A New “Normal”

Last month we were happy to see our restaurants and

shops begin to open and welcome us back to the Ave.

And although Summer is in full swing, being able to dine

outdoors has been a treat.

On page 48 you will find the Delray Beach Chamber of

Commerce article #KeepLocalsAfloat. There are lots of

great ways to stay in town and support local businesses,

other than restaurants and shops.

Our City Person John Brewer began a group called Eat Local Delray,

that turned into the Socially Distant Supper Club, that went VIRAL! There

are chapters all over Florida, and beyond! Read about how one idea with

a friend turned into a movement that saved many of our local restaurants!

Remember to keep a face mask handy! On June 23 Palm Beach Commissioners

voted unanimously to mandate masks throughout the county.

This means masks must be worn inside businesses or any building where

the public has a right to access.

Let’s keep in mind that hurricane season is here, and we need to gather

supplies – preparation is key! Never before have bathroom and cleaning

supplies been so very important to keep in stock at home, as well as water,

candles, flashlights, and batteries.

And as always, a very heartfelt *Thank You* to our loyal advertisers,

readers; and essential workers for keeping us safe, healthy, and fed!

Have a wonderful July 4th!

Raise your

not (your)

voice. It is

flowers,

not

thunder.

Delray Beach

Mother of Six

Saved from

Homelessness

During Pandemic

Shantavia yOung and her children

As the COVID-19 crisis led to unprecedented

unemployment, many of the

already vulnerable families served by

Achievement Center for Children & Families

(ACCF) in Delray Beach have experienced

critical needs during these difficult times.

These families have been facing the unknown

of how to sustain their basic needs

and manage loss of employment along with

supporting their children’s virtual learning

while schools remain closed.

ACCF’s Family Strengthening Team,

led by Berthanie Pierre, pivoted with the

immediate crisis to provide aid including

emergency funding for basic needs,

meals through ACCF’s food distribution

program, help with managing schoolwork,

and assisting families in navigating

unemployment claims and securing food

stamps. During this process, the Family

Strengthening team discovered that three

of their member families were experiencing

homelessness.

ACCF utilized community resources and

within two weeks the program’s Achievement

and Financial Navigators were able

to help secure and fund a deposit for affordable

housing for two of the families.

The funding was available through private

donations raised through ACCF’s COVID-19

Emergency Relief Funds. A third family has

received temporary shelter while the ACCF

team members work with partners in the

community to secure affordable housing.

Shantavia Young, a Delray Beach mother

with six young children including an infant

and two toddlers, was living “place to

place” without a stable home for her family.

She visited the ACCF to ask for assistance,

and they found and secured an affordable

rental home for her family, as well as provided

her with diapers and food each Friday,

as part of the organization’s weekly

food distribution.

“I am very thankful for the help that they

have given our family and for the help that

they will continue to provide,” said Ms.

Young. “Since we are in our new home, our

family is doing well.”

locals only | delray under $50

By Darien Davies

Delray Under $50

Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels

Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple

Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more

to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings

spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can

seem expensive at times, there’s a great

opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer

without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can

do in Delray Beach in July for $50 or less.

Much like the beach, sunglasses and an easy-ridin’ bicycle,

ice cream is king during the summer. It’s an easy and delicious

way to not only cool down after a long day outside,

but also a sweet treat while you’re strolling the Avenue during

daytime shopping or post-dinner

walking. July is National Ice

Cream Month and is a great

reminder that ice cream

heals all. If you’re looking

for the best ice

cream in town, look

no further than

Proper Ice Cream.

Owner and ice

cream extraordinaire,

Rickey Felberbaum,

has traveled

the world and

worked with some of

the finest chefs to not

only learn the science behind

ice cream, but also to

perfect and elevate the flavor

combinations. So, as

you can imagine, it’s not

your average ice cream,

but as Felberbaum says,

“it’s simply proper, the

way it should be.” While

their flavors rotate regularly,

you might expect to

find black sesame, butterscotch

brownie, pistachio

with caramelized figs,

glazed donut, honeycomb,

and more. You can indulge

in sorbets, too, or non-dairy, plant-based ice cream flavors like pistachio

and golden milk. Proper Ice Cream’s current reduced hours

are Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 10pm, Friday and Saturday

from Noon to 11pm and Sunday from Noon to 10pm to get your

creamy fix. Proper Ice Cream is located at 75 S.E. Fourth Ave. Visit

www.propericecream.com or call (561) 455-4463 for more information

and current flavor details.

Give me mo, mo, mo avocado. This healthy fruit is jam packed

with Vitamins C, E, K, and B-6, riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic

acid, magnesium, and potassium, and provides lutein,

beta-carotene, and omega-3 fatty acids. Not to mention, it’s crazy

delicious. July 31 is National Avocado Day and it’s your green light

to go ahead and indulge in all things avocado. First option brings

you to Caffe Luna Rosa for their Fresh Burrata and Avocado Toast,

which is toasted Challah bread topped with fresh burrata spread,

sliced avocado and red onions, served over a bed of arugula with a

side of heirloom tomatoes tossed in red wine vin and drizzled in a

balsamic reduction and pesto sauce for $19. Or, head to Farmhouse

Kitchen for their not-your-average Avocado Caesar. It’s made with

a sesame-dusted avocado, roasted garlic dressing, truffle pecorino,

jubilee tomato and shaved almonds for $16. Another delicious option

is El Camino’s Avocado Salad, made with avocado, onion, tomato,

queso fresco and a cilantro vinaigrette for $9. Whatever your

choice, you cannot go wrong when you include the green machine.

Sometimes only a deli sandwich will do. Toasty bread, crisp lettuce,

tasty meat and cool condiments all add up to the perfect

solution to satiate any hunger. Good thing for you, July is National

Deli Sandwich Month, and double good thing for all of us, the

Avenue is home to one of the often imitated but never duplicated

sandwich shops around. Sandwiches by the Sea has been dishing

out sandwiches, wraps, salads, and smoothies since 1981. If you

know, you know. If you don’t, now you do. Sure, you can opt for their

turkey, ham and cheese, or roast beef sandwiches, served on

either rye, sliced multi-grain, or 6”/10” white or wheat sub

that start at $8.25, but you could also sink your teeth into

their speciality hoagies. Try the Tidal Wave, which is roast

beef, turkey, muenster cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Russian

dressing for $10.75, or the Hot Sicilian, with Genoa salami,

pepperoni, peppers, melted provolone, and Italian dressing

for $9.95. Regardless of your selection, it will be ready before

you can blink. Sandwiches by the Sea is located at 1214

E. Atlantic Ave. Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call

(561) 272-2212 for more information.

After being stuck inside

for so many months,

it’s time to get back

outside and experience

some fresh air - socially

distanced, of course.

July is National Picnic

Month and is a great

time to channel your inner

Yogi Bear, dust off the

picnic basket and flannel

blanket, head to your closest

shady spot and pop open a good time. To

make it super easy on yourself, plan for your only

pre-picnic stop to be Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market where you

can score on all of your picnic essentials. Not only do they offer

freshly prepared goodies like soups, salads, sandwiches

and sides, but you can also get fresh bread, cheese, salami and

olives, as well as wine, chips, fresh fruit and more. The picnic

possibilities are endless so pack your favorite beverage and

head on out to your favorite park, beach or Intracoastal hideaway

to indulge. There isn’t much more you’ll need other than

some great music and fun friends, or maybe just a good book

for your party-of-one picnic. Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market is

located at 381 N.E. Third Ave. Visit www.bedners.com or call

(561) 501-5177 for more information and store hours.

Eating watermelon might be one of the only times where

it’s okay to have fruit juice dripping down your face

without worry. July is National Watermelon Month and

gives you an open invitation to scour the markets and restaurants

in search of this cooling and refreshing summer treat. To

kick off your watermelon fest, head to The Atlantic Grille and

enjoy their Arugula & Watermelon Salad. Made with feta, red

onion, mint, and sherry vinaigrette for $13, it’s a great salad

that’ll fill you up without weighing you down. If you prefer to

drink your waju, saunter on over to El Camino and cool down

with their Watermelon-Jalapeno Margarita. Made with Blanco

Tequila, watermelon juice, jalapeño and smoked sea salt, it’ll

give you a refreshing sweat for $12. Pop back a couple before

heading over to Brule Bistro where you can fancy a different

kind of watermelon. Their Pork Belly Banh Mi is made with

watermelon radish, pickled cabbage, cucumber, micro cilantro,

liver pate, chili aioli and a house baguette for $15, and is

a delightful twist on your average sandwich. With all these

tasty options, watermelon never looked so good, don’t you

agree? Visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561)

243-1077 for more information.

See

entertainment | gotta SEE By lisa marie

Everyone will have their list of favorite movies and each

person’s catalog will be different….I wish I could have

included more because I have lots of movies that I love

for various different reasons…But these are for starters!

► Goodfellas (1990) A Martin Scorsese film about a young man

who grows up in the mob and works very hard to advance himself

through the ranks. He enjoys his life of money and luxury but is

oblivious to the horror that he causes. A drug addiction and a few

mistakes ultimately unravel his climb to the top. Based on the book

“Wiseguy” by Nicholas Pileggi. Starring Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta,

Joe Pesci and more.

► Dirty Dancing (1987) Baby

(Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer

away from the Peace Corps. Hoping

to enjoy her youth while it lasts, she’s

disappointed when her summer

plans deposit her at a sleepy resort

in the Catskills with her parents. Her

luck turns around, however, when

the resort’s dance instructor, Johnny

(Patrick Swayze), enlists Baby as

his new partner, and the two fall in

love. Baby’s father forbids her from

seeing Johnny, but she’s determined

to help him perform the last big

dance of the summer.

► Monsters Inc. (2001)

Monsters Incorporated is the

largest scare factory in the monster

world, and James P. Sullivan (John

Goodman) is one of its top scarers.

Sullivan is a huge, intimidating

monster with blue fur, large

purple spots and horns. His

scare assistant, best friend and

roommate is Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), a green, opinionated,

feisty little one-eyed monster. Visiting from the human world is

Boo (Mary Gibbs), a tiny girl who goes where no human has ever

gone before.

► Shawshank Redemption (1994) Andy Dufresne (Tim

Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for

the murders of his wife and her lover and is sentenced to a tough

prison. However, only Andy knows he didn’t commit the crimes.

While there, he forms a friendship with Red (Morgan Freeman),

experiences the brutality of prison life, adapts, helps the warden,

etc., all in 19 years.

Karen (Emma Thompson) married to Harry (Alan Rickman),

Lonely Sarah (Laura Linney), aging rocker Billy Mack (Bill Nighy),

erotic extra John (Martin Freeman) and ‘Just Judy’ (Joanna Page),

New Prime Minister David (Hugh Grant), Jamie (Colin Firth), Colin

Frissell (Kris Marshall). Written and directed by ‘Four Weddings

and a Funeral’ writer Richard Curtis.

► The Martian (2015) When astronauts blast off from the planet

Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed

dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies,

the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to

survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members

of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to

bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a

daring rescue mission.

► Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) A Steven Spielberg

masterpiece. An epic scientific adventure about a group of people

who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard

Dreyfuss) witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a

“sunburn” from its bright lights to prove it. Roy refuses to accept an

explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his life to

pursue the truth about UFOs.

► Forrest Gump (1994) Slow-witted Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks)

has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his

supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted

life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star,

fighting in Vietnam or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires

people with his childlike optimism. But one person Forrest cares

about most may be the most difficult to save -- his childhood love,

the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright).

► Love Actually (2003) All of London is in love, or longing to be,

in this ultimate romantic comedy. Love Actually involves more than

a dozen main characters, each weaving his or her way into another’s

heart over the course of one particularly eventful Christmas. The

cast is impressive; Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter (Chiwetel

Ejiofor) bring many of the principals together. Best man Mark

Focusing on the latest

007 actor, Daniel Craig

and the five movies he

has starred in: Casino

Royale (2006) Bond

heads to Madagascar,

where he uncovers a

link to Le Chiffre (Mads

Mikkelsen), a man who

finances terrorist

organizations. Learning that Le Chiffre plans to raise money in

a high-stakes poker game, MI6 sends Bond to play against him,

gambling that their newest “00” operative will topple the man’s

organization. Quantum of Solace (2008) Following the death of

Vesper Lynd, James Bond makes his next mission personal. The

hunt for those who blackmailed his lover leads him to ruthless

businessman Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a key player in

the organization which coerced Vesper. Bond learns that Greene

is plotting to gain total control of a vital natural resource, and he

must navigate a minefield of danger and treachery to foil the plan.

Skyfall (2012) When Bond’s latest assignment goes terribly wrong,

it leads to a calamitous turn of events: Undercover agents around

the world are exposed, and MI6 is attacked, forcing M (Judi Dench)

to relocate the agency. With MI6 now compromised inside and out,

M turns to the one man she can trust: Bond. Aided only by a field

agent (Naomie Harris), Bond takes to the shadows and follows a

trail to Silva (Javier Bardem), a man from M’s past who wants to

settle an old score. Spectre (2015) A cryptic message from the past

leads James Bond to Mexico City and Rome, where he meets the

beautiful widow (Monica Bellucci) of an infamous criminal. After

infiltrating a secret meeting, 007 uncovers the existence of the

sinister organization SPECTRE. Needing the help of the daughter

of an old nemesis, he embarks on a mission to find her. As Bond

ventures toward the heart of SPECTRE, he discovers a chilling

connection between himself and the enemy (Christoph Waltz) he

seeks. No Time To Die (2020) Bond has left active service and is

enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when

his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help.

The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far

more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a

mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

By dr. john conde

Tennis Injuries:

Cutting Edge Treatments and Prevention Strategies

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is by far one of the

most prevalent injuries in tennis. It is caused by the microtearing

of the extensor group muscles of the elbow. These

muscles are located on the thumb side of the elbow and allow us

to bring our wrist back and side to side. Scar tissue can form in

the muscle belly which can compress important nerves and blood

vessels. It typically occurs secondarily to the use of an aluminum

racquet, incorrect grip measurement, improper backhand technique,

excess weight of the racquet, and too much tension in the strings.

Rotator cuff tendonitis is also caused by micro-tearing in the

belly of the muscle. The muscles involved are the rotator cuff muscles

of the shoulder which originate in the shoulder blade (scapula)

and attach to the upper arm (humerus). Typically we see this occur

with players who serve with an elbow to side angle of less than 90

degrees. Due to the improper mechanics of the serve it typically

also requires the player to serve repeatedly.

A byproduct of the constant running and cutting in tennis is anterior

(front) knee pain located deep, beneath the knee cap (patella).

The patella fails to track or move correctly within the knee

resulting in frictional forces applied to the lower femur bone and

subsequent braking off of small pieces of cartilage. This can lead to

a condition called chondromalacia patella. Pain is usually experienced

when going up stairs and stopping abruptly while running.

The primary goals in treating these disorders are to reduce inflammation,

break up the fibrotic adhesions (scar tissue), strengthen

surrounding musculature and neurological pathways, and restore

proper joint motion. This entails some simple procedures

including myofascial release, passive and active mobilization,

isometric and isotonic strengthening, and joint manipulation (adjustment).

New cutting edge procedures involve the use of high

power class IV lasers which accelerate tissue healing by nearly

tenfold and the use of mirrors in a technique termed mirror imaging

technique which attempts to strengthen the neurological and

immune pathways in the affected limb. In addition, cross cord applications

and eccentric fast stretching are novel procedures which

decrease the healing time.

In terms of nutrition, supplementing with proteolytic enzymes

and essential fatty acids will help to reduce inflammation and

break down scar tissue. Sticking to an anti-inflammatory, low glycemic

index diet will also help to reduce inflammation and insulin

surges which can promote neurological degeneration

Lastly, prevention is the key to avoiding injury all together. Here

are some key tips to increase your longevity and effectiveness on

the court:

1. Utilize a ceramic or graphite racquet with reduced vibration.

2. Choose a lighter racquet -10.5 - 11.5 oz.

3. Make sure you have a correct grip measurement.

4. Use natural gut strings, which have tension 3-5lbs below what

an athlete is used to.

5. Use proper backhand technique.

6. Warm up prior to playing.

7. Focus on core muscle training.

8. Keep your spine in correct alignment.

9. Strengthen lower extremity musculature.

10. Take multivitamin with plenty of anti-oxidants.

A real cutting edge procedure is termed motor imaging technique.

In essence the athlete visualizes in sets and repetition format,

a learned movement such as the various movements on the

tennis court. The visualization must be very detailed in nature.

Scientifically, the neurological pathways involved in the particular

movement are enhanced and other non-pertinent pathways

inhibited. This activity is gaining great notoriety as many of the

top athletes in the world are incorporating this into their treatment

regimen.

Mind Makeover

If you are serious about transforming your

body and getting in the best possible shape

there’s a couple of things you will need to

do before you start your transformation.

You might think I’m going to say…plan your workouts, clean

out your pantry etc…but, not so fast! Before you can start

to transform your body you have to transform your mind.

Transforming your body is pretty much ALL mental. If your mind is

not in the right place your body will not follow suit. I’ve seen it time

and time again in the fitness industry. Your mindset is the ONLY

thing that separates you from having the body of your dreams. It’s

the difference of reaching goals or missing them. With that being

said, here are some things to consider before beginning your

“physical” transformation.

Start by identifying your current mindset. You

may feel frustrated or discouraged about your

current situation. You may feel you have tried

everything to change your body with no success.

You may feel defeated that you gain

and lose the same 10 pounds over and

over. Whatever your situation may be,

you need to realize what feelings you’re

having and why you’re having them.

Once you identify your current

mindset you’ll be able to move forward

with the right type of thinking.

Which brings me to my next

point, the power of positivity.

A positive mindset is a MUST.

We attract what we think about.

We become what we think

about. Positive thoughts yield

positive results. If you start your transformation

with doubts about your abilities or doubts about

hitting your goals you are already setting up for

failure. Know there will be obstacles along the

way, but you need to have the right mindset so

obstacles will not hinder you final result. Whatever

life throws you (life is full of curveballs)

you’ll be ready to handle any situation or bump

in the road. Too many people give up on their

goals because of circumstances totally within

their control. So be ready, willing and able to say

and do, “Whatever comes my way, I’ve got this

and I WILL do this!”

The next key to a successful transformation is that you have to

want it bad enough. If not, then EVERY excuse in the book will

stand in your way. “Oh, I didn’t have time to get to the gym. It was

just a couple extra slices of pizza.” Every person that wants it bad

enough, gets results. The clients that think they want to transform

but don’t have a yearning in their heart for change, don’t. It’s really

as simple as that. New clients will ask, “Do you think I have

what it takes to transform?” And the answer is always, “Yes, anyone

can transform as long as you want it bad enough!” When you want

something bad enough, your heart and head are into it and

with that your body will follow.

The last piece of advice is to leave fear of failure at the

door. There is nothing to be afraid of - the only way to

fail is by not even trying. Fear is often what holds us

back from going after the things we really want in

life. What should really scare you is the thought

of staying stagnant in your current situation.

Imagine living in a body you’re uncomfortable

with for the rest of your life…now

that’s scary! The only way you can

fail is by giving up. Understand

that transforming your body is

marathon not a sprint. Every

“body” is different and each person’s

transformation will take a

different amount of time. For some it

will be three months for some it will be one year.

Whatever it is for YOU, don’t ever give up. Failure will

never be an option.

Before embarking on your physical transformation,

make sure your mind is warmed up and

ready to run with you. Our mind is the most

powerful tool we have and it can either make

A Fantasy Trip

Around Ring Road

The entire country is about the size of Maine, but with volcanoes,

icebergs, mountains, black sand beaches, and majestic

fjords, there is much to see and savor. The sea in all its colors

and turbulence is always steps away.

To see Iceland at its best, take the Ring Road. This is a circumference

road that circles the entire country. By renting a car, or for

those who wish more adventure by renting a camper, you can take

the Ring Road around the island and catch the true flavor, cuisine,

cities, farms, and people in all their splendor.

I recommend you take the Ring Road counterclockwise for

two reasons. One, you will be traveling the most beautiful parts

of the country first giving you the option to stay in a place longer.

You may not have the time if you wait until the end of your trip.

Two, you run counter to most of the tourist and will encounter

less congestion.

Renting a 4X4 will give you access to the entire country, especially

if you want to make a side trip off the Ring Road. If you camp,

there are campgrounds in every town and city at a nominal cost.

The towering view of mountain peaks from high above Porsmork .

Whatever you’ve heard, whatever you’ve read, whatever pictures or

videos you’ve seen, they cannot capture the raw, stunning beauty of

Iceland. The best time to visit is the summer and the breathtaking

countryside is just outside of Reykjavik, the capital city.

though, with permission, some farmers will allow ‘overnighting’

for a fee - but it is essential, and etiquette demands, you get permission

first. If you don’t camp, there are lovely hotels and inns at

every juncture on the Ring Road.

When hiking in Iceland you can cross glacier fields, even in

summer, with Shangri- La vistas of enchanted valleys and spectacular

mountain ranges, unworldly to Florida eyes. Rugged

mountain trails can often lead to isolated crystal-cold pristine

waterfalls, over ice caps, or through green lush, mountain meadows

with views that stun. Nowhere on earth will you see volcanoes

and the wild sea, thermal pools, and an almost bare lunar

landscape just miles apart.

On the south coast approximately 6 miles west of the town of

Vik is Dyrholaey (deer-lay) on Ring Road. From the high plateau

above the ocean you will find towering black basalt obelisks that

have withstood the petulant sea.

The cliffs at Dyrholaey are home to the colorful Atlantic Puffin

- with luck you will see one waddle across the sea-sky and come

to rest close by on the cliffs. The colorful top-heavy Puffin is too

heavy to fly, but doesn’t know it. They feed on the rich sea life, doing

their unique flying waddle as their gull cousins slash over the

waves or sail high above the rugged cliffs.

In Vik, just a short walk from the downtown shops and gas stations

is the long and broad black, volcanic sand beach. Caution

needs to be exercised here. The waves are unpredictable and have

fatally latched on to a victim or two. There are wonderful short

day and half-day hikes in the heights above Vik and its beach.

The national park system in Iceland is breathtaking and something

Icelanders are truly proud of. One of the largest National

Parks in Europe is Vatnajokull National Park which was formed

from two earlier parks to preserve an icecap. The hiking here is

spectacular.

Heading further around the Ring Road on the north coast is the

city of Akureyri where whale watching tours can be arranged.

While traveling the Ring Road, every few miles there is another

scenic wonder. There are many scenic jewels and towns to visit as

one makes the circuit around Iceland.

Completing the Ring Road circle, you enter the capital, Reykjavik. The

city is sophisticated and charming, easy to navigate with

great restaurants and fine shopping. It has all the amenities of any

capital in Europe without the congestion or pollution. It is a gem

on this island nation.

SAFETY TIPS FOR TRAVELING IN ICELAND

Iceland is not sunny south Florida and there are essential words

of caution for the traveler. Do not be lulled into complacency. The

weather and other conditions in Iceland can be treacherous, but if

you exercise caution your trip will be a once in a lifetime experience

to a land of raw, untouched beauty.

The wind of Iceland is dangerous an unpredictable. Weather

conditions, even during the best of the summer months, can

change with no warning and became treacherous. The velocity of

the wind on a cliffside fjord can carry one off a cliff, and hypothermia

at upper elevations can take a hiker’s life.

Tourists from warmer climates need to be aware and take necessary

precautions. Before setting out on a hike or trip always

check the weather and road conditions. There is a nationwide

emergency number in English (112) available 24 hours a day.

There is also a weather phone number and website in English

with on-going weather reports and alerts. When hiking, stay on

designated paths - warning signs are sparse in the country and a

fall while off trail can lead to an injury, or worse. It is easy to get

lost and a night stranded in the mountains can be fatal. Always,

hike with a partner, never alone.

Vegetation grows slowly in Iceland and the environment in this

sub-artic country is fragile. It takes many years to build up substantial

growth and Icelanders are careful of it.

There are many thermal pools in Iceland. Some are dangerous,

often not marked as hazardous. The wrong thermal pool can severely

burn.

Respect the Icelandic ocean, it can pull you from the shore with

a surprise killer wave that can sweep you into the unforgiving,

freezing sea.

When traveling in the outback, register your itinerary with

SafeTravel.Is. If you become lost, rescue can be arranged. It is

smart to let this service know where you are going.

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and road washouts are Icelandic

facts of life. Check road and safety conditions in the area you

are traveling. Travel advisories are always on TV - also, check the

website or call the weather number.

If you follow these simple rules your summer travel to Iceland

will bring you memories of a beautiful nation with open, warm

friendly people, who live surrounded by the power and forces of

nature. A declaration of their indomitable, Icelandic Viking spirit.

Important News from

PurLife Fitness Centers

Unprecedented times. Unchartered waters. Unique circumstances.

Whichever way you say it, our world has been rocked the last several

months. We at Purlife Fitness Centers want to welcome you back into our

club. The new standards that we have put in place to ensure your health

and safety is extensive, and we have gone to great lengths to give you a

place to not only return to, but to aid in your overall health in the process.

In addition to abiding to CDC guidelines which include keeping

capacity at 50%, maintaining social distancing by powering off

every other piece of cardio equipment and distancing equipment,

and discontinuing towel service, extra measures have been

taken that include:

- Every staff member’s temperature will be taken before the start

of their shift and all staff wears the appropriate PPE while interacting

with members. In addition, the entire team participates in

our increased cleaning and sanitation schedule, ensuring the entire

facility is disinfected multiple times per day.

- Temperature checks for every member who is looking to enter

the gym, and any member with a temperature above 100.4 will not

be allowed to enter the facility.

- Hospital grade disinfectant and sanitation supplies are being

used throughout the facility.

Additionally, we have repainted all touchable painted surfaces

with new Sherwin-Williams Paint Shield Microbicidal Paint technology.

This technology kills virus and pathogens for up to 4 years

once applied to a surface. Lastly, we have purchased OmniAir Hepa

1000V medical grade air scrubbers that have been placed throughout

the facilities. These units use UV and Peroxide to clean 100% of

the air several times per hour.

We now know, those at the highest risk populations for getting

COVID-19 are individuals older than 65 years and/or with pre-existing

conditions. Although we cannot turn back the clock, there

are two ways Purlife can step in – and that is consistent exercise

and adequate nutritional choices. Guess what the best way is to

prevent falling into a high-risk category? Making healthy lifestyle

choices so you do not get a condition to begin with! Even so, exercise

has been shown and proven beneficial for older adults and

people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis,

or heart disease. Regular exercise is essential for everyone under

normal circumstances. However, here are a few more reasons why

exercise is especially crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic:

• Boosts immune system: research shows that regular, moderate-intensity

exercise has immune-boosting benefits that can help

your body fight off infections, including COVID-19.

• Weight maintenance: Offset the effects of sedentary activities

and burn off those extra calories you may have been consuming

during the lockdown.

• Reduces stress and anxiety: a proven mood-booster and can

help adults reduce stress levels and build emotional resilience.

• Improves sleep: There is evidence that suggests regular exercise

helps you fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality — and getting a

good night’s sleep has also been found to boost your immune system.

Regular exercise improves balance, flexibility, strength, mobility,

and cardiovascular health. Plus, it can boost energy and overall

well-being. Not sure what to do or how to do it? Ask for one of

our highly qualified staff and personal trainers who will guide you

with proper form, creating exercise regiments specific to the individual’s

needs and past history.

We at Purlife are dedicated and committed to not only your fitness,

but to your health and safety. We understand that there are

those of you who may be hesitant to venture back out into the “new

normal.” Whether you are revving to go, on the fence, or hesitant,

we can whole-heartedly say that we have taken every possible precaution

and made every effort to make everyone comfortable and

safe. We did not focus on “What If,” we focused on what we CAN do!

DR. JOHN R. PASQUAL

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

By diane feen | photos by melissa korman

In a changing world some things need to stay static. And that is a

good thing. It is also a good thing that Dr. John Pasqual is calmly

doing what he always does best - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Board-Certified surgeon does everything from facial surgery

to dental implants, extractions, and advanced facial reconstruction.

His operating room has a 42-inch monitor that allows him to see

a digital view of patients’ facial structure and teeth. “With technology

so advanced today, dentistry has evolved immensely. We use

a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool called an i-Cat Cone Beam Imaging

machine. The i-Cat 3D Imaging machine is a great diagnostic

tool for pathology, trauma, facial fractures, tumors and cysts. With

the i-Cat, surgery is more accurate, and I am able to guide implant

placement.”

Dr. Pasqual does not have to tout his accomplishments, his resume

speaks for him. He went to the University of Pittsburgh School

of Dental Medicine, graduated President of his class, he completed

a four-year surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University

MetroHealth Medical Center, a level I trauma center, and spent

two years there as an Anesthesia Fellow. He is a Diplomate of the

American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Diplomate of the

International Congress of Oral Implantologists, and Diplomate of

the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a Fellow of the

American Association as well as International Association of Oral

and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Dr. Pasqual did externships in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery at

the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Montefiore University

Hospital and at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in

San Antonio. He recently became the President Elect for the Atlantic

Coast District Dental Association and is past President of the

South Palm Beach County Dental Association.

Because of his expertise and experience Dr. Pasqual is a Clinical

Associate Professor at University of Florida School of Dental Medicine

and in the Department of Oral Implantology at Temple University.

He also is a prior committee member for Dental Education and

Licensing for the State of Florida.

“We continue to grow exponentially every year and expand to

serve everyone in Palm Beach County and beyond,” said Dr. Pasqual,

whose staff is trained in intravenous sedation. They also have private

rooms and a relaxing setting for patients.

“Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is different from many dental

or medical clinics; we are a very patient-centric office. We focus

on the patients’ physical as well as emotional wellbeing,” he added.

Dr. Pasqual and his staff understand that surgery can be a very

stressful time for patients. “Our goal is to meet with patients for a

consultation, discuss their condition, explain their options and ultimately

perform our very best for them.”

At the Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center the Operating

Room rivals those in a hospital. On the wall of this pristine operating

room is a 42-inch monitor that allows Dr. Pasqual a clear digital

view of patients’ facial structure and teeth. “With technology so advanced

today, dentistry has evolved immensely.

There is one other thing to understand about Dr. Pasqual. “I am a

surgeon. Not all doctors that perform surgery are surgeons. It’s important

to look at a doctors’ credentials and board certifications.”

We agree.

The Pasqual Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Center is one of the few

centers that utilize such advanced technology to benefit patient

care from Er: YAG and Nd: Lasers, to Radiolase radiofrequency scalpel

to platelet rich fibrin (PRF) for wound healing. “I feel good if I

can make a difference in someone’s life. When you know you have

helped someone, and they are better when they leave your office -

it’s a good thing.”

46 | July 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

His excellent care is no secret to those in the industry. Dr.

Pasqual was inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an

international honor society for excellence in the specialty of

patient care. He is a past Delegate and current Board of Trustee

to the FDA..

Though some like to think of Dr. Pasqual as a Delray treasure,

others recognize his genius. Patients come from Boca Raton,

Palm Beach, Jupiter, Miami and across the country. Dr. Pasqual

has also treated celebrities, renowned musicians, champion

MMA fighters and other high-profile patients.

“I treat several patients that have celebrity-status. However, all

my patients are super-stars to me. It is a true privilege to practice

each and every day. I am humbled that patients that may obtain

medical care anywhere in the world choose my office.”

Patients testify to his dedication and expertise. “Dr. Pasqual’s

technical skills are remarkable. His office and staff are second

to none. But it is his gentle strength and ability to calm and

care for the patient that is most appreciated. No question goes

unanswered and no request seems unreasonable.”

Other agree. “Dr. Pasqual is the best. His staff and follow-up

is impeccable. He called to check on us at the end of the day to

make sure everything was OK. I highly recommend him.”

Nancy is also a fan. “My experience was excellent and my

implant surgery went flawlessly. Dr. Pasqual gave me a reason

to smile again!”

Dr. Pasqual is also involved in charities and organizations

that benefit those in need. He is Chairman of the Board of the

Bethesda Hospital Foundation (for the second time) and volunteers

at the Caridad Center. He and wife Nicole support the

ASPCA, Boys and Girls Club, Make a Wish Foundation, and Delray

Beach Public Library.

There is one thing that is non-negotiable at Pasqual Oral

& Maxillofacial Surgery Center – and that is respect for their

patients. “When patients present to our office it is about being

kind and compassionate. Patients say they are happy they

came to me and recovery was easy. When I hear statements

like this it is truly the greatest reward.”

Summer has always been for the locals. It’s when we take back

Delray Beach, walk right in to our favorite restaurant, get a

seat during happy hour and just enjoy the Ave at our leisure,

without the bustling and traffic that ensues during “season.” This

year is a bit different. Our restaurants, shops and hotels did not

benefit from a full season and have missed out on revenue they will

never see. Now more than ever, they need you to support them and

help #KeepLocalsAfloat.

A staycation isn’t the right word now, since we have all been staying

- so I encourage you to take a “nearcation” or vacation beyond

your backyard. Far enough away to still feel the benefits of being

on vacation, yet close enough to feel safe. There are some great

discounts to be found. Many of our local hotels are running specials

at 20-30% off already discounted nightly rates.

Ready to get out, but not stay out? Take a walk through the Morikami

and enjoy the Gardens, stop by the Cornell Museum, learn

about the History of Delray Beach at the Delray Beach Historical

Society. Do you have little ones? Go to the Sandoway Discovery Center

for an animal feeding or schedule a time at the Delray Beach

Children’s Garden. Read the community’s Covid-19 stories in the

“Unsung” exhibit at the Spady Museum. You can even cruise with

Delray Yacht Cruises or play a round of golf at Putt’n Around.

Not quite ready to get out? Schedule a virtual vacation for yourself

and unplug for a long weekend. Order pickup from your favorite

restaurant, online shop from your favorite boutique and get outside

and enjoy the fresh air!

Supporting local doesn’t just mean shops and restaurants. Spring

would have been fundraising season for many of our nonprofits.

Spend some time with your loved ones and learn more about our

70+ nonprofit members at the Delray Chamber of Commerce and

find one who’s mission really speaks to you. Whether you are able

to donate your time, talent or treasure, each of our nonprofits could

use your help!

Whatever you decide to do this July to support local, we encourage

you to use #KeepLocalsAfloat and post about your experience

on social media! Take a few minutes and write a Google or Facebook

review.

Good Guy, Restaurant

Savior and Hometown Hero

If anyone knows how to take

lemons and make lemonade

in a pinch, it’s John Brewer.

The South Florida native co-founded the Socially Distant Supper

Club (SDSC) that has rescued a calvary of family-owned

restaurants from extinction since COVID-19 came to town.

What started out as a quick fix to save faltering food businesses

has become a Facebook Group Page for 15,000 fans and foodies.

It has also saved some restaurants from closing their doors after

being ordered to curtail their businesses amid the pandemic.

For Brewer, the SDSC has been part philanthropy and part history.

His stepfather owned The Driftwood in Lantana and he spent

his teen years busing tables there. “I missed out on a lot in high

school because I had to work at the restaurant. Looking back I realize

it made me who I am. That’s why I have a soft spot for restaurants

and truly feel for what they go through, especially in these

tough times,” said the commercial real estate broker who specializes

in restaurants.

Not only did the Driftwood close after three years, but so did

his parent’s marriage. That life-change cemented Brewer’s appreciation

for family and fatherhood. “I am a big proponent of dads

being involved with their kids. Children need their fathers – or a

supportive male role model,” said Brewer, who will riff on the subject

of fatherhood at the drop of a hat (and is stepdad to Kailan).

Though he did not set out to become a hometown hero with the

creation of the SDSC (with friend Iain Paterson). It just evolved

from a conversation the two had after the pandemic hit South

Florida in March.

“I started seeing restaurants close down; many of them did not

know how to change their business model during the pandemic.

They didn’t know how much food to order or how much help they

needed.”

But luckily Brewer did.

That’s because his history is a mix of jobs that span the map

and the manner of food exchange. The Atlantic High School grad

worked in restaurants and bars in New York City (his favorite being

“dive bars”). He waited tables and managed bars in off-beat

places such as Polly Esther’s, and the Tile Bar on the lower East

Side of Manhattan.

From there he went to Las Vegas and was general manager of

Body English at the Hard Rock Resort & Casino, the Palms and the

Playboy Club.

But after getting reacquainted with his high school sweetheart

(Diane) in 2010, he put roots down in his hometown. “I was ready

to leave Vegas and went to Austin, Texas for an interview but ultimately

came back to Delray. I love Delray and now that I’m home,

it has solidified how I always felt about being here.”

It also solidified his feelings for Diane. The two were married

in 2012 and Brewer went on to become general manager of Max’s

Social House, Ceviche Tapas Bar and the Breakers restaurant HMF.

That’s why he continues to be the cheerleader and fearless leader

of the SDSC. He does live Facebook videos almost daily and has

a Facebook page that hails restaurants newest culinary creations.

It’s not only become a meeting place for foodies around town, but

business has increased exponentially in many restaurants.

When asked for comments about Brewer, 113 people stepped

up to sing his praises: “John Brewer is a Rockstar! A leader who

brought the residents and restaurateurs together to save businesses

and educate residents of lesser known restaurants. It’s a

beautiful thing!” - Anita Teichman-Comiskey.

Rosemary Kelly agrees. “It’s so incredible that the SDSC has

mobilized and led those impacted in our community so positively.

Not only have the restaurants benefited, but as a member

I have learned about so many new places in Delray that I hadn’t

heard of before. Thank you so much - your energy, passion, and

enthusiasm are infectious and inspiring.”

Not only has Brewer been a constant presence on the SDSC

Facebook Page, but his kind heart has been on display as well.

Dina Branham, owner of Wine House Social, saw Brewer jump

into rescue mode when he heard of her plight. He raised money for

her legal bills and rallied the foodies and good Samaritans in Delray.

“John and this group have taken a terrible situation and volunteered

their hearts and souls to support restaurants. As a small

business owner (zoned as a bar and retail store) I wasn’t sure

I would be included. When I reached out I was welcomed with

open arms. The people I’ve met are incredible and It’s been a

blessing. John has such a passion for SDSC and the community.

They helped with my zoning challenges and were generous and

kind throughout the ordeal.”

If you go the SDSC Facebook page you will see Brewer touting

restaurants and showing pictures of their luscious fare. Each day

different restaurants are featured, and a foodie flash mob springs

into action. Local restaurants post their menus with meals (and

specials) available that day. Members check the SDSC Facebook

page and call their orders in a day in advance, giving restaurants

time to prepare the meals.

The concept has been so successful that Brewer and his crew

have been featured on the “Weekend Today” show with Kerry

Sanders. Though Brewer is a superstar of sorts it has not gone to

his head. “I consider myself blessed. This whole SDSC has steamrolled

bigger than me and I want to keep it going. We try to keep

the citizens engaged with what ‘s going on in our village by the sea.”

The “we” are volunteers who help Brewer take command of

the burgeoning demands of this flash mob restaurant COVID

– related concept. There are chapters opening up around the

country and all over Florida. The concept is genius and the congratulations

and salutations are endless.

BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM

How Can I Improve

My Pets Immune System?

The last three months have been stressful for all of us, including

our pets. It started with a shortage of toilet paper, then disposable

gloves, facemasks, hand sanitizers and now food, specifically

meat. Everything has changed because of this quarantine. Businesses

have closed; shopping became limited, and many other social

norms have been modified. Our pets’ lives have been affected as well.

You are home when they are used to resting while you were at work.

Now you are walking them to excessively. You are probably overeating

out of stress and boredom and your guilt tells you that they need treats

too. Could this cause a problem? Of course it can, lifestyle changes will

affect your pets in the same manner it affects humans.

If we have learned one thing from this whole endeavor is that we

really need to protect and build a healthy immune system to fight off

health challenges. The immune system is a complex network of cells,

tissues, organs, and the substances they make that helps the body fight

infections and other diseases. The immune system includes white

blood cells, organs, and tissues of the lymph system, such as the thymus,

spleen, tonsils, lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and bone marrow.

The first step in retaining a healthy immune system is removing exposure

to toxins that will debilitate these organs that we need functioning

at their optimal level. Many household and yard products contain toxic,

unnatural components that compromise the immune system. Drugs and

medications often have this same compromising effect. We understand

that we cannot always eliminate exposure toxins that are all around us,

however we can help the body eliminate them once they invade.

Good, species appropriate nutrition is the perfect system for delivering

nutrients that are needed to maintain and build the structure of

the whole body but also acts to remove various toxins that we all have

been exposed to. It is important to have diversity in the diets of our

pets and ourselves as different foods remove specific toxins. Examples

of this are seen with foods such as cilantro and chlorella which can

remove many heavy metals such as mercury and aluminum plus both

are a source of micronutrients needed to strengthen the system.

We also must realize that the body is dynamic which means it is always

changing. Parts or the body break down and rebuild in an ongoing

basis. We have seen complete elimination and healing of pets and their

caregivers with just a simple lifestyle change by revamping the diet.

The impact of supplying the cleansing and nutritive power of a variety

of different botanicals, herbal foods and spices into the body impacts

the energetic process to heal and to fight the assaults on the body.

We know it is not about what we face but how the body responds to

these assaults. Our pets often reflect and respond to our energies and

fears. The stronger our physical, mental, and emotional strength, the

stronger the immune response will be. The cleaner our environment

and our food supply are, the healthier our immune system which will

result in a more resistant body. We feel that it is imperative that we

follow this system of immune building as an ongoing lifestyle change.

Upon doing this, we can all be more confident in standing up to fight

any physical threats that we encounter.
