20 Wednesday June 24 2020 Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz MY PRIDE AND JOY SELWYN TIMES Building a Bentley John describes building his replica 1929 WO Bentley from scratch, as a mammoth task and prefers not to think of the money spent on the project so far. It began five years ago, with it taking 18 months just to source all the parts needed before John could start building the Bentley. The car is now almost finished. The electrics have been completed and the car starts, though you have to sit on a 20 litre can to drive it. The Bentley’s chassis (which weighs a ton) and radiator were imported from Wales. Both are 1932 Rolls Royce parts. “When Bentley Motors went broke Rolls Royce took them over and put Rolls Royce parts on the Bentley’s 1920s chassis,” advises John. The Wall Street stock market crash in 1929 had left Bentley Motors unable to meet its mortgage payments. Receivers were appointed and the company was sold with the successful bidder being Rolls- Royce Limited. John imported parts for his Bentley from all around the world. “The front mudguards came from Sweden and cost half the price of what I’d have had to pay, if they’d been made in New Zealand. The tyres came from Los Angeles and the gearbox from the Luxury Junk Yard in South Carolina, in the United States,” explains John. Many more parts were sourced from around New Zealand. The bonnet and fuel tank were manufactured in Timaru, where the glass was also fitted into the windscreen supplied by John. A Mark 6 4.2 litre has been fitted into the car due to an original Bentley motor having an extremely high price tag, if one could be found. John built all the body frame from ash timber, which he says he acquired for a good price. This was covered with aluminium sheeting then 4mm thick foam rubber. Imitation leather in the British racing green colour was fitted to the exterior. John paid $750 for a bonnet then found it would not fit as it was too flimsy. He found it needed double aluminium. He had to knock a bulge in one part of the bonnet to fit in an air cleaner. “No one told me, when aluminium is too hot you can burn a hole in it,” laughs John. John is still working on the Bentley’s interior. He has made the front seat and these are now away being upholstered. “I like doing the woodwork so I make the frame for them to upholster,” says John. When the Bentley is finished, John and his wife Val, want to take it to rallies and special car events. This impressive vehicle is sure to attract considerable interest. The 1929 WO Bentley. This is especially important with older timber framed caravans, as a leak can cause considerable structural damage and jeopardise the integrity of the caravan.
