But there are garden tasks which can be completed at this time of year, here are a few ideas: • The kitchen garden – Complete preparation of your vegetable garden, digging in plenty of compost. Once this is completed, sow seeds of carrots, parsnip, beetroot, silverbeet, peas, swede and turnips directly into the soil. Lettuces, leeks, cabbage, tomato, capsicum, courgette, cucumber and eggplant seeds can be sown into punnets ready for transplanting later. • Transplant summer vege seedlings – Now is the time to get your lettuce, leeks, cabbage, onions and silverbeet under way. BOUNTY: It’s also time to get your tomato plants in the ground. Spray with copper oxychloride to protect young seedlings from fungus diseases. • Fruit trees – New citrus and fruit trees can be planted this month. Feed any existing citrus trees with citrus fertiliser to provide them with the extra nutrients that they will need over the growing season. HARDY: A new lawn can be sown during winter, let the rain do the watering. • Other tasks – Don’t forget your compost bin needs turning every couple of weeks. Paths, if not already sprayed for slippery moss and slime, should be done now. • Lawns – August is the best time of the year for that extra bit of lawn care, but think about a plan now for your new lawn. New lawns can be sown, or existing ones can be given a feed with lawn fertiliser. This should be watered in well, providing the rain doesn’t do it for you. • Houseplants – If its really too cold and nasty for you to brave the outdoors, take a moment to inspect your houseplants. Many of them may appreciate being repotted, or just fed with Phostrogen. Remember, if your plants are in rooms which are heated or where a dehumidifier is used, make sure that they aren’t drying out, as these conditions may make them take up more water than you would normally expect. Aimed at children aged one to three. Free, weekly sessions, term-time only. Children under eight years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Free. Drop in only, with limited spaces. No bookings taken. Darfield Library Take along your current craft project to work on while you get to know fellow craft enthusiasts at the Craft and Chat group at Lincoln Library. Monday, 10am-noon.
