FROM THE
EDITOR
WE HAVE NOW OPENED THE
DOOR AND WALKED INTO
TWENTY – TWENTY – FOUR!!
This is the start of a new year, and with that usually comes New
Year’s resolutions, so let’s begin with a Positive attitude that
will bring endless potential, possibilities, and progress.
A positive attitude could be all you need to help kick-start
a new career or fitness regime, try a new hobby, join a class, learn a new
skill, or plan for that long-awaited vacation. It doesn’t matter what this new
year brings for you; if you head into any situation with a Positive attitude,
the results will be better!
“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking.” — Zig Ziglar
LISA MIZEN, EDITOR
So now that all the hustle and bustle of the holidays has passed, it’s time to settle back into our routines. However,
the daily norm can be seasoned with some fun times when you live in beautiful South Florida. Here in Delray Beach
and surrounding areas some cool stuff is happening this January. Disenchanted, the fun-loving and definitely-not-forthe-kiddies
musical will be presented again by Marcie Gorman and MNM Theatre Company at The Studio at Mizner
Park from January 12th through January 21st. Or treat yourself to Boca Stage’s production with the 1960s French farce
Boeing Boeing. Running from January 18th – 27th at the Delray Beach Playhouse.
Alternatively, you could hit the Green Market or Art &
Jazz on the Ave or enjoy a trip to our white sandy beaches
with beautiful weather to warm your skin.
You can read about Max Zengage, whose family has
lived in Delray Beach for half a century! Max’s crowning
achievement is bringing the Concours d’Elegance event to
Delray Beach. This prestigious antique car show has a storied
past and, up until three years ago, was not held in Delray. But
Max had a dream, and when that happens, he focuses all his
energy on turning every no into a yes. Positive thinking!!
See you next month and we can share the love!

Boca Stage to Present Boeing
Boeing January 18 -27 at the
Delray Beach Playhouse
Boca Stage’s second production of the season will be the 1960’s
French farce Boeing Boeing. The production will run from
January 18th – 27th in the Cabaret Theater of the award-winning
theatre company’s new home at the Delray Beach Playhouse.
“After our virtually sold-out run of Wait Until Dark, for our second
show we’re investing in straight comedy,” says Boca Stage
producer and the show’s director, Keith Garsson. “Boeing Boeing
has been re-translated and updated several times since its original
incarnation in 1960. This play’s machinations ride on the ability
of an American in Paris trying to keep all three of his internationally
diverse flight attendant fiancées from discovering each other...
when they all show up at his bachelor pad almost simultaneously.
Tickets for Boeing Boeing range in price from $39 to $69 and are
LOCALS ONLY | DELRAY UNDER $50
BY DARIEN DAVIES
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in January for $50 or less.
CAFFE LUNA ROSA
Happy New Year! While ringing in the New Year with music,
glitter and dancing is a great way to celebrate, if you’re looking
for a relaxing and enlightening way to enjoy the beginning
of the New Year, turn to the beach. There’s just something super
peaceful about watching the first sunrise of 2024, and a great
way to think about what intentions and goals you’d like to set for
yourself for the next 365. January is Celebration of Life Month and
making the effort to connect with yourself and the planet can never
be a bad idea. Neither can walking across the street to Caffe Luna
Rosa for a glass of champagne to toast to the New Year. They open
at 7 a.m. and feature both indoor and outdoor seating, but a spot
at the cozy bar is always a great option. Start with a glass of prosecco
($13), mimosa ($9) or even their fresh watermelon mimosa
($15). If you’re hungry, you absolutely cannot go wrong with their
Fresh Burrata and Avocado Toast, made of toasted challah bread
26 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
topped with fresh burrata spread, sliced avocado, red onions over
a bed of arugula with a side of heirloom tomatoes tossed in red
wine vinegar and balsamic reduction for $21. Now that’s the best
way to start the New Year! Caffe Luna Rosa is located at 34 S. Ocean
Blvd. Please visit www.caffelunarosa.com or call (561) 274-9404
for more information.
WINTER GREENMARKET
Give yourself a big pat on the back because you successfully
lived through another holiday season. While the holidays are
a great way to spend time with loved ones, it’s also a surefire
way to wear yourself a little thin. Between the gifts, parties, EOY
work projects, and traveling, the normal equilibrium of your life
can get skewed. So, this January, which also happens to be Get a Balanced
WELLNESS WEDNESDAY AT THE SQUARE
Hey, self, howaya? If you haven’t checked in with your self
in a while, the time is now. You’ve got a new year to look
forward to and the person who is always going to be there
with you and for you is your Self! January is Self Love Month and
if you need an excuse to pamper yourself and check in on your inner
being, go ahead and schedule yourself for Wellness Wednesday
at The Square. These $5 healing classes include yoga, meditation
and tai chi, and are meant to provide guests with a break in the
middle of the day where they can connect with their community,
quiet their mind and move their body. The schedule rotates, but the
goal is always the same: showing yourself some love. Sure, lunch
is a great mid-day activity, but this event will prove to be the best
food for your soul. Classes are held at the Cornell Art Museum at
Old School Square, 51 N. Swinton Ave., from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration
is required (walk-ups not allowed) and tickets, which are
non-refundable, must be presented at check-in. Please visit www.
downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077 for more information
and to purchase tickets.
LEMONGRASS
If your blood type is ABV+, your skin is lacking its luster, and
you are tripping without the usual pep-in-your-step after all
the holiday festivities, it might be time to show yourself some
chicken-soup-for-the-tired-soul love. After all, there are almost as
many benefits of soups as there are soups out there. So grab yourself
a steaming bowl and cleanse the body one spoonful at a time.
The best soups to achieve this goal are packed with ginger, lemongrass,
a hearty broth and loads of spices. A great place to start
is at Lemongrass where you can enjoy their Tom Kha Soup. This
spicy, coconut-base soup with lemongrass, mushrooms and scallions
for $8.95 has the right amount of spice to bring your body
to life. Or, Ramen 369 and their Miso Ramen will have you feeling
fine in no time, thanks to all the benefits of miso. The bowl comes
with chicken broth and miso with chashu, wood ear mushrooms,
bamboo shoots and scallions for $18. Ziree’s soups also pack a bold
punch of flavor and recuperative efforts, especially with their Tom
Yum Ta-Lay. This Thai-style hot and sour lemongrass soup comes
with shrimp, scallops, squid, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and
a touch of lime juice for $7.95. Sweaty forehead, yes. Comforting
stomach, also yes. Please visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or
call (561)243-1077 for specific restaurant information.
JANUARY 4TH (NETFLIX)
► Society of Snow
In 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered
to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only
29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the
most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have
to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. Society of the Snow, also
known as La Sociedad de la Nieve in Spanish, is directed by acclaimed
Spanish producer / filmmaker J.A. Bayona, director of the films The
Orphanage, The Impossible, A Monster Calls, and Jurassic World.
JANUARY 5TH
follows her home from their high school reunion. Their surprise
encounter will profoundly impact both of them as they open the door
to the past. Memory is both written and directed by acclaimed Mexican
filmmaker Michel Franco. This first premiered at the 2023 Venice Film
Festival this fall, where Sarsgaard won the Best Actor prize.
► Night Swim
Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst & Bryce
McGuire, Wyatt Russell stars as Ray Waller, a former major league
baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness,
who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar
nominee Kerry Condon), teen daughter Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle) and
young son Elliot (Gavin Warren). Secretly hoping, against the odds, to
return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering
backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical
therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a
malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of
inescapable terror. Night Swim is written & directed by up-and-coming
filmmaker Bryce McGuire.
Phylicia Rashad and Jeremy Irons.
► The Book of Clarence
From visionary filmmaker Jeymes Samuel (who made the western
The Harder They Fall), The Book of Clarence is a bold new take
on the timeless Biblical-era epic. Streetwise but down-on-his-luck,
Clarence (LaKeith Stanfield) is struggling to find a better life for his
family, while fighting to free himself of debt. Captivated by the power
and glory of the rising Messiah and His apostles, he risks everything
to carve his own path to a divine life, and ultimately discovers that the
redemptive power of belief may be his only way out. The film features
new music made by Jeymes Samuel, JAY-Z, and more. The Book of
Clarence is both written and directed by acclaimed British songwriter
/ filmmaker Jeymes Samuel, director of the films They Die by Dawn
and The Harder They Fall, plus Jay Z’s “Jay-Z: Legacy” short film /
music video. With a full cast including Omar Sy, Anna Diop, RJ Cyler,
David Oyelowo, Micheal Ward, Alfre Woodard, Teyana Taylor, Caleb
McLaughlin, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, with James
McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch.
► Mean Girls
From the comedic mind of Tina Fey comes a new twist on the
modern classic, Mean Girls. New student Cady Heron (Angourie
Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite
group of popular girls called “The Plastics,” ruled by the conniving
queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen
(Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the
major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels
(Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs. As
Cady schemes to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of
her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey),
she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most
cutthroat jungle of all: high school. Mean Girls (2024) is co-directed by
the filmmakers Samantha Jayne (“Quarter Life Poetry”) & Arturo Perez
Jr. (also “Quarter Life Poetry”, plus the docs McCartney: Grand Central,
Where Have All the Flowers Gone?).
► I.S.S.
Tensions flare in the near future aboard the International Space
Station as a worldwide conflict breaks out on Earth. Reeling from
this, the astronauts receive orders from the ground: take control
of the station by any means necessary. “I.S.S. is a nail biting thriller
that keeps us on the edge of our seats. Underneath it all though, it’s
really a human story -- a story about the tension between what we’re
called to do versus who we know ourselves to be.” This I.S.S. movie
is directed by the award-winning American producer / filmmaker
Gabriela Cowperthwaite. The excellent cast for this includes Ariana
DeBose, Chris Messina, Pilou Asbaek, John Gallagher Jr., Costa Ronin,
Letters From Linton
(DELRAYAUTHOR)
BY CHARLES HOFMAN
Letters from Linton is the story of Adolf
and Anna Hofman, who arrived in Delray
Beach in 1895 and made it their home.
Originally called Linton, Delray Beach
(and South Florida) was a primitive frontier
filled with rattlesnakes and covered
with scrub brush and palmettos.
The story of the Hofman legacy is told
beautifully through letters sent to their
families from 1895 to 1928. The letters
narrate the planting of pineapple fields, the
excitement of hunting for turtle eggs, and
the fervent real estate sales in the 1920s.
Adolf and Anna captured the bleak beauty
of the Delray landscape while revealing
their strong spirit to triumph over the
harsh realities of pioneer life.
Letters from Linton is illustrated with
photographs from the Hofman family album
and the Delray Beach Historical Society.
The author combines historical research,
the Hofman letters, and memoirs
of early settlers to create an authentic account
of frontier Linton and Delray Beach.
The Author, Charles Hofman is the
grandson of Adolf and Anna Hofman. He
grew up listening to their colorful tales of
adventure and hardship in Delray. He and
Nine Months: The
Story of Wilbur
(DELRAY AUTHOR)
BY TANIA TOMYN
Nine Months: The Story of Wilbur is
a small but powerful book by local
author, Tania Tomyn. The book is an honest
portrayal of a couple who so lovingly
wants to have a child, yet despite everything
they do, have not conceived.
So, they adopt. Not a child, but a rescue
dog named Wilbur. Poor Wilbur has so many
ailments that Tania and husband Aaron find
themselves tending to a dog who they love
yet requires a lot of medical treatments.
Perhaps this is a metaphor for loving
selflessly. What is so compelling about
this book – that is measured in months – is
that love is always the anchor for life and
for Wilbur’s trials and tribulations.
Nine Months is the time that the author
had to spend with Wilbur. The bond they
share is undeniably strong and the challenges
they face are the centerpiece for the family.
The book takes you through the emotions
of each month and are shared generously.
It is a heartfelt wish that everything
have a happy ending. And, despite Wilbur’s
outcome, there is love to go around.
That love becomes the centerpiece for
their lives going forward.
Tania and Aaron decide to adopt more
rescue pups and create a happy family of
canines. It’s a beautiful display of dharma
in its ultimate form. You can’t help loving
Tania and Aaron for their tender care of
poor Wilbur, who teaches them that love
takes on many different forms.
The Heaven & Earth
Grocery Store
(2023 B&N BOOK OF THE YEAR)
BY JAMES MCBRIDE
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown,
Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations
for a new development, the last thing
they expected to find was a skeleton at the
bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and
how it got there were two of the long-held
secrets kept by the residents of Chicken
Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where
immigrant Jews and African Americans
lived side by side and shared ambitions and
sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe
and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated
his theater and where Chona ran
the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When
the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize
him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at
Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black
community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep
the boy safe.
As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes
clear how much the people who live on the margins
of white, Christian America struggle and what they must
do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about
what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s
white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that
even in dark times, it is love and community—heaven and
earth—that sustain us.
Financial Feminist:
Overcome the Patriarchy’s
Bullsh*t to Master Your
Money and Build a Life You
Love
BY TORI DUNLAP
Tori Dunlap was always good with money. As a kid, she
watched her prudent parents balance their checkbook
every month and learned to save for musical tickets
by gathering pennies in an Altoids tin. But she quickly
discovered that her experience with money was pretty
unusual, especially among her female friends.
It wasn’t our fault. Investigating this financial literacy
and wealth gap, Tori found that girls are significantly less
likely to receive a holistic financial education; we’re taught
to restrain our spending, while boys are taught about investing
and rewarded for pursuing wealth. In adulthood,
women are hounded by the unfounded stereotype of the
frivolous spenders whose lattes are to blame for the wealth
gap. And when something like, say, a global pandemic happens,
we’re the first to have jobs cut and the last to re-enter
the workforce. It’s no wonder money is a source of anxiety
and a barrier to equality for so many of us.
But what if money didn’t mean restriction, and instead,
choice? The ability to luxuriously travel, quit toxic jobs,
donate to important organizations, retire early? The freedom
to live the life you want, and change the world while
you do it?
Tori founded Her First $100K to teach women to overcome
the unique obstacles standing in the way of their
financial freedom. In Financial Feminist, she distills the
principles of her shame- and judgment-free approach
to paying off debt, figuring out your value categories to
spend mindfully, saving money without monk-like deprivation,
and investing in order to spend your retirement
tanning in Tulum.
Beyond Words
Storytelling Competition
Connection is at the heart of all that we do at
HERD Foundation. It is at the core of all our
relationships and how we interact — with our
team, our community, our clients, and our horses.
Established in 2018 by co-founders
Rhonda Fritzshall and Nongae Johnson,
HERD Foundation is a nonprofit
organization that provides equineassisted
services to military veterans and
their families.
Consistent with our mission, our experiential
Equine-Assisted programs are designed
to empower individuals to achieve personal
growth through exploring the unique relationship
between humans and horses.
HERD Foundation launched our programs
as a proactive response to the growing
need for services that promote social and
emotional well-being among the military
veteran population of Palm Beach County.
Our voluntary programs are free to veterans
since HERD is funded by grants, fundraisers,
donations, and community partnerships.
When we are working with veterans,
rather than focusing on a diagnosis, labels,
or past experiences, our primary focus is
offering a safe space where participants
can explore the connection in the present
and experience a sense of belonging.
All equine-assisted sessions at HERD
Foundation are conducted on the ground
with the horses at liberty, meaning they
can move freely and choose how and when
to interact. This method is particularly
52 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
powerful because a natural shift in the
relationship dynamic between horse and
participant occurs — moving from a relationship
that puts human above horse to
one that is based on mutual respect, clear
communication, and trust.
Veterans are provided the opportunity
to learn the principles and skills necessary
to foster a meaningful connection with our
equine partners. Veterans can also develop
additional skills to build healthy, attuned
relationships with themselves and others.
Connecting with the horses enables the
veteran to embody the learned principles
and skills so that they may be transferred
to other relationships and situations in
their lives once they step out of the arena.
One of the most invaluable aspects of
HERD Foundation is that we are a long-term
resource for our veterans. HERD encourages
participants to stay engaged for as long as
they choose. This is made possible through
our Fall In Friday program, which offers the
much-needed continuity of support services
often lacking for local veterans. Fall In Friday
has run continuously for over two years
and provides the opportunity for veterans
to expand upon their horsemanship skills
and to continue to build the relationships
they have formed with the horses and other
veterans in the program.
We strive to ensure that each veteran
who participates in one of our programs
knows that HERD Foundation will always
be a place where they can feel safe, be seen
and heard, and always belong. Though
each of our veteran participants enters our
gates as an individual, our deepest hope is
that they leave knowing they are part of
our HERD— In a word, connection.
HEALTH & BEAUTY | PAIN RELIEF
BY DR. SAFRANSKI
Arthritis and Chiropractic
Arthritis, we have all heard of it, and it affects
some if not most of us. Arthritis has many
forms and conditions, but for the purpose of
this article we will discuss osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis or OA is defined as the degeneration of joint
cartilage and the underlying bone, most common from middle
age and onward in life. This can happen in any joint, but
here we will specifically address OA of the spine.
Quick anatomy lesson, humans have 7 cervical, 12 thoracic, and
5 lumbar vertebrae, and in between each one of those vertebrae is
a disc. That disc has two parts. The inside is a gelatinous material
called the nucleus pulposus and the outside portion of the disc call
the annulus fibrosis. The annular is a strong durable material that
bonds to the top and bottom of the vertebrae. These discs act as
the shock absorbers of the spine. Just like in your car, these wear
out after lots of miles or improper use. Improper use can occur due
to poor biomechanics, poor posture, overuse, or even injury. The
discs are a very viscous material and need movement to get their
nutrition and hydration. If the spine is injured, or biomechanics are
altered, the discs are not getting their proper nutrients and hydration,
so they dehydrate or degenerate. When this happens, you have
degenerative disc disease. It’s not actually a disease, but rather a
condition. However, when the disc is degenerated and dehydrated,
the body views that as unstable and locks down the muscles around
the joints, and protects the spine by laying down more bone, resulting
in osteoarthritis.
There are other concerns in this process as well. During the degeneration
process, the likelihood of developing disc herniations
are increased, as well as an increase in symptoms such as sciatica.
How can this be treated? First and foremost, MOVEMENT is the key
to life. Stretching, exercising, going on walks, getting out and experiencing
this beautiful country of ours, is going to help keep those
joints lubricated.
For the spine, getting adjusted is going to introduce motion to the
joints that are stuck in the protective mechanism we talked about
earlier. It is also going to help rehydrate the discs over time. For
disc herniations, non-surgical spinal decompression is the most
aggressive conservative treatment that can be done to help with
herniations and sciatica. Coupling spinal decompression with Class
IV laser therapy to bring more healing properties into the joints has
proven to have great results. In the end, if you are suspecting that
you have arthritis do not just sit around, get up and MOVE!
BY ASHLEY SICA
Jumpin’ Into The New Year!
The holidays are over and you’re ready to de-fluff and jump back on the
fitness wagon. Like most, you have most likely set some fitness related
New Year Resolution. Here are some tips to make sure these resolutions
are attainable and will work for you. It is all about having goals and plan!
A healthier version of you is just a couple steps away!
1. MAKE REALISTIC RESOLUTIONS
Don’t set yourself up for failure before you begin!
Set goals that are attainable and realistic. The
more accomplished you feel the more likely you
are to stay motivated and pushing toward your
goals. A resolution shouldn’t be a fantasy. If
you’ve never lifted weights, attempting to do
so 7 days per week is probably setting yourself
up for disappointment. For most people,
breaking or setting new habits doesn’t happen
overnight. The key to sustainable resolutions
is to make small changes gradually. If your
goal is to go from never running to finishing
a half-marathon, start training gradually.
Begin by walking a few miles twice a week,
and steadily increase the workload to jogging,
and then running over several months.
Just keep the word “realistic” in your mind and
you’ll be off to a good start!
2. GET SPECIFIC WITH YOUR GOALS
Resolutions should be both specific and measurable.
Writing down your goals is not only a great way
to accomplish them, but your list can also help you
figure out the exact steps needed to get where you
want to go. “I want to lose weight” is a pretty common
New Year resolution, but how exactly do you
go from point A to point B? Instead, try setting a
more specific goal. For instance: “I want to lose 10
pounds over the next 6 weeks by eliminating fast
food meals and going to the gym 3 to 4 times per
week. I’ll then maintain my goal weight for 6 months
before setting any other new goals.” The more specific
your goal the better your results will be. The vaguer your
goals are the harder it will be to attain them.
3. SET NON-SUPERFICIAL GOALS
Looking good in a swimsuit is always a good goal but superficial
goals usually lose their appeal after endless weeks
of diet and exercise. Instead, try picking a goal related to
health and happiness. For example, regular exercise has
awesome benefits such as lowering cholesterol, boosting overall
energy, and even increasing happiness and decreasing
depression. Bringing some deeper intentions to
your workout can make all the difference in sticking
to your goals. Looking good in a swimsuit should
come secondary to your main goal.
4. BUDDY UP
Find a friend or someone with likeminded
goals to keep and hold you accountable. Accountability
is huge! You are much more likely
to stay on track when you have someone
to answer to besides yourself. A buddy
should also serve to help motivate and
keep things real. They should have no
problem telling you to put that French
fry down and get your booty to the
gym when you’re lacking your own
motivation. If your buddy isn’t doing
their job, fire them and find a new one!
There is always someone looking to become
healthy and fit.
5. REEVALUATE
RESOLUTIONS OFTEN
How many people resolve to finish a
marathon, only to realize they dislike distance
running? Or decide to take up yoga
and realize they want something fasterpaced?
A lot of things seem fun from a
distance but might not be a good fit. If this
happens to you, switch gears and pick a different
resolution. Don’t be afraid to switch it
up if it isn’t working. You’re much more likely
to stick with something that you truly enjoy.
VINCE SPADEA
INTERVIEWED AND WRITTEN BY EMILY PETERS | PHOTO BY HENRIIKKA NIEMI
Granting his first personal interview in years,
perpetually well-polished Vince Spadea reveals what it
was really like playing tennis at an Olympic level, and
how he has become just as successful off the court.
The epitome of tenacity, Spadea has
more than proven himself as a firstrate
Renaissance man, conquering
endeavors that have spanned the globe.
Parlaying a formidable tennis career into
bi-coastal successes as an author, business
owner, and luxury real estate agent,
the sports phenom has become one of the
top Realtors in South Florida, currently
operating under Douglass Elliman - a
company synonymous with some of the
most high-end properties in the world. In
2006, ECW Press published the best-selling
memoir Break Point: The Secret Diary
of a Pro Tennis Player, which details the
ultra-competitive world of professional
tennis, along with previously private anecdotes
- including his friendship with
comedian Jon Lovitz. In the public eye for
the majority of his life, Spadea recounts
how at eight-years-old, he relocated from
his native Chicago to South Florida, whose
sunny atmosphere leant a hand in determining
his future.
“Florida is an amazing place for tennis
because you simply can’t beat the weather
here. My dad was a part-time player
and enthusiast, so he used to bring my
sisters out with me and we would all play
against each other. I attended a few training
programs including the Chris Evert
Academy, and as tennis grew in the 80’s
and 90’s, so did my game. That time period
was absolutely pivotal in facilitating
my career in the juniors, and around 14 was when I really began
to exhibit a higher standard of skill. Consequently, agents and
people in the tennis associations started coming around saying
they wanted to talk to me about being more serious. I was actually
playing baseball at the time, and ironically Coco Gauff’s
(winner of the 2023 Women’s singles U.S.
Open) dad was actually on my team in Delray.
I was really into baseball too, but I started
winning a lot of national events in tennis,
so that outweighed baseball and changed my
priorities. When I was 16, and a sophomore
at St. Andrews in Boca Raton, I turned all
my attention towards the game and became
enamored with professional athleticism itself.
Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras were
definitely inspirations… and that era athlete
didn’t go the college route. I aspired to
be like them, so I concentrated all my extra
hours and energy on tennis and going pro.”
His dream fulfilled, Spadea remained on
the pro tennis circuit for 18 years, reaching
the quarterfinals at the 1999 Australian
Open, and attained a career-high ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) ranking of
18th in the world in 2005.
“Upon reaching pro status, I think you
without a doubt strive to become the best
you can. As I progressed, the want to keep
going intensified - and once the media recognition
came… truly realized how substantially
I was climbing. So I reset my goals, and
upon reaching the top 25, it all began to feel a little bit surreal
because you don’t think of yourself as being one of the best players
out there. I worked really hard, and seeing my ranking break
the top 20 was one of the biggest moments in my tennis career.
There were some really great American players on the circuit
like Jim Courier and Michael Chang. Getting to watch guys that
were only a few years older than me winning majors was really
inspiring, and those were the kind of guys I wanted to emulate
and compete against. I wound up beating them all at some point
eventually in the future, and although I didn’t get to win a major
tournament like they did, had some great times accomplishing
a lot against that caliber of player. I was honored to represent
the United States twice at the Summer Olympics - once in 2000,
held in Sydney, Australia and again in 2004 in Athens, Greece.
The entire experience was pretty amazing and such a timeless
achievement. There’s so much prestige and attention that is given
to every athlete when you get there. From the amazing equipment,
warm-up suits and rings, to the incredible memorabilia
- you realize how important it is. To want to be an Olympic athlete
is a great goal, but to actually be there while participating
in the opening ceremonies, and see the competitors who have
dedicated years of their lives - combined with every victory and
failure… it culminates to that moment where you’re playing for
your country, surrounded by the most talented and impressive
class of peers, and to be one of them is really special.”
I worked
really hard,
and seeing
my ranking
break the top
20 was one
of the biggest
moments in my
tennis career
COPYRIGHTED
That “go for the gold” mindset continued as Spadea ventured
into real estate, garnering the Platinum Ellie Award in 2020 and
2023, and the 2022 Leading Edge Ellie Award. With stellar progression,
selling over $150 million in Palm Beach homes over
the span of only a few years, Vince has authenticated why he is
on track for one of the most rapid rises in
history as a new agent.
“I got into real estate because I was starting
to look at buying places for myself,
and wanted to get my license for personal
knowledge. I think it’s such a cool field because
it affects everyone, and thought it
would be great to interact with individuals
on that level. I wound up getting my license
while spending a good amount of time in
Palm Beach as the touring professional at
Mar-a-Lago. I met a lot of fascinating people
there, and began to realize the bigger picture
for myself. I lived in Los Angeles before
Florida, because that’s where one of my
coaches was in 2003. Ten years later, when
I fully retired, I was working as a manager
and agent - but more in the Hollywood aspect,
which allowed for top-notch practice
in negotiations. Usually after you become a
professional athlete, it’s natural to want to
mentor people and help out… and I desired
to do that as well, but in a different sector. In
Los Angeles, that’s the entertainment sector,
and so that environment helped me develop
my own identity and brand.”
Spadea’s talents have spilled onto the silver screen as the onset
expert and body double for Steve Carell in Battle of the Sexes,
TSG Entertainment’s 2017 film detailing the historic match between
Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs.
“I helped Emma (Stone), Steve (Carell), and the actors learn
tennis at a magnitude which was needed for that movie. The entire
cast was really nice, and everyone put forth great effort in
perfecting their game to create the realism of what you see in
the final product. Another project, Nightbird, (directed by Lawrence
Fajardo), came about because of someone that I had met
in the same industry. They were doing an independent film in
New York, and asked me to play a part in a mafia movie which
sounded really interesting and I had a great time doing it.”
Whether it’s having the distinction of being one of only four
players to ever defeat Roger Federer 6-0 in a set at a major
event, running his Beverly-Hills based talent management company,
6 Star Ventures, or selling some of the most magnificent
homes in America, Spadea makes it all look easy - even though
it certainly is not.
“It’s always more enjoyable when you play well or succeed in
your chosen pursuits, so I try to focus and achieve big things in
everything I do.”
THE SEAGATE GOLF CLUB
A New Updated Golf Course
to Meet the New Age of Golfing
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE SEAGATE COUNTRY CLUB
The best things in life don’t change much,
but they do need updating from time to time.
The Seagate Golf Club - which has always endorsed elegance
and good taste - knew that.
That’s why the Seagate Golf Club recently finished a major
renovation at their historic golf course with design excellence
and deluxe patronage.
60 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
Known for being one of the best championship golf courses in
Palm Beach County, they reopened last month. The 18-hole Seagate
Golf course, known for its legendary designer Joe Lee, enters a new
phase of creation by renowned golf course architect Drew Rogers.
The new golf course enhances the game and allows players to
experience new challenges within the scope of the game.
One thing for sure, the 18-hole championship course continues
to wow golfers and guests with its 300-acre Bimini Bermuda grass
and tree-lined fairways. They also kept to their original heritage
with an impressive practice facility, driving range, pitching and
bunker areas, and staff of PGA professionals.
The updated golf course has sparked newness in all areas, from
the obvious to the discerning player’s advantage. The changes affect
the greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage, turfgrasses,
landscaping, driving range and practice facilities.
“Recognized as one of the best golf courses in the region, this full
renovation continues to provide our members with the world-class
facilities they’ve come to expect,” said Alex Schnoeller, Managing
Director of The Seagate.
COPYRIGHTED

Seagate Director of Agronomy Alan Fike also sees the golden hue
in their green golfing landscape.
“Our architect carefully analyzed our course and designed the
plans for the full renovation of the entirety of our golf facilities.
Throughout the renovation, I was on the course each day, ensuring
that the myriad of intricate design details was executed according to
plan. We know our members will be very pleased with the results.”
The changes are mighty but strategically placed for maximum
challenge and an enlightened game. This includes a new Bunker
Strategy, all new greens complexes and a Rock wall bulkhead on
Par 3 at the 15th hole.
“Players will be challenged with the new Seagate Golf Club. The
bunker strategy gives golfers a challenge to play the course very
differently than in the past.”
Part of this new challenge lies in the fact that the fairway bunkers
are more visible from the tee boxes. The green side bunkers are more
strategically placed and new greens are bigger. This gives a change to
the undulations, allowing more challenging hole locations.
They also enhanced the water hazard on the 15th hole that
showcases their new coral rock bulkhead. This upgraded look adds
a challenge when navigating the water.
Originally designed by legendary golf architect Joe Lee, the Bates
Golf Design Group stayed true to the course’s beloved layout, but
modernized and enhanced players’ skills.
The 300-acre course is now stocked with bass ponds, TIF Eagle
greens, and bordered by natural wildlife.
What is golf without a luxe clubhouse, after-game wind down
and social swivel?
The 41,000 square-foot clubhouse has an updated dining room serving
lunch, brunch, and dinner with indoor and outdoor seating. There is
also a Grand Ballroom, Dining Room, Grille Room and Courtyard.
The Clubhouse renovation includes architectural improvement
and upgrades in the lobby, meeting rooms, event spaces, locker
rooms, corridors and the outdoor patio.
The new Clubhouse has a modern serene aesthetic and augments
its historic Delray Beach roots. The architecture includes soft neutrals
and sage green upholstery for a relaxed yet classic touch.
There are leather tufted sofas in intimate seating areas and a new
reception desk with leather burl top. The new brass glowing alabaster
light fixtures and new curated art collection adds an abstract
dimension to its landscape. And, the vintage photos by Slim Aarons
of Palm Beach lend an air of laid back cerebral sophistication.
This new clubhouse renovation adds an elegant nod to Hollywood
glamour with its vintage photos, marble dining tables and
rattan patio furniture.
If golf is your passion, or you want to beef up your game and your
social sphere, the Seagate Golf Club invites you to become a member
of this distinguished club.
The golf course is open to club members and Seagate Hotel
guests. With either you get full access to the golf course, racquet
club, the Fitness Center, Fitness classes, and Golf Club dining venues.
The Racquets Center offers programs for tennis and pickleball
at all levels with courts, clinics and competitions.
Members also get to enjoy exclusive access to The Seagate Beach
Club, Yacht Club and Hotel as a private Club member. Located in the
prime “court” of Delray Beach, Florida, the Seagate name is synonymous
with elegance, luxury and sophistication.
Also, as a golf club member (or hotel guest) you get to indulge
in the largeness and beauty of their luxurious private Ocean front
Beach Club. The lush greenery will seduce your senses, and the
ocean view is beautiful and intoxicating.
You can lounge by the pool, relax oceanside and order a drink
from their full-service bar. There is valet parking, indoor and outdoor
dining (under the stars) with a choice of fresh dishes that rival
the finest restaurants. The Seagate Beach Club is an all- inclusive
floating heaven on earth.
All of this can be yours by joining the Seagate Golf Club, Beach
Club, Yacht Club and Hotel as a private Club member.
The Seagate name is one of the most distinguished in Florida resort
living. Whether it’s golf, sports, fitness, beach activities, a hotel
or restaurants they have all the ingredients that make life a little
sweeter and a lot more profound.
To be active – whether on the golf course or fitness center – is the
passport to heavenly living. The Seagate Golf and Country Club is
well known for its elegance and authenticity. They invite you into
their world. Call about membership today.
WORLD CRYSTAL
A Shop of Wonders to Buy and
Admire Radiant Gemstone Creations
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF WORLD CRYSTAL
World Crystal is a rare jewel in the retail
landscape. There are few stores like this in
the US and even fewer in Palm Beach County.
64 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
The reason is that these high-quality gemstone products are
rarely available in one place. You might find a few in a gift
shop at a tourist attraction, but you won’t find an entire store
dedicated to selling (and showing) these natural radiant products.
The reason that Delray Beach is the center of the gemstone universe
is because Marcelo Neves brought these precious gemstones
(and products made of them) to the US from his native Brazil.
It was not commerce that sparked his deep knowledge and love
of gemstones, it was his birthright.
“I started working in my grandfather’s gemstone business in
Goiás, Brazil when I was five years old. My grandfather collected
gemstones and sold them to shop owners and collectors,” said the
amiable owner of World Crystal.
As legend would have it his grandfather opened a mine in Brazil
and began bringing rare gemstones to be made into gift items, jewelry,
sculptures and healing crystals.
His beloved grandson, Marcelo began wholesaling the gemstones,
but realized their beauty was beyond their inherent goodness.
The result was a retail shop that resembles a museum of crystal
radiance and goodness.
“I wanted to share these unique gemstone treasures with people
who would cherish and enjoy them. I dreamed of coming to the US
and finding a city to open a retail store. It was important for me to
go where gemstones would be appreciated and bring harmony and
happiness to others.”
When he visited Delray Beach, Marcelo felt he had found his oasis
for gemstones. He knew instinctually that the people (and tourists)
in Delray Beach would appreciate the mystical quality and inherent
beauty of these rare gemstones and artifacts.
He was right.
“My shop opened 16 months ago. I am so happy I moved to Delray
Beach to showcase these beautiful and powerful gemstone
home décor items and crystal pieces.”
It is not just locals who have embraced World Crystal. Tourists
from all over the globe have been shopping (and shipping) large
gemstone arches and smaller pieces to their homes overseas.
It’s no surprise that this is happening. The brilliant hues and
COPYRIGHTED

sparkling radiance of each item that surrounds you in World Crystal
has meaning beyond their inherent beauty.
There are five-foot Amethyst crystal towers with purple hues and
others with more neutral tones. Shoppers buy them to adorn their
homes (or offices) and bring good luck or abundance to their lives.
One 9-foot crystal quartz tower weighs 1,500 pounds and stands
stoically beside smaller daintier quartz massagers and cheese cutters.
That is the beauty of this store that beckons you inside with its
pure intention and clear-cut earthly goodness.
Though the eye sees Amethyst as something of rare beauty, it is
also known as one of the most powerful and protective healing
stones. It can be in its natural state, cut into the shape of a small Bonsai
Tree or polished into jewels. A quick aside – if you’re looking for
an anniversary gift – Amethyst is the perfect stone for six years of
marriage. It’s also the birthstone for people born in February.
For those who love the texture and quality of Amethyst and want
to admire its beauty, they have large cut-out gemstones on swivel
stands. There are also gemstone towers with cut-out Amethyst slices
(Geodes) to adorn your hallway or living room.
For those who love gemstones, but don’t see your future wrapped
up in the largeness of this beauty, don’t fret.
World Crystal has a large – and spectacular selection – of smaller
items as well. There are gemstone birds perched atop crystal
bases, miniature horses made of black crystal (Obsidian), modern
tabletop Obsidian pieces in sleek textured shapes, body forms and
historic shapes.
The Dark Obsidian is known for its powerful grounding properties
and its ability to bring clarity and peace.
There are many mystical properties to the crystal figures and Goddesses
on display. Though some are revered as a form of worship,
many people find serenity and power in these gemstone pieces.
There are colorful gemstone statues of Ganesh, Shiva, Parvati and
others. They come in Lepidolite, blue lapis, gold, and other illustrious
gemstones.
If you stop and look at the glass cases that surround you, you will
find dazzling museum-quality gemstone sculptures made in the
shape of hearts, skulls, coasters, boats and more. There are also wonderful
gift items such as gemstone knives, spatulas, bread cutters,
serving pieces and two-tier platters with gold electroplated edging.
One rare piece of artistic wonder is the Yellow Jade hand carved
ships with figurines. Yellow Jade is not only rare, but it represents
good luck and good fortune. The ships are meticulously ornate with
cut-out detail and miniature seafaring detail.
They also have Pyrite gemstones that can sit atop a desk, cabinet
or table. Pyrite is known as “Fools Gold” and is supposed to bring
good financial fortune to those who collect it. It’s also believed to
promote wellness and support the body’s protection.
If you are looking for artwork, they now sell abstract paintings
with crystal reverie and decoration. The colorful paintings have
a gemstone quality with wide brush strokes and tiny gemstone
adornment.
A visit to Crystal World is a treasure hunt to infinity. It’s one part
museum, one part gift shop and a healing balm for the soul. Customers
describe their experience as one of delight as well.
“The store is extremely beautiful, with excellent service and
great energy due to the precious stones. I really love it!!”
The gemstones at World Crystal are from all over the world and
carefully curated and culled from their origin. Josie and Marcelo
(and his daughter Isabella) will answer your questions and delight
in the magical quality of gemstones with you as well.
Come to where life is celebrated, and greatness is abundant. You
will cherish the time you spend there.
ALLYSON SULLIVAN
Delray
Beach
According
to Allyson
Sullivan
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS BY KRYSTAL CAPONE
To Allyson Sullivan the sun sets a little
brighter in Delray Beach. She has not only
lived here for the past 30 years, but she has
been a realtor for 22 of those years.
Allyson has seen it all and heard a lot. “As a realtor in town I
meet many people from out of town and many locals. Some
of them consider me to be a resource for all things Delray
Beach,” said the Delray Beach Lang Realty agent.
Because of this Sullivan wants to share some of her favorite things
about Delray. Some of the them may surprise you – but not to Sullivan.
She tends to look on the bright side – even with sunglasses on.
“I love the small town beach vibe of Delray and many things that
people complain about. I actually love the bridge and never mind
getting stuck in traffic when the bridge is open.”
Sullivan also loves watching the trains go by and the traffic (yes
you heard that right). She also enjoys all the hustle and bustle of
our little beach town.
On the side of land use and real estate, Sullivan’s quest for perfection
also lands squarely on the ground.
“I love that there are so many types of various real estate options
- there is something for everyone. I think Delray has really nailed
the concept of new urbanism.”
What she means is the design movement that promotes environmentally
friendly habits such as creating walkable neighborhoods,
offering a wide range of housing and adding creative venues
and options.
COPYRIGHTED
66 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM

“Downtown Delray Beach has gorgeous single family homes with lush
tropical backyards, lots of townhomes with varying architecture and plenty
of condos with different views and little to no maintenance.”
Sullivan also raves about the five East Delray historic districts in town
with the classic “Old Florida” architecture. There are also “some stunning
modern masterpieces mixed right in to the landscape! When you put all
this in one small area this is what makes Delray so cool and unique.”
As a realtor Sullivan gets asked many times about where she likes to eat
and shop. In the name of full disclosure, she wants to address this query
and share her favorite Delray places.
She enjoys eating at Akira in the Ray Hotel – “They have the best food..
You must try the chicken (thank me later!) and Hands down best espresso
Martinis in town.”
Another Sullivan favorite is Le Colonial. This is a great addition to the
Delray dining scene, she said. “I love the food and the gorgeous atmosphere,
whether I’m in the dining room or having a drink in the cocktail
lounge it’s perfect. The service is also superb.”
She is also a big fan of Rose’s Daughter and enjoys their homemade pasta,
Farmhouse for their grilled salmon and Amar for their Mediterranean food.
And, like a lot of locals, Sullivan is a big fan of Tramonti and City Oyster (their
lobster rolls and raspberry point oysters).
Her favorite off the beaten path restaurant is Palm Trail Grill and she
enjoys the coffee shop and dessert at MO&MA. “You can never go wrong
with a cup of joe at the Coffee District or sitting outside on the patio at
The Seagate Hotel for a cup of coffee.”
For her Shopping suggestions Sullivan turns to Morley, Coco & Co and
Periwinkle. Also, a favorite is surf shop The Quiet Storm. It is a short drive
from the Avenue, but Nomad Surf Shop is always worth the trip.
“I am in love with the new Snappy Turtle home store next to Captain Clays
fish market! And the gift shop in the Seagate Hotel is a gem.” For wine Sullivan
heads to the Wine Wave in Waterway East Plaza.
“I often get asked where is the next hot spot and I must say I have my
eyes on Boynton Beach. I am excited about the growth of Boynton Beach.”
The Chapel Hill neighborhood is one of hottest in Palm Beach County.
Another area to watch is east of US1 in Boynton beach. “I recently sold a
point lot on the Intracoastal to a client building a beautiful custom home.
Once completed, I believe it will be one of the nicest homes in the city.”
When it comes to real estate listings Sullivan has some new exciting
ones to share.
She has a fully renovated historic home at 503 NE 2nd Avenue (the
pink house) listed for $2.070 million. She also has a three bedroom condo
penthouse at 801 Palm Trail - complete with a deeded boat slip and lift
- for $1.475 million, and a Lake Ida home on a double lot with gorgeous
backyard for $1.775 million. As for condos, she has a one-bedroom condo
listing at Delray Colonial for $305K. “I have a little something for everyone,”
she adds.
Sullivan had a notable sale this December at 510 Palm Trail. The single
family home sold in December for over $4 million.
As they say in the business, “If you want a great home and a greater
experience call Allyson Sullivan!”
ACUPUNCTURE ZEN
A Sanctuary of
Health and Healing
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTOS COURTESY OF ACUPUNCTURE ZEN
To honor perfection is a high form of being. To help
people in need of healing is another form of perfection.
Dr. Tony Willcox is both healer and master of perfection.
He won’t tell you this because humility is one of his other
traits. If you talk to his clients (and patients) they will tell
you that Dr. Tony is a master healer and kind-hearted practitioner
who has helped them tremendously.
Chad Renfro is one of them. The Consulting Producer and Osage
Nation Ambassador on Martin Scorsese’s new film, “Killers of the
Flower Moon” was recently at Acupuncture Zen.
He was travelling promoting the film and recently came back
from LA where he attended the Academy Awards Gala. “Acupuncture
is tremendous, Dr. Tony gives great care and kindness along
with good vibes. He helped me feel better after spending so much
time on the road. I also loved the NovoThor Red Light Therapy
which is both relaxing and energizing at the same time,” said Chad.
Paul, a retired Aviation veteran was plagued with neuropathy.
He had gone to many specialists for the burning sensation in his
feet and debilitating pain. The medications he was given by doctors
didn’t help either.
“I woke up every hour with pain and couldn’t sleep. I drive up
from Hollywood to see Dr. Tony and he developed a series of treatments
targeted for my condition using acupuncture and K Laser
Therapy. I have got to say, it has helped me tremendously!
I don’t have to soak my feet in ice anymore and I am functioning
better during the day, thanks to the treatments I am getting at Acupuncture
Zen. I now sleep through the night, and I am grateful that
my nerves are getting better.”
Many people come to Acupuncture Zen with all types of aches
and pains and are touting the positive life-changing experiences
they have had there.
Patients receive personalized targeted treatments for their specific
needs. Dr. Tony said, “We are all so different and as unique as a
fingerprint on your hand. Each person requires a unique treatment.”
Whether it’s a pain or a simple headache or a more complex
health concern, there’s a good chance Dr. Tony can help you. He has
helped many patients from all over the country (and internationally)
with his tried-and-true techniques in the past 18 years of clinical
practice.
Targeted therapeutic tools like the K Laser Speciale, a powerful
100-watt laser that uses Artificial Intelligence to give each patient a
unique and optimized treatment specifically for their body.
“The K laser increases circulation, nutrients, and oxygen to damaged
or injured areas of the body. It reduces inflammation, pain,
muscle stiffness and accelerates tissue regeneration enhancing
healing,” said Dr. Tony, who has a Double Doctorate in Acupuncture
and Chinese herbal Medicine, a Clinical Doctorate in the US, and a
PhD. in Acupuncture from Hefei, China.
Dr. Tony has not only studied with the finest minds in Oriental
medicine, but he is driven to help everyone who enters his healing
domain.
If you don’t believe in miracles just ask patient Steve.
“I had excruciating pain in my neck from cervical surgery that just
wouldn’t abate. I went to the hospital and was given drugs to no avail.
I had another MRI, saw my orthopedic surgeon again, and it didn’t
help. I could hardly turn my neck, driving and shaving was brutal.
Finally, my doctor said, ‘have you considered acupuncture?’ I
went to Acupuncture Zen and committed to 11 treatments. I’m now
happy to say I am 95% pain free, and my range of motion has vastly
improved. I give Dr. Tony all the credit.”
Steve is not the only patient whose life has been
turned around when all else has failed them. Finn
Murphy is another success story.
“Dr. Tony is absolutely the best! My visits consisted
of combined cutting-edge technology like the red
light and laser treatments with a masterful application
of acupuncture and cupping. I had been dealing
with a pinched nerve in my neck for three months and
he did more for my healing in a couple of visits than
all the other treatments I tried combined (which were
a lot). I can’t recommend Dr. Tony highly enough.”
Diego Dominguez, a former ATP Tennis Tour coach
now retired due to a severe injury to his spine said,
“I didn’t believe in miracles, and then I met Dr. Tony!
He got me walking straight and managing my condition.
I love the great energy at Acupuncture Zen,
and I am getting my life back, Dr. Tony is the best!”
Dmitry Kulikov, the Florida Panthers defender had
this to say: “Hockey is a physical sport so naturally my
body is taking a lot of hits. Acupuncture helps me to recover
from aches and pains and get ready for the games.
DMITRY KULIKOV, FLORIDA PANTHERS HAS BEEN A BELIEVER IN ACUPUNCTURE
AND DR. TONY SINCE THE INCEPTION OF HIS NHL CAREER IN 2009
Dr. Tony is great, and I always feel better after his treatments!”
One of the most revolutionary treatments that Steve (and others)
have had profound success with at Acupuncture Zen is the Novo-
THOR red light therapy.
There are only four NovoTHOR light tables in the State of Florida.
This whole-body red-light therapy system uses red and nearinfrared
light to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and speed up
healing, said Dr. Tony, who has been the acupuncturist for The NHL
Florida Panthers and on the Medical Team with a UFC Fight Team.
NovoTHOR is so successful at treating ailments and pain that it is
being used by US Special Forces, Olympians, Celebrities, Professional
Athletes and leading Sports Teams in the NFL, NBA, UFC & NHL.
Dr. Tony has developed his art of healing and blended it with
ancient wisdom at his state-of-the-art clinic.
ARTS GARAGE
BEST IN SHOW:
How Arts Garage’s Remarkable
Turnaround Came to Be
BY LAUREN AZAR
Palm Beach County is a renowned arts destination in South Florida,
with numerous art galleries, live music venues, and a vibrant mix
of for-profit and nonprofit initiatives. In Delray Beach specifically,
there are dozens of private galleries showcasing remarkable
artists, along with several venues that often explore various artistic
disciplines – and among them all, Arts Garage stands out.
70 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
The visual & performing art center is a literal beacon of light
in Downtown Delray Beach, with wraparound windows
glowing nightly, showcasing innovative and diverse visual
and performing arts experiences to devoted patrons from the local
community, South Florida, and to visitors from around the globe.
From Grammy Award-winning musicians to emerging, local artists,
Arts Garage hosts exceptional performances in its Stuart &
Shelby Theater while The Marshall Family Foundation Gallery at
Arts Garage exhibits emerging regional visual artists. Arts Garage
has become a renowned institution as it also provides educational
programming for both adults and children to grow their talents and
knowledge of the Visual & Performing Arts. However, it wasn’t always
this way.
Founded in 2011 as a Delray Beach Community Redevelopment
Agency (CRA) project, Arts Garage was initially created to
be a space similar to what would become Arts Warehouse (which
opened just down the street in Pineapple Grove six years later). By
2014, Arts Garage had transitioned into a not-for-profit organization
with a board of directors and opened as a New York City jazz
club-style venue. Beloved by its patrons near and far, the venue was
a clear hit in the local community and beyond. There was just one
problem: it was bleeding.
Arts Garage struggled to overcome financial problems, accounting
concerns, debts and incomplete audits, and the administration
was unable to adequately manage the establishment’s funds. The
dysfunction within the organization threatened both its funding
and its support from the city. By early 2016, the organization’s
reputation and financial forecast were dire and the venue’s closure
seemed likely.
Enter Marjorie Waldo.
Marjorie came from the education
world, with years of experience turning
around charter schools that lacked resources
and funding while she advocated
for at-risk youth. After a career shift from
education, Marjorie harnessed her expertise
in turnaround management to begin
consulting for underperforming businesses
and nonprofits. It was at this time that Marjorie
was introduced to Arts Garage as someone who could
potentially right the ship. After an open discussion with the Board
regarding the big changes that were necessary to save Arts Garage,
Marjorie was offered the position of CEO in October of 2016.
In November of 2016, with Marjorie officially on board, Arts Garage’s
financial struggles loomed large. The organization had hundreds
of thousands of dollars in debt, stacks of unpaid bills, and due
to missing documentation was years behind on mandatory audits.
Unphased, Marjorie took these challenges head-on by prioritizing
payments to staff, small businesses and local vendors. She reduced
accounts payable by cutting unnecessary expenses and negotiating
payment plans with large vendors. In January 2017, Marjorie
launched the Arts Garage’s Band of Angels, whose members committed
to an annual donation of $10K and helped the nonprofit recover
long-term debt.
With a small staff and limited resources, Marjorie began to rebuild
Arts Garage. She led improvements, eliminated overlaps,
implemented infrastructure systems, initiated operational adjustments,
and improved customer service standards. She created
policies and procedures to improve the Arts Garage experience
for both patrons and staff, and cultivated a team who shared her
vision. Marjorie implemented a sustainable business model that
increased the variety of musical genres as well as the number of
shows on the stage, which ultimately helped raise tickets sales and
increase revenue opportunities. And it didn’t stop there.
“I attended every show that first year, and I would make a list
of five to twenty-five things that we needed to improve,” Marjorie
recalls. “Do we need to paint the stage? Do the seats look okay and
are the tablecloths dirty? How are the acoustics? Do the patrons
look happy? Where’s the staff member making sure that the opening
of the doors isn’t disturbing the performance, and all of that
kind of stuff.”
Marjorie’s attention to detail combined with her leadership and
operational skills meant that by the end of 2019, Arts Garage’s future
was bright. The organization had increased its budget by over
25% and ticket sales were up by 30%. Then the pandemic hit.
PHOTOS BY STUDIO B2, INC.
PHOTOS BY ARTS GARAGE
Rather than letting Covid defeat her, Marjorie rallied. With all
of the tools she had implemented in place, zero debt and a small
reserve, and all audits completed, she was determined to not let
the two-week shutdown ruin what she had built. Instead, she put a
plan in place, and adapted. During the pandemic, Marjorie made it
a priority to support local talent by continuing to produce live performances
with a commitment to book each one for the stage once
the venue reopened. She honored her commitment to donors by
live streaming and recording performances, all of which were free
and open to the community, until in-person entertainment could
resume. Although ticket sales were non-existent at the time, Marjorie
utilized reserves, leveraged numerous and large grants and loan
opportunities, and engaged in creative guerilla marketing to keep
the organization afloat.
Three years later, Arts Garage has not only returned to its prepandemic
success, but it is better than ever, outperforming even
its most successful pre-pandemic times. Over the past year, on top
of hosting over 300 performances, community events and classes
and with more than half of all performances sold out – Marjorie
has secured numerous grants, with 30% of funding coming from
significant grant funders, including the CRA, Florida Department
of Cultural Affairs, and the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County.
Combined with generous gifts from donors and record-breaking
tickets sales, the Arts Garage budget is 46% higher this year than
it was in 2016.
“This is a significant achievement, particularly for a smaller nonprofit
organization,” explained Marjorie. “We’ve learned a great
deal from our turnaround efforts and we’ve built a toolbox to make
our organization more sustainable and adept at increasing revenue
streams and audience engagement.”
And with Marjorie leading the way, it’s clear Arts Garage’s impact
here locally and beyond, is untold.
Reasons Most People Fail at
Their New Year’s Resolutions
(and How You Can Beat the Odds) 5Who doesn’t love getting a fresh start? For many people, January is the
perfect time to shake off old vices and create some positive new habits.
But good intentions don’t always translate into actual change.
By February, the majority of resolution-setters have abandoned
their new goals and fallen back into their old ways.
Why does this happen? There are a number of common reasons
why most people don’t stick to their New Year’s resolutions. If you
make one of these mistakes, you’ll probably find yourself giving up
on your resolutions, too.
1. NOT BEING REALISTIC
Shooting for the moon isn’t always the best strategy. In fact,
sometimes it can prevent you from even getting off the ground. Realistically,
almost no one can learn a new language in six months
or become a runner overnight, but many people make overly-optimistic
resolutions like these every year. If you’re too ambitious
with your New Year’s resolutions, you’ll end up getting burned out
before January is over.
2. MAKING TOO MANY RESOLUTIONS
Even small resolutions can be hard to keep if you make too
many of them. It’s easy to get overwhelmed if you try to change
more than one or two habits at a time. Besides that, making a
lot of different resolutions is a sign that you haven’t put much
thought into each one, and it’s easy to give up on resolutions that
aren’t meaningful to you.
3. NOT SETTING SPECIFIC GOALS
If your resolution is something like “lose weight” or “get better
grades,” you aren’t likely to succeed. Why? Because these goals are
vague and hard to track. Useful goals are specific and measurable
- for instance, “lose 10 pounds by March” or “get an A in calculus.”
4. NOT MAKING A PLAN
Along with a specific goal, you need a plan. How are you going
to turn your resolutions into reality? Many people fail at keeping
their resolutions because they don’t turn their goals into specific
action steps.
5. GIVING UP TOO SOON
Perseverance is important for forming any new habit in your life,
but many people throw in the towel on their resolutions as soon as
something goes wrong. It’s important to stay flexible and to avoid
getting discouraged too quickly, even if your resolutions are tougher
to keep than you thought they’d be. Adjusting a goal to be more
realistic is better than giving up on it completely.
How Can You Beat the Odds
and Keep Your Resolutions?
Failing to keep New Year’s resolutions is very common - but the
good news is that it’s not inevitable. A minority of people do stick
to their resolutions every year, and if you’d like to be one of them,
there are some things you can do to increase your odds of success.
1. SET ONLY RESOLUTIONS THAT
ARE MEANINGFUL TO YOU.
If you don’t really care about your resolutions, you won’t stick
to them. Avoid choosing this year’s resolutions based on what you
think will impress other people. Instead, choose goals that you’re
deeply invested in.
2. PLAN FOR THE LONG HAUL.
Many people think of New Year’s resolutions as a quick fix for the
previous year’s problems and bad habits. In reality, though, it takes
time to create lasting changes in your life. Make your resolutions
with the knowledge that you’ll need to work on them consistently,
and adopt the mindset that if you fall off the wagon, you’ll climb
right back on.
3. TAKE BABY STEPS.
Every big achievement is made up of a series of small action
steps. Break your goals down ahead of time, so you won’t get overwhelmed
when the new year rolls around. When you transform a
big resolution into a lot of small, doable steps, you’ll always know
what to do next.
4. TRACK AND CELEBRATE YOUR PROGRESS.
One of the best ways to stay on track is to look back at how far
you’ve come. It might be hard to see how your small victories matter
from moment to moment, but over time, those little wins really
add up. Keep a log of all your progress, and reward yourself for
COPYRIGHTED
76 | JANUARY 2024 | WWW.ATLANTICAVEMAGAZINE.COM
meeting milestones on the way to your main goal.
The Takeaway
New Year’s resolutions get a bad rap because most people give up
on them after a few weeks. But if you love setting goals for yourself
at the start of the year, don’t give up on the idea of resolutions just
yet. Resolutions can actually be a very useful tool. By taking the right
approach and avoiding these five common mistakes, you might find
it easier than you expected to keep your resolutions all year long.

“Dear
Cheryl,”
I get many questions on a daily basis
throughout my matchmaking career. Three
of the most frequently asked questions I get
are as follows:
Q: “If I go on a first date, and I don’t feel I am
physically attracted to the person, should I even
go out on a second date? Or should I tell him right
away?
A: When people meet, they want to have butterflies
and hope it’s love at first sight. But that’s actually not
the case. I always have a two date rule. I feel the first
time you meet someone, there are nerves involved,
and sometimes people feel they are on an interview.
The second date usually people are more themselves,
and you can see a different side of someone. So when
it comes to attraction, there are 5 different types! As
long as you have at least one of these, you should
definitely proceed to a 2nd date! Look for either a
physical, emotional, intellectual, romantic or sexual
attraction. If you don’t have at least one of these, then
thanking them for their time, and explaining you had a
nice date but do not feel any connection and wish
them the best of luck.
Q: I have been out of the dating loop for a while. Is
there any advice you can give me today for a first
date?
A: A first date seems very easy for some people that
have been single a while. But sometimes when you’ve
been out of the loop, there’s certain tips that you
should remember:
Ask questions to get to know each other, do not
make it like an interview. And take turns talking.
Sometimes being a good listener is most
important.
Do not talk about exes, reason for a divorce,
religion, politics or medical issues on a first date.
Dress to impress! You have one chance to make a
great first impression!
Women, always offer to help with the bill. Men, do
not take her up on that offer!
Men-always walk a woman to her car. If she saw
Ladies, offering to pay for valet is a beautiful
gesture. Women- always thank him! And when you
get home, text him you’re home safely, and thank
him again for the dinner.
Be the date you want to have!
Q: What types of pictures should I have on my
dating profile?
A: Pictures on a dating profile is what will capture the
interest of others. Use as many full length photos as
possible. Try to show hobbies and interests in your
profile. Your pictures should tell a story about who you
are.l! Try to display different types of looks, such as
gym attire, a daytime look and definitely one formal
picture. Minimize filtering as much as possible! And
keep your pictures as recent as possible.! I always tell
members in my database, every 4-6 weeks they should
change up their pictures as well! Keep it interesting!
Q: I have young children, and I don’t know whether
I should list their ages on my dating profile.
A: I believe there’s no point of hiding anything, but at
the same time, everything doesn’t need to be disclosed
either. I think listing that you have children and the
amount of children is very important. Everyone has a
different opinion as to what age of children will work for
them. So I believe that could be a conversation after
you start communicating with someone. You might hit it
off so much, that having young kids won’t matter to
someone. Other times, you may be in two different
stages of life, where an empty nester might not feel
someone with young kids would be compatible. But at
least have that opportunity to speak with someone,
before disqualifying anyone based on an assumption.
Max Zengage
REGULARS | CITY PEOPLE
To Max Zengage there is no such thing
as a roadblock. Not in his life or the
events that he so bravely produces.
Max is young by community leader standards,
yet he is wise beyond his years. “I am an old
soul,” he often muses.
Perhaps he is. There is no one who would dispute
that claim.
As a matter of fact, everyone who knows him is in awe
of his tenacity and love for Delray Beach (his birthplace).
“Max’s enthusiasm and energy are infectious. He is
selfless and puts our town, and the many organizations
he helps, ahead of his own interests. He is the future of
leadership in Delray,” said Billy Himmelrich.
You bet he does. Max spends most of his waking
hours in the pursuit of making people’s lives better and
creating ways to support the city he so loves.
His crowning achievement is bringing the Concours
d’Elegance event to Delray Beach. This prestigious antique
car show has a storied past, and up until three
years ago was not held in Delray. But Max had a dream,
and when that happens he focuses all of his energy into
turning every no into a yes.
The results are spectacular. “We welcomed 10,000
people last year! It was pretty amazing - we didn’t expect
that many,” said Max, who is small in stature but
large in innovation and community participation.
If you don’t know about the Concours events, then
you should know they are antique car shows with the
pomp and circumstance of a regal event.
To Max it is a huge part of his life. “I spend 4 to 5 hours
a day making plans for this one day event. This is not
any car show it is the most prestigious level car event
in the world.”
There are 44 of these shows in the US and it is a privilege
to have one in Delray Beach. To Max, this event is a
full-time job even though he works for Stuart & Shelby
in construction administration.
Max sees both the business angle of his job and
the fever pitch of loyalty to Delray Beach as the byproduct
of his profession. “I like working on projects
that contribute to the community and I get to work
on historic, affordable and custom homes that add to
the economy.”
Those around him are quick to hail his community
heroism. “Max is an outstanding community leader in
Delray because he possesses a unique combination of
traits and qualities that enable him to inspire, motivate,
BY DIANE FEEN | PHOTO BY MELISSA KORMAN
Creator Of Experiences:
Delray Visionary And Volunteer
and guide others towards a common philanthropic goal
through his joyful events,” said Nicole Grimes.
To Max all the world is a puzzle to be put into its rightful
place. He spends most of his time either volunteering
for good causes or creating them. He recently rode in the
Delray Holiday Parade on Atlantic Avenue in a caravan
of 10 classic cars. Each car had a Concours banner with
community leaders and business people in the cars.
It’s not the thrill of the hunt that motivates this
young man, but instead a form of altruism. “All of the
proceeds go to Delray first responder and youth nonprofits
that demonstrate measurable impact. Last year
we raised over $30,000. I feel a great sense of community,
responsibility and civic duty to the Delray community.
My family has lived in here for half a century.”
He makes good on that promise. As a child Max loved
the Bed Races that often took place in Pineapple Grove.
The races stopped but recently Max resurrected the
Bed Races and held them on southeast 2nd Avenue. He
took pride in showing locals and tourists the sights and
sounds of the Southern side of town.
Max was also a volunteer in the caravan that delivered
Thanksgiving dinners to Delray Beach Fire Rescue
and Delray Police who were at work that day. “I got to
ride in a 1937 Ford Fire Truck that had repairs done by
different charities. Concours was one of the sponsors.”
To know Max is to know that his love for cars is insurmountable.
When he starts talking about cars you can
feel the gravity in his voice and the anticipation in his
shirt sleeves. “The thing I love about cars is that it’s perfect
time traveling. To drive on A1A in a classic roadster
is a natural high. You become one with the car.”
Max has a way of becoming one with most of his
outings. He attributes that to his diagnoses of Asperger’s
syndrome. To some this would be something
to hide, but to Max it is something to herald. “It is a
strength by letting me focus and follow through with
things. I get to come out of my head and splash the
urban playground.”
And boy does he. Max is the youngest appointed city
official in Delray history (chair of the Public Art Advisory
Board) and is on the board for the Community Classroom
Project at Space of Mind.
He also brings classic cars to local events such as Art
& Jazz on the Avenue. The young man who has a Mas-
ter’s degree in Real Estate Development and a Master’s in Urban planning
is always dreaming – in a big beautiful way.
“I plan on running for office in 2030 and I have a 50-year plan for Concours.
I focus on the future of Delray, especially Artist Alley for next year.”
Those around Max are amazed at his steely determination and philanthropic
patronage. “Having Max Zengage in our community has been
a breath of fresh air! He devotes so much of his time and energy to
many volunteer projects that he’s involved in. All with the goal of making
our city a better place for everyone,” said Shelly Himmelrich.
Jeff Perlman agrees. “Max is an extraordinary young man. He is involved
in so many worthwhile projects and truly loves Delray Beach.
He’s extremely smart, very ambitious and works very, very hard. He’s
making an impact today, but I have a feeling the best is yet to come.”
If you wonder how this young man of 25 has the heart of a world
leader and the head of a philanthropist, look no further than his mother,
Simone Mehlbaum. She worked tirelessly as a fundraiser, lead organizer
at Max’s school and she created toy and food drives.
“My mother is my inspiration and role model. She did so much volunteering
at my school that people thought she was a teacher. She always
donated her time to nonprofits.”
It seems the apple does not fall far from the proverbial tree of goodness.
And, everyone who lives in Delray is grateful for the fertile graciousness
of spirit that swirls around her son Max.
The 3rd Annual Concours d’Elegance is April 21st.
GARLIC
SAUTÉED
SPINACH
INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 pounds baby spinach leaves
2 tablespoons good olive oil
2 tablespoons chopped garlic (6 cloves)
2 teaspoons kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Lemon
Sea or kosher salt, optional
COPYRIGHTED
DIRECTIONS
1. Rinse the spinach well in cold water to make sure it’s very
clean. Spin it dry in a salad spinner, leaving just a little water
clinging to the leaves.
2. In a very large pot or Dutch oven, heat the olive oil and sauté
the garlic over medium heat for about 1 minute, but not until
it’s browned. Add all the spinach, the salt, and pepper to the
pot, toss it with the garlic and oil, cover the pot, and cook it for
2 minutes. Uncover the pot, turn the heat on high, and cook the
spinach for another minute, stirring with a wooden spoon, until
all the spinach is wilted. Using a slotted spoon, lift the spinach
to a serving bowl and top with the butter, a squeeze of lemon,
and a sprinkling of sea or kosher salt. Serve hot.
INGREDIENTS
4 (5 oz. each) salmon fillets
2 teaspoons olive oil plus 2 tablespoons
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
3 tomatoes, chopped, or 1 (14 oz.) can chopped tomatoes, drained
2 chopped shallots
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried thyme
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
2. Sprinkle salmon with 2 teaspoons olive oil, salt, and pepper.
Stir the tomatoes, shallots, 2 tablespoons of oil, lemon juice,
oregano, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium bowl to blend.
3. Place a salmon fillet, oiled side down, atop a sheet of foil.
Wrap the ends of the foil to form a spiral shape. Spoon the
tomato mixture over the salmon. Fold the sides of the foil over
the fish and tomato mixture, covering completely; seal the
packets closed. Place the foil packet on a heavy large baking
sheet. Repeat until all of the salmon have been individually
INGREDIENTS
1 large head cauliflower, separated into 1-inch florets
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium onion, finely diced
Kosher salt
2 tablespoons fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped
Juice of 1/2 lemon
DIRECTIONS
1. Trim the cauliflower florets, cutting away as much
stem as possible. In 3 batches, break up the florets into
a food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles
couscous.
2. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
At the first wisp of smoke from the oil, add the onions,
and stir to coat. Continue cooking, stirring frequently,
until the onions are golden brown at the edges and have
softened, about 8 minutes. Add the cauliflower, and stir
to combine. Add 1 teaspoon salt, and continue to cook,
stirring frequently, until the cauliflower has softened, 3
to 5 minutes. Remove from the heat.
3. Spoon the cauliflower into a large serving bowl,
garnish with the parsley, sprinkle with the lemon juice
and season to taste with salt. Serve warm.
to be at the heart of and involved in many innovative
advances. So much practical and scientific knowledge is available
today. The vast wisdom available gives pet parents so many
options, but how do you know who and what to believe?
I evaluate the pet health field as a system with many moving and
functional parts that must work together. A holistic lifestyle is looking
at the body with its individually specialized systems, such as the
circulatory or endocrine systems which are dependent upon all the
other systems.
With all these innovations available to integrate the care of our
pets; modern medicine and the pet food industry are taking a specialized
approach that segregates the various segments instead of
utilizing integration. Unfortunately, this is more costly for pet owners
as they are referred to specialists or “so-called” specialty diets
that look at the symptoms of a condition but not the root causes for
them to be managed.
We know that diabetes is a metabolic condition caused by improper
diet, and liver issues can be caused by toxic chemicals and
drugs; however, in many cases is reversed with lifestyle changes. The
conventional approach is a single food entrée as a staple for the rest
of your pet’s life with no adjustments for any other condition that
may be caused by this entrée. On the medical side, the approach is to
manage insulin levels to maintain glucose levels but not to eliminate
the cause or create a physiological healing solution.
The same is true with cancer and most other health challenges
where the conventional approach is to look at the symptoms only
and prescribe symptom relief instead of searching for the causes and
correcting them.
Contrast this with the comprehensive, holistic approach. We will
use diabetes as an example to illustrate the difference. With all the
parameters being the same, the holistic approach is to view the complete
history of diet, vaccinations, prior challenges, and treatments
including any adverse effects on record for any of the products. With
this overall evaluation of risk and benefits, a lifestyle change to heal
instead of alleviating or masking the symptoms is the approach. Eliminating
carbohydrate sugar-based foods and restoring normal liver
and pancreatic functions can allow the body the ability to heal itself.
That same approach is effective except for traumatic or acute
emergencies. This aforementioned holistic approach is also appropriate
as aftercare to these emergency events. The body is designed
to heal itself and our approach must always be to provide the natural
tools for that to occur.
In looking at the different processes, would you rather your pets
heal and live a long, healthy, and happy life or be symptom- relieved
but include the adverse effects that come with all drugs and medication,
which presents both physical and financial stress on the pet
and its owner? Remember the old saying, “an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure. “
The choice is clear but not always an easy decision to question
the status quo. You have choices. Find the true experts and question
them until you understand
