FROM THE
EDITOR
GIVE
THANKS THIS
NOVEMBER!!
This year has gone by so fast. It seems like only yesterday we
were thinking about the kids finishing school for the summer
and here we are honoring our veterans on the eleventh hour of
the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
Veterans Day is a time to honor all of those who have served the country
in war or peace, for their love of country, patriotism, and to Thank them for
the sacrifices they made, all for the common good.
We also celebrate Thanksgiving Day on Thursday November 23rd. A
time for us to give Thanks for the blessings of the past year. When family
and friends gather to enjoy a turkey dinner and apple, or pumpkin pie topped with whipped cream or ice cream,
(sounds yummy!) Then add to the mix, football, which is as much a part of the holiday as the meal.
You could also ‘rise and shine’ nice and early and join in a tradition here in Delray Beach, the 37th annual Delray
Beach Turkey Trot 5K on Saturday November 18, 2023, at Anchor Park. You won’t regret it. You’ll set yourself up for the
day and experience one of the most scenic 5K routes in the United States. Now you won’t feel guilty when you overindulge
on dinner on the 23rd. It’s a win – win!!
We must also give Thanks to have two very special people in our community. Virginia and Harvey Kimmel. Their
generosity and support of so many programs in our city is mind-blowing. Read all about our ‘City People’ in this issue.
We have so much to Thank the Delray Beach Police Department for and the one thing you could do to show your
Thanks is to volunteer! Becoming a volunteer, you will be made to feel wanted and needed and you will be treated as
part of the Police Department family. Read on to find out how you can volunteer and make a difference to our city!
Finally, I would like to say Thank you to you, our readers. You are
fabulous and we are so grateful for your continued support.
We wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!
The Symphonia Partners with
Milagro Center for its Youth
Virginia and Harvey Kimmel String Orchestra and
Self-Esteem Program
The SYMPHONIA, South Florida’s premier chamber orchestra,
has announced an exciting partnership with Milagro Center in
Delray Beach to serve as the new home for the orchestra’s youth
outreach program, Virginia and Harvey Kimmel String Orchestra
and Self-Esteem Program.
Celebrating its 7th year, Virginia and Harvey Kimmel String Orchestra
and Self-Esteem Program was conceived to provide children
from underserved families with the opportunity to learn to play
a string instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) while developing
self-esteem through positive instruction and encouragement. The
program’s initiative has deep roots in the notion of social justice
and inclusion. The Symphonia was determined to create a free and
substantive program that would bring music into the lives of children
who would not otherwise, but deserve to, have access to such
an opportunity.
100-FOOT CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING
Didn’t it just feel like we wrapped up our holiday decorations?
Regardless, it’s time to get those boxes down from
the attic and pour the eggnog because it’s officially holi-

day season! November is Family Stories Month and that is exactly
what the holidays are all about: making new memories with family
and friends. One of the biggest events of the year for Downtown
Delray is the lighting of our famous 100-foot Christmas
Tree. Held Tuesday, November 28 from 6 to 9 p.m., the lighting
and Yuletide Fair is Delray’s official kick-off to the seasonal festivities.
You and everyone you know are welcome to experience
the Holiday Village, where even in the sunshine there is a feeling
of a Winter Wonderland. This event features not only the tree
lighting but also food vendors, family-friendly activities, musical
performances, carousel rides, ice skating and more. If you’ve yet
to attend this event, or are a tree lighting veteran, it’s important
to get there early so you don’t miss Santa arriving and lighting
the tree. It’s a magical experience that you and a few thousand of
your community members won’t forget. There will be festivities
from the end of November and throughout December, so make
sure you check the complete calendar of events by visiting www.
downtowndelraybeach.com or calling (561) 243-1077. The event
is held at Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave.
37TH ANNUAL DELRAY BEACH TURKEY TROT 5K
Looking for a way to spread gratitude
or feel the gratitude? Then
lace up the racing shoes because
it’s time to hit the pavement. November
is National Gratitude Month and while
the holidays are a great time for many,
it’s a sad time for others, especially
those who suffer from food insecurity.
The 37th Annual Delray Beach Turkey
Trot 5K is the answer to have fun, spend time with friends and
family, burn a few calories in anticipation of Thanksgiving, and
- most importantly - help support families in need. It could quite
possibly be one of the most enjoyable runs around because the
race is held along one of the most scenic 5K routes in the nation.
Think about it, most people are battling snowy sidewalks in November,
but you get to pleasantly jog in sunny, warm-ish weather
along A1A. What could be better than that! The hub of the event
is located at Anchor Park, 340 S. Ocean Blvd. where the festivities
and start/finish line are located. Held Saturday, November 18,
registration and packet pickup begins at 6:30 a.m., music and entertainment
begins at 7 a.m., the race begins at 7:30 a.m. and the
awards ceremony is held at 8:45 a.m. Registration for adults is
$35 and $20 for young teens and children. Each participant will
receive a commemorative personalized race bib, event shirt and
customized finisher medal. Please visit https://victorysportsmgt.
com/dbtt5k/ for more information and to register.
the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar
becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a
thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a gentle best friend. Through
Priscilla’s eyes, Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American
myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage,
from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland,
in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy,
and fame. Priscilla is both written and directed by acclaimed
American filmmaker Sofia Coppola, director of the movies The
Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette, Somewhere,
The Bling Ring, The Beguiled, and On the Rocks.
► What Happens Later - Directed by Meg Ryan
Two ex lovers, Bill (David Duchovny) and Willa (Meg Ryan)
get snowed in at a regional airport overnight. Indefinitely
delayed, Willa, a magical thinker, and Bill, a catastrophic one, find
themselves just as attracted to and annoyed by one another as they
did decades earlier. But as they unpack the riddle of their mutual
past and compare their lives to the dreams they once shared, they
begin to wonder if their reunion is mere coincidence, or something
more enchanted. What Happens Later is directed by American
actress turned filmmaker Meg Ryan, making her second feature
film after directing Ithaca (2015) previously.
and rescue Floyd from a fate even worse than pop-culture obscurity.
Return to The Hunger Games, the landmark film franchise that has
earned over $3 billion globally, with Lionsgate’s adaptation of
Suzanne Collins’ bestseller The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Years
before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-yearold
Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth) is the last hope for his fading
lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war
Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the
young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray
Baird (Rachel Zegler), the girl tribute from impoverished District 12.
But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly
singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to
turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship
and newfound political savvy, Snow & Lucy Gray’s race against time
to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird, and who is a
snake. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is once again directed by
Floyd (Golden Globe nominated electropop sensation Troye Sivan),
John Dory (Eric André; Sing 2), Spruce (Grammy winner Daveed
Hell If We Don’t
Change Our Ways: A
Memoir
BY BRITTANY MEANS
If success is measured by the difficulties
in our lives that we must overcome,
then Brittany Means should get the gold.
As a child of a nomadic, unstable mother,
Means survives on her wit and her
mother’s co-dependent love affair with
her children.
But, as often is the case with unstable
adults, Means’ mother would disappear
into thin air with assorted suitors and
come back as if nothing happened.
Means was often left with her grandparents
and had to adjust to a bible belt
worship of the lord, while Mean’s real love
affair was simply watching TV.
In this riveting true story, we witness
(with shock and awe) how a child could
survive abuse, neglect, violence, and instability
yet triumph as an adult.
With no money and little support, Brittany
took care of her younger brother,
managed the instability of her home life,
and tried to make sense of the troublesome
world around her.
As a young adult, Means struggled with
some of the same issues that plagued her
mother. But the ultimate triumph was her
realization that she could alter the cycle of
violence she witnessed as a child.
Means’ crafts stories that are too sad to
be real yet actually happened. Sometimes,
her prose is funny and sad simultaneously,
while other times, it is colorful and statuesque,
like an offbeat artists’ creation.
This true tale of self-preservation has a
unique narrative style that is part memoir
and part coming-of-age tale. The result
has been called “a masterpiece, a marvel,
and a sparkling example of a woman’s
ability to withstand the most horrific experiences
― and still thrive.”
And she has.
groundhog and his hedgehog best friend
Florida is widely known for its alligators, panthers,
pythons, and pesky mosquitoes, but did you know it also
has crocodiles, bears, scarlet-striped snakes, and more
species of fireflies than any other state? How about a
tiny lizard that swims through central Florida’s ancient
dunes, a red widow spider that hides in palmettos, or
that wild flamingos, common two centuries ago, are
slowly reappearing. In her latest book, wildlife photographer
and writer Kirsten Hines takes audiences on her
three-year journey into Florida’s wilds to explore its impressive
array of animals.
HEALTH & BEAUTY | PAIN RELIEF
BY DR. SAFRANSKI
Navigating Auto Accidents
THE ROLE OF CHIROPRACTIC NON-SURGICAL
DECOMPRESSION THERAPY
Auto accidents can have a profound impact on one’s physical and
mental well-being. From minor fender benders to severe collisions, the
aftermath of such incidents often leads to various injuries, with back
and spine-related issues being prevalent. In these situations, chiropractic
care, particularly non-surgical decompression therapy, emerges as
a valuable and effective solution for promoting healing and recovery.
UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF AUTO ACCIDENTS
Auto accidents can cause a range of injuries, including whiplash,
herniated discs, and other spine-related problems. These injuries
can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and a diminished quality
of life. Traditional treatments often involve pain medications and,
in severe cases, surgical interventions. However, chiropractic care
offers a non-invasive, drug-free alternative focusing on the body’s
natural healing abilities.
CHIROPRACTIC APPROACH TO AUTO ACCIDENT INJURIES
Chiropractors assess the patient’s condition through thorough
examinations and diagnostic tests. Chiropractors often recommend
non-surgical decompression therapy for individuals suffering from
auto accident injuries. This innovative approach involves gentle
stretching of the spine using a traction table or similar device. By
creating negative pressure within the disc, decompression therapy
promotes the retraction or repositioning of herniated or bulging
discs, relieving pressure on nerves and reducing pain. One of the
significant advantages of non-surgical decompression therapy is
its non-invasive nature. Unlike surgery, it doesn’t involve incisions,
52 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
anesthesia, or lengthy recovery periods. Patients can often resume
their daily activities shortly after each session. Additionally, decompression
therapy addresses the root cause of the pain by facilitating
the body’s natural healing process, rather than merely masking the
symptoms with medications.
Chiropractic care goes beyond symptom management. Chiropractors
emphasize the importance of overall well-being, incorporating
lifestyle changes, exercise, and nutritional advice into their treatment
plans. By addressing the physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors
contributing to pain and discomfort, chiropractic care provides a
holistic approach to healing, ensuring long-term relief and improved
quality of life for patients recovering from auto accident injuries.
Real Stories, Real Results and Countless patients have attested
to the effectiveness of chiropractic non-surgical decompression
therapy in their recovery journeys. From regaining mobility to experiencing
significant pain reduction, these testimonials underscore
the transformative impact of this non-invasive treatment approach.
Real-life success stories serve as powerful evidence of chiropractic
care’s efficacy in treating auto accident-related injuries.
In conclusion, a path to healing in the Aftermath of Auto Accidents
and seeking the right treatment is crucial for a full and speedy recovery.
Chiropractic non-surgical decompression therapy offers
hope for individuals dealing with back and spine-related injuries. By
embracing this natural, patient-centered approach, individuals can
navigate the challenges posed by auto accidents, reclaim their lives,
and embark on a journey toward healing and well-being.
6 Common Fitness Mistakes
You are working out right and eating well - but you’re having a hard time
really seeing tangible results. Maybe it’s time to take a closer look at your
fitness regimen to see where you might be going wrong.
Here are 6 common mistakes I see clients making in their fitness journey.
1. BLAMING BETTYS
I hear this quite often, “Oh so and so has amazing genetics” or, “I’ll
always be this way because I have a slow metabolism.” Where sometimes
this is true, most often it is not the true case. There are very
few genetic or common hormone issues that most can’t be overcome
with the right help. It might just take a little extra work and research
on your part to find a program that works for you. People usually use
this as an excuse to slack when in reality they’re just not willing to
put in the work and rather “blame” it on something that they see as
a legit excuse. With the right type of professional guidance, nutrition,
determination, and of course patience, it’s possible to overcome genetics
and hormone issues and get the results you are really
looking for.
2. LAZY LESLIES
If you’re not really pushing yourself each workout,
your results are going to be lackluster. You
pretty much get out of it what you put in to it.
If you quit 2 seconds after that burn sets in,
you’re giving up too early. It’s not necessarily
no pain no gain, but it is definitely
no burn no gain! Don’t be so quick to throw
that dumbbell down when the going gets
tough. I always tell my clients to think about
their goal when they’re ready to give up and
that laziness is NOT an injury! Most of the
time our minds quit before our bodies do.
Really push yourself and you might be
surprised with the results that come.
3. DISTRACTED DIANAS
Finding yourself gazing out the window
thinking about anything else than
your workout? Then maybe it’s time
to switch things up and try a new class
or workout program. I’m not saying
your workout should always be a total
boatload of fun but you should somewhat
enjoy it or at the very least LOVE the way
you feel when you’re done. If your workout is
totally boring you, it’s time to move on. How
can you expect results out of something you
totally dread?
4. SCARED SUSIES
Ok, this is probably no surprise but to create a change you need
the right resistance. I know there are some trainers and fitness gurus
out there that swear by lifting pencils, but my personal opinion is the
heavier the better. Within safe guidelines of course! Unless you’re
taking steroids or your diet is in huge surplus of junk you are not going
to look like a man. I’ve transformed hundreds of women to prove
lifting heavy produces ah-mazing results!
5. CARDIO CARLYS
While cardio definitely has its time and place, I see too many
people skipping the weights and becoming cardio crazed. Yes,
certain types of cardio help aid in fat loss but you will not
maximize your results with cardio alone. The best shaped
bodies (in my opinion) come from the perfect mix of resistance
training with high intensity cardio. The days of
long bouts of boring cardio are over! Thank goodness!
6. IMPATIENT INGRIDS
All too often I see people give up way too early
on in the game because they’re not exactly where
they want to be! Fitness takes time! Whether it
takes 3 months or 1 year, that’s ok! Everyone
is on their own time frame and results will
come differently for each person. Each time I
came back post-pregnancy I would work for
months and months with little to no change,
then all of a sudden the weight would just fall
off and everything would come into play. You
might be just like me! So, give it time. One of
the hardest parts about fitness is to keep going
when the results are slow. Usually, clients
are just on the verge of seeing results when
they quit. Have patience and just keep going!
It takes months for the average person to really
start seeing serious changes, so just be
consistent and stick with it.
SAS is an innovative program, newly introduced to South Florida,
designed to help veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury
(TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) recover their brain
health. The SAS initiative is committed to showcasing and developing
holistic, proven approaches to effectively treat and rehabilitate
veterans, aiming to gather sufficient funds to begin treatment
for one hundred deserving veterans over the next 24 months.
The SAS Program, established under IBRF, seeks to accelerate
development in brain cures by supporting state-of-the-art translational
clinical research. With a strong Steering Committee, including
Dr. Phillip DeFina, a pioneer in neuroscience, and other
experts deeply connected to military and veteran communities,
the program aims to bring revolutionary changes in the treatment
of brain injuries and dysfunctions among veterans.
This is a significant step towards addressing the long-standing
effects of war on combat veterans, providing them with the tools
to empower themselves and reclaim their place in society. Help
thousands of veterans suffering from brain wounds and offering
new hope and recovery to them and their families. One of our
Army veterans, Elizabeth Joy (Collatura-Rosenberg) who flew helicopters
and was released from service in 2011 as a Major says:
“Returning to society after serving multiple combat tours in the
Army was more of a challenge than I had anticipated. The invisible
wounds of war persisted in creating chaos in my new civilian
life and I knew that I needed the best care available. That’s when
I found Dr. DeFina and the “Save A Soldier Project”. Dr. DeFina is
not only an Army Veteran, but also a Clinical Neuroscientist who
has developed a program for veterans with traumatic brain injury
(TBI) and post-traumatic stress (PTS) under the wing of the
International Brain Research Foundation. Thankfully, I was selected
to undergo their month-long Biohacking Brain Boot Camp.
It has given me a new start and fresh hope for the future.”
JADI AUTO RECON
Make Sure Your Car Is Road
Ready From Top To Bottom
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS BY MELISSA KORMAN
Jonathan Augusto was born to be in the car
business. His father raced cars and inspired
young Jonathan to change a tire in three minutes.
COPYRIGHTED
That was a long time ago. But Augusto has been a car guy ever
since then. Call it happenstance or family breeding, but the
young man who could change a tire at lightning speed now
owns a full collision auto shop who does body work on domestic
and exotic cars.
Called Jadi Auto Recon this full collision shop also does custom
painting, reconditioning, interior repairs, bumper refinishing,
headlight Restoration and more.
Their reputation supersedes conventional wisdom and is the
reason the shop has grown from from 800 square-feet to 8000.
That doesn’t surprise Gary Weston of Delray Beach. The car
collector has been taking his beloved cars to Jadi Auto Recon for
the past 10 years.
60 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
And, this man knows a lot about cars. He owned a car wash in
Delray Beach and was a car dealer in New York. He also brings his
Bentley (and his 11 other cars) to Augusto to fix dents, scratches or
paint touch ups.
“I send a lot of people to Jonathan and have never heard one single
complaint. He is always there and he can do anything. It is very
difficult to paint cars today. They have a base coat that makes it very
hard to match the color. Jonathan gets it perfect every time. He really
does great work. I bring him all my cars,” said Weston.
Steve of Delray Beach is equally impressed – not only with
Augusto’s work ethic and talent, but with this humanity and humility.
“I had a wonderful experience with Jadi Auto Body. Jonathan went
above and beyond to help my aunt and myself with her car repairs. It

was in a fender bender which required towing. He was very kind and
patient with her and her concerns. He not only had the car towed to
his shop, but he drove my aunt home.”
Steve was impressed with their follow up and constant updates
about the car. “Upon completion, Jonathan drove the car to her
residence. They were Fast! Accurate! And, the workmanship was
excellent and the service second to none.”
A few weeks later Steve had some concerns and Augusto told
him to bring the car back. “In two hours he called me back and
assured me he had checked and repaired it at no charge. I highly
recommend them.”
After 28 years in the business Augusto has gained a loyal following.
There is a good reason. He is a man on a mission.
“I have always loved cars. When I was young, I wanted the
challenge of fixing something. Now that I am a little older, I like to
help my customers get their cars looking good and working well.”
With cars so scare those are magic words. With the lack (and high
price) of new and used cars, people want to keep their cars longer
and preserve their beauty. That’s one reason Augusto sees so many
people bringing in their cars for reconditioning.
“I brought my BMW in for an estimate. Jonathan was professional
and honest. I scheduled my car to be fixed and he had it done on time.
It looks better than it did brand new!”
There is other news at Jadi Auto Recon.
Jonathon Grant Augusto (Jonathan Jr.), who worked with his father
in the car business, has enlisted in the Navy. “My son will be in a
submarine in the navy because he wants to serve his country.”
Jonathon Sr.’s wife Toni has also made cars her life’s work and
passion. She works at Napleton, a very large group of dealerships,
and is a director of Service, Parts and the Bodyshop. “We both share a
passion for cars and I am so proud of the excellent work that Jonathan
does. We go to races together and we enjoy our life, and our work.”
Augusto has done such a great job repairing and refreshing cars
that he works on domestic and exotic cars for large Auto Dealerships.
He also devised ways to keep cars looking good despite the South
Florida terrain. “We have a ceramic coating we put on cars to keep
them shiny. The beach salt air can erode the metal of your car, we
have an undercoating that keeps it rust free for quite a while.”
Jadi also paints fiberglass boats with the same perfectionism. “I
send my boats to Delray because of the quality of work and painting
at Jadi. They are old school in their craftsmanship. Jonathan knows
how to fix what other people have to replace.”
If your car needs detailing, collision work, painting, reconditioning
(or anything else) call and make an appointment. They also take all
insurance.
They look forward to meeting you and making your car sparkle.
PARAGON THEATERS AND PENNY LANES
WHAT’S THERE TO DO IN DELRAY BEACH?
Movies, Bowling, Arcade Games…
Food And More At Paragon
Theaters And Penny Lanes
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF PARAGON THEATERS AND PENNY LANES
Owners Michael Whalen and Michael Wilson understand
that people want to enjoy their spare time (and vacation)
to the max. They also know that going to the movies – or
bowling – should be a luxurious yet comfortable experience.
62 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
But, the past few years people have been enjoying themselves
with premium TV and movies channels while indulging in
gourmet meals at home. As for bowling, it was something
everyone had on hold for a while.
But life has sprung back into action, and Whalen and Wilson
knew they had to up their game to get people excited to go out to
the movies and bowl a few games. They also knew that everyone
has a kid inside of them just waiting to get out. That’s why they enhanced
this sensory explosion of goodies to include sophisticated
arcade games, augmented reality bowling and the latest in movie
viewing technology.
To call Paragon Theaters luxurious is an understatement. Being
inside one of their 12 theaters at Delray Marketplace is like reaching
for - and attaining - nirvana. The exclusive Lux Box VIP Dine-
In seats are luxurious, have private heated reclining seats, and are
separated from general admission seats. They’re called the ‘best
seats in the house,’ because they provide privacy with a bit of VIP
celebrity styling. They also have retractable tray tables with QR
codes that give you the option to have upscale dine-in service before
and during the film.
You can dine with ease (while watching the film) with food delivered
directly from their restaurant and bar, The Agency Kitchen &
Bar. All you do is scan a QR code from your mobile phone and the server
knows exactly where to bring your food or drinks. You can order
during the pre-show or anytime during the film with no interruptions.
There is more to this luxury movie experience that will excite
your senses and calm you down from anything life throws at you.
They have a huge IMAX screen (the only one in Palm Beach County)
with upgraded Laser Projection and a new sound system that rivals
that of premium concerts. As a matter of fact, this is one of the only
dine-in IMAX locations in the country.
Paragon Theaters is also home to a state-of-the-art movie screen
known as the Axis15 Extreme. This screen – that’s wall-to-wall –
has a 15-degree tilt that gives the viewer the luxury of relaxation
and entertainment. It also has Dolby Atmos® immersive sound, 4k
Laser Projection, and features their exclusive Lux Box VIP Dine-In
Seating privacy.
If you’re looking for a more active form of entertainment, try
their technology-driven bowling center, Penny Lanes. This digital
bowling experience is not what you ever thought bowling would be.
There are 16 lanes that take the digital age and combine it with the
game to create a sensory extravaganza.
You get the comfort of a luxury bowling suite with plush leather
lounges and big screen TVs. It also features Sync Gamified Bowling;
interactive games and scoring themes that are colorful and
tech-driven to engage your senses and your skill.
An added perk is their Spark augmented reality VIP bowling.
This dynamic ball - lane interaction has colorful displays and animations
projected onto the lane that follows your ball as it rolls.
This vibrant interactive background will create any mood you
seek. The augmented-reality bowling experience is so exciting it’s
best to reserve a lane in advance (online) to guarantee you get a
space. Don’t forget, all Penny Lanes guests can order food and
have it brought to your lane while bowling.
To round out this ‘ultimate entertainment destination’ is a
full-scale Penny Lanes Arcade. If you think that games are for
kids, think again. There are over 40 arcade games with video
and scoring components that will thrill you, and your kids. All
you need is one refillable Arcade Game Card and you can play
all day and redeem tickets. There are virtual reality games and
redemption games.
They even have the latest video game craze, Playbox, a multiplayer
digital video game (for up to 5 players at a time). It has
a 16’ long digital screen with 6 to 8 rotating games. It has been
called the modern-day digital version of a Carnival Midway Game.
Amidst all the activity (within Penny Lanes) is a terrific restaurant
and bar called The Agency Kitchen & Bar. The food is excellent
and they have a seasonal menu of local handcrafted food and
drinks. There is a full selection of craft beer, assorted wines from
local wineries, breweries and unique cocktails. There are also
hand-tossed pizzas, street tacos and unique appetizers.
Included in this food fare are football and sporting menu’s,
rotating seasonal menu’s, indoor and outdoor seating, and bar
seating. There are also different screens in the restaurant so you
can watch sporting events and games. But remember, you have
the luxury of ordering food from your Lux Box VIP Dine-In movie
Seats or Penny Lanes Seating.
“Paragon Theaters is the gold standard in movie-going with
innovative Lux Box VIP Dine-in Seating, Axis15 Extreme tilted
screens and IMAX with Laser projection and Dolby Atmos immersive
sound. Mike and Mike have successfully built a ‘customer-first’
entertainment company with a diverse portfolio of excitement for
the whole family,” says Jared Comess, VP of Marketing at Paragon.
Paragon Theaters and Penny Lanes are also wonderful for celebrations
of all kinds, whether personal or business. You can create
your own games and menus to fit the occasion.
Come and join in on the fun! Every day is a holiday at Paragon
Theaters and Penny Lanes.
Visit www.ParagonTheaters.com and www.PennyLanes.com
CRANE’S BEACH HOUSE BOUTIQUE HOTEL & LUXURY VILLAS
Another Season,
Another Reason
BY CARLI BRINKMAN | PHOTOS BY ANNE PODLECKI
Sure, that first winter snowfall can be dreamy, but it’s
pretty much downhill from there as the temperatures
drop and the ice and slush wreak havoc on our daily lives.
Fortunately, the holiday season can be just as magical without
enduring biting cold winds, shoveling the driveaway, and
de-icing the windshield, when you head south to Florida for
a Coastal Christmas Wonderland escape. And there are few places
that get into the beachy holiday spirit quite like Delray Beach and
the charming home-away-from-home paradise of Crane’s Beach
House Boutique Hotel & Luxury Villas.
Every year, Crane’s Beach House decks out its lush tropical
courtyard, meandering paths, and open-air tiki lounge with
coastal holiday décor, bringing to life the region’s seasonal charm
that, for many of us, carry just as many cherished memories and
traditions as the customary winter holiday experience. What’s
more, Crane’s one-bedroom suites and villas are ideally suited for
times when you’re traveling, but still want to feel right at home.
The apartment-style rooms each feature fully-equipped kitchens,
a dining table, a living room and bedroom, and some also contain
a patio or balcony. When you want to get away for the holiday season,
but still enjoy the comforts of home, there’s no better place to
stay than at Crane’s Beach House.
Christmas tree and Holiday Village capture the spirit of the season
from just after Thanksgiving, through New Year’s Eve. Visitors and
season, visitors can experience the annual Holiday Street Parade,
the Holiday Boat Parade, and the annual tree lighting, the annual
menorah lighting, the Jingle Bell Jog 5k, and to wrap it up, the New
Year’s Eve Fireworks.
With so many reasons to come and experience the holidays in
Delray Beach, Crane’s is making it that much more enticing with
unseasonably low rates that make the property the most affordable
way to experience luxury in the market this holiday. And if that’s not
tempting enough, Crane’s will be announcing a limited-time Black
seating areas with fire pits, and a hanging hammock under
a large tiki hut. From the hotel, guests can stroll east just one block
SIPERSTEIN DERMATOLOGY
Offering New Technology
To Detect Melanoma
BY NICOL JENKINS | PHOTOS BY MELISSA KORMAN
Siperstein Dermatology Group offers a group of
Board-Certified dermatologists, physician assistants,
nurse practitioners, and licensed aestheticians who
specialize in patient-centered dermatologic care.
66 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
JENNIFER RICHTER, PA-C PERFORMING DERMAGRAPHIX TOTAL BODY PHOTOGRAPHY
Jennifer Richter, a Board-Certified Physician Assistant
who has been at Siperstein Dermatology
for five years, focuses on helping patients by using
her medical expertise and advanced artificial
intelligence to diagnose skin cancer at its earliest
stages, before it becomes life threatening.
Prior to working at Siperstein Dermatology Group,
Jennifer worked in the Department of Dermatology
at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC.
She earned her Physician Assistant Degree and Master
of Science from Cornell University. Jennifer has a
particular expertise in dermoscopy, a non-invasive
technique, which uses a combination of magnification
and light to detect skin cancer early and prevent
unnecessary surgical procedures or biopsies. While
at Memorial Sloan Kettering, she worked alongside
international leaders in the dermatology and dermoscopy
field.
“I joined Siperstein Dermatology Group because I loved how
they prioritize the patient experience, making sure that each patient
is provided with the best care and outcome possible. It is a
place where patients are not just a number. They are truly treated
like family. I immediately knew that people genuinely like to work
there. With a culture that always puts the patient first, I continue
to be amazed at how the practice continues to grow by investing
in the latest technology and providing state-of-the-art procedures
and services to our community,” said Jennifer.
She brings her advanced training and clinical experience working
with patients with dysplastic nevus syndrome, melanoma, basal
cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and other complex skin
cancers, in addition to those with a history of radiation therapy and
chemotherapy. She also enjoys engaging in clinical research to keep
current with advances in the field.
Siperstein Dermatology offers DermaGraphix Mole Mapping
with AI Technology, which Jennifer is highly trained in using from
her time at Memorial Sloan Kettering. DermaGraphix mole mapping
and tracking analysis uses a high-resolution camera, advanced
software, and whole-body photography to map a patient’s entire
skin surface, creating a photographic baseline of his/her moles. At
follow up visits, artificial intelligence is then utilized to accurately
identify any change in the size, color and shape of lesions, as well as
document any new lesions.
DermaGraphix is the most innovative mole mapping system
available, and it allows Jen to spot new moles more easily as well
as track changes in patients’ existing moles, which is one of the
possible early signs of melanoma. In addition, this system has an
attached dermatoscope, which allows her to visualize and photograph
individual moles using magnification and polarized light to
better detect subtle changes in these moles and patterns that could
be consistent with melanoma. Siperstein Dermatology Group is the
only private practice in Florida to have DermaGraphix with Artificial
Intelligence Technology, and they offer this option to patients at
both offices in Boynton Beach and Boca Raton.
“In an effort to help all of our patients who are at high or low
isk of developing melanoma, we’ve invested in the DermaGraphix
Mole Mapping with Artificial Intelligence Tracking Analysis, which
allows for the earlier detection and treatment of melanoma and
helps to minimize unnecessary biopsies,” said Dr. Elizabeth Nestor.
“DermaGraphix is a total body photography system that we utilized
regularly in our high risk pigmented lesion clinic at Memorial
Sloan Kettering. It was most helpful in detecting new moles and
early changes in existing moles for those patients with numerous
moles or personal history of melanoma. Artificial Intelligence
Tracking Analysis is like having another set of eyes examine your
moles, and I always say the more eyes the better. I feel so fortunate
that we are able to offer this amazing technology to our patients in
South Florida,” said Jennifer.
Jennifer is committed to providing the highest quality patientcentered
care. She brings her warm personality and gentle approach
to patients of all ages and diverse backgrounds. She is
skilled in all aspects of medical and surgical dermatology, including
a particular passion for and expertise in skin cancer prevention,
diagnosis, and treatment. She encourages all patients to undergo
annual total body skin exams.
When you choose Siperstein Dermatology, you’re being cared for
by professionals who are qualified, experienced and caring. Their
goal is to make your experience as positive, helpful, and informative
as possible. When you visit the office, you are treated with the
dignity, respect, and professionalism you deserve. Their knowledgeable
staff is dedicated to providing you with accurate information
and communicating effectively so that you are well-informed.
If you have concerns about developing melanoma, have a mole
that is worrying you, or would just like a thorough full body skin
exam, Siperstein Dermatology Group is here to help. Please schedule
an appointment today so that they can address your concerns
BY LISA MARIE
Thanksgiving is the perfect time to celebrate the harvest and to
give thanks for your blessings of the past year. It is also a great
opportunity to give back to your community. There are several
ways to achieve this and it is not all about giving money.
VOLUNTEER
For some folks, they have more time than money, so
volunteering may be an effective and viable way of giving back to
the community. Consider places you already spend a lot of time
at, such as your child’s school or your congregation, a local nonprofit,
homeless shelter, animal shelter, etc. Your time is valuable
and gifting it can make a world of difference in the lives of many.
The non-profits in your area would be thankful and grateful for
the helping hand.
TURKEY TROT
A Turkey Trot is a footrace usually held on or around
Thanksgiving Day and is fast becoming one of our Thanksgiving
traditions along with the bird itself. So why not gather the family
and participate in the 5K walk/run which will burn enough
calories for that extra piece of Grandma’s pie.
THANKSGIVING BASKET
A hands-on way to help create Thanksgiving dinner for families
struggling in your town. Invite family, friends and colleagues
(e.g. at work, place of worship or social club)
to do the same and then search the web
for your nearest food pantry to
drop off your baskets. Below is a
sample list of things to include: -
1 canned ham or cooked ham
2 cans of Green Beans
2 cans of Yams
1 Bag of Marshmallows
Brown Sugar
2 cans of Corn
1 can Cranberry Sauce
1 box or bag of Stuffing Mix
1 box Instant Mashed Potatoes
(or) 1 box Scalloped or Au Gratin Potatoes
1 box of Corn Bread mix
2 boxes Macaroni and Cheese
1 Non-Perishable Dessert (e.g. pumpkin pie filling, cake mix)
Holiday Napkins and plates!
DONATING
Go through your closet and I’m sure you will find some
clothes, shoes, purses or belts that could be donated to your local
organization. Consider donating your old cellphone, home accents,
books, food or furniture. This simple act of kindness could be
lifechanging and make an immediate difference to those in need.
MAKE TIME FOR KIDS
Whether it’s your own children, kids at your place of worship
or neighborhood kids, taking the time to make them feel special
is priceless. It might be playing a board game together, reading
them a book, taking them to the local park or buying them lunch.
It could even be as simple as listening to what they have to say.
PARTICIPATE IN CHARITIES AND FUNDRAISERS
Finding a cause that you are passionate about will give you
great motivation to assist an existing event or even create a new
fundraising or charity event. Why not have a yard sale for charity,
hold a golf tournament or start a Walkathon. These provide donors
with a healthy option to support your cause. Plus, they usually
take place within a community, which means you can involve
local businesses and supporters. Did you know that you can raise
money by inviting your friends out to eat? When you collaborate
with a local restaurant, you can raise a portion of the night’s
proceeds for your cause. And partnering with a restaurant isn’t as
difficult as you might think. Designing and selling t-shirts is a great
fundraising idea that both individuals and organizations can use to
raise money. A t-shirt fundraiser is a win-win situation for everyone
involved: the campaign creator gets to raise money and promote
their cause via merchandise, and supporters get a memorable item
in return for their donations. Sometimes volunteering, donating,
and raising funds are the most effective and easiest if you join with
others who have already dug the trenches to set up a program.
There’s often no reason to reinvent when you can add your time
and resources to local organizations who have gained positive
reputations in the community. Non-profits are in abundance; you
just need to search on the web for your local area.
RANDOM ACT OF KINDNESS
Volunteering your time and energy can help strengthen your
neighborhood with simple gestures of kindness. Lending a helping
hand to a neighbor who is juggling handfuls of groceries or
moving a piece of furniture is a generous act that leaves a lasting
impression. Helping an elderly neighbor with their lawn or grocery
shopping will make you feel good. Random acts of kindness can
make the most significant impact on someone else. Send ‘good
morning’ messages, compliment a complete stranger, hold the
door for someone, pick up litter at the beach or make dinner for a
family in need. Start today and make somebody’s day better!
COPYRIGHTED
PHILANTHROPY
Sometimes it is easier for you, and the community organization
around you, to give cash donations instead of in-kind gifts.
Financial philanthropy is a great way for local businesses to get
and stay involved in the community. Choosing an organization
and giving a percentage or portion of proceeds each month is
both good for PR and the community.
TRAVEL
The Unbelievable
U.S. Virgin Islands!!!
BY LISA MARIE
1,100 miles away lies an American tropical getaway.
The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly
the Danish West Indies were sold to the U.S. by
Denmark in 1916. They are currently an organized,
unincorporated United States territory in the
Caribbean, therefore requiring no passport to travel.
70 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
The islands consist of three main islands: Saint Croix, Saint
John, and Saint Thomas, along with many other surrounding
smaller islands. Traveling to St. Thomas or St. Croix is
not as expensive as you might think. Spirit Airlines offer direct
flights from Ft. Lauderdale to St. Thomas or American Airlines
from Miami.
With a steady temperature averaging 80 degrees and white
sandy beaches on turquoise blue water, the USVI are a place not
to be missed. Each of the islands is unique. St. Thomas is the most
cosmopolitan of the three, giving the feeling that it’s the largest;
it’s not, St. Croix is, although it is the territorial capital and port
of Charlotte Amalie. St. Thomas offers its visitors a huge array of
attractions from churches, museums, classic island architecture
and shopping. Their ethnic diversity offers diners an array of eating
experiences to bring those taste buds alive. Accommodation
selection is vast too. You can choose from 5 star all-inclusive hotels
like The Ritz-Carlton to colorful and picturesque Bed & Breakfast’s
such as At Home in the Tropics.
Now let us island hop to St John. From Red Hook, St. Thomas it
is a short 15-20 minute ferry ride and from Charlotte Amalie will
take around 45 minutes. If you hired a car while on St. Thomas
you can take one of the car barges traveling from Red Hook to
Cruz Bay, St. John. For more information on ferry times and prices
visit www.vinow.com/stjohn/getting_there/.
St. John is the smallest of the three islands and nearly twothirds
of it is a national park. There you can take a 2- or 3-hour
National Park guided tour to experience this paradise of sub-tropical
forests, hundreds of species of plants, including bay rum trees
and orchids and lots of tropical birds. If a guided tour is not for
you, visit www.stjohnusvi.com for all the information needed to
check out this island on your own. St. John is also renowned as
a ‘reader’s paradise’ with its spectacular secluded beaches, turquoise
waters, colorful coral and tropical fish. Even though this is
the smallest island there is still a vast array of accommodations to
choose from. Luxury resorts, condos, cottages, guest houses and
the world’s leading eco-resorts and campgrounds.
Now we are heading to St. Croix, the largest of the USVI. Unfortunately,
there are no ferries offered to St. Croix from either
St. Thomas or St. John. The best option is to fly from St. Thomas
round trip on www.seaborneairlines.co. The island is only 22.7
miles long and 8 miles at its widest point, but the landscape is
surprisingly diverse. The two main towns are Christiansted, renowned
for its historic yellow buildings, architecture, cobbled
streets and history, and Frederiksted, the smaller of the two. You
could see all that St. Croix has to offer in a day trip or you could
stay a few days and relax on their gorgeous beaches, play a game
of golf, indulge in some glorious water sports or try your luck at
the casino! For further information on the ‘Unbelievable Virgin
Islands’ check out www.vinow.com and gather all the knowledge
you need on where to stay, where to eat and what to do.
WATER TREATMENT PLANT PROJECT UPDATE
Our new water treatment plant will ensure a state-of-the-art
water treatment process, advance the City’s monitoring and control
systems, and improve water pressure. I am pleased to report
that the project planning phases are in motion. Five design-build
teams submitted proposals. The selection committee has shortlisted
the top three ranked firms to participate in interviews for
final selection. Once those interviews are complete, the highestranked
firm will be presented to the City Commission for consideration
and approval to proceed with contract terms/scope negotiation.
If approval is granted, the draft contract is expected to be
placed on a city commission agenda in January 2024.

Here’s what some of Leadership Delray Class of 2023 have to say: “I
thought I knew everything there was to know about Delray Beach and
Palm Beach County. That was before joining Leadership Delray, which
and professionally. This journey has proved to be beneficial and
rewarding in many ways. I am proud to have established a strong support
system, gained valuable insights, and built meaningful relationships.
I am both humbled and grateful to have gained a deeper understanding
Virginia and Harvey Kimmel
REGULARS | CITY PEOPLE
If you met Harvey and Virginia Kimmel, you would
think they were like most retirees living in Palm
Beach County. They enjoy traveling, spending
time with friends and attending cultural events.
But, that is where the great divide is dispelled.
When not doing earthly ventures or watching
Virginia make jewelry or cook a gourmet meal,
there is a lot to be said.
Others do most of the talking about the Kimmels. It
is not, however, the standard banter of gossip or scandal,
it is the truest form of humanity – one of philanthropy
and honor.
When you meet the Kimmels you learn that philanthropy
to them is not merely the act of writing a check.
Anyone can do that, if provided the means. On the
contrary, the Kimmels have made helping others their
main crusade.
They started doing this 30 years ago in Philadelphia
and Michigan and have continued their philanthropic
prowess in Palm Beach County. It is in Delray that they
have spread their philanthropic wings to include cultural,
educational and leadership programs for children
and teens.
Like many retirees who put down stakes in Delray
Beach, the Kimmels fell in love with the little town that
could. They adore the cultural aspects of Delray, and
the quaint small- town vibe that includes big town
thinkers and creators.
The reason for their generosity (to give grants and
funds to over 30 different non-profits and colleges) is
compassion and life experiences.
Virginia’s father passed away when she was three
years old and was raised (with four other siblings) by
her mother Anna. She couldn’t do many of the things
her classmates were doing because there weren’t
funds to support it. Instead of piano lessons, Virginia
took voice lessons. “I didn’t need a piano this way,” said
Virginia, who was raised in Chicago and has a creative
side that rivals Martha Stewart.
Harvey, who grew up in Philadelphia, came from
humble beginnings as well. He had to work his way
through college and missed out on cultural events or
classes for financial reasons.
But all that is behind them. What is left is the indelible
mark of two people who have realized that to give
is better than to receive. “Non-profits are our love. It is
what our life is about,” said Harvey, who is the yin to
Virginia’s yang.
Their daughter Sara sums up the patriarch of the
Giving As An Art Form
family this way, “My father is such a friendly guy my
friends call him the mayor. When he walks into a room
he knows half the people and within minutes he knows
the other half.”
Sara is now walking in the footsteps of her parents.
The former Harvard psychologist is now doing nonprofit
work in Boston and is taking on some of the Kimmel
Family Fund responsibilities.
Though her parents say she is taking over the Fund,
Sara is a little more circumspect than her parents. “I
have taken over general operation of the Virginia and
Harvey Kimmel Family Fund, but my parents are still
very involved and passionate about giving.”
Sara is correct. The different community opportunities
that open up for those with golden hearts (and the
means to heal and support growth) continue to grow
in Palm Beach County.
And, if you know the Kimmel’s, you know they don’t
talk as much as they do. Their intentions reverberate
around Palm Beach County like hummingbirds on
rechargeable batteries. They have meetings with potential
leaders of causes that range from helping children
of police officers to starting cultural and musical
programs for underserved children. They also support
the police department and gave a grant to hire a social
worker to help those without homes and at-risk.
To create a globe of their giving, one would have to
expand the realm of possibilities to its infinite form.
They support the Delray Citizens for Delray Police
Scholarship program for children of officers in the Delray
Police Department. The co-founder, Perry DonFrancisco
has an aerial view of the Kimmel’s selfless giving.
“The Kimmels are first ballot Hall of Famers in the
Delray Beach Philanthropy Hall of Fame. They make a
tremendous impact on the quality of life for many diverse
groups. Their remarkable proactive generosity is
a gift that benefits all residents of Delray Beach.”
You bet they do. They started the Kimmel Leadership
Academy at Palm Beach State College in Boca. The
program has been an amazing success. It has changed
students’ lives and garnered them a sense of place
within the world, themselves, and their peers.
But the giving doesn’t stop there. At the Milagro
Center they created the Virginia and Harvey Kimmel
Milagro Junior Teen Center. This provides funding for
the center’s musical instruction program, We Read to Succeed program,
and the Rising Stars Scholarship Fund.
The Arts Garage has also benefited from the Kimmel’s generosity.
They support their summer theatre camp for children where they
learn and perform theater and dance. The CEO, Marjorie Waldo, is
also in awe of the Kimmel legacy.
“The Kimmels are so incredibly passionate about their community,
the arts, young people, education and much more. Because of their
generosity and dedication to providing access to the Arts to all people,
Arts Garage has been able to serve nearly 150 children and teenagers.
They believed in Arts Garage, and in me, in the midst of our turnaround.
Their support has been unwavering.”
The Kimmels also support The Symphonia’s after-school program,
“Strings and Self Esteem,” which provides music lessons to children
who have never seen or played musical instruments.
The Kimmel’s generosity is overflowing and strategic, yet magical.
They support programs at the CityHouse, Delray Beach Public Library,
Delray Beach Police Community Outreach Team, Eat Better Live Better,
EJS Project, Roots and Wings, Sandoway Discovery Center, Saint
Matthew’s Episcopal Church, CROS Ministries, Community Greening,
Delray Beach Initiative to End Homelessness and more.
The Kimmels love of life and its centrifugal force has been the
underpinning of their graciousness. Both Harvey and Virginia are
passionate about the arts and want others to be exposed to its
ethereal wonder. Virginia is a culinary wizard and avid gardener
so it makes sense they would add culinary arts to their SouthTech
Arts Academy.
Though the Kimmels are revered in the community for their selfless
giving, they don’t shine a spotlight on themselves. Instead, they
see the true heroes as those who work in the non-profits. Last month
they hosted a party to celebrate and honor them.
“We wanted to pay tribute to the people who work at the non-profits.
They are the ones who deserve the applause. We wanted a night
where they could enjoy a show, great food and a celebration. They are
the stars in our mind,” said Sara.
The Kimmel’s are also stars in a constellation made up of good
people doing great things for others. They support future leaders, seniors,
children and friends looking for a hand to lean on, if only until
they can walk on their own. They want to share what life has to offer –
because they too have known the great chasm of haves and have nots.
“Working with these non-profits feels fabulous. The results are why
we do it. Giving is what life is all about,” said Harvey.
IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE
Authentic Italian Cuisine In The Heart Of Delray
If you ask Emma where she likes
to eat in Delray she will rattle off
a few names but it’s Il Contadino
that has captured her heart.
94 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
MICHAEL, CHEF-OWNER
SHRIMP & SPRING VEGETABLE PRIMAVERA W HOMEMADE TRICOLOR TAGLIATELLE
Like many of the guests who go there she savors the quiet and
serene atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of Atlantic
Avenue. She also loves the food and authentic Italian vibe
of this Pineapple Grove restaurant.
“We were drawn into IL Contadino by the music and the ambience.
Our experience with Michael, who is the chef-owner was
amazing. The food was great, wine selection was astounding, and it
felt like an authentic New York Italian restaurant.”
The wine selection is something that Michael is proud of. This
brownstone, in the heart of Pineapple Grove, is filled from the ceiling
to the baseboards with wine from across the globe.
“I have over 1000 different wines from all over the world. I even
have vintage wines. We cater parties and welcome groups, families,
and businesses to celebrate special occasions here. I feel good
knowing I can offer them the best wine for any occasion.”
One things for sure, everyone is captivated by the personal attention
that Michael gives his guests. Though there is a menu, Michael
enjoys creating everyone’s favorite meal with elan.
Though presentation is important to this foodie, his primary
goal is to create comfort food that makes guests feel good. He also
buys fresh food daily, but only gets what is in season and available
fresh from the market.
“I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my
restaurant. I also take pride in the fact that I offer my customers
their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.”
He sure does. His customers are vocal about Michael’s generosity
of spirit and perfection in the kitchen. “All the food I make comes
COPYRIGHTED

TRIPPA
from my heart. Each dish is homemade, and I can make any type of
food you want from any country.”
The reason is simply that Michael has been cooking since he
could tie his shoelaces. As a child his parents worked a lot and he
often got home hungry and tired. That is why Michael developed
his culinary gift early in life.
“My parents were hairdressers and rarely cooked so I would take
whatever was in the kitchen and prepare a gourmet meal. I could
barely reach the stove, but when they came home there was a complete
meal on the table,” said the father of two.
One of his all-time favorite dishes to prepare for guests is the
Homemade Lasagna topped with a short rib meatball sprinkled
with parmesan cheese. His other popular dish is the Homemade
tri-color tagliatelle pasta in a light garlic sauce with roasted mixed
vegetables and shrimp.
If you ask Peter G. he will tell you there are other things on the
menu to celebrate as well.
“This was the Best Italian food I have had since I was in Italy! The
restaurant is intimate, unassuming, and it blew us away. We had
pasta Vincenzo, chicken parm, chicken Marsala, penne vodka with
chicken and shrimp pasta. My family devoured it all. The bacon
Caesar salad and eggplant stack appetizers all great too.”
Because Michel likes to entertain his guests (and revels in the
delight of cooking for others), he brought back a tradition that added
class and taste to certain dishes. He will flambé a dish at the
table. If you opt for homemade Penne alla Vodka it’s freshly cooked
at your table with butter, cream, marinara sauce and onions and
torched with a flame so it’s piping hot and flavorful.
If seafood is on your wish list try their newest dish from the sea,
the fresh Branzini with spinach and a crab cake in a lemon wine
sauce. The uniqueness of this home style restaurant is that you can
get what you crave, or you can leave the cooking (and creating) to
Michael.
Elyse found this out right away. “We had a fabulous meal here
last night. We sat at an outdoor table and enjoyed an appetizer of
mussels and Lobster Ravioli that were both delicious. We also loved
their homemade garlic bread. Michael was warm and friendly. We
sat a block away from the Swing Jazz Festival and we could hear
the music while dining and people watching. It was a great experience!”
Il Contadino also serves lunch with dishes such as Italian antipasti,
soups, wraps, salads, veal and pasta.
You can also have an event catered in the restaurant (or at another
location). IL Contadino is also available for weddings and parties
and can be rented out for any occasion. The old- world charm of
BRANZINO W SEAFOOD CRAB CAKE
this space makes it conducive for intimacy and social engagement.
At weekends IL Contadino may surprise you with live music to
make your culinary experience authentic and romantic.
Entertainer Frank Bruno might show up with his keyboard and
guitar and serenade you under the Florida foliage. This legendary
musician has played around the world for celebrities (and worldclass
venues) and brings his beautiful tunes to your table with
grace and dexterity.
“My mission is to make you feel at home at my restaurant, I am
proud of the homemade food we serve and happy with our signature
meatball dish. Come enjoy yourself and celebrate life. Our
motto is to please everyone who comes here.”
DINING | THANKSGIVING
BY YVETTE ROULETTE
Thanksgiving is one of my
favorite holidays of the year.
It encompasses for most,
three All American “Fs”: Food,
Football, and Family. Some
Thanksgiving dinners are fancy
and elaborate, with recipes
straight out of Bon Appétit,
while others are more simple
and basic with family recipes
that have been passed down
through generations. This
Thanksgiving I will share some
of my favorite, crowd pleasing,
fool proof, traditional recipes.
96 | NOVEMBER 2023 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
A Simple
Traditional
Thanksgiving
TENDER JUICY TURKEY
1 15 lb turkey - giblets and neck removed
2 Tbsp each of dried parsley, ground
dried rosemary, rubbed dried sage,
dried thyme leaves
1 Tbsp lemon pepper
1 Tbsp salt
2 Stalks of celery, chopped
1 Orange cut in wedges
1 Onion chopped
1 Carrot chopped
1 14.5 oz Can of chicken broth
1 Bottle of champagne
(or ginger ale, or coke)
*If prepared ahead, marinate the
turkey in the fridge the day before
for even more tender juiciness!
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a turkey roster with long sheets
of foil that will be long enough to
wrap the turkey loosely.
TENDER JUICY TURKEY
2. Stir together the parsley, rosemary,
sage, thyme, lemon pepper
and salt in a small bowl. Rub the
mixture in the cavity of the turkey
and over and under the skin
of the turkey. Stuff the turkey with
the celery, onion, orange, and carrot.
Truss, if desired and place the
turkey in the roasting pan. Pour
the broth and champagne over the
turkey and make sure to get some
champagne in the cavity. Bring the
foil over the top of the turkey and
seal. Keep the foil from touching the
skin of the breast or legs.
3. Bake the turkey for 2 1/2 - 3
hours until juices run clear. Uncover
and continue to bake until skin turns
golden brown (about 30 minutes to
1 hour more). When done, remove
turkey from oven and cover with
aluminum foil - let the turkey rest at
least 15 minutes before carving.
3 to 4 cups chicken broth
1 heaping tablespoon dried sage, crumbled
1 1/2 teaspoons dried leaf thyme, crumbled
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary, chopped
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 eggs, lightly beaten
Heat oven to 375 F. Grease a large, shallow
Are Some Treats Actually
Unhealthy For My Pet?
SEND YOUR QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR OUR PETXPERT TO: PETS@ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
THESE PETS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
Everyone loves their pets and likes to provide them with special
rewards. Part of that process is finding proper treats for your pet.
We see the flashy advertising and packaging that is part of the
product selection. Our hope is no matter which choice of treat we pick;
the goal is for your pet to like them.
However, what is in pet treats? Are they beneficial or are they just
snacks? Why do our pets prefer certain treats over their food?
Pets are similar to humans in trying to satisfy a need by using
foods to balance their body’s requirements. The body is always
searching to balance nutritional needs that are dynamic and always
changing. Like us, pets need a variety of different foods with varying
nutritional profiles. When we give them a treat, they are reacting to
those nutritional needs. It also demonstrates the deficiency in that
same boring bowl of food that is repeated over and over. Pets know
what they need instinctively.
Beware that many commercial treats are not designed for their nutritional
value but for the profit generated. Let’s face it, in nature, all
foods are regarded as a treat. . In the wild, canines and felines such as
wolves and panthers often hunt specific prey to not only satisfy their
appetites but also to instinctively fulfill their nutritional needs.
Many conventional pet treats are filled with addictive and inappropriate
ingredients; however, the treat is still a change from that boring
inappropriate commercial food that many pets are still being fed. In
addition to the already inappropriate ingredients in their main diet,
these treats add to a plethora of synthetic chemical flavors and preservatives
to make the product another convenience for the pet parent. As
a result, most commercial treats contribute to an unhealthy condition.
Most are carbohydrate based such as cookies with a meat flavor that
contribute heavily to challenges like obesity, gum and dental problems
and even diabetes. Many of these products are created with specific addictive
compounds to overindulge the appetite and ensure repeat sales.
Our philosophy is that treats can be used as nutritional supplements
and as rewards in training and behavioral conditions. To
achieve this, they must be species specific in achieving healthier pets.
For dogs and cats, that means animal-based products like meat, poultry,
fish, seafood and even eggs. While most of us will not fill our treat
pouch with fresh meats, technology has brought us dehydration. All
natural, dri-baked foods provide a plethora of nutritious treats that
are easy for pet parents to handle.
Another interesting point is when you have a pet that has a heart or
liver issue...in Eastern medicine you treat the illness like for like. For
example, a pet with liver issues will benefit with more liver in their diet.
Many do not want to handle raw liver and its’ possible side effects of
loose stool. The dehydrated liver will have the same benefits. The reason
behind this is the nutritional profile of the food is exactly what the
body needs to heal that part.
High quality species appropriate treats are an excellent addition to
any dietary plan.
Remember research, reading ingredient labels and knowing the prey
and environmental sources the foods come from are important. Common
sense will then kick in on enabling you to keep your pet healthy.
