from the
editor
Joyful
June!
It’s crazy to believe but we are nearly halfway through
2023! Time flies when you’re hanging out in the
‘Most Fun Small Town’…
As the weather warms up, our town tends to quieten
down but that doesn’t mean its not a busy month.
Schools Out For Summer, so its always a busy time for those
people with kids. Beach time, summer camps, day trips and
keeping the little ones happy is a fulltime job! Don’t forget to
invest in some ‘adult time’ and enjoy yourself at one of our many
bars, spas, and restaurants. Keeping it local at this time of year is
appreciated by all our vendors.
Let’s hope it’s not a busy time for hurricanes. June 1st is the
start of hurricane season, so if you’re new to the state or unsure of
what preparations to make, read our article in this month’s issue.
Sunday, June 18th is Father’s Day! This month we give ideas to
spoil that special person in your life. It might be fishing,
scuba diving, tennis, or simple chillaxing. Whatever
you choose, we’ve got some super ideas to help
make his day as special as he is.
The following day, June 19th, we celebrate
Juneteenth National Independence Day.
It celebrates the freedom of slavery in the
United States and has been observed by
African Americans for more than 150 years.
Our City Person this month is the welltraveled
and current President and CEO of
the Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce,
Stephanie Immelman.
See you next month when summer
vibes will be in full swing!
of young people in the performing
arts.
“What is striking about 13 is that it conveys
emotions and insecurities that not
only teenagers relate to – but that everyone
does,” Langel says. “At its core, it’s a show
about the raw vulnerability that comes
with being true to yourself – something
that resonates with people of all ages.”
Evan Goldman has it all: He’s popular, has
Jonathan Jacknow, Leah Steiner, and Kane Quiles
greatest city - New York. But when his parents’
divorce, he’s forced to move with his
Mom…to Indiana. Uprooted from his old
life, he must maneuver his way through the
minefield of high school to become part of
the ‘in’ crowd.
Featuring a rock score by celebrated
composer Jason Robert Brown, 13 will be
performed by an astonishing cast of young
posh properties
BY Janey Bass
My name is Janey Bass. I have been a Delray Beach
resident for 30 years and I credit my success to the
blessing of many solid friendships and good people
that have been put in my path along the way. Prior to real
estate, I worked in interior design for 15 years owning a
successful business.
While juggling a business, I had the unique challenge of
raising three children as a single mom. Being dedicated, loyal
and ambitious are second nature to me. They are God’s gifts
that He has equipped me with to get the job done! Working
towards client’s goals daily, while being consistently inspired
by my children, are the secrets to my success.
Understanding how to help clients navigate the buying and
selling process is how I became one of Posh Properties Top
10 Agents. I specialize in selling off-market properties and
flipping with developers as I understand the remodeling
process and the potential profit that can be made in today’s
market. Most importantly, I have been able to find my client’s
homes for a price they never thought possible, while also
relocating them into homes that together they’ve created
their dream home.
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in June for $50 or less.
Looking for something to do with dad on Father’s Day weekend?
If he’s into cars, sunshine, and live music, look no further than
the Second Annual Delray Beach Concours d’Elegance! June
is Entrepreneurs “Do It Yourself” Marketing Month and this event,
founded by local Max Zengage, is the best way you can show up,
show support, and give back. The event boasts classic cars, vendors,
and live music, and is a fun opportunity to spend time with dad and
your community members. Held Saturday June 17 from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. at Old School Square, this free event is a sure-fire way to treat
dad to some good ol’ fashioned quality time. Honestly, what could be
better than a free classic car show in your own backyard? (Well, driving
one home, but that’ll be on you.) You can even treat him to food at
the event, or head to his favorite downtown restaurant for a burger
and a beer. The double feel-good aspect is that the event benefits
five Delray non-profits, including Achievement Center for Children
& Families, Delray Citizens for Delray Police, Delray Fire Benevolent,
Community Classroom Project, and Miracle League of Palm Beach
County. So, mark your calendars and make sure dad is free, because
it’s time to rev those Father’s Day engines. Please visit www.delrayconcours.org
or call (561) 927-8605
Loud and proud!
June is Gay, Lesbian,
Bisexual,
Transgender Pride
Month, which is a
great reminder to
love yourself and
love others. In true
Delray form, the City
is celebrating with an
event and everyone is
invited! Join the City of Delray Beach for the Third Annual Pride
Festival and Concert on June 10, 2023. The free event will start in
Pineapple Grove with live entertainment and vendors and will end
with one of the best Elton John Tribute bands around, ”Rocketman,”
Music starting at 7:30 p.m. at Old School Square. Be sure to also
check out the Pridescape painting of the inclusive flag at the Intersection
of Northeast Second Avenue and Northeast First Street,
in the historic district of Pineapple Grove, which the City of Delray
Beach created in 2021. Not only is this a great way to celebrate the
diversity in our city, but also to show support for your neighbors.
And who doesn’t love jamming out to Elton John tunes in the night
sky? Please visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561)
While Delray might not have a City zoo and aquarium,
we have the next best thing: The Sandoway
Discovery Center! It’s all the fun of a large animal-focused
destination, but with the hands-on (literally)
and personal touch that is perfect for first-time visitors
and returning guests. June is National Zoo and Aquarium
Month so get yourself over there and have some
fun. The Sandoway Discovery Center offers a glimpse into
South Florida’s fragile marine and freshwater environments
26 | june 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

through educational exhibits and programs. Visitors of all ages
can get an up-close view of some of Florida’s native and invasive
reptile species, can meet sharks and other fish at the coral
reef pool, explore Southeast Florida’s largest private shell collection
and join the team for special events such as Earth Day
and beach clean-ups. The center’s library is a great resource to
explore natural history and the environment. The observation
deck, shell collection and native plant and butterfly garden also
allow visitors to learn about our unique coastal environment.
There’s also shark and stingray feedings, as well as aquarium
feedings! Admission is $10 per person (ages three and older)
and the Center is open every day except for Monday. Please visit
www.sandoway.org or call (561) 274-7263 for more information
and to purchase admission tickets.
Something about being on or by the beach always invites
a tasty cocktail directly to my vicinity. Good news is that
we’re always by the beach! June is National Rum Punch
Month and there has never been a better time to beat the summer
heat than with a refreshing drink. Cabana El Rey offers their
Cabana Rum Punch, described as a Caribbean masterpiece of
light, dark and spiced rums shaken up with mango puree and
a blend of fruit juices for $14. It is a delightful masterpiece! For
another take on the punch, head over to Sandbar for their Cuban
Punch, which is made with Bacardi raspberry rum, Bacardi
mango rum, splash or amaretto, orange juice, pineapple juice
and a splash of grenadine. Great news, it’s also available by the
pitcher and they’re open daily at 11 a.m., so head over there before
or (and!) after the beach to cool off. For a more inland experience,
head over to Park Tavern for their take on the rum punch
with their Guavalicious. Made with Plantation Rum, guava, fresh
pineapple, grapefruit-serrano cordial for $12, you’ll be feelin’
fine in no time. Please visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or
call (561) 243-1077 for complete restaurant information.
Thankful for Florida, there’s always time to enjoy the outdoors.
We experience almost no weather-inhibiting days,
save for the occasional hurricane. June is Great Outdoors
Month and the perfect time to head outdoors and enjoy the
pleasure of our peninsula. Maybe grab the bike and hit the Avenue
from end to end, stopping for an al fresco lunch or happy
hour along the way. The beach is always a must, so grab a towel
(and a sub from Sandwiches By The Sea!) and a book and make
yourself comfortable with a front-row seat to the best Atlanticfacing
spot in town. Veteran’s Park is also a great destination,
full of shade and plenty of people- and boat-watching opportunities.
Or, take a stroll along the Intracoastal and enjoy viewing
the endless blocks of historical and new homes along one of
Delray’s slower streets. For a venue with a scene, head to Tin
Roof for live music and some tasty food and beverages. Regardless
of where you turn, there’s no bad spot in Delray! Please
visit www.downtowndelraybeach.com or call (561) 243-1077
for complete park and restaurant information.
A Beloved Delray Beach Mural is Revived!
The “Dancing Pineapple” mural on the Chloe Building
located at 135 E. Atlantic Ave. is regaining new life
after more than a decade, as “Pineapple Paradise”. The
original mural was painted by Anita Lovitt in 2008. In 2022,
after water damage, the wall needed to be reconstructed
along with window replacements. The mural location serves
as gateway to the Pineapple Grove Arts District along NE 2nd
Avenue north of Atlantic Avenue.
Glayson LeRoy, owner of Galera Collective’s, collaborated
with Chloe building owner, Lee Cohen, to revive the beloved
mural. Both Glayson and Lee are long time Delray Beach
residents and contribute to the City’s Arts & Cultural scene.
Glayson partnered with another Delray Beach original,
seasoned abstract graffiti-mural artist, Marcus “Grabster”
Borges. Grabster, whose artwork is known throughout South
Florida and internationally, is inspired from decades of
independent study creating eclectic, colorful, dynamic, and
skillful murals.
COPYRIGHTED
The new, “Pineapple Paradise” iconic landmark mural will
be 30% larger than its predecessor and it reflects Delray’s
subtropic feel, thriving flora and fauna, and scenes of boats
sailing offshore in the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
“The opportunity to collaborate with exceptional
developers like Lee Cohen on this esteemed project for my
hometown is a profound honor. He recognizes the dedication
and hard work I’ve invested into Delray Beach’s public art
scene,” states Glayson LeRoy, “In addition my coordination
with Josh Abrams of the 324-development project at 3rd &
3rd, concurrently producing the latest street level murals by
Quake, that will enliven the Arts Alley Arts District.”
► The Boogeyman Written by Stephen King
High school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer are
reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much
support from their father, Will (Chris Messina), a therapist who is
dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly
shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying
supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering
of its victims. The Boogeyman is directed by the talented British
genre filmmaker Rob Savage.
► The Blackening
The Blackening centers around a group of Black friends who reunite
for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in
a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Forced to play by his rules, the
friends soon realize this ain’t no motherf****** game. The Blackening
skewers genre tropes and poses the sardonic question: if the entire cast
of a horror movie is Black, who dies first? The Blackening is directed by
American filmmaker Tim Story, of movies including The Firing Squad,
Barbershop, Taxi, Fantastic Four, Hurricane Season, Think Like a Man 1
& Too, Ride Along 1 & 2, Shaft, and Tom & Jerry. This stars Grace Byers,
One of the last movies in the original DC Extended Universe (DCEU),
re-introducing the superhero known as The Flash. Barry Allen (Ezra
Miller) travels back in time as The Flash to try to prevent his mother’s
murder, which brings unintended consequences to his timeline… The
Flash is directed by the Argentinian filmmaker Andy Muschietti (aka
Andrés Muschietti), who directed It: Chapter One and It: Chapter
Two, plus the “Locke & Key” series for Netflix. This movie about
The Flash is also about Batman (again), as well as Supergirl, filling
returns starring as Barry Miller, with a cast including Sasha Calle as
Supergirl, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Maribel Verdú as Nora Allen,
losing her family’s home, Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) discovers
an intriguing job listing: wealthy helicopter parents looking for
someone to “date” their very introverted 19-year-old son, Percy,
before he leaves for college. To her surprise, Maddie soon discovers
the awkward Percy is no sure thing. No Hard Feelings is directed by
comedy producer / writer / filmmaker Gene Stupnitsky, director
of the film Good Boys previously, as well as some episodes of “The
Office”; he was also a writer on “The Office”, “Bad Teacher”, and “Hello
► Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Harrison Ford as adventurer Indiana Jones and Phoebe Waller-
Harrison Ford back as Indy. Meanwhile, Voller, a NASA member and
ex-Nazi involved with the Moon-landing program, wants to “rectify
the world and make it into a better place as he sees fit.”
► Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is
desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels
invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-
White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s
prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because
her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbade Ruby
from ever getting in the water. But when she breaks her mom’s
#1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the
warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from
her commanding grandmother (Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of
the Seven Seas. The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the
world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been
battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate,
problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea
(Annie Murphy) happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need
to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves…Kraken
features an extraordinary cast that includes Emmy winner Colman
Domingo as Ruby’s supportive dad, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson
as Ruby’s enthusiastic uncle, and Blue Chapman as Ruby’s cool little
brother, plus Toni Collette, Jaboukie Young-White, Annie Murphy,
Will Forte, Nicole Byer, Ramona Young, and Jane Fonda.
You Could Make This
Place Beautiful: A
Memoir
by MAGGIe Smith
ife, like a poem, is a series of choices.”
“L In her memoir You Could Make This
Place Beautiful, poet Maggie Smith explores
the disintegration of her marriage and her
renewed commitment to herself in lyrical vignettes
that shine, hard and clear as jewels.
The book begins with one woman’s personal,
particular heartbreak, but its circles widen
into a reckoning with contemporary womanhood,
traditional gender roles, and the power
dynamics that persist even in many progressive
homes. With the spirit of self-inquiry
and empathy she’s known for, Smith interweaves
snapshots of a life with meditations
on secrets, anger, forgiveness, and narrative
itself. The power of these pieces is cumulative:
page after page, they build into a larger
interrogation of family, work, and patriarchy.
You Could Make This Place Beautiful, like the
work of Deborah Levy, Rachel Cusk, and Gina
Frangello, is an unflinching look at what it
means to live and write our own lives. It is
a story about a mother’s fierce and constant
love for her children, and a woman’s love and
regard for herself. Above all, this memoir is
an argument for possibility.
Hotel Laguna
by Nicola Harrison
In 1942, Hazel Francis left Wichita, Kansas
for California, determined to do her part
for the war effort. At Douglas Aircraft, she became
one of many “Rosie the Riveters,” helping
construct bombers for the U. S. military.
But now the war is over, men have returned to
their factory jobs, and women like Hazel have
been dismissed, expected to return home to
become wives and mothers.
Unwilling to be forced into a traditional
woman’s role in the Midwest, Hazel remains
on the west coast, and finds herself in the bohemian
town of Laguna Beach. Desperate for
work, she accepts a job as an assistant to famous
artist Hanson Radcliff. Beloved by the
locals for his contributions to the art scene
and respected by the critics, Radcliff lives
under the shadow of a decades old scandal
that haunts him.
Working hard to stay on her cantankerous
employer’s good side, Hazel becomes a
valued member of the community. She never
expected to fall in love with the rhythms of life
in Laguna, nor did she expect to find a kindred
spirit in Jimmy, the hotel bartender whose
friendship promises something more. But Hazel
still wants to work with airplanes―maybe
even learn to fly one someday. Torn between
pursuing her dream and the dream life she has
been granted, she is unsure if giving herself
over to Laguna is what her heart truly wants.
You Can’t Joke
About That
by KAT Timpf
In a 2019 study, 40% of people reported
censoring themselves out of fear that voicing
their views would alienate them from the people
they care about most. Those people should
probably not read this book in public.
In You Can’t Joke About That, Kat Timpf
shows why much of the way we talk about sensitive
subjects is wrong. We’ve created all the
wrong rules. We push ourselves into unnecessary
conflicts when we should feel like we’re all
in this together. When someone says “you can’t
joke about that,” what they really mean is “this
is a subject that makes people sad or angry.”
Hilariously and movingly, Timpf argues that
those subjects are actually the most important
to joke about. She shows us we can find
healing through humor regarding things you
probably don’t want to bring up in polite conversation,
like traumatic break-ups, cancer,
being broke, Dave Chappelle, rape jokes, aging,
ostomy bags, religion, body image, dead
moms, religion, the lab leak theory, transgender
swimmers, gushing wounds, campus censorship,
and bad Christmas presents.
WE ARE
DELRAY
Two organizations that are working hard
to make Delray the best village ever.
Let’s start with Rotary International.
Founded in 1905 in Chicago, what began
with one club has, over the past 118 years,
expanded to over 46,000 clubs worldwide.
Their mission includes promoting peace,
fighting disease, providing clean water, sanitation
& hygiene, supporting mothers, babies,
education, and the environment. Truly
an “O.G.” of giving!
The Rotary Club of Delray Beach was chartered
in 1948 and has served our community
for the past 75 years! Each year, the club
provides dictionaries to all 3rd graders in
Delray’s elementary schools. They also provide
school supplies and host food drives, toy
drives, and clothing drives for the Achievement
Centers for Children and Families, the
Milagro Center, the Drug Abuse Foundation,
Yo u r m o n t h l y f e a t u r e o f a l l t h i n g s D e l r ay f r o m
Thanks to Over 50 Years of
Service from These Two O.G.’s!
The term “O.G.” has been used a lot in the media, especially
in sports and music. But no matter where it is used, it is
always prefaced with respect and awe. I am going to use this
month’s We Are Delray article to describe two organizations
held in deep respect and admiration here in Delray Beach.
and other local organizations. They have
planned beach clean-ups, planted trees, and
helped restore the community through Love
Delray. Over the past 75 years, the club has
also awarded over $750,000 to graduating
seniors in Delray Beach, providing ten $1,000
scholarships annually.
As club President Nick Basiaga explains
Rotary’s vision statement, “Rotary is a global
network of 1.4 million neighbors, friends,
leaders, and problem-solvers who see a
world where people unite and take action to
create lasting change – across the globe, in
our communities, and in ourselves.”
Our second, but no less important “O.G.”
in town is Kiwanis Club. Started in 1915, the
name Kiwanis was coined from an expression
in an American Indian language Keewanis,
which means we trade or we share
our talents. And boy, do they! Now in their
t h e
C h a m b e r
50th year, the Delray Beach Kiwanis Club is
one of the fastest-growing Clubs in the state
at a time when other service organizations
struggle to remain vibrant.
“All of us in the Delray Beach Kiwanis Club
are grateful to members of the community
for its support of our efforts to make the
place that we care deeply for stronger,” said
Pam Davidson, the current president. “We
take pride in knowing we are making a difference
in the lives of children and families
one child at a time.”
Local Kiwanis partnerships include
Achievement Center for Children and Families,
EJS Project, High School scholarships and
support of the Delray Beach Police. The club’s
current “On a Roll” campaign collected several
thousand dollars’ worth in paper towels,
wipes, other papers products and school supplies
for Orchard View Elementary School.
With respect and admiration, let’s cheer
on these two O.G.’s. Thanks for helping make
Delray GREAT!
By Dr. Safranski
Disc Injuries and
Decompression
Chiropractic care is a complementary and alternative
form of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis,
treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders,
particularly those affecting, but not limited to, the spine.
One of the most common conditions that chiropractors treat
is disc herniation, which occurs when the soft gel-like center
of a spinal disc pushes through a tear in its outer layer,
resulting in pain, inflammation, and compression of nearby nerves.
Cervical and lumbar spine disc herniation are two types of disc
herniation’s that affect different regions of the spine. Cervical disc
herniation occurs in the neck region and can cause pain, tingling,
numbness, and weakness in the arms, hands, and fingers. Lumbar
disc herniation, on the other hand, affects the lower back and can
cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and feet.
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive, drug-free approach
to treating cervical and lumbar
spine disc herniation that aims
to relieve pain, restore mobility,
and prevent further damage to the
spine. The most common chiropractic
techniques used to treat
disc herniation include spinal manipulation,
mobilization, and decompression.
Chiropractic adjustment, also
known as spinal manipulation, involves
the use of high velocity low amplitude
(HVLA) movements to realign
the spine and improve its function. This
technique can help relieve pain and inflammation
by reducing pressure on the affected
nerves and promoting the flow of blood and
nutrients to the affected area. Mobilization,
on the other hand, involves the use of slow,
gentle movements to stretch and strengthen
the affected muscles and ligaments. This technique
can help improve range of motion, reduce
stiffness, and prevent further damage to
the spine.
Non-surgical spinal decompression therapy,
also known as spinal decompression, involves
the use of a special table or device to
50 | June 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
gently stretch and decompress the spine. This technique can help
relieve pressure on the affected discs, reduce inflammation, and
promote the healing of damaged tissues.
Several studies have investigated the effectiveness of chiropractic
care in the treatment of cervical and lumbar spine disc herniation. A
2014 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled
trials found that spinal manipulation and mobilization were effective
in reducing pain and improving function in patients with cervical
disc herniation. Similarly, a 2016 systematic review and meta-analysis
of randomized controlled trials found that spinal manipulation
and decompression were effective in reducing pain and improving
function in patients with lumbar disc herniation.
However, it is important to note that chiropractic care may
not be appropriate for all patients with disc herniation. Patients
with severe or progressive neurological deficits, cauda
equina syndrome, or spinal instability may require more
aggressive forms of treatment, such as surgery.
In conclusion, chiropractic care can be an effective,
non-invasive, and drug-free approach to treating cervical
and lumbar spine disc herniation. The most common
chiropractic techniques used to treat disc
herniation include spinal manipulation, mobilization,
and decompression. However, it is
important to consult with a qualified chiropractor
to determine whether chiropractic
care is appropriate for your
specific condition and to develop
an individualized treatment
plan that meets your unique
needs and goals. Because allowing
you to live your best
life is in our best interests.
By ashley sica
Surgery No, Transformation YES!
Are you thinking about the
latest and greatest procedure to
change the shape of your body?
Well question your decision before you put down that
credit card. And I’m not talking about updating the boobies
for a perkier look (I’ll be the first to tell you to go for
that!), I’m talking about liposuction, fat transfers, booty implants,
etc…all the procedures that promise a brand new you, and give
you the look you always wanted, all those advertisements that just
seem too good to be true. Sure, a shortcut seems appealing and ideal
to some, or most…but you may want to think twice before going
under the knife. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against all surgeries
- I’m for the mom that has lots of excess extra skin. I’m for the one
who has literally tried everything (and tried it the right way) and
just needs that little extra help. I’m just weary against unnecessary
procedures and here’s why:
1Regret. I can’t tell you how many clients regret their surgery.
After it’s done, there is no going back. The worst is
when a client does go back to get a revision and it comes
out worse. Before going in, you should ask yourself, “Is this my
last resort, have I tried everything else? Would I really need lipo if
I just cleaned up my diet? Do I really need booty implants, if I did
all the right exercises - even if it took me 2-3 years or whatever
the time frame may be?”
2Longevity of results. Sure, you might look like a hot tamale
for a quick minute but if you don’t have the foundation of a
healthy lifestyle, the results will not last. I’ve had clients tell
me they got lipo and gained it all back! Can you imagine spending
all that time, money, and risks only to gain it all back. I never understood
how one could think they can continue eating junk and the
fat would never come back. That would be a miracle! If you learn
how to eat and exercise correctly, those are the results that last. It
may not be the quick fix you were hoping for but I can promise that
you’ll really appreciate the results once you get there.
3The bad fat. Plastic surgery does not get rid of the dangerous
visceral fat that sticks around the organs. This type of fat can
lead to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. If you think that
after going under the knife, you’re going to become a “healthier”
version of yourself, think again. Once again everything leads back
to diet and exercise. No quick fix, but one that will help you live
healthier, stronger, and longer.
4Undesired results. This kind of goes along with the regret I
mentioned above, but I can honestly say most of my clients
that had various procedures are truly unhappy with the outcome
for one reason or another. Dimpled bellies, drooping derriere
implants, infected areas, boxy shapes, the list goes on. Most looks
that the average client is after ARE attainable through eating clean
52 | June 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
and the right exercises. You might never have a booty like Kim Kardashian,
but do you really want one? If so, then do what makes you
happy, but know the results are not always as promised and you
should to be prepared to deal with that possibility.
Hopefully reading this article has given you a few points to consider
before committing to surgery. Ultimately doing what makes
you happiest is what is most important. Being informed and doing
research will ensure you make the best decision for you!
Christian
Thompson
Interviewed and written by Emily Peters | Photo by Joan Marcus
Christian Thompson, who skillfully portrayed his name-fellow
in the Broadway adaptation of The Devil Wears Prada, is
once again leaving theater attendees on their feet cheering
for more - all while smashing stereotypes on stages around
the country. Consider this your official invitation to the show.
Thompson, who originates from Fort Lauderdale, Florida has recently
been cast as Fiyero in Wicked, the fourth longest-running
musical in Broadway history, and currently the most popular. On
February 7, 2023, Thompson made his premiere appearance in Orlando,
Florida at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.
“What I’m trying to bring to Fiyero the most, is I feel like he’s gotten a
bad rap over the years for being kind of an airhead, and I don’t see him
as that. I see him as a person that in the most healthy and not healthy
way, is just concerned with what he needs to be - nothing more nothing
less… it’s a laser focus. So, I attempt to bring emotional depth to his
character. He has a line in the show, ‘you know me, I’m always happy.’
He’s very blatantly saying, I have to be happy all the time even when I’m
not. That was a big a-ha moment when I said it on stage and realized the
deeper meaning behind it. I’m exploring what it looks like for someone
who is trying to do the right thing in this war between good and evil but
straddling the fence between both of them.”
Life goals can change over time, but for Christian Thompson, his mind
was made up at eight years old… there was no plan B.
“As a kid, my dad taught me how to play the drums, and it was always
good to have music in my life… but my mother is the one who continued
to support me and make sure I was in the best position to succeed. I don’t
know why I looked at it this way, as a practical path. It’s sort of a universal
mystery to me. I am just one of the lucky ones where that tenacity and
drive, coupled with talent - which I had nothing to do with giving myself
- and good fortune along the way, all worked out in one to create this
career. I was blessed to be with (the Broadway show) Ain’t Too Proud,
including the pandemic for five and a half years, and we were in New York
for about two and a half of those. I grew up in South Florida, but when that
hit Broadway, I moved to New York and made it my full-time home base.”
Co-writing the musical In-Gauged for his alma mater Penn State,
Christian bestows many accolades to the school that he acknowledges
helped him achieve success.
“Because I went for musical theater, it was a very intense program
54 | June 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
of acting, singing, and dancing. For four years, I really honed my craft
and was able to learn from some of the best educators in the country,
including Kikora Franklin and Steve Broadnax. Penn State even has a new
fantastic initiative where they bring in composers and writers, which has
even included Joe Iconis (best known for writing the music and lyrics to
Be More Chill) to create a show for the senior class. Being able to go back
and work with students is super rewarding. I get to be that person who
bridges the gap between academia and the profession.”
The road to stardom isn’t always lined with self-affirmation, and as a
teenager, Thompson experienced a bit of the other side of fame… selfdoubt.
Eventually, however, his life turned full circle.
“I was in high school, and my class saw Billy Elliot, which is a brilliant
musical. At intermission I was in the lobby with some friends, and
realized that the children actors were so talented, and half my age. I
thought, if this is what it takes to be on Broadway, I was behind the eightball
and how was I ever going to make it? That was in the lobby of the
Imperial Theater in Manhattan, and if you connect the dots, Ain’t Too
Proud opened at the same venue about ten years later. The very place
where I thought it would never happen, is where I debuted.”
Christian has consistently been fulfilling his ambitions and explains
how the thrill of landing a part never subsides.
“For me, the first big roles I had were for The Ocean City Theater
Company, where I was cast in Peter Pan and Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Those
were my first two professional shows, and that was such an exciting and
terrifying experience. When you’re finally on stage, there’s an added
pressure of not letting the dream down. It was a great way to cut my
teeth, and I even got to go back after I was on Broadway and receive the
key to the city - which was lovely.
I keep getting the next step up as far as roles are concerned, and that
fact is not lost on me. I remember getting the call for Wicked in a hotel
room and literally fell to the ground, flabbergasted it was happening. The
novelty doesn’t wear off, and if anything, it gets more dramatic.”
Portraying a fictional character is unlike someone who has actually
COPYRIGHTED

You get to look at
yourself through
so many different
lenses, and it helps
to solidify who you
are as a human…
or it changes you.
lived or may still be living, and Thompson describes how he
tackles both.
“Smokey (Robinson) was around, Smokey saw the show (Ain’t
Too Proud). There’s a respect that has to happen when it’s a real
person. You always want to do justice and honor people that
went through hell and high water for us to even do a show about
them, especially when they are heroes in our community. There’s
a care, a very gentle way you have to hold that role in your hands.
I wasn’t going to walk into the Smokey Robinson role and make
up my own voice. With a character that’s not a real living person,
you can kind of throw them around and try different things.
What you can do with a fictional character is figure out how to
find their humanness and realness. It’s the difference between
pottery and clay-making. Someone that’s actually lived… it’s
already been started, so you have to continue to mold it. With
fiction, it’s brand new. You have to slam that clay down and
make sure it’s stuck on there before you can get going.”
Mainstream media has an opportunity to redesign the future
when it comes to thoughts and behaviors concerning race in
America. The growing number of Black performers on Broadway
around the world, proves live theater has gotten the message.
“I think it’s the greatest responsibility and the greatest
opportunity I have - that by just existing, I can guarantee the
chance for the next me… and for the next me to not have to think
about whether they would be cast. I don’t think any actor of
color takes the responsibility of representation lightly. I started
off thinking Fiyero was not a part to go after because there were
so very few of us, and now I can add my name to that list and
make it a little bit longer. To be in those shoes is both exciting
and a weight, but it’s a weight worth bearing. It’s something
we have to do, and something we get to do. There’s good things
happening on the horizon, but we still have to work for it to
continue - not only on stage, but also with crew members and
creatives. There are a lot of incredible people fighting that fight
every day, and I’m glad to be amongst them.”
To embody an entity that you were not born as, night after
night, you must lose yourself and reinvent your way of thinking.
“I think all of these characters live in me constantly, and
I’m always learning something new about myself through the
people I play. I think that’s one of the gifts of being an actor. You
get to look at yourself through so many different lenses, and it
helps to solidify who you are as a human… or it changes you.”
Christian Thompson’s impressive resumé combined with
his effervescent capacity for greatness, proves he can only
accelerate from here.
“I want to see how far I can take it. I think that little kid at
eight years old who said, ‘this is what I want to do,’ would be
very disappointed if he knew that I got to this level and then said,
‘alright I’m good here.’ I was fortunate enough to understudy a
lead role in Ain’t Too Proud on Broadway but haven’t had a lead
myself yet. There’s a lot that I’m excited about with my writing,
which is a brand-new wrinkle in this career of mine - you know,
there’s always a new goal. I’m constantly trying to remind myself
to enjoy the moment I’m in, but striving for the next thing,
whether that be a Tony Award or another show. But the big
epiphany I had in the past year or so, is to not put a cap on what’s
possible, and try to enjoy the ride while I see what comes true.”
BOB GARFIELD
Not Your Average Realtor
By Nicol Jenkins | photos by melissa korman
A realtor needs to have the
skills to act quickly on their feet
when challenges occur during
a real estate transaction.
58 | June 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Performing music live is Bob Garfield’s hobby, and it has
taught him how to remain calm and make thoughtful decisions
while playing on stage. These attributes are a large
part of his success as a Realtor these past 11 years.
When he is not assisting clients in real estate, Bob can often be
seen around town playing guitar and singing in Invasion Duo, a
band that highlights British hits from the early 60’s.
Real estate is more than a career to Bob, it is his passion. He
carefully listens to his clients’ needs and goals then sets about
helping them sell their home or locate their dream property. His
personal approach is to exceed his clients’ highest expectations.
“Listening carefully to a clients’ desires then reacting to what
is heard is the single most important skill to master in becoming
a successful realtor.”
Besides being a good listener, the local realtor knows the community
like the back of his hand. He lives, works, and plays in
Delray Beach. As rare as it may seem, Bob is also a native Floridian.
He was born and raised in South Florida and has lived in
Delray Beach, enjoying the unique lifestyle for over 18 years. After
receiving a degree in Business Administration from the University
of Florida, Bob embarked on a 30-year career as a Senior
Buyer for a major department store and then as a Sales Manager
and Account Executive for several major textile manufacturers.
He focuses on helping his clients sell their current properties
or locate a new home. He takes pride in responding quickly to his
clients and providing detailed follow-up throughout a transaction,
selling all price ranges, including beautiful homes with direct
Intracoastal views. He was co-listing agent on a recent sale for a
new construction 5-bedroom home in Rio Del Rey Shores, listed
at $6,950,000. His most recent sale at 1371 Estuary Trail Delray
Beach, has direct intra-coastal views. Estuary is one of only a few
24-hour guard gated communities in east Delray Beach.
“I see the recent frenzy in the real estate market over the past
3 years subsiding and returning to a healthy balanced market.
Delray Beach in particular, is highly desirable due to its proximity
to the beach, fine dining and live music. Delray Beach is
a blend of a New England seaside town and Greenwich Village
New York all rolled into one. You can see anything from casual
locals to celebrities driving Ferraris; it attracts all types of people
and offers a little bit of everything,” said Bob, adding, “Delray
Beach is becoming less and less seasonal. Homes are still selling
in the summer months.
Going above and beyond for his clients makes Bob a top producer
in his field.
“I go the extra mile for them and am there long after the sale
is completed. I have helped out-of-town clients with moving and
assisted with repair people. I am here to help for the long term.
This very often results in making life-long friends with my clients,”
he said.
His customers praise him for his dedication in helping them sell
or find their new home in Delray Beach and neighboring cities.
“Bob Garfield was great! I knew of him from his fliers and ads
in Atlantic Ave Magazine, and he just happens to live two doors
down from us. He was a joy to work with and everything went so
quickly and smoothly. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
Bob helped us price it right and the proof was in the results. All
communications were easy to follow, and response times were
immediate. Highly recommend,” said Chris and Susan Bennett.
“Bob went above and beyond my expectations! He negotiated
a full-price offer and managed all aspects of the sale. I highly
recommend Bob for his professionalism and knowledge of the
local area!” said Garrett.
“Bob Garfield is a true real estate professional, personable,
knowledgeable, patient, and caring. He understands what is
important to the process of successfully selling your home. Bob
will take the time to help you understand what will work best in
the process of preparing the home for the market, will help you
with any contractor services you may need, and will advise you
through the entire process. Bob truly understands that putting
his clients first will result in obtaining the successful real estate
transaction we all seek,” said George Huettel.
SCRATCH CAR
Everyone’s “Go - To” Place
For Auto Repair And Painting
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
Miracles do happen, you just have to look for them. But
when it comes to auto repair, it often feels like a Las
Vegas poker game. You might win, or you might lose.
But the people who choose Scratch Car all feel like winners.
“Scratch Car did an amazing job on my Lexus. The fender
was peeled back, and it had been keyed. I heard about
SCRATCH CAR from friends, met Fernando and dropped off my car.
They had it for 24 hours and did an excellent job at a very good price.
I’m so happy I came here! I highly recommend them,” said Sally Engel.
Sally is not exaggerating. The legion of fans who take their cars to
Scratch Car (when in need of collision auto repair or painting) continues
to expand. Often new clients are shocked at the efficiency and
excellent repair work they do at a much lower price than other shops.
Since cars have become more sophisticated and scarce, Scratch
Car has become the go-to resource for repair.
A damaged bumper or side panel doesn’t have to ring alarm bells.
When a car is picked up at Scratch Car, it’s usually a time for rejoicing.
Daniel Cardoso, the estimator at Scratch Car, sees this all the
time. “I enjoy providing the best customer service for everyone. It
feels good to know I made someone’s life easier. You can see the
relief on their faces when they leave.”
Daniel is the son of owner Adrian Cardoso and has worked in his
father’s shop since he was eight years old. He went to South Tech
62 | June 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
Academy and is now the estimator and trainer. At South Tech Daniel
studied auto repair and honed his skills in refinishing, trim-hardware,
maintenance, safety, and environmental concerns.
This multidimensional training has made him even more adept
at helping customers. “My goal is to continue giving great customer
service and keep things flowing nicely so we can make things easier
for our customers. If they’re happy, so are we,” adds Daniel.
You could say that mission is accomplished on a daily basis - Just
ask Mark Church.
“I was down because someone hit the left quarter panel and bumper
of my brand-new car. Most body shops would have repainted
the entire bumper and quarter panel, charged over $2000 and had
my car for days. I hated the idea of repainting part of my new car
as it would never be the same as factory paint. Scratch Car repaired
the dent in my fender/bumper and repainted. You can’t even tell
where the paint was blended. They only charged me $800 and gave
me my perfectly repaired car back in just 24 hours! The best body
shop for repairs I have ever found.”
That is music to owner Adrian’s ears. He worked in his father’s
auto repair shop in Brazil, but came to the US and started a mobile
car repair – going to people’s houses to fix their cars.
That was almost 27 years ago. Now Scratch Car does all collision repairs
and paints on all makes and models of cars. They also take all insurances,
and in most scenarios, they will help with your deductible.
COPYRIGHTED

“When I first started doing this, I couldn’t believe how expensive
it was to repair scratches, scrapes, moldings, mirror covers, fenders,
quarter panels etc. That is why I wanted to do repairs at a fair
price and get vehicles fixed in a shorter time.”
And don’t worry about sitting on hold when you call. A real person
will answer and start the auto repair process for you.
Kudo’s also go to their professional well-respected manager, Fernando
Rezende. His kind and professional manner helps customers
get excellent service quickly and precisely. He also cares about his
customers well-being and gets their cars back in a timely manner.
“Many body shops keep cars for weeks (and even months). But, some
of our customers are seniors and they need their cars back quickly, so
we try to get them back the same day or the next day,” said Rezende.
This speedy repair work is due to what Cardoso calls their personalized
approach. “Our technicians are trained to do everything
from start to finish on each car. We don’t have one person bump out
Exploring Our
Great National Parks
BY Lisa Marie
With over 420 National Park Sites in USA, across more than 84
million acres there are 63 that have been selected by Congress
as especially important. This month we explore six of the
lesser-known National Parks and indulge in their sheer beauty
and diversity. These are among our nation’s true treasures!
Voyageurs national park
Voyageurs
Straddling the Minnesota-Canadian border, this relatively quiet
park has no entrance fees and no roads! With 218,000 acres, water
makes up one-third of this natural wonder. You’ll leave your car
at one of the three visitor centers but No car = No problem! You can
navigate the 4 main lakes (Rainy, Kabetogama, Namakan, and Sand
Point) plus the 26 smaller interior lakes by renting a houseboat,
take a guided boat or canoe tour, a ranger led paddle, water taxi or
bring your own boat. If land is more your thing, then relish in an array
of wonderful hiking trails on offer. A taster of the hikes available;
Cruiser Lake Trail is a tough 9.5 miles, but there is a chance of spotting
a moose or hearing the howl of a wolf. Blind Ash Trail Park, an
easy 2.5-mile loop takes you through the boreal forest, with exceptional
scenery. The 2.5-mile Echo Bay trail is great for bird watchers.
Binoculars are a must! Accommodation within the park is only
available by water. Kettle Falls Hotel is the only non-camping option
with camping (tents only) or houseboats as the alternative. One extra
special sight that you might capture is The Aurora Borealis (Northern
Lights), intermittent but a possibility. Visit www.nps.gov/voya.
Shenandoah
Located in western Virginia and just 75 miles from Washington,
D.C., this 200,000-acre park extends for more
than 100 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains. Start by taking
the only public road through the park, the Skyline Drive
which runs 105 miles north and south along the crest of the
Blue Ridge Mountains and gives you panoramic views along
the way. Shenandoah has over 500 miles of hiking trails with
a section including the long-distance Appalachian Trail. With
an expanse forest, you can expect to be entranced by cascading
waterfalls, breezy summits with spectacular vistas, rocky
peaks, and an abundance of wildlife. These protected lands
are home to deer, squirrels, black bear and many bird species.
Nestled in the heart of Shenandoah National Park, you
will find multiple lodging options that cater to different tastes
and needs, from comfortable and elegant to rustic and quaint.
All lodging facilities in Shenandoah National Park are operated
by Delaware North, the Park concessionaire. Visit www.
Channel Islands national park
Shenandoah national park
Channel Islands
Channel Islands National Park and Marine Sanctuary in California,
nicknamed ‘North America’s Galapagos’ is a chain of five islands
along the Santa Barbara Channel - Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa
Rosa, Santa Barbara, and San Miguel. This NP is rich with untouched
natural beauty and home to over 2,000 plant and animal species,
including 30 marine mammal species including dolphins, elephant
seals and the largest in the world, blue whales. Visiting here will take
advanced planning. The mainland visitor centers are in Santa Barbara
and Ventura, accessible by car but the islands require transport
by park concessionaire boats, private boats and planes. On arrival
in this magnificent haven there are few amenities. No Wi-Fi forces
you to breathe in and admire the nature and really enjoy the scenery.
Camping is available year-round but is primitive and small in numbers,
and once on the island you must get there on foot, carrying all
supplies. Whether it’s a day trip or a week, there are plenty of things
to see and do on the islands. Escape the congestion and indulge in
snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, birdwatching or just relaxing. Planning
is essential so please visit www.nps.gov/chis.
great basin national park
Great Basin
Traveling along The Loneliest Road in America to get to this National
Park located on the border of eastern Nevada and western
Utah, its situated in the Great Basin Desert. One of the highlights
is the Wheeler Peak scenic drive. A 12-mile drive hugging the South
Snake Range, you will find yourself heading into the clouds to over
10,000 feet above sea level, with the summit at 13,065. You will
be met with far reaching vistas and panoramic views of the pine
forests, lower mountains, lakes and the desert below you. Lehman
Caves is another ‘must-do.’ Only allowing entry with a guided tour,
you will be met by familiar cave formations, stalagmites stalactites,
columns, draperies, flowstone and soda straws but the caves are
most famous for their abundance of shields. This park also attracts
people interested in birdwatching, stargazing and wildflowers.
Hiking one of the 25 trails will also give you amazing views. Recommendations
are Bristlecone and Glacier Trail to see the glacier,
moraine and the bristle cones and the Alpine Lakes Trail for lakes,
meadows, woodlands, spruce, aspen and pines! There are no lodging
facilities in the park, but the community of Baker, 5 miles east
of the park entrance, has several places to stay including motels,
B&B’s, cabins and more. Camping is allowed inside the National
Park but is extremely limited. This is the least visited National Park
and consequently there are fewer people offering almost no litter
and tranquil, quiet trails. Visit www.nps.gov/grba.
great sand dunes national park
Great Sand Dunes
This National Park and Preserve is in southern Colorado. As the
name depicts, it is known for its huge sand dunes, the tallest,
Star Dune at 750 feet high. Year round, visitors can sled down the
dunes descending into the soft sand at the bottom. When Sangre
de Cristo Mountains begin melting into Medano Lake and flowing
around the basin of the area’s dunes, it turns into a vast outdoor
waterslide and most unique beaches for its visitors. It’s no secret

that National Parks host some of the darkest skies in the country. In
some areas of the Great Sand Dunes National Park, it’s possible to
see up to 15,000 stars throughout the night. Stargazing at its best!
There is no lodging inside the park but at the entrance you will find
Great Sand Dunes Lodge, an excellent alternative to those not wanting
to pitch a tent. There are several options for camping inside the
park, mostly on a first-come-first-served basis. If you enjoy fishing,
hiking or photography this might be the National Park for you. Visit
www.nps.gov/grsa.
Katmai
Sitting on a peninsula in southern Alaska and 260 miles southwest
of Anchorage this is a true wilderness destination! It
was designated a national monument after the eruption of Novarupta
in 1912 which formed the Valley of 10,000 Smokes. It
became a National Park in 1980. Unconnected to any town by
road it is only accessible by boat or floatplane, so planning is
essential. The greatest attraction for visitors is that it is home
katmai national park
to about 2,000 brown bears that are drawn to Brooks Falls for
the abundance of sockeye salmon. You can get great views and
photos from the lookout platforms at Brooks Camp. There are
other locations that offer bear watching opportunities in season.
In the month of June, Hallo Bay and Swikshak Lagoon are
a good bet. Always have your camera at the ready as you might
also spot moose, caribou, wolf, waterfowl, bald eagles, whales
and seals. Katmailand, Inc. is the only National Park Service authorized
concessioner in Katmai, offering overnight accommodations
and food and beverage service based at Brooks Lodge
and Grosvenor Lodge. They also offer guided sport fishing, gifts
and merchandise, outdoor recreation equipment rental, public
showers, ground transportation and sightseeing, and camper
drop-off services. The park’s visitor center at Brooks Camp is
open seasonally from June 1 through mid-September and guests
can sign up for ranger-led tours of the Valley of 10,000 Smokes
or a walking tour to learn the human history of the Brooks River
Archeological District. Visit www.nps.gov/katm.
Looking Back
june in History
By Lewis David
Looking back at important dates that
took place in the month of June both
here in America and across the globe.
June 3rd, 1972
• Sally Jane Priesand became the first female rabbi in the United
States after being ordained. She would go on to work at the Stephen
Wise Free Synagogue in New York City.
• Unarmed student protestors in Tiananmen Square in Beijing
are fired upon by the Chinese government. The protest had
initially begun as a way to mourn Hu Yaobang, a reformer in the
government, but turned violent when the People’s Army was sent
in. U.S. estimates the death toll at 3,000.
June 6th, 1872 and 1944
• Susan B. Anthony, a feminist and
activist, was fined for voting in a
presidential election in New York.
Emboldened by the extension of
voting rights to African Americans,
she led a group of women to
the polls but was subsequently
arrested and fined. She would
refuse to pay, and half a century later
the right for women to vote would be
enshrined in the 19th Amendment.

• The largest amphibious assault in history took place on the
beaches of Normandy, on the northern coast of Nazi-occupied
France. Operation Overlord, better known as D-Day, was the
culmination of months of planning, thousands of ships, and
millions of soldiers. Fifteen thousand allied troops lost their lives
on the beaches of Gold, Juno, Sword, Utah, and Omaha, but by the
end of the day 150,000 allied troops were on the beaches, and the
liberation of Europe began.
June 12th, 1898
• The island chain of the Philippines in South East Asia declared
its independence from Spain during the Spanish-American war.
However, following American victory in the war, it was invaded
and occupied by the United States and would remain an American
colony until the end of the Second World War.
June 13th, 1966
• In the Supreme Court
case Miranda v. Arizona
it was ruled 5-4 that an
accused person must be
informed of their rights
by police before they are
questioned. The rights
include the right to
remain silent, the right
to know that anything
said can be used against
them in a court of law, and
the right to an attorney. These
rights are known as a person’s
“Miranda Rights.”
June 14th, 1775 and 1777
• The Continental Army, the first U.S. military service, was
established by the Second Continental Congress. The following
day, George Washington was named its leader in the War against
the British.
• The concept of the United States flag, stars, and stripes on a
background of red, white, and blue, was introduced before Congress
by future U.S. President and founding father John Adams.
silversmith called John Hull. This was done as an act of defiance of
the colonial laws imposed on the citizens of the Thirteen Colonies
by the English Parliament.
June 15th, 1215
• The Magna Carta, often heralded as the foundation of many of
the basic rights and liberties we enjoy in democracies today, was
signed into law by King John of England. English nobles, frustrated
by the king’s power, forced him to sign the document and set the
foundation for modern democracy.
June 17th, 1972
• Five men were arrested at
the National Democratic Headquarters,
located in the Watergate
Complex in Washington
D.C. Their arrest would set off
a domino effect of investigations
that would culminate
with the resignation of sitting
president Richard Nixon two
months later.
June 18th, 1815
• In Belgium, on the field of Waterloo, the French army of
Napoleon suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of
British, Dutch, Belgian, and Prussian troops.
Napoleon’s defeat ended 23 years of war
in Europe. He was subsequently sent in
exile to St. Helena, a small island over a
thousand miles off the coast of Africa.
June 19th, 1812
• U.S. President James Madison
proclaims the United States to be
in a state of war with the British
Empire. The War of 1812 would last
over two years and see the White
House burnt down by British troops.
The war was ended in 1814 with the
signing of the Treaty of Ghent.
• The Soviet Union began a blockade of
West Berlin in order to force concessions from
the western powers. Instead, an emergency
airlift was undertaken by the Allies in order
to provide food, coal, and medical supplies to
the inhabitants of the city. British and American
planes flew about 278,000 flights, until May 12,
1949, when the Soviets lifted the blockade.

June 25th, 1876
• Near the Little Bighorn River in Montana General George A.
Custer attacked a Sioux encampment. This led to a Sioux retaliation
and of Custer’s 250 men, only a scout and a single horse survived.
The defeat incited Americans and led to a war between American
troops and the Sioux Indians.
June 26th, 1945
• The United Nations Charter was
signed by 50 nations in San Francisco
following the surrender of Germany in
the European theatre of World War II.
June 28th, 1914 and 1919
• Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire was murdered
in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalists. This
led to a chain of events culminating in the
First World War which was, at the time, the
deadliest conflict the world had ever seen.
• Five years after the Archduke’s assassination,
the Treaty of Versailles formally ended the First
World War. Responsibility for the war was put on
Germany’s shoulders and they were forced to pay
reparations and give up significant territory. The
harsh terms of the peace contributed to the rise
of Nazism in Germany and the outbreak of the
Second World War 20 years later.
• United States ground forces land in Korea following the invasion
of North Korean troops across the 38th parallel. The war would last
three years until an armistice was signed that split the countries
along the 38th parallel.
• The 26th Amendment to the Constitution was enacted, which
lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. The change meant that the
United States gained 11 million new voters.
hurricane prep
The Essential Guide to
Hurricane Preparedness
BY Christine Harrison
Each year hurricane season begins on June 1st and lasts 5
months, with storms typically peaking in August and September.
As with every hurricane season regardless of forecast, knowing
the essentials of how to prepare could truly be a life saver.
Hurricane Knowledge
First, know your hurricane facts and understand common terms
used during hurricane forecasts. Storm conditions can vary on the
intensity, size and even the angle which the tropical cyclone approaches
your area, so it is vital you understand what the forecasters
and news reporters are telling you.
Tropical Depressions are cyclones with winds of 38 mph. Tropical
Storms vary in wind speeds from 39-73 mph while Hurricanes have
winds 74 mph and greater. Typically, the upper right quadrant of the
storm is the most intense portion of the storm. The greatest threats
are damaging winds, storm surge and flooding. This is in part why
Hurricane Katrina was so catastrophic when bringing up to 28 foot
storm surges onto the Louisiana and Mississippi coastlines.
Here are some important terms you may hear:
• Tropical Storm Watch: Tropical storm conditions are possible
in the area.
• Hurricane Watch: Hurricane conditions are possible in the area.
Watches are issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset
of tropical storm force winds.
• Tropical Storm Warning: Tropical storm conditions are expected
in the area.
• Hurricane Warning: Hurricane conditions are expected in the
area. Warnings are issued 36 hours in advance of tropical storm
force winds.
• Eye: Clear, sometimes well-defined center of the storm with
calmer conditions.
• Eye Wall: Surrounding the eye, contains some of the most severe
weather of the storm with the highest wind speed and largest precipitation.
72 | June june 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
• Rain Bands: Bands coming off the cyclone that produce severe
weather conditions such as heavy rain, wind, and tornadoes.
• Storm Surge: An often underestimated and deadly result of
ocean water swelling as a result of a landfalling storm, and quickly
flooding coastal and sometimes areas further inland.
During a watch, prepare your home and evacuation plan in case a
warning is issued. During a warning, carefully follow the directions
of officials, and immediately leave the area if they advise it. In the
event of an Extreme Wind Warning/Advisory, which means that extreme
sustained winds of 115 mph or greater are expected to begin
within an hour, immediately take shelter in the interior portion of
a well-built structure.
Hurricane Forecasts
Predicting a tropical cyclone’s path can be challenging; there
are many global and local factors that come into play. The storm’s
size and path can directly influence what sort of wind patterns
guide, enhance, or hinder its growth, and vice versa! Forecasters
have computers that take huge amounts of data and try to predict
where the storm will go and usually can calculate 2-3 days out accurately.
This is where you hear the terms computer models and
spaghetti models being used. Generally, the forecast track or path
is given with the average consensus of these models. The National
Hurricane Center has the most up-to-date information on tropical
cyclone developments, forecasts and weather alerts, discussions
analyzing the data and more. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/
Hurricane Names
Hurricane names are picked randomly, then rotated and recycled
every 6 years. If a hurricane was catastrophic or severely deadly
and costly (i.e., Charlie, Katrina, Irene) it is officially retired since
use is not appropriate and can be confusing when naming current
storms. To view the current list of tropical cyclone names click
here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml
Hurricane Kits
It is important to create a kit of supplies that you could take with
you if you are forced to evacuate. This kit will also be useful if you
are able to stay in your home, but are still affected by the storm,
such as through the loss of power. One common trend seen when
hurricanes are approaching is a wide-spread panic. When this happens,
people rush in large numbers to get all the supplies they think
they need. However, if you prepare your kit ahead of time, you can
alleviate a lot of the potential stress of a very chaotic situation. You
should create your kit in a bag that you can easily take with you.
Some recommended items to include are:
• Non-perishable food (enough to last at least 3 days)
• Water (enough to last at least 3 days)
• First-aid kit (include any prescription medication you may need)
• Personal hygiene items and sanitation items
• Flashlights (have extra batteries on hand)
• Battery operated radio (again, have extra batteries)
• Waterproof container with cash and important documents
• Manual can opener
• Lighter or matches
• Books, magazines, games for recreation
• Special needs items: pet supplies and baby supplies if applicable
• Cooler and ice packs
• A plan for evacuation and for if family members are separated
Securing Your Home
Know how to secure your home in the event of damaging winds,
storm surge and flooding.
• Cover all windows, either with hurricane shutters or wood.
• Although tape can prevent glass from shattering everywhere,
be warned that tape does not prevent the window from breaking.
• Make sure all trees and shrubs are trimmed and clear rain gutters.
• Reinforce garage doors.
• Bring in all outdoor furniture, garbage cans, decorations, and
anything that is not tied down.
• If winds become strong, stay away from windows and doors
and close, secure and brace internal doors.
Power Outages
In the event a storm should leave you without power, there are a
few things to consider and help you be ready and stay safe outside
of your normal hurricane preparedness.
• Gas: Make sure your tank is full far in advance of an approaching
storm. Most people wait until the last minute, rush to get extra gas
for cars and generators, and subsequently gas stations run out early.
• ATMS: Have extra cash on hand in the event no ATMS in your
area are accessible or working.
• Cell Phones: Charge your cell phone and limit use after power is out.
• A/C: This can be the most uncomfortable side effect of losing
power during a storm. Try to prevent as much light from entering
and warming the house by covering up your windows on the inside.
If you have back-up or battery-operated fans, don’t run them unless
you are in the room. Fans create a difference in perceived temperature
but do not cool the room; instead, they create a cooling effect
by dispersing the heat off your skin. It is said they can actually add
heat to a room just by running.
• Water: Fill bathtub and large containers with water for washing
and flushing only.
• Food: Turn your fridge temperature down and/or freeze any
food or drinking water that can be frozen if you expect a power outage.
Have a cooler with ice packs prepared to cool your drinks and
snacks after power has been out for more than 4 hours.
Remember, any severe storm can be deadly and destructive. If
you’ve survived a landfilling cyclone, you know the inconvenience
and distress it can cause. One of the best tips to be prepared is
knowing the cycle of a cyclone - Approach, Arrival & Aftermath.
Prepare ahead of time and listen to the directions of officials for the
approach. Secure your home, or find a safe shelter for its arrival,
and know how to proceed safely during the aftermath.
Delray Beach chamber of commerce
Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce has always provided
services and programming that is tailored to its large and
diverse membership. There are events and programs like
YPAD for the under 40 crowd, Nonprofit Council for our nonprofit
members, Focus on Women for the female membership as well
as many others. The only demographic not specifically addressed
lately was a solid option for men. That was until late last year.
It was then, after a conversation between myself and Lynn Van
Lenten that CORE was born. CORE is an acronym for Creating
Original Relationships through Experiences. One of the best ways
to form bonds and build relationships is through shared experiences.
The idea was to plan a quarterly event where we can get
a group of guys together to attend a one-of-a-kind experience.
The key word is experience. The goal was to create experiences
that would benefit the guys who attended and leave them talking
about it for the weeks and months that follow. It’s not your typical
networking event though!
While CORE events are different each time, the format stays
the same. We cap attendance to the first 50 men who register and
each event is aimed at enriching a part of their lives through fun
and educational experiences. These experiences are carefully curated
to be one of a kind and provide an opportunity to develop
relationships with other guys, past what appears on their business
card during a fun and engaging event.
“At The CORE
of Delray Beach”
BY SHAUN HALL
THANK YOU to OUR SPONSORS
Our first event was at Warren in West Delray. They did a bourbon
tasting and pairing with some of their new dishes, explained
the differences between bourbon, scotch and other whiskeys and
even taught a class on how to make a proper old fashioned! That
event was the talk of the town. We followed that up with a night
of motors and martinis at Haggarty Social. Where we had the opportunity
to tour the facility and see some of the most rare and
expensive automobiles in the world while drinking martinis and
learning about all of the different types of vehicles they have in
their collection. We followed that event up watching the sunset
from Rosewater where we learned how to look our best. We had
a tailor, Maria, from J. Hilburn Men’s Clothier talking to us about
the latest style trends, barbers from Legacy Barbershop giving
us grooming tips and providing haircuts and Nancy Reagan from
Bella Reina Spa talking about skincare for men and demonstrating
a few new products. We are proud of these elevated networking
events.
CORE Men’s group is about more than just networking, it’s
about building a community of men who want to develop new
relationships while enjoying high-end experiences here in South
Florida! These events are open to any area man who wants to attend
and while chamber membership isn’t required, you do get
a discounted ticket by being a member. For more information on
CORE events, please visit chamber.delraybeach.com/events.
Stephanie Immelman
regulars | city people
What do you call a woman who had
a happy childhood, loving parents, a
great career and a wonderful marriage?
Lucky.
Indeed. Stephanie Immelman is lucky, but there
is much more to this story than just luck. It’s
perseverance, education, hard work, and the
willingness to expand her mind, and the terrain she
travelled.
As a child, Immelman was exposed to art and culture
as if it were part of the dessert in a Happy Meal.
Her father Charlie was an artist for NASA and Disney
and her mother Margaret was a teacher.
They both adored their daughter and wanted her
to relish the humanities as much as they did. “My
parents believed in education. They taught me about
art, literature and history and took me with them to
Washington and New York City.”
They also – perhaps unknowingly – laid the
groundwork for their daughter to travel the world
and experience a career path that many people
dream about. Especially since Immelman is a 6th
generation Floridian, whose grandfather owned orange
groves in Sanford, Florida.
Immelman, who grew up in Sanford, wanted to be
a lawyer. She clerked for a law firm (as a teen) and
again for a law professor at University of Florida,
where she went to college.
But law was not to be for this level-headed businesswoman.
Instead, she started out in the management
training program at Eastern Airlines. The
job allowed Immelman to travel the world from her
home base in Miami.
After Eastern Airlines Immelman moved to Houston
to work for Continental Airlines. She was hired to
work on their One Pass Elite Frequent Flyer Program.
Though Immelman loved all her jobs (a feat not
many people will attest to) she switched gears and
went to work for Sprint Telecom in their International
Marketing Department in Atlanta.
Traveling the world became second nature to this
woman of many talents, so it came as no surprise
when her next job was in AT&T’s Europe/Middle
East/Africa division. There she ran their Competitor
Intelligence Program.
Based in Brussels, Immelman also went to Boston
by diane feen | Photo by Ethan Dangerwing
A Woman of the
World Close to Home
University’s Brussels Masters’ Degree program in
International Relations. Though this career move
catapulted her into the international stratosphere, it
also gave her an arial view of humanity from a new
perspective.
“One thing I learned about living in Europe for 14
years is that the people have a different attitude about
life than Americans. Their mindset is to be happy and
enjoy each day. It is a mindset that goes back to food.
They eat seasonally, and sit down and enjoy lunches
and dinners with their family.”
Immelman also realized that Americans live to
work, whereas Europeans work to live. She also realized
how lucky she was in the parental lottery pool.
“My parents gave me the self-confidence to move
to Europe and live my dreams. Being raised by an
English teacher and an artist taught me a love of
literature, art, and history. This is the basis for my
wanting to live and work in Europe and travel the
world to places such as China, India, Australia, Malaysia,
and South Africa.”
She did just that. After AT&T Immelman went to
work at Global Crossing (a company started by her
co-workers from AT&T). She lived in London and
was Director of Corporate Affairs in their International
Mergers and Acquisitions Department.
Though she traveled to India, Germany, Spain, China,
Australia, South Africa, Argentina, and all of Europe
there was something she longed for that wasn’t
in her job description.
“I loved all my jobs - you could go to work and
they would say ‘get your passport you’re getting on
a plane right now.’ It was an exciting lifestyle, but I
couldn’t have a relationship with my dry cleaners,
let alone another human being.”
And as someone who attributes her success in the
corporate world to creating relationships, Immelman
was ready to start one of her own.
That is exactly what she did. She moved to Chelsea
in the UK and went to work for an upscale art gallery
(Martin Summers).
My dream job was to work in an art gallery so that
My parents
gave me the
self-confidence
to move
to Europe
and live my
dreams. Being
raised by
an English
teacher and
an artist
taught me
a love of
literature, art,
and history
was a great job. We sold work by Andy Warhol, Picasso and Basquiat
worth millions of dollars. We did a show once and Valentino bought
one right off the wall - it was amazing.”
So was her chance encounter with her husband of 20 years, Franzswa.
Turns out they both worked for the same gallery owner in the
UK. The two decided to move back to the US but were unsure where.
Kismet intervened once again for Immelman. “We decided to
move to the US (to be closer to my parents) and looked at New
York, Palo Alto, and Denver. We visited Delray for a wedding and
went to First Night on Atlantic Avenue. When we saw the Christmas
tree and all the events on the street we decided we wanted to
move here. So, we did.”
In 2008 the couple moved to Delray and Immelman’s first job was
with the Delray Beach Marketing Cooperative. Like magic (or kismet
once again) her job was to produce the City’s major events such as
July 4th and the Famous 100 Foot Christmas Tree.
“We marketed Delray Beach to the world. In 2012, I spearheaded
an effort for Delray to be named the Most Fun Small Town in the USA
by Rand McNally, USA Today, and the Travel Channel. Delray Beach
was profiled in a national TV show highlighting the best small towns
in the USA and we got Delray in top travel magazines.”
You could say, what goes around comes around. That is why Immelman
is currently President and CEO of the Delray Beach Chamber
of Commerce. As someone who lives and breathes on the merits
of relationships and collaboration – it seems like a perfect fit.
“We advocate for the business interests of Delray, but we have very
strong partnerships with our Non-Profit sector. It is our mission to
bring the Community together for the betterment of our City.”
Since Immelman is a woman of her word, she has done just that.
Their membership has doubled and they have groups such as The
Young Professionals, Focus on Women, CORE Men’s Group and the
successful Non-Profit Council. They also produce Delray Morning
Live, a weekly Facebook show.
There are many facets to the Delray Chamber – and many to her
South African husband, who she calls a force of nature. Her friend
Stacey Hallberg calls Immelman fun, engaging, wicked smart and a
very loyal friend. Noreen Payne attributes her to building an incredible
team that’s come together to create something special. And to
attorney Michael Weiner she is a sophisticated, hip, global thinker.
One thing is for sure – we know that Immelman is happy with her
job and Delray Beach.
“One of the most important things I learned in Europe is that it is
important to enjoy your life every single day.”
We believe her!
IL CONTADINO RISTORANTE
Authentic Italian Cuisine In The Heart Of Delray
If you ask Emma where she likes
to eat in Delray she will rattle off
a few names but it’s Il Contadino
that has captured her heart.
Michael, Chef-Owner
Shrimp & Spring vegetable primavera w homemade tricolor tagliatelle
Like many of the guests who go there she savors the quiet and
serene atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of Atlantic
Avenue. She also loves the food and authentic Italian vibe
of this Pineapple Grove restaurant.
“We were drawn into IL Contadino by the music and the ambience.
Our experience with Michael, who is the chef-owner was
amazing. The food was great, wine selection was astounding, and it
felt like an authentic New York Italian restaurant.”
The wine selection is something that Michael is proud of. This
brownstone, in the heart of Pineapple Grove, is filled from the ceiling
to the baseboards with wine from across the globe.
“I have over 1000 different wines from all over the world. I even
have vintage wines. We cater parties and welcome groups, families,
and businesses to celebrate special occasions here. I feel good
knowing I can offer them the best wine for any occasion.”
One things for sure, everyone is captivated by the personal attention
that Michael gives his guests. Though there is a menu, Michael
enjoys creating everyone’s favorite meal with elan.
Though presentation is important to this foodie, his primary
goal is to create comfort food that makes guests feel good. He also
buys fresh food daily, but only gets what is in season and available
fresh from the market.
“I like to create scrumptious meals for people who come to my
restaurant. I also take pride in the fact that I offer my customers
their favorite dishes cooked to perfection.”
He sure does. His customers are vocal about Michael’s generosity
of spirit and perfection in the kitchen. “All the food I make comes
COPYRIGHTED

Trippa
from my heart. Each dish is homemade, and I can make any type of
food you want from any country.”
The reason is simply that Michael has been cooking since he
could tie his shoelaces. As a child his parents worked a lot and he
often got home hungry and tired. That is why Michael developed
his culinary gift early in life.
“My parents were hairdressers and rarely cooked so I would take
whatever was in the kitchen and prepare a gourmet meal. I could
barely reach the stove, but when they came home there was a complete
meal on the table,” said the father of two.
One of his all-time favorite dishes to prepare for guests is the
Homemade Lasagna topped with a short rib meatball sprinkled
with parmesan cheese. His other popular dish is the Homemade
tri-color tagliatelle pasta in a light garlic sauce with roasted mixed
vegetables and shrimp.
If you ask Peter G. he will tell you there are other things on the
menu to celebrate as well.
“This was the Best Italian food I have had since I was in Italy! The
restaurant is intimate, unassuming, and it blew us away. We had
pasta Vincenzo, chicken parm, chicken Marsala, penne vodka with
chicken and shrimp pasta. My family devoured it all. The bacon
Caesar salad and eggplant stack appetizers all great too.”
Because Michel likes to entertain his guests (and revels in the
delight of cooking for others), he brought back a tradition that added
class and taste to certain dishes. He will flambé a dish at the
table. If you opt for homemade Penne alla Vodka it’s freshly cooked
at your table with butter, cream, marinara sauce and onions and
torched with a flame so it’s piping hot and flavorful.
If seafood is on your wish list try their newest dish from the sea,
the fresh Branzini with spinach and a crab cake in a lemon wine
sauce. The uniqueness of this home style restaurant is that you can
get what you crave, or you can leave the cooking (and creating) to
Michael.
Elyse found this out right away. “We had a fabulous meal here
last night. We sat at an outdoor table and enjoyed an appetizer of
mussels and Lobster Ravioli that were both delicious. We also loved
their homemade garlic bread. Michael was warm and friendly. We
sat a block away from the Swing Jazz Festival and we could hear
the music while dining and people watching. It was a great experience!”
Il Contadino also serves lunch with dishes such as Italian antipasti,
soups, wraps, salads, veal and pasta.
You can also have an event catered in the restaurant (or at another
location). IL Contadino is also available for weddings and parties
and can be rented out for any occasion. The old- world charm of
Branzino w seafood crab cake
this space makes it conducive for intimacy and social engagement.
At weekends IL Contadino may surprise you with live music to
make your culinary experience authentic and romantic.
Entertainer Frank Bruno might show up with his keyboard and
guitar and serenade you under the Florida foliage. This legendary
musician has played around the world for celebrities (and worldclass
venues) and brings his beautiful tunes to your table with
grace and dexterity.
“My mission is to make you feel at home at my restaurant, I am
proud of the homemade food we serve and happy with our signature
meatball dish. Come enjoy yourself and celebrate life. Our
Classic
Father’s Day Recipes
for the Awesome Dads in Your Life
Growing up, my Dad loved steak and
meatloaf. Steak on Saturdays and meatloaf
on Wednesdays. Here are two updated classic
recipes for the carnivore Dad in your life.
Salt and Pepper
Ribeye
A bone-in rib eye requires nothing more than salt,
pepper, and a hot grill. Though to make it even more
sublime, serve with scallions that have been tossed in
olive oil and salt and given a quick char.
ingredients
1 1½–2-inch bone-in rib eye (about 2 pounds)
2 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper
Coarse sea salt
directions
Step 1 - Put steak on a wire rack set on a rimmed baking sheet.
Pat dry with paper towels. Season with 1/2 tsp. salt per side. Chill
uncovered for up to 3 hours. Remove steak from refrigerator 1
hour before grilling and let come to room temperature. Pat dry
with paper towels. Season again with 1/2 tsp. salt; press in 1/2 tsp.
pepper per side so pieces adhere.
Step 2 - Build a two-zone fire in a charcoal grill for direct (mediumhigh
coals) and indirect (medium-low coals) heat. Alternatively, heat
a gas grill to high just before cooking, leaving one burner on low.
Sear steak over direct heat, flipping once, until nicely charred, 3-4
minutes per side. (If a flare-up occurs, use tongs to gently slide the
steak to a cooler part of the grill.) Move steak to indirect heat and
continue grilling, flipping once, 3-4 minutes per side. Using tongs,
lift steak and sear both edges (the bone side and the fat-cap side)
for 1-2 minutes per side to render out some of the fat. Grill steak to
desired temperature, 14-18 minutes total or until an instant-read
thermometer registers 120° for rare (steak will carry over to 125°,
or medium-rare, as it rests).
Step 3 - Transfer steak to a carving board; let rest for 10 minutes.
Slice across the grain, season with coarse sea salt, and serve.
Beef-and-Bacon Meatloaf
ingredients
8 SERVINGS
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 onion, grated on large holes of a box grater
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
¾ cup ketchup
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar
¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
¾ cup low-sodium chicken broth
½ cup chopped fresh parsley
2 large eggs
⅔ cup fine breadcrumbs
½ cup finely grated Parmesan
1 tablespoon kosher salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 pounds ground beef chuck (15% fat)
6 thin strips bacon
directions
Step 1 - Preheat oven to 350°. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil, then
parchment paper.
Step 2 - Heat oil over medium in a small skillet. Cook onion and garlic,
stirring occasionally, until very soft, about 4 minutes. Transfer to a large
bowl.
Step 3 - Meanwhile, bring ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar, and cayenne to
a boil in a small saucepan, reduce heat, and simmer, stirring occasionally,
until slightly reduced and syrupy, about 5 minutes. Transfer 2 tablespoons
ketchup mixture to a blender; add broth and parsley and blend until smooth.
Set remaining ketchup mixture aside.
Step 4 - Add broth mixture, eggs, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, salt, and pepper
to onion and garlic; mix to combine. Add beef and mix well with your hands
to combine. Transfer meatloaf mixture to prepared pan and form into a long
log (about 12”x5”), smoothing surface. Spread reserved ketchup mixture over
top and drape bacon in a crisscross pattern over loaf, tucking underneath.
Bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center registers
165° and bacon is crisp, 70–80 minutes. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.
BY Bill Piechocki
Are Botanicals Good for
the Health of Your Pets?
In the quest for optimal health for ourselves and our pets in this challenging
toxic world, we must think outside of the mainstream marketing
to find healthful solutions. Many modern mono-crop agricultural
practices deliver foods that are devoid of essential nutrients to keep
our pets healthy. We must find natural products to fulfil these nutrients.
I want you to explore with me a family of foods that are powerful
superfoods that can aid in that quest for health. Mushrooms have been
used in culinary and medicinal ways for centuries. They are cited in
Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda literature. Even the Greek physician
Hippocrates, circa 450BC, had realized the health and nutritional
values of the thousands of mushrooms on this planet. Mushrooms still
remain an enigma to many in the medical and nutritional field.
In recent years, the availability and research into the benefits has
grown significantly. We have been incorporating a variety of mushrooms
for many different functions including their ability to aid in detoxification,
to strengthen the immune system, and even in supporting
the fight against cancer and dementia. In addition to adding tasty flavors
to our food, most pets instinctively react favorably to the addition
to their diet.
The top mushrooms superfoods for the immune system that we have
used are:
• Reishi is a flavorful fungus that does it all for the immune system. It
has been cited for calming, weight loss, immune balance, easing anxiety
and depression, better sleep and even helping to fight cancer cells.
• Lion’s mane appears to be a brain booster. Filled with antioxidants
which strengthen the immune system as well as fostering the production
of bioprotein and myelin that protects nerve cells, especially in the
brain. This is a serious brain food.
• Chaga, like the other mushrooms included here, is packed with antioxidants,
which are known to fight off free radicals and inflammation.
The benefits are known again for the immune system and reducing
oxidative stress and the growth of cancer have been demonstrated in
clinical studies.
• Shiitake appears as a tasty delight in the kitchen, making stir-fry
a delight. In addition to being tasty, benefits from its’ phytonutrients
which can prevent plaque buildup makes it beneficial in protecting the
heart and liver while aiding healthy blood pressure and circulation.
• Turkey tail contains a compound called polysaccharide-K (PSK)
high amounts of antioxidants which are known to stimulate the immune
system survival rates in certain cancers. The PSK is so effective
that it is an approved anticancer prescription drug in Japan.
• Cordyceps is known to be very stimulating, helping the body to
utilize oxygen more efficiently and enhancing blood flow that is good
for energy, libido and muscle recovery after exercise.
This quick look at the benefits of these and other mushrooms shows
why we believe these foods should be a valuable and integral part of
every nutritional program for your pet. As part of your pets’ rotational
species-specific real food diets, you will see the numerous health benefits
provided by the energetic frequencies both physically and emotionally.
Father’s Day
By Lewis Davis
COPYRIGHTED
Being a dad has to be one of
the toughest but at the same
time most rewarding jobs
that a man can have.
Therefore, it’s only fitting that one day a year is dedicated
to them, to thank them and appreciate their love and support.
I have many stories about my dad: some good, some
bad, some funny, and some that I will take with me to my grave.
However, the one thing they all have in common is that they’ve
taught me a lesson about the kind of person I aspire to be.
To give you an idea of how things have changed between my
dad and I you probably need to know that up until I was about
eighteen months old I only ever loved my mom. (Obviously I
don’t remember this because as I said I was a baby). Apparently
so much so that I wouldn’t let anyone else hold or carry me, and
that included my DAD! And if she left my line of vision I would
burst into tears crying hysterically. So, when mom disappeared
into hospital to deliver my brother, my dad was the only one I
had left and miraculously, overnight I was able to let my dad hold
me. It turns out that this guy, my DAD, wasn’t so bad after all.
My first story happens quite a few years later.
Dad had recently sold his business and was looking for his
next challenge, something new and exciting to put his mind to.
92 | june 2023 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

My parents came up with an interesting new proposal: leave our
home country and move across the pond to the United States of
America. I was beyond excited at the prospect! As soon as my
dad knew the rest of us were on board with the new venture he
did everything in his power to make the move happen. In order
to support us when we arrived in America my dad threw himself
into jobs he had no prior experience in, and learned how to
be the best he possibly could at them. After twelve months he
finally landed his dream job and he loved it. My dad always told
me that if I found a job I really enjoyed then it was no longer considered
a job. And he proved it! He worked tirelessly to ensure
the security of his family.
My greatest failing is probably my lack of work ethic but that
certainly does not come from my dad. If anything, watching how
he works day after day, and all of it for the betterment of his
family, is something that has profoundly affected me. It’s a kind
of altruism that seems so apparent in dads. Their willingness to
sacrifice their own needs for those of their children. My dad, his
love strong enough to carry a family across the world and begin
a new life in a new country.
The other story that has truly changed my life begins when I
was a kid. I was a nerd, and there’s no other way for me to put it!
People would only ever see me with my head buried in a book.
It’s not a bad thing to read, but sometimes it’s important to focus
on the world around you and not just the world playing out
across the pages of a book.
My dad introduced me to football, or soccer as they call it
stateside, and my perspective on everything changed. It started
with my dad buying me a soccer video game. I’d never played
the sport before and this was my first experience of what would
soon become a huge part of my life. I started watching soccer
games on a Saturday morning with Dad and we would talk and
debate non-stop about the games, players, managers and strategies.
Before I knew it, I was signed up to play goalkeeper for a
local team. Regardless of the weather I could always rely on dad
sitting in the stands cheering me on. In fact, usually at halftime
when the coach was giving the rest of the team advice, I’d run
over to my dad and ask him instead. It wasn’t out of disrespect
to the coach, but more in the knowledge that my dad knew more
than the coach did.
Playing on the team taught me leadership and communication
on a scale I had never before experienced and I can thank my
dad for that.
Without realizing it, over the years my dad has given me his
wisdom, his experiences, shown me leadership, work ethic and
most importantly he has always shown me love.
My dad may have his flaws, as all dads do, but I wouldn’t
change him for the world!
By linda brown
Juneteenth
National Independence Day!
Although it has been long celebrated in the African
American community, this monumental event
remains largely unknown to most Americans.
Juneteenth, official name of the federal holiday, Juneteenth
National Independence Day which commemorates the
end of slavery in the United States and is observed annually
on June 19. The name is derived from the words ‘June’ and
‘nineteenth’.
It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee
Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, and Black Independence Day.
During the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued
the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three
million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free.
It was more than two years later in 1865 before the news
reached African Americans living in Galveston, Texas from U.S.
General Gordon Granger, where he informed them that slavery
had been abolished and they were officially free. The former
slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting,
song, and dance.
The following year, on June 19, the first official Juneteenth celebrations
took place in Texas. The original observances included
reading of spirituals, prayer meetings and feasting. Within a few
years, African Americans in other states were celebrating the
day as well, making it an annual tradition. The date continues to
be the oldest known tradition honoring the end of slavery in the
United States. Today, celebrations span the globe and here in the
United States its typically celebrated with prayer and religious
services, educational events, speeches, and festivals with music,
food, and dancing.
Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, and several
other states subsequently followed suit. In 2021 Juneteenth
was made a federal holiday. The bill’s passage made Juneteenth
the nation’s 12th federal holiday. The last time the government
added a new holiday to its calendar was in 1983, when the third
Monday of January was declared Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
