Satisfaction - or a bit of Jumpin’ Jack Flash!! Both can be seen at the Amphitheater, at
Old School Square, 51 N Swinton Ave, Delray Beach. For a full list of events go to www.
Atlantic Crossing Update:
atlantic AVe mAGAzine on VACAtion
Atlantic Crossing’s first phase is well along, transforming the
stretch of Atlantic Ave. between Federal Hwy. and NE 7th Ave.
with the Brez luxury apartments, new-to-the market restaurants, initial
shops, corporate offices and the pedestrian promenade. Completion
of this phase is projected in January, 2024, with work now underway
on the final component – the second Brez apartment building.
Phase 2 demolition is now clearing Atlantic Crossing’s eastern
block of the Atlantic Plaza and Merrill Lynch buildings to make way
for the final mixed-use retail/office building and the park-side condominiums.
This phase’s three buildings and two garages are projected
for completion in 2027.
As the pieces of this $300 million investment in Delray’s future
come together, Edwards Companies has the rare opportunity to reshape
two city blocks with new options for downtown living, working
and enjoying leisure time. You can stay tuned at www.atlanticcrossingdelray.com
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in September for $50 or less.
8th Annual Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant Month
You’re busy, you’re tired, but you’re hungry. Even hangry.
You might even have a partner and some offspring who are
famished, too. What. To. Do. Think, act, enjoy! September
is International Strategic Thinking Month and is the absolute
perfect time to head downtown for some mess-free, hassle-free
and dollar-saving grub. The crowds are less, the temperature
is finally cooling off slightly, and you’re in full work and school
swing, which means you need a break. This is why the Eighth Annual
Downtown Delray Beach Restaurant Month is calling your
name. For the entire month of September, more than 30 local
restaurants, cafes, fast-casual establishments and eateries have
expertly crafted special multi-course prix size lunch and dinner
menus, happy hour and brunch specials, and culinary events, all
with a goal to fill you up but not empty your wallet. Expect to enjoy
tasty treats from Amar Mediterranean Bistro, Bar 25, Dada,
Drift Restaurant & Bar, The Grove Restaurant, Racks Fish House &
Oyster Bar, Two Fat Cookies, and more. Try one, try them all, just
make sure to give your kitchen a break and let someone else do
the cooking and cleaning for you. Reservations aren’t mandatory
but are encouraged! For specific restaurant information and more
details about Restaurant Month, please visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com
Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival
It’s Fall, ya’ll! Well, we as Floridians use the term “Fall” loosely,
but it’s still worth getting excited about. September is Fall Hat
Month so grab your hat and head outdoors because we’ve got a
craft festival to attend. The Downtown Delray Beach Craft Festival
is once again back in town and is a great way to spend a couple of
hours over the weekend enjoying the outdoors, possibly finding a
new piece for your home, and obviously not passing up on some
of the Avenue’s refreshing cocktails. The Festival is located at the
Classic Albums Live: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Beethoven and Mozart to Queen and The Rolling Stones,
classics are the best. Regardless of your preference, there
is a type of music for everyone’s ears. September is Classical
Music Month and there’s an amazing way to celebrate this
holiday: by heading outside and jamming out with a few thousand
of your local community members. Mark your calendars for Classic
Albums Live: Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and get as close to
the original musicians as you can as they recreate the Rumours album
by Fleetwood Mac. Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic
Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on
stage - note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. “Think
of it as a recital,” said Martin, “these albums are historic and stand
the test of time.” Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic
Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the
music. The event is held on Friday, September 15 from 6 to 10
p.m. at the Amphitheatre at Old School Square. Tickets are $25 for
general admission or $40 for VIP (reserved seat, air-conditioned
bathrooms, and one drink ticket). “Now here you go again, you
say you want your freedom,” so get out there and get it! The Amphitheatre
at Old School Square is located at 51 N. Swinton Ave.
Warren Delray
Once it hits your lips! Dark liquor is best enjoyed neat, or
with a nice big ol’ cube of ice, or in a crafty cocktail. Let
the liquor speak for itself, people! September is Bourbon
Heritage Month and if you aren’t lucky enough to have multiple
distilleries in your home, or don’t want just your average ho-hum
bottle of bourbon, you’re in luck. The good people at Warren Delray
- your new favorite American Whiskey Kitchen - have expertly
crafted a cocktail menu that offers some of the most delicious
and creative bourbon-centered drinks this side of the Mississippi,
partner, and you’re invited to mosey on in and bottom’s up. Start
with the Marion’s Mule, made with Four Roses Bourbon, housemade
ginger beer and lime for $15, or enjoy the O.G.O.F., made
with Buffalo Trace Bourbon, cane syrup Bitter Truth bitters, and
an orange peel for $14. If you prefer something more straightforward,
just ask for their Beverage Bible and their private “single
barrel” selections. They even cook with it! Try the Shaved Brussels
Sprouts Salad, made with Brussels sprouts, kale, five-minute
egg, smoked bacon, Parmesan, Marcona almonds and a maple
bourbon vinaigrette for $17, or their Warren’s Damn Good Burger,
Lemongrass | cABAna El Rey
Pasta is life, but some people might disagree, as it’s all about
the rice. Wrapped around raw fish, served under a mountain
of curry, or dished up as a creamy risotto or spicy arroz
anything, all signs point to yes and more yes. Even if you haven’t
yet boarded the rice train, or you are the self-proclaimed conductor,
it’s the most delicious time to grind the grain as September is
National Rice Month. Start your culinary journey at Lemongrass
with their $19 Poke Bowl, made with tuna or salmon poke and
served with a choice of rice, green salad or a brown rice base with
edamame, seaweed salad, avocado, ginger, spicy kani and nori. Or,
try the spicier side of life with Hawkers Asian Street Food and
their Hawker’s Delight. This saucy blend of wok-seared tofu, broccoli,
carrots, napa cabbage, bell peppers and straw mushrooms
served with jasmine rice for $12 is sure to delight your palate.
If you’d like to enjoy a dish where rice is boss, then look no further
than Cabana El Rey’s Paella Marinera. It’s a perfect blend of
shrimp, octopus, calamari, scallops, clams and mussels simmered
with saffron and garlic in a caldera of Valencia rice for $36. Yes,
we are all getting hungry now. Rice is nice, don’t you agree? Please
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, American Renegades, The Protégé).
They shot this on location in Naples, Rome, and the Amalfi Coast
► Dumb Money
Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the
insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on
Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame
store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is
regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life
savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start
blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him.
As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the
billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside
down. Dumb Money is directed by acclaimed Australian filmmaker
Craig Gillespie, director of the movies Mr. Woodcock, Lars and the
► The Kill Room
Patrice Capullo (Uma Thurman) has a big problem: her art gallery
isn’t making money. Gordon (Samuel L. Jackson) has an even
bigger problem, while arranging hits for the mob is lucrative, he &
his ”colleague” Reggie (Joe Manganiello) need a better way to launder
their money. A chance introduction from Patrices’s drug dealer has
the art world meet the underworld, and a plan is hatched. The one
hitch: Patrice needs something to sell. With that, Reggie taps into
his inner artist and makes a painting which immediately “sells” for
an incredibly high price. When the noteworthy price for this new
mystery artist accidentally leaks, the art career of “The Bagman”
is born, attracting attention and press, something his superiors in
the underworld are very unhappy with. The Kill Room is directed
by American comedian / actress / writer / filmmaker Nicol Paone,
her second feature after directing Friendsgiving previously. Uma
Thurman stars with Joe Manganiello, Samuel L. Jackson.
Tom Lake
By Ann Patchett
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three
daughters return to the family’s orchard
in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries,
they beg their mother to tell them the
story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with
whom she shared both a stage and a romance
years before at a theater company
called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past,
her daughters examine their own lives
and relationship with their mother, and
are forced to reconsider the world and everything
they thought they knew.
Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful
love, married love, and the lives parents
have led before their children were
born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores
what it means to be happy even when the
world is falling apart. As in all of her novels,
Ann Patchett combines compelling
narrative artistry with piercing insights
into family dynamics. The result is a rich
and luminous story, told with profound
intelligence and emotional subtlety, that
demonstrates once again why she is one
of the most revered and acclaimed literary
talents working today. This “sweeping
intergenerational saga” tells the story
of a pampered and defiant South Korean
matriarch thrust into the afterlife from
which she seeks a second chance to make
amends (Kirstin Chen)—and fights off a
tragic curse that could devastate generations
to come.
The Apology
By Jimin Han
In South Korea, a 105-year-old woman
receives a letter. Ten days later, she has
been thrust into the afterlife, fighting to
head off a curse that will otherwise devastate
generations to come.
Hak Jeonga has always shouldered the
burden of upholding the family name.
When she sent her daughter-in-law to
America to cover up an illegitimate birth,
she was simply doing what was needed to
preserve the reputations of her loved ones.
How could she have known that decades
later, this decision would return to haunt
her—threatening to tear apart her bond
with her beloved son, her relationship with
her infuriatingly insolent sisters, and the
future of the family she has worked so hard
to protect?
Part ghost story and part family epic,
The Apology is an incisive tale of sisterhood
and diaspora, reaching back to the days of
Japanese colonialism and the Korean War,
and told through the singular voice of a defiant,
funny, and unforgettable centenarian.
An exuberant, bighearted novel about
two teenage misfits who spectacularly collide
one fateful summer, and the art they
make that changes their lives forever
Sixteen-year-old Frankie Budge—aspiring
writer, indifferent student, offbeat
loner—is determined to make it through
yet another summer in Coalfield, Tennessee,
when she meets Zeke, a talented artist
who has just moved into his grandmother’s
house and who is as awkward as Frankie is.
Romantic and creative sparks begin to fly,
and when the two jointly make an unsigned
poster, shot through with an enigmatic
phrase, it becomes unforgettable to anyone
who sees it. The edge is a shantytown filled
with gold seekers. We are fugitives, and the
law is skinny with hunger for us.
The posters begin appearing everywhere, and people
wonder who is behind them and start to panic. Satanists,
kidnappers—the rumors won’t stop, and soon the mystery
has dangerous repercussions that spread far beyond
the town.
Twenty years later, Frances Eleanor Budge gets a call
that threatens to upend her carefully built life: a journalist
named Mazzy Brower is writing a story about the
Coalfield Panic of 1996. Might Frances know something
about that?
Like a River:
By Granger Smith
Like a River, a triumphant story of new life birthed out
of tragedy, will teach readers how to face their failures,
confront their pain, and connect with God—the true
source of life.
On June 4th, 2019, country music singer Granger Smith
was enjoying a final evening with his kids before heading
to Nashville for the CMT Music Awards and his next tour.
While helping his daughter London with her gymnastics,
his youngest son fell into their pool. Granger did everything
he could to get to him, but he was too late. River
drowned, and Granger’s world shattered.
The days, weeks, and months that followed River’s
death sent Granger on a dark and painful journey. Every
time he closed his eyes, he replayed the horrific event in
his mind, and every time he opened his computer, he was
bombarded by the critique and criticism of people who
blamed him for the accident.
Despite his best effort to get back on stage with a smile
and song, it was all a façade. On the inside he was dying.
Fortunately, that’s not how his story ended. And now he
is compelled to help people all around the world find
strength, peace, and hope on the other side of tragedy.
Like a River, life is full of twists and turns.
Like a River, people pollute our world with their critique
and criticism.
Like a River, tragic events keep us dammed up.
But like a river, we can find the courage to keep moving
downstream.
Rivers don’t run on their own strength; they flow from
their source. When we try to keep going on our own, we
won’t make it, but when we connect to the greater source,
we will find the strength and the faith to keep living after
loss. This triumphant story of new life birthed out of
death will inspire every reader to live Like a River.
health & beauty | pain relief
By Dr. Safranski
A Functional Life
As we age, it invariably becomes more important to continue
to move. I often get push back from the 65+ community
about how to move and that they move enough.
I
am here to tell you that playing tennis or pickleball 2-3 times
a week may seem like enough movement, and it may be for
your cardiovascular output, but it certainly is not a functional
directed movement that is meant to target and help stabilize the
joints that ache daily. Gone are the days of static stretching. Static
stretching is only beneficial after getting the blood flowing postworkout
or after a dynamic workout. So “stretching” daily really
isn’t going to do much outside of temporary relief. For those looking
for a start, here are 10 quick pointers on how chiropractic and
functional movement can help you stay active during retirement.
For more clarity, here is the commonly used definition of a
functional movement. “a functional movement is a movement sequence
based on real-world situations.”
Importance of Mobility: maintaining mobility is extremely
important. Gone are the days of being
strong and stiff. We now know the importance
of being strong in positions
that are functional. Here’s a challenge,
find a movement, a bodyweight squat
is a great one. Go down as far as
you can without losing
your balance. Hold that
position for 15-30 seconds.
Are you breathing
in that position? Probably
not. That means you really don’t
“own that position”, here enters
mobility—the process of being able
to do the movement without struggle
through a full range of motion.
Gentle Exercise: Encouraging
low-impact exercises
like walking, swimming,
or yoga can be beneficial
for their joint health and
flexibility, complementing
chiropractic care.
However, as I mentioned
above, this is not the only
thing you should be doing. My
question to you is, if your neck is a problem,
how is walking with your legs
going to strengthen the muscles of
the neck?
Strengthening Core Muscles:
Emphasize the significance of core
strength for stability and balance, which can be achieved through
exercises and functional movements tailored to their abilities. This
alone can be beneficial to get you on the right track. I encourage patients
of all ages to challenge themselves to strengthen their core.
Pain Management: Chiropractic care can help alleviate chronic
pain, joint discomfort, and muscle stiffness, allowing them to engage
in physical activities more comfortably. Getting adjusted is
just one piece of the pie, but it helps all the others to be effective.
Preventing Injuries: Chiropractic care and functional movement
practices can help prevent injuries during everyday activities
and during exercise routines. Chiropractic care coupled with the
right physical therapy, and functional movement protocols can help
push forward through most musculoskeletal pains and aches.
Individualized Approach: Personalized treatment plans based
on their specific needs and health conditions, ensuring safety and effectiveness
are a must! Cookie-cutter approaches are a thing of the
past and make people feel like just a number in a conveyor belt of an
office. A personal approach lets your patients know you care. We care.
Regular Check-ups: Regular chiropractic check-ups allow us to
track your progress and alter the treatment plan as needed. I empower
my patients to take the time to learn about their bodies and
learn what makes them feel well. I personally get adjusted 2-3x a
week due to the physicality of my job, so that is what makes my
body feel well, so I encourage people to take the time to know how
often they should get adjusted or do maintenance work.
Social Benefits: The social aspects of staying active are what
retirement is all about. Joining group exercises or classes, playing
racket sports, walking on the beach, playing cards, dinners, drinks
or whatever floats your boat! Being active is what we live for!
Adaptation for Abilities: Being functionally strong and mobile
will help you be able to do the simple things, like cooking, cleaning,
and taking care of yourself as well. We don’t want to depend on others
to do the things we should be able to do for ourselves.
Holistic Health: Chiropractic care and functional movement can
contribute to their overall well-being, including improved sleep,
mood, and mental clarity.
Remember to always tailor your movements to the individual’s
specific needs and conditions. I encourage you to consult with
healthcare professionals that will help aid in finding the movements
that are specific to your condition.
5 Ways to Optimize
Your Results!
Looking to get the most out of your time in the
gym or speed up your results? Here are 5 tips
to ensure your mind and booty are in the game!
1. Go in with a GOAL!
Have a specific goal in mind! It could be to finish a
set without stopping, it could be to go 5lb heavier, it
could be to rest less. Pick something that is doable
and that will make you feel accomplished! It
doesn’t have to be anything crazy either, just
something that will keep your mind engaged
and your body pushing through. I usually
imagine my booty in a bathing suit bottom,
that usually does the trick for me!
2. Push YOURSELF!!
I see way too many clients slacking!
Stopping way before they could. Picking
up weights that are too light, just generally
going half ass! And these are clients
that we can SEE! I can only imagine
what goes on for virtual clients that we
don’t see. If you’re constantly picking
up the same weight day after day, and
resting too much, you’re not going to
see the results that you could be seeing!
To change your body, you need to
push your body! Get out of your comfort
zone! Working out doesn’t always feel
good. Feeling amazing and being
healthy does!
3. Focus on YOU!
Don’t compare yourself to anyone
else! Everyone is on a different journey with
different goals. You are your only competition!
Don’t waste time wondering what
speed your neighbor on the treadmill is on,
focus on doing YOUR best! YOU are your
own competition.
4. Go in with GRATITUDE!
Approach your workout with a POSITIVE mindset.
Focus on the fact that you GET to workout,
not that you “have” to workout! Be grateful that
you’re able bodied, alive, and healthy. If you go
through the workout saying, “I don’t want to do
this,” “This sucks,” etc., then chances are it’s
going to show in your performance. Mindset
is everything and what’s going on in your
head, is going to show in your workout.
It’s only 1 hour, 4% of your day, give
yourself that time.
5. Go HEAVY!
As most of you already know,
lifting heavy weights is not going
to make you bulky. Going heavier
on the weights will help you burn
more calories and transform your
body faster! You can always drop
down to lighter weights if you
need to! But if you don’t at least
TRY or attempt to pick up that
heavier weight, then you’ll never
know what you’re capable of! You
might just surprise yourself!
And lastly, remind yourself
this: The only workout you’ll really
REGRET is the one that DIDN’T
happen!
Jonathan Escoffery
Interviewed and written by Emily Peters | Photo by Cola Greenhill-Casados
Jonathan Escoffery’s debut book, If I Survive You, persuades the reader
to ponder one of the most important questions of the human experience
- what are you? Masterfully chronicled, this collection of linked stories
is a powerful rendition of what it means to grow up examining your
identity, and the lengths one will go to while figuring it out.
In the first short story, “In Flux,” we are introduced to Trelawny
- the youngest son of Jamaican-born parents who fled to the United
States from their homeland, in hopes of escaping political upheaval
and a consequential rapidly increasing crime-rate. Setting the
tone that will continue the underlying trope throughout the novel,
Escoffery’s personal experience mirrors the main character, having
spent his formative years in South Florida encountering many of
these inquiries himself. The metropolitan areas of Miami-Dade, and
Broward Counties equally become fundamental figures by themselves,
serving as a backdrop for a diverse cast of personalities, each
striving to survive life’s calamities - including Hurricane Andrew.
“It’s all influenced by my experience growing up in Miami with
Jamaican parents - but I think of myself as a storyteller first, moreso
than a chronicler of my own life. Since I was eight years old I’ve
been writing and trying to tell interesting and compelling stories.
Some of the choices Trelawny makes, I’ve never even had to think
about… but I did go to grad school in the Midwest, where Trelawny
goes to college. I think in a way, a lot of what he goes through when
he returns, has to do with my anxieties around what I imagined
could have been my fate had I moved back to Miami. At times I
thought I was writing a story collection and other times a novel, but
the spirit of both lives within the book. One of the reasons I went
with my publisher was because they had the idea that we didn’t
have to put a subtitle on the cover that would dictate how people
had to read it. I absolutely loved that notion, because to me… I was
building a cohesive world around this family in Miami, but I wanted
people to read it as they chose, and for the book to exist in that inbetween
space.”
As Trelawny tackles serious life issues, Escoffery’s powerful poeticism
begs the page to be turned and discover the humor deep
within dismay.
“In “Odd Jobs,” when we meet Trelawny, he has been devastated
by having been kicked out of his father’s house and the reality
of living out of his vehicle. We get a quick roundup in the first
paragraph of that particular story, of all his attempts to make
something of himself, and where we leave him at the end - is with
the oddest job of them all. The story begins with him saying it’s
this job that has saved him. Trelawny was on a trajectory towards
giving up, and the events that transpire on this day are what allow
him to seek out how to be a survivor. The next time we see him, he
has found full time work, and is really striving to put a roof back
over his head.”
Escoffery’s If I Survive You is a work of fiction, but incorporates a
time in the world that is very much real to
a large sector of the population and crucial
not to be forgotten.
“I spoke with a lot of Jamaicans that
had immigrated here during the seventies
and eighties, and stayed, including
my parents. There were some people
that moved back shortly after they gave
living here a go, and some who never left
Jamaica. Their stories were sort of similar
across the board, so I went with those
as fact - although to corroborate the
stories, I looked to the Jamaica Gleaner
(periodical) for the historical events. I
think what I’m most happy about, is the
chance to add to the historical record of
the Jamaican diaspora, and to document
what it was like to grow up in Miami during
the 1980’s and nineties - being able
to talk about events I’ve never read about
before. I know people who have had parallel
experiences to mine that may see
themselves in my writing, and I really
wanted to contribute that to literature.”
Jonathan’s knack for capturing the true essence of his characters
comes through often in their speech, with detailed colorful prose and
an astute recognition, that exposes each individual’s uniqueness.
“If I wrote some sections in what’s thought of as a “standardized
form of English,” it would have killed the authenticity of Topper
(Trelawny and Delano’s father). He’s largely telling himself
the story of his life up to a certain point, and it would have been
odd for him to translate it through someone else’s language. Not
all Jamaican’s talk like Topper, but I tried to weave in various registers
- even with Trelawny himself, as he is attempting to fit into
different spaces.”
The title of a book has the power to seize your attention and illuminate
personal perspective about what to expect inside. Escoffery
explains a bit of how he decided on the name, If I Survive You.
“I was re-reading the manuscript and the word survival kept
coming up, and I asked myself what does that mean… as the characters
are dealing with, in some cases, life or death situations. There’s
this family narrative and father/son dynamic that appears across
multiple characters, and I started thinking about Jamaican heritage,
particularly that of the second generation - and are they going to be
able to sustain that in the United States? What happens when the
older generation dies and we survive them… and all that remains
is what they leave behind? Surviving someone in that sense - describing
what Topper and Sanya are handing down to their sons… I
wanted the term ‘survive’ to be interpreted in different ways.”
Joining the ranks of pop culture icon status, viewers of HBO
Max’s And Just Like That may have caught a glimpse of Escoffery’s
book cradled under Sarah Jessica Parker’s arm.
“The moment was surreal… but I didn’t know that scene was going
to make it into the show until Season 2 premiered. It’s interesting
when you spend your time around other writers - sometimes
what we value isn’t always what the larger media consuming public
values, and so to have that crossover is phenomenal.”
“Under the Ackee Tree” proves to be a
vital section in the book and should be
poured over with care. Trelawny demonstrates
his frustration with having to
constantly defend his heritage and trying
to assimilate as an outsider, by acting out
in a rebellious and violent way at his father’s
home.
“Ackee and saltfish is Jamaica’s national
dish, and is important to Topper. Part of
his dream home that he builds in Florida
included the fruits of his homeland. He’s
only able to have this tree in his backyard
because his favorite son, Delano, becomes
an arborist and transplants an ackee tree
for him. So there’s this sense that Delano,
the one who was born in Jamaica, understands
the importance of lineage and culture.
There’s also this idea that Trelawny
doesn’t appreciate or understand the culture,
and since childhood says he doesn’t
even like the taste of ackee and saltfish.
I see the pivot points of attempting to
sever the ties with his birthright at the
end of “Under the Ackee Tree,” and the final paragraph of the book.
There’s an opportunity for hope and healing in that final moment,
and those two instances operate as pillars for the book. My own
father definitely became someone who was rooting for me, and although
he didn’t necessarily understand my journey with writing…
he was rooting for me more and more until he passed away.”
Jonathan is currently working on a second work of fiction set in
Miami Beach, and is slated to appear at the Brooklyn Caribbean Literary
Festival in early September.
“If, If I Survive You is the only book I ever write, I’ll still be proud
because it achieves what I set out to accomplish. Sometimes the adversity
you face, that often comes in the form of editorial rejection,
can make your career something you can be proud of, so I don’t encourage
people to rush to get their work out. Making your writing
truly exceptional and undeniable takes time and perspective. My
advice, if you can stand it - is patience.”
Escoffery’s triumph received American Short Fiction’s 2023
Constellation Award for a Story Collection, was longlisted for the
Booker Prize and the National Book Award, shortlisted for the
PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and the National Book Critics
Circle’s John Leonard Prize, and was named one of the best books
of 2022 by Entertainment Weekly, TIME, The New Yorker, People,
Oprah Daily, and Kirkus.
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
You don’t have to be a fashionista to adore the Pineapple
Grove boutique with the WYLD name. The square footage
may be petite, but their fashion footprint is huge.
With clothing and gift items carefully curated from around
the world, this museum-like shop caters to anyone who
cherishes the bright side of life.
Though some of the merchandise is rooted in fantasy it is artfully
based in reality and steeped in creativity. That’s why most people call
A Little Wyld their happy place.
And for good reason.
The walls, displays, and racks that surround this whimsical shop are
filled with color, glitter, shine and common sense as their outer glory.
This panorama of good taste has its origins in owners Skye and
Amanda. They search like historians for the newest and most creative
designers whose sole purpose is to make clothing and accessories
meet life’s most fulfilling passion – Joy.
Though they started out as a children’s boutique, the demand for
clothing, home décor, novelty gift items and accessories for grownups
is now part of the merchandise mix.
They also started selling wallpaper from UK based company Milton
& King. These eclectic yet fun wall coverings create spaces that
speak volumes about the creative capabilities of wallpaper. “We have
a lot of beautiful prints available, and we’ll have a swatch book. You
can order your wallpaper with your measurements with us and pick
it up here,” said Amanda.
They also carry designer clothing and accessories from House of
Perna (co-owner Amanda’s company) that are exclusive and designworthy.
There are fun children’s party dresses, sequin and bomber
jackets with matching pants, vegan leather and metallic pieces with
grown-up design sensibility.
Megan Fabulous is one new brand A Little Wyld carries that has
wonderful designer-inspired sportswear and tie dye tops with verve
and excitement. Their Grateful Dead tie dye tank tops have lace trim
and butterfly appliques. The designers at Megan Fabulous know that
children and adults love material matter that is fabulous and colorful.
A Little Wyld also specializes in novelty hair accessories, sunglasses
and jewelry that will make you see that creativity is limitless with
spontaneous sparks of color. They have neon pink high-top sequin
and satin sneakers from Lola & The Boys.
If you’re taking a family trip, A Little Wyld (whose owners both
have children) knows that little ones need to have fun to be fun.
That’s why they have a great assortment of art supplies, games and
toys that give children the ability to become skillful artisans by just
opening a kit or box. Everything is cleverly put in one place. They
even have posters with colored pencils to make wall art to hang in
their bedroom.
“We have something for everyone. Customers say they can spend
hours here because we have so many unique things to look at,” said Skye.
Karen couldn’t agree more.
“This place is a little gem, especially when you need a gift right
before a party! This adorable shop has beautiful things and a wonderful
staff! Everything is unique and thoughtful. I needed items for
a baby shower basket and had a hard time choosing there were so
many great options.”
There are bathing suits made from plastic water bottles and clothing
and accessories in recycled material, bamboo and natural fibers.
The newness and novelty of some brands in the store are due to their
overseas origin.
For kids on the go they have basketballs in colorful prints that will
score on and off the court. Also new are retro-inspired “super cool”
Banwood Bikes and helmets. You can order them now for the holidays.
Their colorful designer-inspired accessories from emerging de-
signers will rock your world as well. They have sunglasses, gemstone
geode necklaces, handbags, hats and gift items that you won’t see
anywhere else.
There are also dress-up items for Halloween, costumes, and assorted
hair accessories that speak their mind (in fashion lore). For
the little fashionista there are jewel trimmed “Mermaid in Training”
swim goggles.
A Little Wyld has novelty home décor items that make wonderful
gift items. There are swaddle blankets for newborns, travel pouches
for wet wipes, novelty soaps, bridal travel kits and a tension wind
down kit.
If you’re on your way to a party and only have 10 minutes to get a
hostess gift, stop by A Little Wyld. They will pick out something for
you and have it waiting. They also have an online store and expert
personal shoppers.
“Because it’s warm and people can go to the beach all year round
here, we try to buy things for locals and visitors alike.”
That is why they have novelty caftan-style dresses, wide-legged
pants, off-the-shoulder tops and a carefully curated collection of anything
you can imagine.
If you’re looking for a gift for the wine connoisseur in your life,
they have silver wine briefcases that only look great, but are definitely
a kitschy conversation piece.
A Little Wyld is a shoppers’ paradise. It’s also a place to see ones’
expectation of wonderful expanded and exposed to the depth and
breadth of fabulousness!
MOROCO ORTHODONTICS
Celebrating Its 25th
Anniversary in Delray Beach!
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
Although a lot has changed in 25 years, one thing that has
remained consistent is the outstanding reputation of Dr. Moroco
and her team, which now includes Dr. David Simon.
“I
want to say a million great things about Moroco Orthodontics!
I was immediately greeted by a very warm and friendly
front desk. At 55 my teeth were shifting, so I decided to get
Invisalign. I met with Dr. Moroco and I knew right away she was
going to help me. She has a great reputation and is simply the VERY
best out there,” said Sheri.
“As a family, we are so honored to be a patient of Moroco Orthodontics.
From the first call we were greeted with professionalism and a
caring representative. When we arrived, they knew my son by name
and welcomed us with open arms. Their technology is outstanding,
and their professionalism is like none other. We are truly excited to
get braces, and who says that? This was the best decision we’ve made
for our family and the health of my son’s teeth,” said Randye.
People not only rave about the doctors and the team but also
about their consistent investment in new technology that makes
the entire orthodontic experience more comfortable and efficient
for patients of all ages and in all parts of the world.
At Moroco Orthodontics, gone are the days of messy impressions,
painful, lengthy and frequent appointments that can often be associated
with past orthodontic treatments.
56 | september 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
New Patient Consultation
“Believe me! I have been working with patients in this area for
30 years and when my prior patients return for the orthodontic
care of their children and/or retreatment for themselves they are
amazed at the technology we have added to the practice to elevate
the patient experience and quality of care!” said Dr. Moroco.
Some of the most exciting and impactful technology investments
have included:
1) iTero scanners which eliminate the need for old-fashioned alginate
impressions while providing 3D views of the teeth for diagnostic
purposes.
2) 3D Xray images that provide a more accurate view of tooth/
jaw positions which leads to more accurate treatment plans and
treatment timing.
3) 3D Printers which provide detailed, accurate models of the patient’s
teeth on which to design and fabricate appliances.
4) Dental Monitoring TM, an AI-powered platform that allows
patients to use their smartphones for weekly scans of the appliances,
teeth and bite.
The reports from these scans are uploaded for the doctors to
review and can provide information that would not necessarily be
detected by the human eye and/or by the patient.
“The level of detail we read in these reports allows us to more
accurately plan the patient’s next ‘in person’ appointment thereby
eliminating the need for unnecessary visits to the office to check
on treatment progress,” said Dr. Simon. “In a nutshell, we have a
closer eye on treatment progress with less visits to the office. Also,
PATIENT USING NEW TECHNOLOGY DENTAL MONItorING

PATIENT USING NEW TECHNOLOGY DENTAL MONItorING
we catch and rectify developing problems sooner which improves
overall treatment time!”
Dental Monitoring has also made it possible to treat patients
who live in other parts of the world. “Florida is a wonderful
mix of people who choose to live here part time and
somewhere else part time. Combining Invisalign® and/or
braces with Dental Monitoring has expanded our ability to
treat these patients more effectively,” said Dr. Moroco.
No amount of technology, however, can replace Moroco
Orthodontics’ commitment to comprehensive and individualized
treatment planning by the doctors for patients.
“There is no ‘rubber stamp’ here. One of the things I love
most about my profession is that no 2 smiles are the same,”
said Dr. Moroco. “Every patient of every age presents with
different challenges. Dr. Simon and I take the necessary time
to review these issues along with the goals and concerns of
the patient to arrive at a plan to fit their needs. Then we apply
the appropriate technology to drive us toward those goals
in the most effective, efficient and comfortable way possible.”
Dr. Moroco moved to Delray Beach in 1993 after completing
her residency in Orthodontics and M.S. in Oral Biology at
Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Simon had a well-established and well-respected orthodontic
practice in Wellington for 20 years before joining
Dr. Moroco. “She has an amazing reputation for high quality
orthodontic treatment and a fantastic patient experience. It
seemed like a perfect match for me.”
And, indeed it is.
Congratulations to Moroco Orthodontics for their 25-year
unwavering dedication to their patients and the southeast FL
community at large!
Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament
28th Annual Mark Gerretson
Memorial Fishing Tournament
By the MGMFT Committee
The 28th Annual Mark Gerretson Memorial Fishing Tournament
was held on August 12, 2023. The Tournament Committee thanks
all of the donors, participants, and volunteers for ensuring that
the tournament was, once again, a tremendous success that will
benefit a number of local charities and local children.
58 | september 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
The tournament was started in 1994 by Mark Gerretson as the
Delray Beach Jaycees Fishing Tournament to raise money
for the Delray Police Department’s Kids and Cops program.
Mark ran the tournament for the next 11 years before he unexpectedly
passed away in 2005. His friends and family made a pact to
carry on the tournament in his name. In 2016, the tournament became
a 501(C) 3 non-profit Organization.
On Thursday, August 10th 2023, the Captain’s Meeting was held
at Hurricane Bar & Lounge at 640 E. Atlantic Ave, Delray Beach. The
owner, Paul Podlewski, and his staff did their normal outstanding
job taking care of everyone and making sure that the meeting was a
success. There were “High Dollar” raffle prizes given out which included
2 Engel Coolers 35 and 80 quart, a bicycle from Richwagen’s
Bike & Sport, a knife from WEX Gunworks handmade, 6 fishing rods
and reels from Tuppen’s, dive package Force-E, Costa sunglasses
Beach Optical, Bubba interchangeable filet knife set, 2 Wahoo lures,
4’ X 3’ painting, 50/50 raffle, $250 scratch off tickets and a Hospice
free boat entry for 2024. There were also many $2 raffle prizes
from local merchants such as; Tackle Crafters, Gulfstream Lures,
Nomad Surf Shop, Kluch Clothing, Sandie’s Dinner and more. We
had 16 boats registered for the tournament.
The weigh-in was once again held at the Palm Beach Yacht Center
at 7848 S. Federal Highway, Hypoluxo. The Yacht Center is a great
location with plenty of parking for cars and docking for boats, as
well as excellent facilities for weighing in and for people to mingle
while participating in the High $ raffles, weigh- in, and the award
ceremonies. The Kiwanas provided a food truck with excellent food
and drinks including hot dogs, sausages, beer and sodas.
The trophies were made by Jim McGrath. There were a fair
number of fish brought to the docks. “Miss Amy” won biggest fish
with a 24.2 lb. Kingfish. “Miss Amy” also won the largest Dolphin
a 9.2 lb. worth $1000. “The Boat” won largest Kingfish a 20.4 lb.
worth $1000. “Hookless” won Lady Angler an 18 lb. Kingfish. “Bad
Attitude” won the mystery fish with a 7.6 lb. Blackfin tuna which
worth $200 and some nice sushi. Madelyn Riseley won the Family
Fun fish award and $200. Unfortunately, there was no Wahoo or
trifecta to be awarded. Trifecta will roll over to next year’s tournament
at $2,000.
We would like to thank all the participants, volunteers, and the
donors for another successful year which allows us to provide continued
support in giving back to our community and allowing us
to carry on Mark’s legacy. The organizations that will benefit from
this tournament include: Delray Chamber Education Fund (Delray
Reads), Roots & Wings, Achievement Center, Plumosa, Boys and
Girls Clubs, CROS Ministries, Family Promise, Delray Citizens for
Delray Police, and High School Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
(Both College and Trades). You make all of this possible and help us
to make a big Difference.
We are a 501(C) 3 non-profit organization run solely by volunteers
who donate their time and energy to make this charitable
tournament possible. We look forward to seeing you at the 29th
Annual Tournament in 2024.
LINDSEY MYGATT AND CurtIS BENNETT
Real Estate Pros To The Max
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
If Lindsey Mygatt and Curtis
Bennett were ball players, they
would be on the “All Star” Team.
The dynamic duo have been on the fast track in real estate
sales since they entered the South Florida real estate market.
Their reputation is stellar and they are founds of “The
South Ocean Group” at Coldwell Banker Realty in Delray.
The two are International President’s Elite winners, placing
them in the top 2% of the company worldwide.
They also earned the Coldwell Banker Rising Star Award in SE
Florida and were named one of the “top 30 Real Estate Agents
Under the age of 30.”
The reason for all the accolades bestowed upon them is their
“can do” attitude, relentlessly striving to surpass client satisfaction
and their customer-centric approach.
“We strive to provide ‘white glove’ customer service to our clients
throughout the whole process and well after the sale. We are
proactive and have found in today’s market, that is essential. We
don’t stop until we find our clients the perfect home.”
You bet they do. Just ask Rebecca about their determination and
relentless drive toward perfection.
60 | september 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
“Lindsey and Curtis are the best in the business! They were so
patient helping us find our dream home. They were always available
and showed us everything to make sure we found the perfect
house. They are by your side the entire process. If you’re looking
for a new home, look no further for realtors than this amazing
duo. They make your real estate dreams come true.”
When clients ask them to find their perfect home, and nothing
seems available, Lindsey and Curtis work hard to go out and find
it. This is one of their secret sauces. They don’t wait for the right
home to appear; they create what the client wants.
Lindsey and Curtis are also marketing pros. That is one reason
they talk less and sell more. ““Our marketing plans are sophisticated
when marketing our clients’ homes”
They strive to make the entire real estate process efficient,
successful, stress-free and fun for clients. This is accomplished
through their constant communication and being on top of the
process from start to finish.
“We gain our clients’ trust and confidence with our in-depth
market knowledge, full-service approach, and passion for helping
them meet their real estate goals, big or small.”
Their stellar reputation in the community is due to their motto:
“No one will work harder than The South Ocean Group to make
your real estate goals a reality.”
The by-product of this attention to detail, and care for client’s,
is friendship. It’s hard not to be in awe of this young couple who
are charming and bright, kind-hearted, and hard-working.
Many of their clients say that Lindsey and Curtis are not only
COPYRIGHTED

their trusted realtors, but also friends. “The by-product of this attention
to detail, and care for clients is friendship.”
The reason for all the accolades beaming their way is due to passion,
not only for real estate, but for their clients and Delray Beach.
The two live in Delray, play in Delray and think the sun sets a
little brighter on the streets of Delray (and nearby areas).
You will see them ‘golf-carting’ around Delray Beach, whether
showing property, traveling on A1A at sunrise, (before a busy
day) or on their way to dinner on Atlantic Avenue.
This deep love of the real estate industry – and their desire to
be the best - comes naturally to the pair that have a real estate
family heritage. Lindsey grew up learning the trade from her father,
who has been in real estate business for 35 years (25 with
Coldwell Banker Realty). Curtis’ history also includes real estate
royalty – his grandfather was a successful real estate developer
in Connecticut.
But it is not a generational consideration that has spurred them
to climb the ladder toward success, it is sheer joy at the art of selling
real estate.
“We were born to do this!”
They are also bullish on its lasting inherent value.
“Iconic markets like Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Palm Beach
are prime locations that can stand the test of time through any market
change. Having knowledgeable local agents who are dedicated,
passionate and creative with a go-getter attitude is critical today.”
Both Lindsey and Curtis are adamant that Delray Beach is an
idyllic place to work, live and play. You may have seen their weekly
social media feature called “What’s Happening in Delray Beach.”
It’s natural, authentic and a sparkling online roundup of weekly
activities and events happening in downtown. “We really enjoy
sharing our favorite local restaurants, shops and events happening
around town.”
They also have an Oprah-esque list of favorite Delray Beach
things to-do.
Their latest “Taste of the Town” Roundup and favorite local hot
spots are: Palm Trail Grill, CASA L’ACQUA, the Grove and City Oyster.
Captain Clay’s Seafood is their favorite place to buy fresh seafood.
And, on Saturday mornings (when not showing real estate)
the couple enjoy jumping on their golf cart and shopping at the
Delray Green Market for fresh food.
They also frequent the Shops at the Seagate Hotel and enjoy
grabbing a quick coffee between showings at the two new coffee
shop in town, Seed Coffee & Foxtail Coffee.
Whether you’re looking to buy or sell, or are an out-of-state
buyer, Lindsey and Curtis would love to be part of your homebuying,
selling, or investing journey!
of Stamm Development Group
and Gregg Rego of City Abstract
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
It’s been almost three years since Stamm Development
Group, a private real estate development company, expanded
from their home base in Philadelphia to South Florida.
They came with both exciting and ambitious plans to build
luxury high-end single-family homes and town-homes in
Delray Beach; and have done just that.
Within this ambitious and solidly successful pedigree, Stamm
Development Group has once again expanded services for their
clients through a joint venture with Mike Stamm of Stamm
Development Group and Gregg Rego of City Abstract in opening a
title and settlement services company, Coastal Abstract and Title
Agent, LLC (Coastal Abstract).
Title work can be one of the most important and nuanced parts
of a real estate transaction. Title insurance protects home buyers
against covered title defects, such as a previous owner’s debt,
liens, and other claims of ownership. It’s an insurance policy that
protects against past problems; other insurances usually deal
with future risks.
Title insurance coverage also gives homeowners peace of mind
in the knowledge that they’ll be excused from legal disputes tied to
the property prior to their ownership.
Stamm explains having a title team at his buyer’s disposal expands
Stamm Development Group’s client service promise. Stamm
has always been impressed when working in the Philadelphia market
with Gregg Rego’s success and influence at City Abstract, one of
the largest and most successful Pennsylvania and New Jersey Title
Companies – which is why he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to
expand upon the success with Gregg and create their joint title
venture, Coastal Abstract.
“Together we are bringing a new approach to title insurance in
South Florida. We have created a brand that is normally a commodity,
but our service is top of the line. We provide a luxury customeroriented
approach,” said Stamm.
Gregg explains, “We are investing in our brand and infrastructure
and are excited to be the go-to title company and resource for
luxury home transactions in the South Florida area – we are able to
offer a high level of experience at Coastal Abstract and have already
built a solid repertoire with our customers, we are hands on, and,
deliver a commoditized product that is different”.
Mike and Gregg have hired a full-time staff with decades of Florida
title insurance experience to join the team at Coastal Abstract.
Coastal Abstract began transacting in August of 2022 and in one
short year, have handled title work and settlements for an impressive
nearly $200 million in real estate sales and loan originations.
Stamm and Rego are both men who people trust and believe. When
they do something, they do it the right way, with a lot of thought
and professional expertise. That is why the collaboration is so exciting
for the two of them to be bringing this title company to the
Florida market.
“We are giving them our influence and connection to prominent
brokerages in South Florida. That is why our clients are using
Coastal Abstract and Title .”
One of their clients, Luxury Properties & New Construction
Specialist Jennifer Kilpatrick, CLHMS has worked with Coastal
Abstract and has a lot to say about their expertise and ability to
outshine the competition.
“I’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Coastal Abstract
for several of my recent successful closings. Their dedication to
providing seamless and efficient services has impressed me. The
team at Coastal Abstract is not only incredibly knowledgeable, but
they also prioritize clear communication and attention to even the
Coastal AbstrACt office
smallest details - which can make a real difference for all parties
involved,” said top performing realtor Kilpatrick.
When a problem arose, Kilpatrick said, there was swift communication
and professionalism and all (and any wrinkles) were
ironed out easily.
“As a partner in the industry - based on the successful closings we
have had - I happily recommend them to future clients looking for
incredible support and a smooth experience. As a seasoned real estate
professional in Delray Beach, I’ve enjoyed working with Mia Ortiz
(branch manager) and her team at Coastal Abstract and Title Company.”
Because of Gregg and City Abstract’s relationship’s, Coastal Abstract
writes policies with four of the largest title insurance underwriters.
“Using title professionals is important for most real estate
deals and is what we do full time.”
All of their clients and customers at Coastal Abstract have access
to an amazing set of resources giving full undivided attention,
proper title insurance, and due process is in order.
Coastal Abstract has officially opened their doors in Delray at
900 East Atlantic Avenue – Suite 20.
Stamm infiltrated South Florida three years ago with his word
being his guarantee. And over those three years, his homes have
shown their brilliance of both architecture and integrity. He stands
proudly behind Coastal Abstract for another brilliant business
brought to the South Florida market.
Gregg Rego is thrilled about his affiliation with Coastal Abstract.
“We value the power of relationships and believe in building strong
connections; when you work with us, you can count on open communication,
trust and a genuine commitment to your success.”
Though Coastal Abstract is located in Delray Beach they can close
anywhere in the State of Florida. With unmatched expertise and
commitment to title services, Coastal Abstract is taking the South
Florida market by storm by bringing a unique flare and a personalized
approach to your real estate settlement services.
“We understand the importance of a smooth and seamless closing
process. With this in mind, our team can navigate the complexities
of real estate transactions with ease, ensuring that our clients’
interests are protected every step of the way.”
Tackle Hunger Cereal Drive
During the Florida Atlantic
University vs. Ohio Football Game
Boca Helping Hands (BHH), in collaboration with Florida Atlantic University
Athletics and Cereal4All, for the third year in a row, will commemorate
September’s Hunger Action Month by hosting a Tackle Hunger Cereal
Drive during the Florida Atlantic University vs. Ohio football game.
The game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6:00 pm at
Boca Raton, FL 33431. Those who donate one or more cereal
boxes will get a free ticket to the game. Unopened cereal boxes
can be dropped at the stadium (Gate 1) on game day.
“This is a great way to see your favorite football team play while
helping to fight hunger in our community,” said Greg Hazle, Executive
Director of Boca Helping Hands. “Cereal is one of the least
donated items to food banks across the country, which means underserved
kids and families do not always get to start their day
with a nutritious breakfast.”
Nonprofit Cereal4All was started by twin brothers Jett and Luke
Justin of Boca Raton, now 15 years old. After volunteering at Boca
Helping Hands with their parents, Jett and Luke organized their
first cereal drive for BHH at their school in 2016 when they were
just eight years old. The boys have since expanded the program
to 15 schools in Palm Beach County as well as schools in Arizona,
Honoring Delray Beach Civil Rights Icon
Yvonne Lee Odom
Last month, the City Commission honored the legacy of local
civil rights icon, Yvonne Lee Odom, by proclaiming August 8th as
“Back to School Day” in our city, in recognition of her work to end
segregation in public schools. Her journey as a trailblazer started
when she was a high school student. On September 28, 1961, then
15-year-old Odom became the first Black student to walk through
the doors of Seacrest High School in Delray Beach.
The “Back to School Day” proclamation in her honor seeks to
continue Odom’s work by encouraging all residents, schools, businesses,
and community organizations to join in recognizing the
need for safe, equitable, and inclusive educational opportunities
for students.
Odom is truly a pillar in our community, having served as a
teacher for 45 years and as a community activist. She is also the
grandmother of tennis pro Coco Gauff. To learn more about Yvonne
Lee Odom and her legacy, visit https://www.delraybeachfl.gov/.
LABOR DAY
The History
Behind
This All
American
Holiday
The labor holiday is
more than BBQs
and time to stop
wearing white
clothing.
COPYRIGHTED
Labor Day is the unofficial end to the summer season.
Up north the leaves begin to turn, here – our
seasonal residents return, and the temperatures
cools a bit. Labor Day is always celebrated on the first
Monday of September. This year, Labor Day is September
4, 2023.
Why do we celebrate Labor Day?
The idea of Labor Day emerged in the late 19th century
out of the organized labor movements. In September
1882, unions in New York decided to throw themselves
a parade to celebrate unions as a concept and
the hard-working people comprising them.
Even though workers had to give up a day’s pay to
attend, more than 20,000 people showed up to the parade.
It was a celebration of historic proportions.
Soon, unions in other states started having September
parades, and within five years, several states declared
“Labor Day” official state holidays. In 1894, 12
years after the first labor parade in New York, President
Grover Cleveland signed an act establishing Labor
Day as a federal holiday on the first Monday of every
September.
How do we celebrate Labor Day now?
While some towns still have Labor Day parades similar
to the original Labor Day festivities of the 19th century,
the general focus of the holiday has shifted more
toward celebrating the end of summer. Cookouts and
pool parties are much more in favor now than marching
bands and union speeches. And Labor Day is usually
a busy time for travel.
Still, the original spirit of honoring the work force remains,
and Labor Day is a paid holiday for most American
workers. According to the U.S. Travel Association,
more than half of all working Americans don’t use all
of their paid vacation days. In a country that works so
much, having a day off is an ideal way to celebrate and
recharge for the fall. That, and amazing sales!
When do Labor Day sales start?
Another tradition of Labor Day in America is the
discounts! Labor Day is on Monday, September 5, but
Labor Day sales usually start the weekend before and,
in some cases, up to a week in advance. If you’re in the
market for something large like a kitchen appliance, a
washer/dryer, or a mattress, Labor Day is an excellent
time to go shopping because big ticket items often get
the most notable discounts around this time of year.
Can you wear white after Labor Day?
Wearing white after Labor Day has long been considered
a fashion faux pas. However, no one is certain
where the rule “you cannot wear white after Labor
Day” came from.
Some fashion historians say it was pure classist snobbery
— a social more set in place by the American nouveau
riche as a way to easily denote who was wealthy
and who wasn’t, because people with less money could
not afford seasonal clothes. Others say that not wearing
white after Labor Day simply came about because
Labor Day marked the end of summer and white was
traditionally thought of as summer-wear. As the weather
turned colder, people began to favor darker clothing,
like gray sweaters and dark navy suits.
Over time this trend became fashion tradition. Despite
what fashionistas might say, it’s not a hard and
fast rule. Fashion icon Coco Chanel wore white yearround,
so there’s no reason not to wear your favorite
white clothes anytime you please!
8 Great Places to Visit
in the UK, After London
By linda brown
If you’re planning a trip to the UK, chances are you’re heading to London,
but maybe no further. The buzzing metropolis draws millions of visitors
every year, and many people feel it offers all they could want. But the UK
is packed with other amazing places beyond London, each unique in some
special way, so make sure you don’t miss out. Here are eight highlights
around the country, for starters:
1. Cornwall & Devon
These two counties are in the southwest of England and are
one of Britain’s most popular tourist areas. Offering such variety
with their long sandy beaches, inlets, moorland, hills
and valleys. The North Atlantic coastline is popular with surfers
and the hiking is great! The South Coast Path is a 630-mile hiking
trail and follows this most dramatic of English coasts, round Land’s
End and the Lizard point, respectively the most westerly and most
southerly points in England.
2. Elegant Bath
The graceful, little city of Bath makes a refreshing antidote to
London. Take a stroll around the famous Royal Crescent, visit
the historic Roman Baths and sip the curative spring water
in the elegant, old Pump Room. You can do your gift shopping in
the tiny stalls that adorn the river bridge. Stay until nightfall and
witness the magical floodlights - there’s a fairytale element to Bath.
COPYRIGHTED
3, The Cotswolds
A
little further north, you will encounter the rolling farmland
of the Cotswolds, where the quaint, little stone cottages and
Norman churches will take you back through the centuries.

Stop off in a sleepy, old village, such as Bibury, and walk around the
amazingly preserved Roman villa near Chedworth. You’ll find plenty
of classy eating places and craft shops in this charming, “olde
worlde” region.
4. The Welsh mining valleys
There’s a harsh side to British history alongside the fairytale
one, and you’ll feel it in the old mining valleys of South Wales.
Drive over the stark mountains and view the rows of workers’
cottages, now painted in bright colors. Take the elevator down
The Big Pit and learn how tough life used to be for the coalminers.
Then you could step even further back through history with a roam
around Caerphilly Castle - but mind those spooky, spiral staircases.
5. Vibrant Manchester
Visit the beating heart of the north of England. You’ll feel the
buzz of Manchester life as soon as you arrive. Take a tram
ride around town and check out the latest events at the
many theatres and concert halls. You’ll find plenty of stand-up comedy
and other fun shows in Manchester, and plenty of sport, too, as
well as top-notch culture.
6. The Lake District
Around the coastline from Manchester, you will find the romantic,
hidden world of The Lake District. Climb the dramatic
mountains and take a boat trip around beautiful Lake Windermere,
the largest of the sixteen gleaming waters. Then you can ride
through the magical scenery on a splendid, vintage steam train.
7. Historic Edinburgh
Venture over the rugged border of Scotland - scene of many
a historic battle - and head north to Edinburgh for another
great experience. With the imposing castle on its great rock
and bagpipe music in the air, you will know you’ve arrived. How
about donning a kilt and joining in a Scottish dance reel? You would
certainly deserve a stick of delicious “Edinburgh Rock” after that.
8. York and the Yorkshire Dales
As you head back south to London, drop in on the ancient city
of York. Step inside the resplendent York Minster, browse
the little shops in the old Shambles district, then join an after-dark
ghost-walk around the twisty, cobbled streets. Take a drive
over Yorkshire’s wild moors and pretty dales, and make sure you
try all the local cakes, pies, and ales on your way through.
There are plenty more special places to see while you’re over in
Britain, not just in these parts but across the water in Ireland, too.
Browse the sightseeing websites and ask fellow travelers for their
recommendations. There is something for everyone in the UK.
Joycelyn Patrick
regulars | city people
If you were to make up a story about a young girl who
grew up to embody God’s commandments, you would
need more than 10 to describe Joycelyn Patrick.
A Rarified World of Life, Love
and Commitment To Delray Beach
The born and bred Delray Beach native flows
easily through life determined to make a difference.
Her head knows what is going on, and
her heart is the translucent wrapping paper that ties
it all together.
If you haven’t heard the name Joycelyn Patrick
there’s a good reason. Her deeds do not make headlines
in the paper, not does she announce her accomplishments
with press releases or mailings.
Instead, Patrick navigates the streets of Delray
Beach (and non-profit organizations) as a fine weaver
would a tapestry of gold. Her Southern charm invites
you in, and her bold dynamic determination assures
you that things will get done just as they should.
Patrick was raised by parents (and grandparents)
who imbibed good citizenship, hard work and an altruistic
underpinning to help others.
That legacy is the meaning and motion of her life.
She has lived in the same house that she grew up in
and remembers when Delray Beach was a tiny dot on
the huge terrain of South Florida.
“I was born and raised at a time when people in
Delray were close, compassionate and cared for each
other. There was also a strong sense of community.”
That sense of community (and compassion for
neighbors) may not be the overriding creed in our
modern world, but to Patrick it is everything. That’s
the reason this retired businesswoman has her stakes
in the ground where they matter most.
She is the President of the GFWC Woman’s Club
of Delray Beach, the oldest charitable organization
in the city. The club, established in 1902, donates to
non-profit organizations that help women and youth
in the city. They recently created little libraries called
“Books in the Park.”
Patrick admits that she likes to break the glass
ceiling in her own way. And break it she does. She is
the first black president of the GFWC Woman’s Club
of Delray.
She also got a proclamation for the 121-year-old
woman’s club that she felt deserved recognition. On
August 16th, 2022 the GFWC Woman’s Club of Delray
Beach received a proclamation from the mayor and
the City Commission.
As Maya Angelou has said, “If you don’t know where
you’ve come from, you don’t know where you’re going.”
For Patrick these words are the GPS imprint of
her life. Her Delray Beach history is her legacy and
her joy. It’s engraved on her heart and is the headlight
for her merger with greatness.
“One of the reasons I’m so involved is because I
believe it’s important to maintain that sense of community
I grew up with in Delray. It is also my civic
duty to give back to the community that has given
me so much.”
Patrick is a woman of her word.
She is the Moderator of the Trustee Council (and
parishioner) at the Church of the Palms in Delray
Beach. She has participated in the “Delray Reads” initiative
since its inception, and assists the 2nd graders
a few days a week at S.D. Spady Elementary School.
Spady is where she, her siblings, and her children
attended. It is also where her beloved eight-year-old
granddaughter Xandria goes now.
Patrick, who believes that literacy is of utmost importance,
is on the board of the educational non-profit
Roots and Wings. She was on the Healthier Delray
Steering Committee and Governance Board, and was
President of the Delray Beach Sunrise Rotary Club.
Patrick also served on the city’s Planning and Zoning
Board and was President of the West Atlantic Avenue
Redevelopment Coalition.
She has also been on the planning committee
of the Delray Beach Police Department’s National
Night Out event.
Despite all the activities and newness that surrounds
Delray Beach, Patrick delights in the small
town she grew up in. “Delray was always a quaint
quiet town. Then, all of a sudden… boom…everything
is busy and there are people everywhere.”
But Patrick doesn’t keep this treasure to herself.
She invites others to join her. Cheryl Haywood is one
of them.
“I moved to Delray in 2014 and Joycelyn took me
under her wing. She has become a trusted friend and
mentor. I can talk to her about anything without judgment.
I’m blessed to have her in my life.”
Nonjudgement and giving without strings is only
part of the Patrick family creed. Her mother took food
and clothing to families in need in Delray Beach and
their daughter follows precisely in their footprints.
Her father Charles owned the La France Hotel ( a
much.
haven for those barred from other hotels) and her mother
Gertrude owned a barbershop in town. Her grandmother
also had an entrepreneurial spirit and sold baked goods.
Her mother was an exemplary role model that Patrick extols
to this day. “My mother was loving and non-judgmental.
She made sure we all felt loved and taken care of. You could
feel that love; it was in her cooking and our house.”
You could say the same thing about Patrick. She loves
to cook and everyone looks up to her with admiration
and respect. Her reputation is one of kindness and capability,
boldness and bravery.
“Joycelyn is a volunteer leader that takes to heart what
the mission of the organization is. She is unflappable, dependable
and committed. She’s also a very pleasant person
and a good leader,” said Joyce Warner of the Woman’s Club.
If you mention the name Joycelyn Patrick you will hear
adjectives and admiration for her sturdiness and selflessness.
And, her faith.
“Joycelyn finds time to raise her grand baby, runs a viable
nonprofit organization, remains very active in her
church, attends every event you invite her to, and still advocates
for residents in her community. I call her the unofficial
mayor of Delray Beach. She is a leader who has her
pulse on the community,” said C. Ron Allen of KOP Mentoring
Network.
Reverand Todd Petty, Pastor of Church of the Palms Delray
Beach also has a front row seat to the wonders of this
tall commanding woman who glides through life with a
smile and a plan.
“I admire Joycelyn for many reasons, as a leader in our
church and the community. I also admire her for being an
outstanding grandmother.”
Petty is also impressed with Patrick’s leadership role,
her intuitiveness, patience and kindness. “She knows everybody.
When I moved here people said she could be
mayor, she’s so well known.”
You bet she is.
“I have lived in my childhood home my entire life. I am
called, ‘the bird who never left the nest.’ I went to Spady
Elementary School, Delray Junior High and Atlantic High
School.”
That extended nest includes her eight siblings, four children
and seven grandchildren. One of the lights of her life
is her youngest grandchild Xandria, who she takes to museums
and educational venues near and far.
Patrick is quite vocal about enjoying the company of
‘good people doing good things.’ She wears bold colorful
glasses, and moves her hands around as if she was conducting
a symphony when she talks. Yet you can feel her
steady yet calm demeanor and the gentility of her history.
There is no need to worry about losing the rich history
of Delray Beach Community when Patrick is around. Her
elegance, strength and purpose has added gravitas to everything
she touches.
Ted Hoskinson, founder of Roots and Wings agrees.
“Joycelyn lights up any room she walks into, and exudes
honesty and transparency. You know exactly where
she stands! Her love for this City is obvious and her love
of education and our schools is obvious! Her love of living
life to the fullest is obvious!”
2 tblspoons unsalted butter, plus more for the dish
two ways to prepare
broccoli’s cousin.
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 head cauliflower
1½ cups plain Greek yogurt
1 lime, zested and juiced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon cumin
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon curry powder
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 400° and lightly grease a
small baking sheet with vegetable oil. Set aside.
Trim the base of the cauliflower to remove any
green leaves and the woody stem.
In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt with the
lime zest and juice, chili powder, cumin, garlic
powder, curry powder, salt and pepper.
Dunk the cauliflower into the bowl and use a
brush or your hands to smear the marinade evenly
over its surface. (Excess marinade can be stored
in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up
to three days and used with meat, fish or other
veggies.)
Place the cauliflower on the prepared baking
sheet and roast until the surface is dry and lightly
browned, 30 to 40 minutes. The marinade will
make a crust on the surface of the cauliflower.
Let the cauliflower cool for 10 minutes before
cutting it into.
Buffalo Cauliflower
Ingredients:
Olive Oil cooking spray
3/4 cup baking flour
1 cup water
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste
2 heads of cauliflower, cut into bite size pieces
2 table spoons butter
1/2 cup Franks Red Hot Buffalo Sauce
1 teaspoon honey
Directions:
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Lightly grease a baking
sheet with cooking spray.
together in a bowl with a whisk until batter is
smooth and a bit runny. Add cauliflower to batter
and mix until cauliflower is coated. spread onto
baking sheet.
Bake in the preheated oven until lightly browned,
20-25 minutes.
Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
Remove saucepan from heat and stir in hot sauce
and honey into butter until smooth. Brush hot
sauce mixture over each piece of cauliflower until
all mixture is used.
Bake until cauliflower is browned, about 10 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cauliflower cool
10-15 minutes.
Blueberries are in season
- Top off your summer
get togethers with this
tasty fruit. A simple boozy
blueberry sauce makes
this a grown up treat!
Blueberry Gin
Sundaes
Ingredients:
1 cup of fresh blueberries
1/3 cup Gin
1 pint vanilla ice cream
4 waffle bowls
Mint for garnish
Directions:
In a small saucepan combine blueberries and Gin.
Simmer, stirring frequently until berries burst
let cool.
Divide one pint of ice cream among 4 bowls evenly
and top with sauce. Garnish with mint.
Lemons are one of my
favorite fruits! I use it in
vineagrettes, drinks, and
desserts. Here’s one of
my favorite ways to enjoy
this sweet tart fruit.
Lemon Garlic Pasta
for a complete meal!
Ingredients:
1 lb angel hair spaghetti
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Finely grated zest from 2 lemons
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
COPYRIGHTED
Directions:
Cook pasta in a 6-quart pot of boiling salted water
until al dente. Reserve 1 cup cooking water and
drain pasta in a colander.
While pasta is boiling, cook garlic and red pepper
flakes (to taste) in oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet
over moderate heat, stirring, until garlic is golden,
about 5 minutes. Stir in zest, then juice, salt,
pepper, and 1/2 cup reserved cooking water and
bring to a simmer.
Toss pasta in sauce with parsley. (Add more cooking
water if pasta seems dry.)
BY Bill Piechocki
Are My Pet’s Hormones Balanced?
Hormones and minerals are essential building blocks for a
healthier body. We hear about hormone issues in humans
daily and see the plethora of drugs that are marketed for
these issues. Your pets suffer from these same issues for a number
of reasons that are sometimes caused by veterinarian recommended
treatments and procedures. Are you surprised?
To understand the issues that are created, we can start with disease,
physical issues and behavior. Any time one’s hormones are out of balance,
it cascades into all levels of mineral imbalances which we understand
affects the whole body of all creatures including humans. The
total endocrine system is affected by a single deficiency or imbalance.
Let’s first look at the procedures that affect the hormone imbalance.
We are led to believe that unless we “fix” our pets, they “will suffer
and die from various cancers”. Nothing is further from the truth.
Removing those organs causes the whole endocrine system to work
harder to compensate for the missing body parts. Hence, as young as
sometimes only months old, the pets’ body is already out of balance,
challenged and damaged when it is in the process of developing and
properly growing. This can cause physical deformities that challenge
this growing body. It is true that you won’t get prostrate or uterine
cancer if they are removed, Hypothetically, what if we removed the
lungs in order to prevent lung cancer? This is not a good reason to do
any of these procedures. They have lifelong consequences including
thyroid issues.
So now let’s look at the overwhelming number of chemical interventions
as well. Vaccines, worming, preventative treatments, preservatives,
flavors, synthetical hormones, vitamins, minerals and other
supplements that are recommended by the poly-pharma medical industry.
ALL of these products influence the overall health and balance
of our pets. If a single exposure to any of these can influence the body,
what is the result of this plethora of assaults that start at the beginning
of this pets’ life.
Over time, we can handle some of these vaccines, the worming, preventative
treatments, preservatives, flavors, synthetical hormones, vitamins,
minerals and other supplements contaminations of the body
with specific detoxification foods and processes. It does take time because
we need the body to replace the contaminated cells with new,
healthy cells. We know different cells grow at various times and rates
so we must be patient.
We have quite a different challenge whenever we remove any body
part for any reason. The systems of the body must and do have to alter
normal function to compensate for the missing parts. It is amazing
that the living body is able to even do this!
To answer, we have whole food solutions that can support the body
and the organs challenged to fight this bodily assault. We have both
real food and herbal food solutions that can support your pet or in
dealing with these challenges, Our message is available here, and
Rise of the Underdog:
Study Reveals Remarkable Shift
Towards Adoption Of Shelter Dogs
Over Purebred Purchases in Florida
In the past, the sight of purebred dogs like Dachshunds, Boston
Terriers, and French Bulldogs was common in American neighborhoods.
However, recently a notable shift in consumers’ preferences has steered
away from these purebreds despite their previous popularity.
For some, the exorbitant cost of purebred dogs, which can
reach up to $10,000 for breeds such as Rottweilers and Chow
Chows, is a considerable deterrent. For others, the concern is
over health issues commonly associated with
purebreds. English Bulldogs and Pugs, for
instance, are often plagued with respiratory
problems. Also, many individuals also
feel a moral obligation to provide homes to
shelter dogs.
Bone Voyage Dog Rescue recently conducted
a study revealing a significant shift towards adopting
shelter dogs over purchasing purebreds from
breeders. A survey of 3,000 potential dog owners
in Florida revealed that an impressive 45% of them
expressed an intent to adopt from shelters, marking
a 5% swing towards possible shelter dog ownership
when contrasted with older data from the
Humane Society of the United States, which indicated
that 40% of pet dogs in households were
previously shelter dogs.
“This increasing trend towards shelter
dog adoption promises substantial improvements
in the welfare of homeless
animals. The shift could lead to a decrease
in the number of dogs in shelters,
as more are adopted,” says Annette
Thompson, Executive Director
of Bone Voyage Dog Rescue, when
commenting on the study.
The rising trend of shelter dog
adoption holds considerable potential
for improving animal welfare
in the US. This shift could have
multi-faceted benefits, creating a
ripple effect that extends beyond the
lives of the individual dogs adopted.
Decreasing the number of dogs residing in shelters is a primary
benefit. With more dogs finding homes, the overall population
in shelters would shrink. Consequently, shelters would have
more resources available per animal, including space,
staff attention, and medical care. This shift
would result in better living conditions
for the remaining animals while reducing
the strain on shelter resources.
Secondly, an increase
in the adoption of shelter
dogs could influence the
supply-demand dynamics
of the pet industry. If consumers
choose adoption over
purchasing from breeders, it
might discourage unethical breeding practices,
including those prevalent in puppy
mills. This change would further contribute
to enhancing animal welfare on a larger
scale.
Finally, each adopted dog’s individual
quality of life would likely see significant
improvements. Home environments
typically offer more space,
personal attention, and stability than
shelters. Adopted dogs receive consistent
care, training, and socialization
opportunities, leading to better
physical health and behavioral outcomes.
This transformation enriches
the adopted dog’s life and can bring
immeasurable joy and companionship
to the family adopting.
