In addition to needing a license to sign and
seal engineering documents for public or
private clients, only PEs can be in responsible
charge of a firm in private practice or serve as
a fully qualified expert witness. A PE license
offers flexibility, opening such career options
as becoming a specialist or opening one’s own
business. It can even offer protection during
industry downsizing or outsourcing. Studies
have shown that PEs also tend to earn higher
pay throughout their careers.
Having a PE license has opened professional
doors to me. After spending most of my
career in civil engineering private practice,
12 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
several years ago I expanded into teaching
erosion and sedimentation (E&S) control
certification classes. Georgia state law
requires certification for anyone involved in
the construction industry. The Georgia Soil
and Water Conservation Commission oversees
the E&S education and certification process.
Three levels of certification are offered. Level
1A certification is required for people in the
field, including developers, builders, and site
superintendents. Level 1B certification is
required for regulatory enforcement personnel,
who typically work for a local government
or the Georgia Environmental Protection
Division. Level II certification is required for
design professionals (people who prepare
E&S plans) and plan reviewers (people who
review plans on behalf of local governments
or the state). I prepare E&S plans as a private
consultant in addition to teaching E&S control
certification classes. My PE license allows me
to be certified as a Level II design professional
and to teach all three levels of E&S control
certification classes.
To be effective in the construction industry,
an engineer must have more than strong
technical skills. He/she also much be able
to communicate well in both written and
verbal contexts and know something about
government, regulations, finance, and other
interrelated topics. Being a PE helps develop
and integrate this broad skill set. NSPE and
its state affiliates, such as the Georgia Society
of Professional Engineers (GSPE), are ready
to help professional engineers develop these
skills as we serve the public.
To join NSPE/GSPE, visit
1B, Level II, and recertification classes, visit
What Mass
Timber Can Do
for Georgia’s
Forests
Sustainable building is putting the
spotlight on local, high-tech wood
The Kendeda Building for Innovative
Sustainable Design, in Atlanta, is as impressive
as any spaceship. Located on the Georgia Tech
campus, the structure is the largest academic
building in the Southeast to be certified as a
Living Building.
Upon completion, the exterior will have an
array of over 900 photovoltaic panels and a
fully functioning rooftop garden with an apiary
and berry orchard. Inside, rainwater flows into
a large cistern, which can be treated and used
on-site, and water-cooled pipes, which are
embedded in the floors, reducing the need for
air conditioning. Taken together, these features
will help the edifice generate about five percent
more electricity than it needs.
But what’s even more impressive is the
construction itself, which relies heavily on
wood. Columns and beams, made from gluelaminated
timber (glulam), hold up 489 ceiling
panels of nail-laminated timber (NLT), built
using 25,000 linear feet of locally salvaged twoby-fours.
While these elements give the interior
a more organic look than, say, the offices
at Cape Canavereal, the Kendeda Building
nevertheless resembles a place where your
great-great-grandchildren might go to school.
When I visited the building in July, it was late
in the afternoon, and I was struck by how the
high ceilings and tall windows let in pools of
natural light. The columns and beams seemed
to shimmer, and the hues of the wood felt
innately soothing and warm. Next to the solid
grays and blacks of construction, the gentlyshifting
shades of the grain made everything a
little fresher and more inviting.
“It’s awesome,” said Jimmy Mitchell, lead project
manager for Skanska construction. Standing in
the atrium, Mitchell said he hoped the Kendeda
Building would give other firms ideas about
what they can accomplish with the mass timber
framing style. “Designers, structural engineers
and owners can look at this and say, ‘For my
next commercial application, I want to consider
wood structure.’”
Light, Strong and Resilient
As a category, mass timber describes engineered
products that have been made by laminating
or compressing multiple layers of wood into
single, solid panels. Glulam and NLT have many
advocates, though firms also seek out dowellaminated
timber (DLT). Other options include
cross-laminated timber (CLT), in which layers of
dimension lumber are secured together at right
angles, and structural composite lumber (SCL),
manufactured from blocks of dried and graded
veneers, strands or flakes.
16 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
The refining process is fairly simple, but mass
timber products are light, strong and resilient,
with a commanding load-bearing capacity and
a superior resistance to fire and heat. And while
these properties would be familiar to anyone
who’s seen a tall pine sway in the wind without
snapping - or watched a campfire log take hours
to burn - mass timber is a uniquely 21st-century
technique. The International Code Council (ICC)
recently settled on changes that will permit it
for the design of taller buildings, and only a few
structures in North America
have put it to use.
Whether it’s applied to a
single-family lodge or a giant
airport terminal, Mitchell
believes mass timber holds
unparalleled advantages
over steel or concrete.
Wood is a natural and
renewable carbon sink, and
harvesting it leaves a far
lower environmental impact
than mining. Compared
to conventional materials,
mass timber can be cheaper
to build with and easier to
install, which speeds up
construction times and
drives down labor costs.
When it’s applied to new
buildings in growing cities,
it opens up new revenue
streams from forests in more
rural communities. Given all
of these benefits, Mitchell
says he’s not surprised by
the new embrace of mass
timber by his peers.
Advocacy is Changing
Minds
Until recently, access to
mass timber was fairly
limited, especially in the Southeast, where only
one facility manufactures it. The Long Hall, in
Whitefish, Montana, is the first commercial
building project in the United States constructed
with CLT and was only completed in 2011. Even
in Europe, where builders have been using mass
timber since the 1990s - and where about fourfifths
of the world’s CLT is still made - it remains
a niche product: only 680,000 cubic meters were
produced in 2016, compared to 1.068 billion
cubic meters of wood products consumed.
Mass timber is growing, however, thanks to years
of advocacy among architects, construction
material specialists and authorities in fire and
safety. Bruce Lindsey, the South Atlanta regional
director for WoodWorks, says the nonprofit has
already devoted 40,000 hours of workshops
and seminars to the subject, educating industry
professionals about the material’s sustainability,
cost-effectiveness and resistance to harsh
weather. Before tall wood buildings could be
allowed into the 2021 International Building
Code, the ICC convened the Tall Wood Building
(TWB) Ad Hoc Committee in December 2015
and chartered it to conduct a long, detailed
technical review of mass timber knowledge and
building performance. The general public has
needed convincing, too: wood, after all, is an
excellent fuel source, with a role in some of the
most destructive urban fires of the early 20th
century. It had been banned from use in the
construction of theaters and schools in cities
around the country, but experts now say that
mass timber can be safer - and tougher - than
conventional materials.
“I’d rather be in a 10-story building out of wood
than a two-story building out of unprotected
steel,” said Pat Layton, director of the Wood
Utilization and Design Institute at Clemson
University. “Wood is combustible, but it’s
extremely fire-resistant, and it burns at a very
predictable rate.”
Layton pointed out that wood chars uniformly
at about one-and-a-quarter inches per hour. As
the exterior burns, the resulting carbon build-up
acts as a natural insulator, forming a seal that
blocks the underlying tissue from oxidizing. As a
result, timber can burn slowly and consistently,
retaining its integrity for hours, rather than falling
apart in sudden bursts. By contrast, moisture
trapped in concrete can pressurize and expand
at high temperatures, causing layers to violently
break off, and the strength in metals can quickly
dissipate at around 1,000 degrees Celsius. While
every material has inherent risks, Layton believes
the risks of timber are fairly straightforward to
manage - especially when used with effective
SPECIAL ATLANTA SHOW EDITION 2020 17
sprinkler systems, heat-resistant gypsum board
and sensible fire exits that are easy to reach.
“You have to take care of the envelope,” she said.
“Sewers leak. Roofs leak. Steel rusts. Over time,
you’ll even see cement flaking. Any building -
steel, concrete or wood - you have to take of it.
But if you take care of it, it’s going to be fine.”
When talking about wood’s performance in
hurricanes, earthquakes and other disasters,
Layton described TNT blast tests of mass
timber initiated by the U.S. Army in 2018.
These results were promising and led to the
use of CLT for four- or five-story structures
that house soldiers and their families, many of
them featuring staircases and elevator shafts.
She was also adamant about the role that mass
timber construction plays in stimulating the
local economies in the Southeast, a view shared
by leaders in the forestry profession, including
Georgia Forestry Association President and CEO
Andres Villegas.
“Products like CLT or glulam represent a new
use of lumber,” he said. “We have such a thriving
building and construction community in Atlanta,
Savannah, Macon, Athens and Valdosta, and
we’re projected to add five million people over
the next 20 years. As our state continues to add
population, some of us are going to be living in
buildings that are made from mass timber that’s
cut in Georgia and from trees that are grown in
Georgia.”
“A Sustainable Way to Build”
What this means for Georgia’s forest landowners
is signaled, in part, by the opening of a new mass
timber facility in Dothan, Alabama. Operated
by the Flordia-based International Beams, the
227,000-square-foot factory now employs over
50 people and is the first mass timber facility to
trade primarily in Southern yellow pine. Working
with vendors like Rex Lumber, Interfor and
18 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
WestRock, the site produces CLT for firms like
Gainsborough Architects and Cooper Carry.
“It just seems like a no-brainer to us,” Simon
Siegert, architectural designer for International
Beams, said about the local market for CLT. “It’s
a sustainable ways to build, and it’s a reasonable
way to build for future generations.”
Risher Willard, utilization chief for the Georgia
Forestry Commission, said that the market for
mass timber would help forest landowners derive
the maximum benefit from their property.
“The Southeast is one of the largest wood
baskets in the entire world,” he said. “In Georgia,
we’re growing 41 percent more wood per year
than we’re using, and we need more outlets for
wood products to utilize all of that excess supply.
Any time you create more demand for wood
products, it all comes back to the timber owner.”
In June, Willard gave a presentation on the forest
industry at the Georgia Environmental Health
Association’s annual education conference. He
emphasizes the need to keep the public informed
while restraining some of the hype about mass
timber as a commodity - at least in the short
term.
housing, to the agricultural issues affecting less
populous parts of the state.
“Timber is a product that brings the two
Georgias together,” says Bill de St. Aubin, CEO
of the Sizemore Group, a firm based in Atlanta.
“But before that can happen, the incentive is
going to need to be there. Architecture is a big
investment, and so you have to educate the
bank, the insurance company and everyone else
in the process. It’s not like computer technology.
It’s something that’s going to be around for a long
time.”
Potential for Lower Emissions
Like other design professionals, de St. Aubin was
particularly encouraged by the role that mass
timber could play in addressing climate change.
Living trees are prized for their ability to absorb
carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and
harvested timber can store carbon indefinitely. In
theory, harvesting wood from local, responsiblymanaged
forests can have much lower emissions
Booth #421
“CLT is going to be a slow-growth industry here
in the U.S.,” he predicted. “A lot of people are
going gaga over this, like it’s going to double the
price that landowners get for their wood, but
it’s not going to have any effect on the average
timber sale in Georgia for a long time. As more
plants get built and more is used for these
products, it’s only going to help in that regard.
But it’s not going to be overnight.”
Construction, like forestry, is almost always
a long-term endeavor, requiring a firm
understanding of how communities interact and
adapt to change. While the payout is measured
in decades - rather than in months or years -
many architects believe that, with enough time
and patience, the market for mass timber can
help to connect city-based issues, like affordable
than manufacturing steel or concrete.
At the Kendeda Building, Jimmy Mitchell said this
was one of the main reasons mass timber was
involved in the Georgia Tech project. There’s just
as much interests, however, among for-profit
companies. Hines Interests Limited Partnership,
a global real estate investment firm, sought
out glulam and DLT to construct the frame and
decking of T3 West Midtown, a 205,000-squarefoot
development in Atlanta. Because these
components were fabricated off-site, they could
be unloaded and installed with just a handful
of people, leading to enormous savings in time
and staffing resources. It also looks fantastic; the
glulam components are as smooth and elegant
as any material, with friendly earth tones that are
soothing to the eyes.
“I think our customers really appreciate the story
of wood,” John Heagy, a senior managing director
at Hines, said during a tour of the site. Even
for commercial projects, he said people were
drawn to the sustainability and aesthetics of
mass timber. And the company took pride in the
ecological impact: by using mass timber instead
of metal and concrete, the structure will store
3,600 metrics tons of carbon dioxide and avoid
14,000 metric tons of emissions. This can be easy
to overlook, since the building has a rustic wood
core but is covered on the outside with dark zinc
panels. Like the Kendeda Building, the modern
and rustic effects are in perfect harmony.
“The exterior was designed to look like steel, but
all of that is supported by wood,” Heagy said.
“This is a beautiful new building, with an old soul.
And from a technology standpoint, it’s top notch.”
Impact of Social Media & Brand Identity
WEDNESDAY :: 11:30AM - 12:30PM
Target Audience: All Building and Construction Professionals
Mastering Social Media is on the top of the agenda for almost all business executives. They are constantly working to identify ways in
which their firms can make profitable use of the popular Social Media platforms: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
Consumers traditionally use Social Media and the Internet to simply expend content: they read it, watch it, and use it to make informative
buying decisions. They are able to use these platforms for a variety of purposes because they have immediate access to this information
in the palm of their very hands.
This represents the social media phenomenon. This phenomenon is known to have significant impact a firm’s reputation, sales, and even
survival. Yet, many executives neglect this form of media because they do not understand what it is, the various purposes it serves or
how to engage with it. When used correctly, Social Media can monetize your sales and business growth. Platforms such as Instagram,
Facebook and Twitter enable the creation of virtual customer environments (VCEs), online communities of interest formed around
specific firms, brands, or products. In today’s market we see this as the instant gratification sale.
Increasing your engagement and strengthening your brand identity is vital to the success of this process. I am here to provide you with
the steps necessary to develop this type of presence. In this presentation I will coach you through the process of establishing your
business’ brand identity across a variety of social media platforms and show you the impact it will have on your sales strategy and overall
business goals.

Target Audience: Owners and Administrators of Contractors, Subcontractors
Atlanta workshops
Whether you negotiate your subcontracts or rely on your lawyer to do the heavy lifting at contract time, a savvy
Contractor or Specialty Subcontractor should understand the fundamental purpose of standard contract provisions, and
be prepared to negotiate for fair and commercially reasonable terms. While most professionals are skilled at negotiating the scope of
work, price, and time, there are a few simple but less than obvious tweaks to common subcontract terms and conditions that protect
from unfair results when a dispute arises.
U.S. Department of Labor Issues Alert to
HELP KEEP
CONSTRUCTION
WORKERS SAFE DURING
THE CORONAVIRUS
PANDEMIC
WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Department
of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) has issued an alert listing
safety tips employers can follow to help protect
construction workers from exposure to the
coronavirus.
Measures that can help protect employees
working in construction include:
• Encouraging workers to stay home if they are
sick;
• Training workers how to properly put on, use/
wear, and take off protective clothing and
equipment;
• Allowing workers to wear masks over their
nose and mouth to prevent them from
spreading the virus;
• Continuing to use other normal control
measures, including personal protective
equipment, necessary to protect workers
from other job hazards associated with
construction activities;
• Advising workers to avoid physical contact
with others and directing employees/
contractors/visitors to increase personal
space to at least six feet, where possible.
Where work trailers are used, all workers
should maintain social distancing while inside
the trailers;
• Promoting personal hygiene. If workers do
not have immediate access to soap and water
for handwashing, provide alcohol-based hand
rubs containing at least 60 percent alcohol;
• Using Environmental Protection Agencyapproved
cleaning chemicals from List N or
that have label claims against the coronavirus;
and
• Encouraging workers to report any safety and
health concerns.
The new alert is available for download in English
and Spanish.
Visit OSHA’s Publications webpage for other
useful workplace safety information.
The alert is the latest effort by OSHA to educate
and protect America’s workers and employers
during the coronavirus pandemic. OSHA has also
published Guidance on Preparing Workplaces for
COVID-19, a document aimed at helping workers
and employers learn about ways to protect
themselves and their workplaces during the
ongoing pandemic.
NAWIC Atlanta – Why
Aren’t You a Member?
If you want to succeed in the construction
business, start networking now through the
National Association of Women in Construction
(NAWIC). NAWIC exists to strengthen
and amplify the success of women in the
construction industry. Women occupy so many
functions and roles in construction: architects,
engineers, administrators, legal professionals,
accountants, risk-management staff, equipment
and material suppliers, general contractors,
specialty contractors, and tradespeople. NAWIC
connects these diverse groups locally, regionally,
nationally—even globally. Whatever your role is,
you can build an extended network by attending
professional events, participating in membership
spotlights on companies, and gathering with the
local community.
We all crave connections, whether that means
winding down with a group of friends and sharing
crazy stories from the week, chatting about wins
and opportunities with colleagues at a board
meeting, or meeting monthly with a group of
construction professionals. Collaboration and
communion are at the center of our human
nature. When like-minded people gather to
advance a shared purpose, friendships and
professional networks just happen. Connections
are made and references are easy in NAWIC.
Networking has evolved and so has the
construction industry. It used to be about who
38 CONSTRUCTIONMONTHLY.COM
®
you knew, but now it’s about who knows you.
Creating brand awareness, both individually and
corporately, allows your presence to be known
when you aren’t in the room. NAWIC offers
opportunities to build and cultivate your brand
through participating in programs like Block Kids.
Block Kids is a nationally recognized buildingblock
competition that introduces children to
the construction industry. It highlights a range of
opportunities in construction. This year, Atlanta
winner Chloe Brown advanced to second place
in the national competition with a project based
on American life. She built a bakery to show that
“Life is sweet.” In her bakery, people could dine
or work, and all proceeds were donated to the
Children’s Hospital of Atlanta. NAWIC is proud
to sponsor events like this that capture young
people’s creativity and help the next generation
thrive in the construction industry.
Introducing grade-school students to
construction is only the start of our mission
to bring talented people into our industry.
Partnering with the NAWIC Education
Foundation, NAWIC-Atlanta hosts annual
Design Drafting Competitions for local high
school and college students to solve design
problems. Winners from local competitions
advance, and Atlanta competitors have advanced
to the highest levels in regional and national
competitions. At the college level, NAWIC
offers mentorships that pair experienced
industry professionals with students enrolled in
construction programs.
Another treasured program is Rebecca’s tent,
a local shelter for homeless women. NAWIC-
Atlanta supports this amazing organization by
collecting donations, making improvements to
the shelter facility, and participating in programs
to benefit women in the shelter.
Join a committee and jump into action. The
Professional Development & Education
Committee leads the mentoring program and
brings engaging speakers and educational topics.
PD & E offers a virtual breakfast meeting with
topics like “Handling Different Personalities
Under Stress.” The PR & Marketing Committee
brings our message to life and connects us
through event promotion and coverage in
social media, website development, and email
campaigns. The Outreach Committee has
brought us Habitat Build and Rebecca’s Tent.
The Membership Committee identifies value and
promotes involvement. The Finance Committee
is integral to annual planning and budgeting.
Specialized and sub-committees offer shorterterm
opportunities with a big impact, like Block
Kids, Design Drafting Competition, and Women
in Construction Week.
Leadership roles such as committee chairs, the
board of directors, and officer positions provide
a platform for emerging and experienced leaders
to advance their skills and share their talents
to support members and to build and grow the
organization.
Anything worth building takes a village, and
that is why NAWIC welcomes members, nonmembers,
women, and men to join our mission.
