Library Services Director
A Note from the Director
While Library services are not yet back to normal, the staff of Burbank Public Library is working hard
to ensure we are still able to meet the community’s needs. In June, we launched curbside pickup
service and developed our online programming. Over the summer and into the fall, we will be
expanding offerings, including a resumption of in-person services as soon as we are able.
As an organization, we strive to be more than reactive. Even in times of pandemics and unrest, we
take the time to step back and look at the bigger picture to identify where the Library can best serve the community. As
part of this effort, this month we are launching a new strategic plan to guide our work from 2020-23. This plan is based
on input from the community and the staff, along with research and analysis. We had more than 1,100 responses to a
survey conducted last fall, and we reached out to make sure we also heard the voices of underrepresented groups.
The resulting plan calls for work in the next three years to be focused on five objectives:
1. Strengthen community by connecting users with resources to meet their needs
2. Support individuals and families by providing programs and services that support reading and learning
throughout the lifespan
3. Improve opportunity and equity by expanding services for workforce development, entrepreneurship
and technology access
4. Build resilience in the community and in the staff
5. Demonstrate value in space, operations and resources
Given what 2020 has brought us so far, we will have plenty of projects to accomplish our goals. While adapting to
changes required in our own operations, we also aim to support you as you seek work, navigate online schooling,
educate yourself about antiracism or look for ways to find connection and positivity in an uncertain world.
Please let us know how we are doing.
Burbank Public Library’s Reopening Plan
Reopening dates, times, and available services will be announced as they become
available and are subject to changes as required by Los Angeles County
The Library looks forward to expanding services and resuming onsite access as soon as allowed by LA County public
health protocols and circumstances surrounding the coronavirus pandemic.
Currently, the Library offers curbside pickup service, and this will continue to be the recommended method of obtaining
Library materials even when in-person use is allowed. Similarly, online programming, which has reached thousands of
users since the Library closed in March, will be the primary method of offering programming for the foreseeable future.
In the planned next phase, a limited number of users per day will be allowed onsite for activities such as public
computer use, research and browsing the collection. All plans are subject to changes required by Los Angeles County.
The most important goal in reopening is maintaining a safe environment for users and staff. To this end, along with
continued quarantine of returned items, online services and contactless pickup, the Library will limit the total number
of users in the building, require face coverings and enforce physical distancing. Users who do not adhere to posted
guidelines or staff instruction will be asked to leave. Regular cleaning will include disinfection of tables, chairs,
bathrooms, and any surfaces likely to be touched.
Full details of reopening protocols and timelines will be posted online
at burbanklibrary.org when available.
A new personalized service offered by the Library
Looking for a few good books? Let the professionals here at the Burbank
Library select a few just for you. Answer some easy questions, and based on
your suggestions we will fill a bag of books for you to pick up curbside. Just
think of us as your personal Library concierge.
How it works:
1. Fill out the form on our website
2. Within a week, a library staff member will pick out 1-6 books for you,
based on your preferences
3. You will receive an email or phone call when the books are on hold for
you and ready to be picked up
4. Reserve a curbside pickup time online or call the library to schedule
Happy Reading!
This service is currently limited to adult items and can be used once each month.
Access to materials for children will be available soon.
Book drops at all locations are now open for returns (including items with Do Not Place in Book Drop
stickers). ALL materials must be returned through the book drops so they can be properly quarantined.
Sorry, we CANNOT accept donations at this time.
Curbside Pickup
There are four simple steps to the process:
1. Reserve your items by placing a hold and wait for
notification that they are ready
2. Schedule an appointment online for pickup at
Central Library, at Buena Vista, at Northwest, or
call your library branch to arrange pickup
3. At the scheduled time, park in the designated
spot at your branch and call inside to notify staff
4. Pick up your items via contactless exchange
outside the building. You must wear a face
covering when picking up materials
Placing a Hold
You can request items (known as placing a hold) by
visiting the Library’s online catalog. Staff can also place
holds on your behalf via phone to your branch.
Our online catalog allows to access our collection 24/7.
Follow this tutorial to learn how to place an item on
hold any time of day. Happy reading!
Items on hold may be picked up at any of our 3 Libraries.
Summer Reading
with the Burbank Public Library!
This summer, our program encourages you to develop a habit of reading daily.
Track each day you’ve spent some time reading - as much or as little as you like, it all counts!
Summer Reading is open to ALL ages - babies, kids, teens, adults, and seniors.
Everyone is welcome to join in on the fun!
It’s not to late to sign up and qualify for prizes! The program ends August 1.
Here’s How It Works
All you need to do is try to read everyday - how long you spend reading or how much you read is entirely up to you.
Read a book or magazine, listen to an audiobook, read aloud to a child or as a family - all types of reading count!
Keep track of the days you read and earn prizes. There are two ways to track your reading this summer; online or on paper.
Track Your Reading Online
• Login through our website (burbanklibrary.org) and keep track of the days you read
• You can also include the title of what you read and a review if you would like, but it’s not required
• Every 15 days logged will qualify you for a prize - and an entry into the Grand Prize Drawing
• The online method will automatically add together the number of days you read and notify you
when you qualify for a prize. Prizes are available after August 1
Track your Reading on Paper
• If you prefer to track your days on paper, use the calendar on the next page, or get creative and design a log
of your own
• Mark off the days you read on the calendar - use checkmarks, add stickers, color in the boxes, or whatever
method you find easiest to keep track of your reading
• Every 15 days logged will qualify you for a prize and an entry into the Grand Prize Drawing
• Paper reading logs may be turned in at the Library for prizes after August 1. In order for a paper reading log
to count toward the Grand Prize Drawing on August 10, it must be turned in before closing on August 8, 2020
Reading Prizes
• You will automatically earn a prize for every 15 days of reading entered online or on paper
• Reading Prizes can be picked up at any Burbank Library between August 1 and August 31, 2020
• Reading Prizes might include mugs, book bags, books, stationery, and much more
Grand Prizes
• For every 15 days of reading you complete you will also earn one entry in the drawing for a Library Book Box
• You will be able to choose which Box you would like to win, and your entry will be placed in the drawing
for that Box
• A variety of Book Boxes with themes are being curated by Burbank Public Library’s own librarians
• They will include hand-picked books, book-related gift items, and other surprises!
Grand Prize Book Box Themes
• CHILDREN: Early Childhood, Beginning Readers, Graphic Novels, Fantasy/Fiction, Realistic & Nonfiction
• TEEN: Graphic Novels/Manga, Dystopian, Realistic Fiction/Contemporary, Romance, Mystery
• ADULT: Mystery/Thriller, Romance, Sci Fi/Fantasy, Literary Fiction, Nonfiction
