Year 9studentTayla Davidson has received twonotable awards recently.<br />
Rakaia Outstanding Junior Sportsperson Awardfor 2018/2019<br />
At the Rakaia SportsAward eveningonFriday26JuneTayla wonthe above<br />
awardfor herimpressive Karate achievements, whichincludes twonational<br />
titles won inthe 12-13 years category atthe National Championships held<br />
in Auckland, <strong>July</strong> 2019. One title is in Kumite (Sparring), the other inTeam<br />
Kata (Pattern of Movements).<br />

The week prior, Tayla was awarded the<br />
Junior Team of the Year Orix Canterbury<br />
Sports Awards Trophy (pictured left) for<br />
Martial Arts.<br />
This evening was scheduled tobeheld<br />
on Friday03Aprilatthe WigramAir Force<br />
base but the public event was cancelled<br />
duetoCOVID lockdown.<br />
Subsequently, the Awards were held online via streaming onsocial media,<br />
from 17-19June.<br />
Tayla has been aKarate participant for the past six years, training in<br />
Christchurch at Kofukan Karate. Tayla started Karate when living in<br />
Christchurch and afterthe earthquakes,aspartofincreasing her confidence.<br />
With the lifting of COVID restrictions, training inChristchurch has resumed<br />
and there is hope of maybe two regional competitions now being able to<br />
be held. Tayla, with the New Zealand team, was scheduled to compete at<br />
the Oceania Championships inNew Caledonia from 12-14 June this year.<br />
However, this event also became aCOVID casualty, ashas the National<br />
Championships. There ishope that the National Championships can be<br />
held later inthe year and the Oceania Championship organisers are trying<br />
to schedule anew date.<br />
AshColl MathsCompetition<br />
The AshColl Year 9 and Year 10 Maths Competitions took place at<br />
lunchtimes during the last week of term.<br />
The teams offour had twenty minutes to answer fifteen problem-solving<br />
questions. Assistant Head of Faculty Liz Cabout said although there was<br />
asmall number of entrants, they were keen and enthusiastic, with some<br />
good outcomes achieved.<br />

Year 13 <strong>Ashburton</strong>College Academic Blues<br />
and PerformanceAwardsAssembly<br />
The second of our two recognition assemblies was held in the College<br />
Auditorium on Wednesday 01<strong>July</strong>, with recipients acknowledged in<br />
frontofthe year levelpeergroup and family members.<br />
Again, this celebration of success wasaverypositiveoccasion.<br />
DeputyPrincipal Jono Hayintroduced the assemblyand welcomedparents,<br />
caregivers, students and staff to the occasion, and outlined the criteria for<br />
the awards.<br />
Principal Ross Preecespoke, saying he looked forwardtothisassembly with<br />
pleasure. Therewas anoteofcaution forthe Year 13 students as he outlined<br />
that the clock was ticking, and asked what significance there might bein<br />
the number 70. Rightly answered was the fact thatYear 13 students have<br />
70 school days remaining before NCEA exam time. Continuing this theme<br />
Ross notedthere can be pressures, andstressedthe importanceofseeking<br />
support–whether from the College Counsellingteam, Teachers,orfromthe<br />
Careers Co-ordinator. He advised itwasn’t wise to answer ‘Yes, I’m fine’ if<br />
this wasn’tcorrect. Also reinforcedwas the importance of enjoyingchosen<br />
pathways, employment ortertiary education, saying that aprobable fifty<br />
year working lifeistoo long to be in anon-enjoyable occupation.<br />
Jono Hay read the Performance Awards, and Abbey Bruce, Head of<br />
Senior School, the Blues Awards; with all students receiving their<br />
awards from the Principal.<br />

The Top Scholar is the student who achieves the greatest number of<br />

Waitomo Championships–June <strong>2020</strong><br />
TheWaitomo Championshipswereheld as aPostalShoot, meaningShania<br />
competed from her home range and then sent the scores away to be<br />
evaluated incompetition against the rest of New Zealand.<br />
This approach ensured that the championship was available to shooters<br />
from all aroundNew Zealand, in factbroadening thecompetitivefield.<br />
Results<br />
Shania Harrison-Lee 1st place Open Championship,with 200.14.<br />
2nd place MasterGrade,with 299.24.<br />
Total score 499.38.<br />
Charlotte McKenzie 1st place BGrade,two pointsahead of her<br />
nearestcompetitor, withascore<br />

Shania said that gaining a1st place in the Open Grade was an astounding<br />
achievementfor her,given she wascompeting against seniorshooters New<br />
Zealand-wide,each with decadesofexperience.<br />
This outcome is certainly evidence for Shania of her improvements as she<br />
risesinthe ranksofNew Zealand’sbest current shooters.<br />
<strong>Ashburton</strong> College’s Junior shooters, Shania said, are just warming into<br />
their year of shooting with phenomenal results at their first competition.<br />
This puts College inhighspirits as they preparefor,and lookforwardto, the<br />
SecondarySchools’PostalShootingCompetitionstarting as students return<br />
in Term Three.<br />

Otago ProvincialChampionships Success for<br />

The Otago Provincial event was ashoulder-to-shoulder match held atthe<br />
Otago Range on 27 June, with twenty three shooters attending from all<br />
around the lowerSouth Island.<br />
First Placings andClose-to-PerfectResults for Shania<br />
Shania gained first placings in both the Master Grade with 300.21, and the<br />
Open Championship with 199.14, foratotal scoreof499.35.<br />
This eventwas Shania’s firstcompetitive300 match. From this herscore of<br />
300.21 was only 0.<strong>09</strong> away from aperfect score which was animpressive<br />
outcome and one which Shania described as agreat achievement for her<br />
so earlyinthe year.<br />

Target ShootingNew Zealand<strong>2020</strong> Season<br />
TheTarget Shooting New Zealand Indoor Season is currently going ahead<br />
almost as per normal, with competition dates pushed out to extend the<br />
season by twomonths,intoOctober <strong>2020</strong>.<br />
Shooters are applauding this as a great development for their sport,<br />
meaning thatcompetitors don’t miss out on their full competitiveseason.<br />
